06 Settembre 2012 – 15:35

Letteratura italiana moderna e contemporanea all’Università di Padova
veneto dai particolari meriti culturali.
Rigoni Stern e i poeti Fernando Bandini, Diego Valeri e Andrea
Zanzotto.
collega all’Università.
infanzia.

ISTANBUL: Armenians hold third religious service at Akdamar church

Armenians hold third religious service at Akdamar church

9 September 2012 / TODAY’S ZAMAN , İSTANBUL

Armenians from around the world flocked to the Armenian Church of the
Holy Cross on the island of Akdamar in the eastern province of Van on
Sunday, lighting candles and praying for victims killed by last year’s
earthquake in Van and for Syrians killed during clashes in their
country.

Armenian Orthodox Archbishop Aram AteÅ?yan, together with other
religious representatives and almost 2,000 Armenians, arrived at the
Akdamar port in Van’s GevaÅ? district in the early hours of Sunday.
Crossing to Akdamar Island on boats, they arrived at the church to
attend the service, which was organized by the Armenian Patriarchate
of Turkey and led by Archbishop Khajag Barsamyan.

During the service, prayers were held, in particular for those killed
by two major earthquakes that occurred in the province in late 2011
and also for Syrians killed during clashes between forces loyal to
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and opposition groups.

The service was attended by AteÅ?yan, the deputy patriarch of the
Armenian Patriarchate based in İstanbul, and many other local and
foreign religious leaders. Van Deputy Governor Atay Uslu, GevaÅ?
District Governor Yusuf Güni, Van Provincial Culture and Tourism
Directorate head Muzaffer AktuÄ?, Van Deputy Mayor Sabri Abi, Peace and
Democracy Party (BDP) Van deputy Nazmi Gür and Armenian politician
Aragats Akhoyan were also in attendance.

Meanwhile, dozens of security units, a 40-person medical unit, a
helicopter and four ambulances were kept ready near the church in case
of any emergency.

After the two-hour service, the attendees left the church and sang
hymns with the Armenians outside the building.

During a performance by folk dance group Agunk, from Armenia, a number
of people unfurled Armenian flags, which led to tension within the
crowd. The flags were then removed.

Hymns and prayers resonated on Akdamar Island in 2010, 95 years after
religious services ceased in the Armenian Church of the Holy Cross,
which occupies a special place in medieval Armenian art and
architecture and is a jewel for Turkey, as indicated by both Turkish
and foreign observers.

Known in English as the Cathedral Church of the Holy Cross, the church
was in ruins and on the verge of collapse. However, by order of Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄ?an, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism
started a restoration project in 2005 to preserve the historical
identity of the church. The church has since become a focus for
domestic and international tourists since being opened as a museum by
the ministry after its restoration was completed in 2007.

The Armenian Church of the Holy Cross was a monastic complex until the
1920s, but fell into deterioration after being abandoned during World
War I. Upon a proposal by the Van Governor’s Office and approval by
the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the church started to host annual
religious services in 2010.

Armenians who lived in this province, located on the eastern shore of
Lake Van and in Eastern Anatolia, were deported by the Ottoman forces
in 1915. Armenians say 1.5 million Armenians were killed during a
systematic campaign in Eastern Anatolia, while Turkey strongly rejects
the claims of genocide, saying the killings came as the Ottoman Empire
was trying to quell civil strife and that Muslim Turks were also
killed in the conflict. There are over 60,000 Armenians living in
Turkey, mostly in İstanbul.

2014 World Cup qualifier: Pietro Ghedin: `It’s not nice to lose in
such a manner’
by HENRY BRINCAT

Article published on 09 September 2012

National coach Pietro Ghedin was not so happy with the outcome of
Friday night’s match against Armenia.

Addressing a news conference at the end of the match, he said: `It’s
not nice to lose in such a manner, but that is football, after all. I
think the goal could have been avoided. It was our only mistake
throughout the whole match and we paid for it with the three points
lost.’

The Italian went on to say that he could not lament on the players’
performance. `Perhaps we were not up to par with our opponents
physically and that is because their league has started some months
ago. But I think my players still showed a will to win, without
however being successful. `Against a superior team as was Armenia on
Friday night, we could not do better than we did in the circumstances.
They did not let us think and create. In fact, we rarely had shots on
their goal as we were continually pressed to give up the ball. Still,
even Armenia had just a few shots at Hogg who was only seriously
tested on one occasion apart from the goal and that shot that hit the
post,’ said Ghedin.

The coach praised Armenia saying they were a strong side. `On Friday
they showed why they had collected 17 points in their European
Championship Qualifying Group the past two years. They are a compact
side which can create difficulties also for the top guns, especially
when they play at home,’ he added.

Ghedin said something had not functioned well on Friday night.
`Looking back at what happened on the field of play, I can say that we
were forced to defend, but I would also say that we are still not at
100 per cent with regards to physical fitness. We must definitely
improve. It is normal for a side like ours to suffer pressure from a
superior team. After all, we were expecting a tough match. But at the
end, even if defeated, my boys could leave the pitch with their heads
held high,’ said the Italian mentor.

Asked whether there will be any changes for Tuesday’s clash against
Italy in Modena, Ghedin said the Italy match will be another story.
`Our main task now is to provide courage and morale to the players who
will be facing the team which was finalist in the recent European
Championship. In such a match, we must be serene to try and get the
best possible result. We also have to see the condition of all the
players. Only then will I be able to consider my selection for
Tuesday’s match.’

And asked what he will feel like when hearing the Italian national
anthem being played on Tuesday, Ghedin replied: `I cannot deny I am
Italian. I was born there, and I know everyone of them at the
Federation, where I worked for several years. But at present, I am
working here and my task is to see Malta doing well.’

Before leaving the press hall, Ghedin thanked the fans who were at Ta’
Qali on Friday night. `All those who were there encouraged us all the
way. I only hope that it will be better for all in future,’ he said.
