REVEALING TOO MUCH: INFO BELONGING TO ARMENIAN GROUPS ONLINE

Turkey

On Nov. 24, 25 and 26, International Association to Fight Unfounded
Armenian Allegations (ASİM-DER) head Göksel Gulbey published the
street addresses and contact information of Armenian foundations,
schools and churches active in Turkey via his Twitter account.

Try to imagine what it would mean if a neo-Nazi — or any other
extreme right-wing organization — in Germany were to do the same with
details about the addresses and telephone numbers of Jewish synagogues,
foundations, schools and so on.

Actually, no matter where in the world it happens, when racist
organizations get hold of contact information belonging to vulnerable
minority groups and then purposefully disclose it, it always means
the same thing: Go and “beat people up, hit them or at the very least,
make them very uncomfortable and worried.”

Prior to the release of this contact information, Göksel Gulbey was
involved in a series of incidents targeting Armenians. In fact, in one
case, Gulbey made a formal complaint to the Interior Ministry about
the number of Armenian foundations active in Turkey (57), asking in his
complaint, “Is there really a need for this many Armenian foundations?”

Another incident in the past involves the fake execution by Göksel
Gulbey and other ASİM-DER leaders of a plaster model of Armenian
President Serzh Sarksyan. When the association’s activities are
examined more closely, it in fact appears that their problem lies
more in the actual existence of Armenians rather than any “Armenian
allegations.”

In democratic societies the world around, there are generally two
limitations placed on freedom of expression. One of these has to do
with open invitations to violence, and the other with racist rhetoric
that spreads hatred and enmity targeting specific groups. Turkey’s
history is filled with incidents in which minority groups were targeted
for attacks. And while debates may rage about what the limitations
to freedom of expression are, and what certain rhetoric means in
practical terms, you cannot overlook such a history and its legacy.

You would not have to know much about Turkish history to understand
that addresses and telephone numbers belonging to Armenian
organizations, when published on the Web by extremist rightist
organizations, turn people into targets, and that this was in fact
the goal. Our prosecutors should move into immediate action and start
investigations into the matter, but I have never witnessed the laws
of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) used this way.

As I have written before in this column, the application of former
Article 312, the infamous article of the TCK on provoking hatred and
enmity, now Article 216, in cases in which people encourage hatred and
enmity against minorities and other vulnerable groups has proven an
exception rather than a rule. Despite a history marked by frequent
painful episodes of this type, prosecutors and judges ignore and
overlook just how serious the results of rhetoric, expressions and
announcements can be when they target certain groups.

They do not want to understand the potential seriousness of these
situations. They do not want to see that words or rhetoric aimed at
the majority are in fact much different in a practical sense from
words or rhetoric targeting minority groups, and that these things
can lead to very different results. At this point, there are some
civil society organizations preparing to open legal cases against
the above-mentioned use of Twitter. I do hope that the legal system
will spring into action here. For as long as we are unable to prevent
rhetoric on hatred that targets minorities, we will not be able to
prevent hate crimes. And this is the truth, one which we know from
a history marked by these episodes.

Ankara: Pro-Armenian Congressman Becomes Foreign Affairs Committee C

PRO-ARMENIAN CONGRESSMAN BECOMES FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE CHAIR

Turkey

A pro-Armenian Republican representative from California has been
elected to lead the House Foreign Affairs Committee in the next
congressional session.

Senior Republican lawmaker Ed Royce, a staunch supporter of former
US President George W. Bush’s war in Iraq, was elected to the top
position of the Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday.

He is also the co-chair of the Armenia Caucus, backed by the Armenian
lobby. His predecessor Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, whose positions on
various issues were welcomed by Turkey, had been leading the committee
since 2010.

Republicans currently control the House of Representatives and select
the House committee chairs.

Royce sponsored anti-Turkey bills such as H.Res.304, which blamed
the Ottoman Empire for “intentional destruction” of its Christian
population, and H.Res.306, which called on Turkey to “safeguard its
Christian heritage and to return confiscated church properties.”

The “Armenian genocide” bill Royce co-sponsored was introduced in
June of last year and is currently under review by a congressional
committee.

Two Men Convicted In Armenian Power Case, Each Sentenced To Quarter

TWO MEN CONVICTED IN ARMENIAN POWER CASE, EACH SENTENCED TO QUARTER CENTURY IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ORCHESTRATING FRAUD SCHEME

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT DOCUMENTS AND PUBLICATIONS
November 28, 2012

U.S. Attorney’s Office November 28, 2012

Central District of California (213) 894-2434

SANTA ANA, CA–Two men who orchestrated an elaborate identity theft
scheme from behind the walls of a state prison were sentenced today
by a federal judge who ordered both men to spend 25 years in federal
prison.

The two men were the lead defendants in one of two federal indictments
that targeted the Armenian Power gang two years ago. According to the
fraud indictment issued by a grand jury in Orange County, members of
Armenian Power worked with members of African-American street gangs
and bribed bank insiders to gather information that allowed them to
take over bank accounts in a scheme that caused losses of at least
$8 million.

Today in federal court, United States District Judge David O. Carter
sentenced the masterminds of the Orange County scheme and said this
case involved one of the most sophisticated fraud schemes he had
ever seen.

The two defendants sentenced today were:

Angus Brown, also known as “Homicide,” 36, who is described in court
papers as a “career criminal and identity thief” with numerous prior
conviction and was serving time for identity theft when he engaged
in the identity theft scheme that led to this case; and

Arman Sharopetrosian, also known as “Horse,” 33, of Burbank, a member
of the Armenian Power criminal enterprise who was serving a 10-year
sentence for shooting at an occupied vehicle and carrying a concealed
weapon when he committed the federal fraud offense.

Brown and Sharopetrosian were convicted earlier this year of
leading the identity theft ring from Avenal State Prison. Brown and
Sharopetrosian were the main defendants in an indictment unsealed
in early 2011 that charged 20 defendants for their roles in the
conspiracy that targeted hundreds of victims and caused millions of
dollars in losses.

According to court documents and the evidence presented at
Sharopetrosian’s trial last spring, Sharopetrosian and Brown organized
a scheme that misappropriated bank information from primarily elderly
victims and then forged victims’ signatures and deposited high-dollar
checks into accounts set up by members of the conspiracy. The scheme
recruited bank insiders to target individual bank accounts and to
illegally obtain confidential personal and financial information.

Prosecutors argued that the defendants intentionally targeted
older victims who would be less likely to become aware that their
identities were being compromised. In court papers, prosecutors wrote
that the defendants’ “express purpose was to target bank customers
with large-value accounts who were not proficient in checking up on
their accounts via the Internet” and that they “sought to use that
information to plunder the victims’ life savings.”

In March 2012, Sharopetrosian was found guilty of one count of bank
fraud conspiracy, four counts of bank fraud, and seven counts of
aggravated identify fraud.

Sharopetrosian was also named in a racketeering indictment returned
by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles that targeted the Armenian
Power gang. Sharopetrosian is pending trial in that case.

Brown pleaded guilty in December 2011 to conspiracy to commit bank
fraud conspiracy, bank fraud, and 17 counts of aggravated identity
theft.

All 20 defendants named in the fraud indictment have been convicted,
and most of them are scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Carter in
the coming months. The several other defendants already sentenced
have received sentences of up to 51 months in prison.

The case was investigated by members of the Eurasian Organized Crime
Task Force, which includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
the United States Secret Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Los Angeles
Police Department, the Glendale Police Department, the Burbank
Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and the
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Members of opposition bloc Armenian National Congress (HAK) who are
opposed to cooperation with Prosperous Armenia Party look forward to
a statement from PAP leader Gagik Tsarukyan that he is not running
for president, 168 Zham reports, citing sources close to Armenian
National Congress.

ANC members who are afraid of the perspective of cooperation between
ANC and PAP as well as the nomination of a common candidate think
it will be their only salvation as ANC will not have to back Gagik
Tsarukyan’s candidacy.

According to the paper’s sources, in ANC, only Levon Ter-Petrosyan
and Levon Zurabyan want Gagik Tsarukyan’s and PAP’s nomination for
presidential elections.

Stone Symphony In Garni Is Turning Into A Jugha Cemetery

STONE SYMPHONY IN GARNI IS TURNING INTO A JUGHA CEMETERY

Thursday, November 29, 20:00

The Stone Symphony, a marvelous nature ensemble in the picturesque
gorge of Garni, is turning into a Jugha cemetery (Jugha used to be
an Armenian town in the Autonomous Republic of Nakhijevan, where
the local authorities demolished a unique historical monument –
the Armenian cemetery consisting of hundreds of cross-stones).

At today’s press conference in Yerevan, Samvel Hovhannisyan, an
environmental activist concerned with the demolition of the Stone
Symphony, compared the Stone Symphony with the cemetery of Old Jugha.

He showed the journalists the address to Head of Armenian
Police Vladimir Gasparyan. In their address, the activists demand
investigating the case to find out why the Police of Kotayk region
has taken no steps so far to eradicate the vandalism against
the world famous monument of nature. The activists apply to the
police to investigate the situation and to bring the culprits
to criminal responsibility. Hovhannisyan thinks that the head of
Garni administration covers up the criminals. He also expressed his
bewilderment at the fact that the Armenian authorities have been
considering the issue of provision of a passport to this natural
monument for five years.

Hovhannisyan suggested protecting this area round-the-clock in order to
prevent re-occurrence of the crime. He said that the local residents
sell the stones cut from the Stone Symphony as building materials,
and the “local oligarchs” are proud of the fact that they build
their houses at the expense of destruction of the unique beauty of
nature. “These houses were built after the Government had included
this place of the Stone Symphony in the list of Armenian cultural
and historical monuments”, he said.

Artsakh Participated In The "Youth In Action" Project With A Separat

ARTSAKH PARTICIPATED IN THE “YOUTH IN ACTION” PROJECT WITH A SEPARATE TEAM

Wednesday, 28 November 2012 22:44

Recently the members of the “Artsakh Youth Development Center”
non-governmental organization participated in the “Stable Development
as a Key to Future Challenges” programme within the framework of the
“Youth in Action” project which took place in Switzerland.

The programme financed by the European Union was participated by
17 young men from 6 countries such as Switzerland, France, Artsakh,
Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Within the framework of the four-day
programme various projects to be implemented with joint efforts in
the nearest future were discussed.

In her interview to Karabakh-open.info chairman of the “Artsakh Youth
Development Center” non-governmental organization Sousanna Petrosyan
said that it was the first time the members of the organization
had participated in such an international programme where Artsakh
was presented in a separate team and not as part of the Armenian
delegation.

“The programme provided a good chance to the young people of Artsakh
to get acquainted with new people, new culture and to present their
own country, culture and history to their contemporaries,” S. Petrosyan noted.

At present the “Artsakh Youth Development Center” has worked out
a programme and is going to present it to the organizers for the
implementation of the “Youth in Action” regular programme in Artsakh.

“If we manage to be a host-country this year, it will be our second
victory,” S. Petrosyan concluded.
