Water Resources Of Reservoirs Should Not Be Used For Energy Purposes

WATER RESOURCES OF RESERVOIRS SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR ENERGY PURPOSES

Wednesday,June 19

25% of Armenia’s territory is under threat of desertification and
over 80% of the country’s territory is subject to various risks
of desertification. The coordinator of the UN Convention to Combat
Desertification (UNCCD) Ashot Vardevarian announced that data at the
meeting with journalists today.

Discussing the problem of water resources in Armenia, he noted that
the republic has enough water resources which, however, are not used
economically. Besides, in Vardevarian’s opinion, the water resources
of water-storage reservoirs should not be used for energy purposes.

“Water does not collect in reservoirs not because of weather
conditions, but because of a technical problem. If we really want,
we can save water instead of using it fully for hydropower plants,”
the expert stressed.

Vardevarian also spoke about the absence of fish passes in hydropower
plants. According to him, the Ministry of Nature Protection is
responsible for the sphere, but it lacks resources to reveal violations
in each hydropower plant.

The UNCCD coordinator underlined the need for measures to ensure the
operation of hydropower plants and at the same time the environment’s
protection.

Lfik Samo Didn’t Leave Carrefour Place Empty

LFIK SAMO DIDN’T LEAVE CARREFOUR PLACE EMPTY

There are rumors that Yerevan City Supermarket will be soon opened at
Dalma Garden Mall. Recall Dalma Garden belongs to Samvel Karapetyan,
Yerevan City supermarkets to Samvel Alexanyan.

French Carrefour was said to open at Dalma Garden Mall, but as the
Armenian press reported Samvel Alexanyan and other Armenian importers,
oligarchs did everything not to allow Carrefour into the Armenian
market because it would have created competition in the market harming
their monopolistic positions.

The press also reported that the issue was discussed with the owner
of Dalma Garden Mall who told Samvel Alexanyan that if he does not
want Carrefour to come to Armenia, he will have to rent the place
that was offered to Carrefour at Dalma Garden Mall.

Apparently, they reached an agreement. As to Carrefour, it was stated
that it was unable to come to terms with Dalma Garden Mall.

The Carrefour issue is international: the U.S. ambassador also spoke
about it many times. The Armenian authorities had to state a few
times that Carrefour would come to Armenia. In the meantime Samvel
Alexanyan was acting.

There were rumors that Carrefour was sold to its UAE branch completely,
and that the French didn’t own it any more. The UAE branch was rumored
to have an Armenian shareholder, State Revenue Committee Head Gagik
Khachatryan, who, according to the press, is also involved in import.

So, it comes out that even if Carrefour comes to Armenia, it will
probably be another business of an Armenian oligarchic family.

Virtually All Social Networks Are Tapped – Armenian Expert

VIRTUALLY ALL SOCIAL NETWORKS ARE TAPPED – ARMENIAN EXPERT

June 19, 2013 | 13:25

YEREVAN. – The disclosure of secret documents by an employee of the
largest national security service of the United States showed that
virtually all social networks are tapped.

Information security expert Samvel Martirosyan stated the aforesaid
during a press conference on Wednesday. In his words, however,
Twitter is the sole large network that was not in this list.

“It was found out that there is a system that enables secret agency
staff to penetrate into the internal activity space of the users,”
the expert noted.

He added that the countries are painted from green to red in the
respective documents.

“Green is less activity, red is more. Armenia was yellow; that is,
the interest toward us was the same color as the US. Georgia and
Azerbaijan, for example, are green,” Martirosyan informed.

And as for the special services of Armenia, the expert specifically
said:

“I doubt that our NSS [i.e., the National Security Service] can
monitor Facebook because Facebook is a closed system.”

In terms of social networking protection, Samvel Martirosyan advised
to always be alert and have a long password.

"Grandma’s Tattoos" Screened In The European Parliament

“GRANDMA’S TATTOOS” SCREENED IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Grandma’s Tattoos

On Monday 17th June, 2013, the European Armenian Federation for
Justice and Democracy (EAFJD) co-organized the “Grandma’s Tattoos”
movie screening in the presence of Swedish – Armenian director Suzanne
Khardalian in the European Parliament. The screening was co-hosted
by two Swedish Members of the Euroepan Parliament, Carl Schlyter
(Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance) and Cecilia Wikstrom
(Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe).

120 attendants were present – a very diverse audience of old and young
women and men. After the Welcoming and short introduction of EAFJD
President Kaspar Karampetian, “Grandma’s Tattoos” was screened. The
audience was electrified, and emotionally touched, from the subject
matter – of Armenian girls and women abducted and enslaved during
the Armenian Genocide, and marked by tattoos as the properties of
their captors.

After the screening, MEP Cecilia Wikstrom, and director Suzanne
Khardalian responded to the questions of the audience. Questions
about the violation of women in wartime, and not only, the shame and
humiliation carried with it. MEP Cecilia Wikstrom mentioned that
“a woman’s body is a battleship” and expressed her concerns about
violated women, and that the EU Parliament should send a strong
message against it.

Director Suzanne Khardalian informed the audience that her aunt Lucia
– main character in the documentary – did not have the chance to see
the movie, since she passed away before the completion of the movie.

However, the director feels “lucky”, only because a significant number
of Armenian women had already been interviewed by her, as if they were
“waiting to tell their stories before leaving this world”. Khardalian
mentioned that like her grandmother, “I also feel violated and ashamed
because the stigma of rape passed on from generation to generation”.

Co-host of the screening, MEP Carl Schlyter, in his closing remarks
mentioned that the fate of women, especially during, mass crimes,
during both World Wars, and even before and after shall be told to the
coming generations, and that we shall be vigilant against such acts,
as to never be repeated again.

CONTROL CHAMBER CHARGED GOVERNMENT WITH MISAPPROPRIATION

Member of Parliament Artsvik Minasyan of ARF said during the
extraordinary meeting of parliament that the Control Chamber has

unacceptable that misappropriation is revealed but no one is held
responsible.

Soccer: Unlock! Liverpool To Activate Mkhitaryan Release Clause

UNLOCK! LIVERPOOL TO ACTIVATE MKHITARYAN RELEASE CLAUSE

Anfield Online, UK
June 17 2013

by Anfield Online | Monday 17th June 2013

Liverpool will activate the £20M release clause in Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s
contract with Shakhtar Donetsk.

Speculation has intensified in the past 24 hours about the deal to
secure what could be Liverpool’s biggest summer signing.

The reds hierachy have identified a goalscoring midfielder as one
of the major pieces of the summer’s jigsaw, and will meet the £20M
release clause after Donetsk have played hardball with the reds over
the last 3 weeks.

The Armenian midfielder has been a goalscoring sensation in the
relatively weak Ukrainian league – with 25 goals from 29 appearances
in the last season. He had also scored 13 times in the previous 42
league appearances since joining Shakhtar 3 years ago.

Liverpool Managing Director Ian Ayre has pulled out of a proposed
trip to Rio for a football finance conference. According to Bloomberg,
sources highlighted the Mkhitaryan deal as the key reason behind the
MD’s cancelled trip.
