AIWA Presents Newly Translated Books by Famed Author Zabel Yessayan

By Contributor // March 28, 2014

BOSTON, Mass.–Zabel Yessayan is remembered as one of the most talented
and prolific Western Armenian writers of the modern era. Yet, few of
her works have been translated into Western languages, and even fewer
into English. In order to introduce the English-language reader to the
diverse output of this outstanding author, the Armenian International
Women’s Association (AIWA) arranged the translation of select works
and release two books of Yessayan’s writings at a Publication Party on
Sun., March 23, at the Armenian Cultural Foundation (ACF) in
Arlington, Mass.

The Yessayan family, with Zabel (second from right), husband Hrant
(back row, second from left), and children Sophie and Hrant.

The first book by Yessayan, The Gardens of Silihdar, offers a charming
account of the author’s childhood in Istanbul. as well as insights
into Armenian life in the Ottoman capital in the late 19th century.
Jennifer Manoukian, of Columbia University, translated the book and
added copious notes to explain the people, places, and events
chronicled there. The second book, My Soul in Exile, depicts the
dilemma of the artist in society, and also analyzes the psychological
effects of the rootlessness experienced by Diasporan Armenians. The
setting is the critical period in Turkey following the Adana massacres
of 1909 and preceding the outbreak of World War I. The novel was
translated by G. M. Goshgarian, and the book includes essays and other
short works by Yessayan.

The team of AIWA members who conceived the project, arranged for the
translations, and edited the selections–Judith A. Saryan, Barbara
Merguerian, Danila Terpanjian, and Joy Renjilian-Burgy–presented the
books and read brief passages.

Exploring exile and alienation

Writer, activist, and feminist Zabel Yessayan (1878-1943) was one of
the most prominent Armenian intellectuals of her lifetime. Her
prolific works in a variety of genres (short stories, essays, novels,
travelogues) reflect the cataclysmic events experienced by the
Armenians during those years and enjoyed great popularity when they
were published. Today they are almost forgotten.

A native of Istanbul, Yessayan graduated from the Holy Cross Armenian
School and became one of the first Ottoman-Armenian women to study
abroad when she went to Paris and enrolled in the Sorbonne. She
married the painter Dickran Yessayan and had two children, Sophie and
Hrant. Her first novel, The Waiting Room, published in 1903, takes
place in Paris and explores themes that were to become central to her
work–exile and alienation.

In 1909, she was appointed a member of an Armenian fact-finding
delegation to Adana, where she witnessed the aftermath of the bloody
massacres of the Armenian population there. Her classic account of
this experience, published as Among the Ruins, is widely regarded as
one of her best works.

The only women on the “black list” of the Armenian intellectuals
arrested on the night of April 24, 1915, Yessayan managed to elude the
police and escape to Bulgaria. The end of the war found her working in
the Near East, organizing the relocation of refugees and orphans. In
the 1920’s, she visited Soviet Armenia and decided to move there in
1933, becoming a teacher of literature at Yerevan State University and
continuing her writing. A victim of Stalin’s purges, she was exiled in
1937 and died, in unknown circumstances, likely in 1943.

Yessayan’s voice speaks to a diverse audience–young and old, Armenian
and non-Armenian, male and female. AIWA notes that these publications
will be of great interest to Armenians both in the homeland and
diaspora, and also to a broader audience of readers and literary
critics of Western literature. Yessayan’s works are relevant to those
interested in Armenian studies, in women’s history, and in the
multicultural society of the late Ottoman Empire.

The Yessayan books are parts of AIWA’s Treasury of Armenian Women’s
Literature series, which focus on the pioneering female
Armenian-language writers. Many of these authors (for example Srpuhi
Dussap, Sibyl, Zaruhi Kalemkiarian) are virtually unknown today, even
among Armenian-educated readers, and their works (many published in
small editions or in rare periodicals) are difficult to locate. To

PM: Custons Union platform very close to Armenia’s economy

Tigran Sargsyan: Custons Union platform very close to Armenia’s economy

13:33 * 29.03.14

The economic platform being developed on the Eurasian customs area is
very close to Armenia’s economic system, the prime minister has said,
introducing the economic advantages of Eurasian integration.

Speaking at a Yerevan-hosted forum devoted to the prospects and
challenges of Eurasian integration, Tigran Sargsyan addressed the main
motives behind Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union.

“The [global economic] crisis demonstrated the strong and weak sides
of the European Union, as well as the axis around which the European
countries are united, and the basic trends of the Eastern Partnership
program … The Customs Union, which came into being over this period,
managed to prove its viability. The CU economic area demonstrated the
platform which is being developed here, and which is very close to our
economic system and development level,” he said.

The premier stressed that Armenia cannot choose a new format of
relations at the expense of Russia, which is its close strategic ally.

“We denounce any relationship with any partner if that’s going to be
at the expense of the relations with another ally,” he added.

Sargsyan further stressed the importance of the CU role as a security guarantor.

“Over the past five years, qualitative changes have taken place in the
CSTO [Collective Security Treaty Organization] frameworks. The CSTO
has made decisions which strengthen our security guarantees. This is
an important component for our political decision,” the premier
explained.

As for the potential sovereignty loss linked to the membership in a
supranational body, the premier assured that Armenia will be enjoy
equal rights with the other member states and have an authority to
pass decisions that will be powerful enough to affect a broader market
with an estimated population of 170 million.

He further referred to the IMF regional director’s remark that
Armenia’s membership in the CU will be more positive rather than
negative for the country’s economy.

“The first important factor, which will offer advantages to
businesses, is the free entry of subjects into the consumer market.
The formation of new regimes helps freely realize products and
services in this new market,” Sargsyan added.

Russian official: Karabakh political status not discussed during
Armenia’s Customs Union talks

March 29, 2014 | 17:48

YEREVAN. – Political status of Karbakh is not being discussed during
talks on Armenia’s joining Customs Union, Russian official said in
Yerevan.

Tatyana Valovaya, the Eurasian Economic Commission Board Member and
Minister for Macroeconomics and Principal Directions of Integration,
recalled that Customs Union is solely an economic organization.

“We are not discussing the status of territories. We have respect
towards intentional process ongoing on the matter, but it will not
affect the economic process undertaken by us,” she said.

Valovaya noted that economic integration not always implies complete
solution to political issues.

“For example, UK and Spain have been parts of one economic area for a
long time, but they have Gibraltar. We have no problems for Armenia to
become a future member of Eurasian Economic Space,” she emphasized.

Eurovision: Eurovision Song Contest Preview: Armenia

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST PREVIEW: ARMENIA

TVLatest.com
March 27 2014

Mar 27 2014 11:27 am CET

Armenia may come in second alphabetically but for bookmakers and
many Eurovision fans this song is the top favorite to win this year’s
Song Contest.

The country will be represented by the song “Not Alone” performed by
the singer Aram Mp3. Though his real name is Aram Sargsyan, he added
the Mp3 almost a decade ago when he started working as a comedian.

But this song is not a joke and since it was released it has become
one of the most viewed and heard entry of all, maybe because of the
piano-ballad mixed with dubstep or maybe because of the encouraging
lyrics for those listeners that feel lonely.

Not Alone was chosen in February by Armenian TV, two months after
they had already announced that Aram will represent the nation in
Copenhagen. The song will feature in the first semi final, on may 6th,
and it is the first of the night. Surely it will be engraved in our
brains by the day of the final, including all the snippets played
during voting time.

This would be the first male solo winner of Eurovision since Alexander
Rybak in 2009 and surely Aram’s charisma on stage earned by his work as
presenter for X Factor and Armenian Idol, will help him put the public
in his pocket. He may even get luckier than in his video, where he gets
to kiss the lead girl just seconds after parking his car next to hers.

"More Than 900 Families Have Arrived In The Last Four Days"

“MORE THAN 900 FAMILIES HAVE ARRIVED IN THE LAST FOUR DAYS”

The Observers / France 24
March 27 2014

FRANCE 24 spoke with an administrator for the Latakia News Network,
a group on Facebook that has links with the Syrian regime. He wished
to stay anonymous.

The families arrived in Latakia in small groups, coming from the Kassab
and al-Samra villages [located in the hills around Latakia], starting
Saturday morning. I was present for the first wave of arrivals, which
consisted of roughly 500 people, primarily women and children. Over
the last four days, more than 900 families have arrived, but I don’t
know the exact number of displaced people because many went directly
to stay with family or friends in town.

The displaced people arrived by car or by bus. Many got here thanks
to the help of residents from other villages that were spared by the
fighting. Locals went out to the Cheikh Hassan road [between Kassab
and Latakia] in order to help those who did not have any means of
transportation.

On their end, the regular army and the national defence units
[pro-government militias] sought to protect the convoys, but they
were targeted by sniper fire during most of the journey. Luckily,
nobody was hit.

Volunteers and members of local organisations lent a hand to the
Syrian Red Crescent, which did the brunt of the work, as well as
clergymen from the Orthodox and Armenian churches in Latakia. These are
“emergency” measures, which are only meant to last a couple of days.

Why Isn’t Leke Sevan On The UNESCO List? – Opinions

WHY ISN’T LEKE SEVAN ON THE UNESCO LIST? – OPINIONS

21:47 * 27.03.14

A decision to include Lake Sevan in the UNESCO list of natural
monuments would imply an outside control, an environmentalist has
said, noting that such a measure would not be in the local fish
manufacturers’ interests.

“They want to use the water of Lake Sevan as a resource from a
concrete-covered basin where they could grow fish. If the lake is
included in the UNESCO list of nature sites under special protection,
there will also be an outside control expected to reveal both the
wrongdoings committed locally and the problem with raising the [water]
level,” Hakob Sanasaryan, the president of the Union of Greens,
told Tert.am, commenting on the situation with the lake.

The environmentalist said he doesn’t know other examples of breeding
fish on artificial food in a mountain lake.

Silva Adamyan, a member of the Environmental Alliance NGO, said she
thinks environmentalists would do a great job if they managed to have
lake included in the UNESCO list. But she expressed a strong doubt
that Sevan will be registered as a special protection site at all.

Adamyan said a group of environmentalists have sent a letter to
the president, expressing concerns over plans for building a fish
processing plant in Sevan.

“They are going to feed the fish with artificial food that contains
soya, and we all know soya is a genetically modified organism,”
she noted.

The environmentalist said she regrets that she has just known about the
letter, adding that the civil society would have raised its concerns
much earlier if it had been informed.

Inga Zarafyan, another environmentalist whom Tert.am contacted for
comments, agreed to the opinions above, saying that Sevan’s inclusion
into UNESCO list would help raise the world’s awareness of the lake.

“The entire world would recognize Sevan, the first thing to say”
she said, when asked to comment on possible benefits.

Samvel Hovhannisyan, the director of the water company Sevan-Hrazdan
Jrar, said no matter what UNESCO may propose, they need the resources
of Sevan for irrigation purposes. “If we don’t take water from Sevan
for irrigation purposes, the Ararat valley will be simply drained,”
he told our correspondent.

He said it is important to have water resources in the dams to avoid
exploiting the only lake on the territory of Armenia.

Armenian Industrial Output Expected To See 7 Percent Rise In 2014 -M

ARMENIAN INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT EXPECTED TO SEE 7 PERCENT RISE IN 2014 -MINISTER

YEREVAN, March 27. / ARKA /. Despite a downturn in the first two
months of the year, Armenia’s overall industrial output is expected
to grow by 7% in 2014, economy minister Vahram Avanesyan said at a
press conference today after a Cabinet session.

He said the government expects a significant growth in mining and
food productions by the yearend.

According to him, production of food is expected to see a more than 5%
growth, while the overall industrial output will grow by more than 7 %.

The minister said the fall recorded in the first two months in mining
and food industries was not unexpected being seasonal.

“In this sense, the decline was expected, and I can say that in March
we expect poor numbers,” he said.

According to the National Statistical Service, the industrial
production in 2013 amounted to 1.240.5 trillion drams, having increased
by 6.8% from the previous year. -0 –

Price Of Natural Gas In Armenia Might Increase — Again

PRICE OF NATURAL GAS IN ARMENIA MIGHT INCREASE — AGAIN

03.27.2014 12:44 epress.am

On July 1, the price of natural gas will increase by 4% in the Russian
Federation, reports local dailyHaykakan Zhamanak. The newspaper
reports that the price of the gas supplied to Armenia depends on the
gas tarrif in Russia’s Orenburg Oblast, so it will lead also to a
rise in the price of gas in Armenia.

RA Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsissyan yesterday,
however, said they have received no notice from the Russian side
regarding a gas price hike.

Currently, Armenia gets gas at the border for $189, and in case of
increase it might reach $200, reports the Armenian paper.

UN Vote On Crimea Proves Russia Is Not Isolated – Envoy Churkin

UN VOTE ON CRIMEA PROVES RUSSIA IS NOT ISOLATED – ENVOY CHURKIN

21:48 27/03/2014

UNITED NATIONS, March 27 (RIA Novosti) – The vote by the United Nations
on a resolution declaring Crimea’s referendum invalid clearly showed
that Russia is not alone on the world arena, the country’s EU envoy
said Thursday.

The 193-nation UN General Assembly passed the non-binding resolution
with 100 votes in favor, 11 against, and 58 abstentions.

Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, North Korea, Nicaragua, Sudan, Syria,
Venezuela and Zimbabwe joined Russia in rejecting the document.

“The result is rather satisfying for us as we have won a moral and
a political victory,” Vitaly Churkin said.

“It clearly shows that Russia is not isolated [by the international
community],” the diplomat said.

In the wake of the Ukrainian crisis, Crimea sought reunification
with Russia, a move backed by over 96 percent of voters in the March
16 referendum.

The region, previously an autonomous republic within Ukraine, became
part of Russia last week.
