REUNION DE RENTREE POUR DE L’ACFOA

FRANCE-VALENCE (DRÔME)

Samedi 13 septembre l’Acfoa (Anciens combattants francais d’origine
armenienne) Drôme-Ardèche tenait sa reunion de rentree au restaurant
du parc Jouvet a Valence. A l’ordre du jour, la preparation du 100e
anniversaire du genocide armenien, l’organisation d’une conference
sur les combattants armeniens lors de la Première guerre mondiale
par Jean Krikorian (president d’honneur de la Maison de la Culture
armenienne de la Loire), la dedicace du livre > d’Henri Siranyan et la 20e anniversaire d’Armenia.

Le president de l’Acfoa Drôme-Ardèche fit un bref rappel des dernières
activites et actions de l’Acfoa. Henri Siranyan proposa d’organiser
un deplacement a Châlette-sur-Loing, petite ville de 20 000 habitants
situee non loin de Montargis près d’Orleans (Loiret) où repose Gregoire
Emuralian, le plus jeune fusille de France- fusille le 17 août 1944
par les Allemands.

Krikor Amirzayan, president d’Armenia et referent a la Mission 2015
pour l’organisation du 100e anniversaire du genocide armenien dans
la region, retraca brièvement les evènements majeurs connus a ce jour
pour la commemoration du centenaire du genocide l’an prochain.

Georges Eretzian rappela les rendez-vous de l’Acfoa en appelant
l’engagement de chacun des membres et sympathisants de l’association
dans les evènements fort nombreux qui auront cours dans la region a
la veille du 100e anniversaire du genocide.

Lors de cette reunion, le colonel Andre Seferian -venu de Paris-,
president de la Federation nationale des anciens combattants Francais
d’origine armenienne (FNACFOA) remit a Toros Aïdinian un diplôme
d’honneur pour l’ensemble de ses actes de courage. Etait present a
la ceremonie, Noubar Arakelian resistant de la guerre de 1939-45 venu
de Montelimar.

LA MAISON DE LA CULTURE ARMENIENNE EN FETE DIMANCHE 21 SEPTEMBRE- PHOTOS

Portes ouvertes, hommage au sculpteur Toros et 23e anniversaire de
l’Independance de l’Armenie

A l’occasion de la journee portes ouvertes dimanche 21 septembre de 14h
a 22 heures, la Maison de la Culture Armenienne de Valence presidee
par Nazo Alain Jinbachian etait en fete. Profitant de cet evènement,
les 6 associations qui ont leur siège et leur activite a la MCA de
Valence (Radio A, Fra Nor Seround, section > de la Croix
Bleue des Armeniens de France, Homenetmen, section >
de Hamaskaïne et Fra Badanis) affichaient leurs activites par des
stands qui accueillirent un nombreux public. Avec de très nombreuses
activites culturelles, artistiques, musicales, sportives, danses et
cours d’armenien et d’histoire, des ateliers destines aux enfants,
des sorties, du scoutisme, la Maison de la Culture Armenienne est
devenue un centre de diffusion de la culture armenienne. De 14h a 18
heures, profitant de cette journee portes ouvertes, le public renda
visite aux studios de Radio A, de la bibliothèque, de la salle de
danse et de l’ecole armenienne.

En fin d’après-midi, de nombreuses personnalites du monde associatif
et des elus etaient presentes. Nicolas Daragon le maire de Valence,
Marlène Mourier (maire de Bourg-Lès-Valence), Pierre-Jean Veyret
(vice-president du Conseil general), Wilfrid Pailhès (Conseiller
general), Annie Romy Koulaksezian (conseillère municipale de Valence
en charge du Centre du Patrimoine armenien et de la commemoration du
100ème anniversaire du genocide armenien), les conseillers municipaux
de Valence Kevork Rastklan, Nathalie Iliozer, Myriam Ben Salem Adjointe
au Mair de Bourg-Lès-Valence, chargee de la culture ainsi que la
conseillère municipale de Bourg-Lès-Valence Mariam Kenan. D’autres
elus etaient egalement presents. Tout comme les representants des
cultes, avec le Père Antranik Maldjian, le Père Nareg Namoyan, le
Pasteur Louder Nassanian et le Pasteur Elie Jalouf.

A 18 heures le public assista a la remise d’un piano, don de la
famille de musiciens Rastklan. Madame Lilit Sarkisyan professeur de
piano a la MCA joua quelques morceaux en armenien (Komitas) avant de
laisser la place a Hovo Rastkelenian (Rastklan) pour de la musique
occidentale. Kevork Rastklan, conseiller municipal a Valence a garanti
que sa famille assurerait gracieusement la maintenance annuelle du
piano. Cette journee etait egalement placee sous le signe d’un hommage
a l’oeuvre du sculpteur Toros Rast-Klan ainsi que de la Fete du 23e
anniversaire de l’Independance de la Republique d’Armenie.

Nazo Alain Jinbachian après avoir remercie les personnalites presentes
a fait lecture d’un bref resume de l’immense oeuvre de Toros Rast-Klan.

Puis l’emotion fut entière lorsqu’en presence de l’artiste, la jeune
Marina Bedrossian lut en armenien un poème qu’elle avait realise sur
Toros. Poème repris en francais par le jeune (Badani) Haïg Isachian
fils de Georges Isachian l’un des responsables de la MCA. Toros,
très emu par cet hommage laissa couler quelques larmes…Puis il
prononca quelques mots pour affirmer l’amour de sa Syrie natale,
de son Armenie d’origine et de sa France d’adoption > dit-il.

Après ce vibrant hommage, le president de la Maison de la Culture
Armenienne a appele a la tribune chaque responsable des 6 associations
armeniennes siegeant dans les locaux de la MCA. Parmi ces derniers,
Elisabeth Alachain (Croix Bleue des Armeniens de France), Georges
Avedian (Radio A), Krikor Bardakdjian (Hamaskaïne), Harout Nadar(Nor
Seround), Haïg Isachian (Badanis) et Zare Gharibian (Homenetmen).

Elles furent presentees par la jeune Nathalie Stepanian.

Nazo Alain Jinbachian a ensuite presente l’historique de l’Independance
de la Republique d’Armenie nee d’un vote populaire le 21 septembre
1991. Après un vin d’honneur, le groupe Sheram et la musique armenienne
invitèrent a quelques kotcharis pour terminer cette journee de Fete
de l’Independance. Tour a tour Nicolas Daragon (Maire de Valence)
et Marlène Mourier (Maire de Bourg-Lès-Valence) ainsi que Pierre-Jean
Veyret (vice-president du Conseil general de la Drôme) ont salue le
dynamisme de la communaute armenienne de la region et ont fait part
de leur soutien.

OBAMA FAIT L’ELOGE DES LIENS > ENTRE L’ARMENIES ET LES ETAT-UNIS

Le president americain Barack Obama a decrit les relations
americano-armeniennes comme > et il s’est engage a les
approfondir en depit de la prochaine adhesion de l’Armenie a une
nouvelle alliance des Etats de l’ex-URSS conduite par la Russie.

president Serge Sarkissian qu’il a felicite a l’occasion du jour de
l’Independance de l’Armenie.

Le leader armenien avait reaffirme son engagement declare en faveur
de liens plus etroits avec les Etats-Unis moins d’un an après avoir

l’Union economique eurasienne (UEE) dirigee par la Russie au detriment
d’un accord d’association de grande envergure avec l’Union europeenne.

L’Occident avait egalement fronce des sourcils quand Erevan avait
rejoint la Russie en reconnaissant le referendum internationalement
condamne en Crimee et en votant contre une resolution pro-ukrainienne
adoptee par l’Assemblee generale des Nations Unies en mars. Richard
Mills, qui est le choix d’Obama pour devenir le prochain ambassadeur

stationnes en Afghanistan, meme après que l’OTAN ait acheve
officiellement les operations de combat et lance une petite mission,
en janvier. Il a en outre souligne son desir de liens de securite
plus etroits avec l’Occident au debut du mois en participant a un
sommet de l’OTAN pour la première fois en plus de cinq ans.

Mills a egalement precise le 17 septembre que les Etats-Unis
continuent a soutenir avec insistance l’Armenie pour la mise en
oeuvre inconditionnelle par la Turquie des protocoles 2009 sur la
normalisation des relations turco-armeniennes. > a-t-il dit.

L’ARMENIE CONDAMNE LA DESTRUCTION PAR EXPOSIF DU MEMORIAL DE DEI EZ-ZOR

L’Armenie a fermement condamne lundi la destruction par les militants
de l’Etat islamique d’une eglise armenienne dans l’est de la Syrie
qui abritait le principal memorial pour les victimes du genocide de
1915 en Turquie ottomane.

L’agence de presse officielle syrienne SANA a declare que les militants
ont fait sauter et complètement raser l’eglise des Saints Martyrs
dans la ville de Deir ez-Zor, dimanche. Il n’y a pas de confirmation
independante de cette depeche jusqu’a present. Ni de declarations des
mouvements djihadistes sunnites qui contrôle de larges pans de terres
en Syrie, y compris la grande partie de la region de Deir ez-Zor,
de du pays irakien voisin.

Les officiels d’Erevan se refèrent a l’attentat presume comme a un
fait. “Cet acte ignoble et barbare contre un sanctuaire demontre
encore une fois la nature sauvage de groupe terroriste du soi-disant
>, a declare le ministre des Affaires etrangères,
Edouard Nalbandian, dans un communique. “La communaute internationale
doit stopper et extirper immediatement ce fleau qui menace le monde
civilise et couper tous les canaux de ceux qui le soutiennent, le
financent et le parrainent. >>

Le chef du cabinet du President Serge Sarkissian, a quant a lui tenu
la Turquie responsable de l’attentat rapporte. “Si la Turquie n’a rien
a voir avec l’attaque terroriste contre l’eglise des Saints Martyrs,
elle devrait faire une declaration de condamnation,” a ecrit Vigen
Sarkissian, sur sa page Facebook.

Le gouvernement turc a ete accuse par le regime syrien, les dirigeants
kurdes et certains medias internationaux de fournir un soutien
clandestin a l’Etat islamique. Il a fermement dementi ces allegations.

Construite en 1989-1991, l’eglise Der ez-Zor a fait partie d’un
complexe memorial du genocide armenien. Il comprend un musee abritant
les restes des victimes du genocide.

ARMENIANS’ PRESENCE IN GEORGIA VITAL FOR ARMENIA’S STRENGTH – PRELATE

The preservation of the Armenian national identity is vital absolutely
everywhere, especially in Georgia and its Armenian-populated region
of Javakhk, says Archimandrite Babken Salibyan, the vicar-general of
the Armenian prelacy of Javakhk (Georgia’s Samtskhe-Javakheti region).

“Georgia is a friend and an ally which is home to about 500,000
Armenians, so the Armenians’ presence here is the pledge of the
Republic of Armenia’s strength,” he told Tert.am, commenting on
the Georgian-Armenian community’s role in the strengthening of the
Armenian statehood.

He said that the national identity’s preservation is the task of not
only the church but also the community. “Youth center’s open every day
to encourage upbringing in the Armenian spirit. Some ten years ago,
perhaps, it would have been ridiculous to think about opening centers
of the kind. Quite a lot of centers have been launched by the church
to gather together our children,” the clergyman added.

Mr Salibyan further addressed the language preservation issue. “It
is highly important for us to have Armenian granted the status of a
second state language. I don’t know to what extent it is feasible,
but Armenians must be able to speak a state language,” he said,
noting that most Armenian schools in Georgia have Armenian history
as a selective course on their curricula.

“Our children are not familiar with their history, so it is with
the help of such centers that we are trying to teach what Armenian
history is,” the archimandrite said, adding that earlier proposals for
teaching the Armenian church history never met approval. “They said
the Armenian church history will be taught in Armenian schools when
the history of Georgian church is taught in the schools of Georgia.”

Asked why then the Georgian history is a compulsory subject in schools,
Mr Salibyan cited the state policies requiring that all citizens of
Georgia know the subject. “We have 132 Armenian schools in Javakhk,
where Armenian history is taught as a selective subject – maximum
two or three academic hours per day. And it’s up to the children to
decide whether or not to join those classes,” he added.

Asked about the shortage of literature, the clergyman said they are
trying to bridge te that gaps with the help of textbooks sent from
Armenia. “Certain textbooks, of course, are published in Georgia in
a translated format, but the books for first-graders, for instance,
contain no more information about Armenian writers. Most are Georgian
authors translated into Armenian, which, I think, is wrong,” he added.

Commenting on the church’s role, Mr Salibyan said he thinks that it
can be best revealed through a comparison between the districts which
have an Armenian church and those which haven’t.

“The church’s role and the spiritual life, in general, was very little
about 10-13 years ago; it didn’t almost exist. Supreme [Patriarch]
Garegin II made a very wise decision by launching the prelacy of
Javakhk. Today we have about 30-35 re-opened churches; religious life
has become more active, gathering people together around the church.

The church’s presence awakened the people. It’s not only for the
[preservation] of national culture, educational and other matters
that people stand by the church; that’s why we are progressing,
building our future together,” he added.

HOLLANDE HOPES NEGOTIATIONS ON KARABAKH TO HAVE POSITIVE RESULTS

In his congratulatory letter to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on
the occasion of the Day of Independence of Armenia, French President
Francois Hollande touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

He wished success in the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Armenia’s News.am agency reported.

“I wish that the negotiations on the Karabakh settlement, in which
France is involved as a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, positively
resolve in the near future,” Hollande said in the letter.

“For this purpose I am glad to invite you to Paris at the end of
October,” the letter said.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan are expected to meet in late October at the initiative of
French president.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in
1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a
result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied
20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and
seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs
of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently
holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

GERMAN HIGHER SCHOOL TO OPEN IN YEREVAN

The Minister of Education and Science of Armenia, Armen Ashotyan,
met the Minister of Culture of the State of Saxony-Ankhalt, Stefan
Dorgerloch, during a visit to Germany.

The parties discussed the prospects of Armenian-German cooperation in
education, and also the course of implementing an agreement signed
between the two ministries. Representatives of Armenia expressed
interest in extending programs for deepening study of the German
language, in connection with which the importance was noted of
implementing programs for an exchange of pupils and teachers, which
has already been working in Armenia for 2 years, and also the idea
of creating a German higher school on the basis of one of the higher
schools in Yerevan was voiced.

IRAN’S PRESIDENT CONGRATULATES ARMENIAN COUNTERPART ON NATIONAL DAY

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani felicitated his Armenian
counterpart Serzh Sargsyan on the country’s independence day, and
hoped for the further expansion of Tehran-Yerevan ties.

In a message to his counterpart, President Rouhani also extended his
felicitation to the country’s government and nation, and said promotion
of tie with Armenia, which enjoys a verity of commonalities with Iran,
stood atop his administration’s foreign policy agenda.

Iran and Armenia have taken major strides toward promoting their
bilateral relations over the recent years, particularly in the
economic sector.

According to Iran’s Commercial Attache in Yerevan Hamaiak Avadis Yanes,
the trade turnover between the two neighboring countries hit $293mln
in 2013.

REMEMBERING WWI AT OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY

There must have been over a hundred people there; I honestly wasn’t
expecting this to have a big turnout at all, but after sitting through
Jay Winter’s lecture on commemorating WWI, I understood why so many
people had shown up.

His lecture was not only engaging, but it was also thought provoking.

This led to many arms in the air after he was done speaking.

Winter, a specialist on WWI, visited Old Dominion University’s campus
this Thursday where he gave his lecture, “Commemorating Catastrophe:
The Great War 100 Years On.” His lecture focused on the what, where
and why we should commemorate.

Refugees, gas warfare and genocide were just a few of the events,
which Winter spoke on, stressing his belief that these are the events
which should be honored. Refugees represented the fact that military
treated civilians as they would soldiers, meaning they were fair game
to be shot. Gas warfare represented torturous war tactics, and the
Armenian genocide paints a gruesome picture of the inhumanity which
the war produced.

How should we commemorate the war? Remembrance be achieved through
pilgrimage, visits to local and national war memorials, to war museums
and cemeteries and to battlefields where the soldiers themselves fought
and died. Local monuments were sites of mourning for those who could
not go to national capitals. They represent the raw emotions of local
villagers who lost loved ones to the war. Museums serve the purpose
of paying tribute to those who endured the tests of war.

Why should we commemorate WWI? Pilgrimage is hard, tourism is easy.

Winter stated that travel is seven times cheaper than it was in 1925.

Taking the time to travel to war memorials and museums to reflect on
the fate of millions of men allows us to recognize how fortunate we
are and we gain a new appreciation for life and the fallen men and
women of war.

Winter makes an interesting statement that “war was not only a killing
machine, but a vanishing act,” referring to the fact that 50 percent
of the men who died in WWI have no known graves. It’s important to
remember these men and stand where they stood, to understand what
they went through.

“Read inscriptions on their gravestones, read the names because
in most cases that’s all that’s left of them. Their names shall
liveth forevermore,” Winter said. We can remember their names and the
person the soldier was and the memory of them shall never vanish from
this Earth.

Winter’s lecture was impactful and very insightful. The room was packed
full, every seat taken, and when he finished the applause lasted for
close to a minute. That’s a sign that the lecture really hit home, and
not only made sense, but rang true within the hearts of the audience.

SYRIA: IS FIGHTERS DESTROY MEMORIAL CHURCH OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Jihadists of the Islamic State have destroyed an Armenian church in
Deir el Zor in Syria – a city with a Kurdish majority, which they
conquered recently.

The remains of thousands of victims of the Armenian Genocide, which
took place a century ago, are buried at the church. Armenian Foreign
Minister Edward Nalbandian, condemned the destruction of the church
as a “horrific barbarity”.

The church was consecrated in 1991 as a memorial of the genocide. The
building also included a museum with images, documents and memorabilia
of the people and communities that were lost.

Is fighters killed hundreds of tribal members in the governorate of
Deir el-Zor August and in recent months also fought with Islamist
militiamen of the al-Nusra rival faction to gain control of the area.
