ARMENIA SAYS AZERBAIJAN SHOT DOWN MILITARY COPTER

BAKU/YEREVAN: Armenia’s Defence Ministry accused Azerbaijan’s armed
forces yesterday of shooting down a military helicopter belonging
to Nagorno-Karabakh, a region in Azerbaijan which is controlled by
ethnic Armenians.

The downing of the helicopter, the first such incident since a
ceasefire was agreed in 1994 after a war over the tiny mountainous
territory in the South Caucasus, ratcheted up tensions between Armenia
and oil-producing Azerbaijan.

Three crew were on board the helicopter, which was on a training
flight, Defence Ministry officials in Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia
said. There was no information on casualties.

Azerbaijan confirmed it had shot down a helicopter but said it was
an Armenian aircraft which had intended to attack Azeri soldiers near
the mined and heavily guarded line of contact around Nagorno-Karabakh.

“The enemy’s aviation, after a series of manoeuvres, attempted
to attack Azeri positions,” the Azeri Defence Ministry said in
a statement.

The attack drew threats of retaliation from Armenia.

“Consequences for this unprecedented aggravation of the situation
will be very painful for the Azeri side,” Armenian Defence Minister
Artsrun Hovhannisyan said on his Facebook page.

The violence highlights the risk of tensions over Nagorno-Karabakh
triggering a wider conflict in the South Caucasus, where oil and
natural gas flow from the Caspian region to Europe.

About 30,000 people were killed in 1991 in fighting between ethnic
Azeris and Armenians which erupted as the Soviet Union collapsed.

Despite the 20-year ceasefire, mainly Muslim Azerbaijan and
predominantly Christian Armenia regularly trade accusations of inciting
violence around Nagorno-Karabakh and along the Azeri-Armenian border,
where clashes also occur. AFP

A Deacon is Ordained in Framingham

Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church
of America (Eastern), traveled to the Church of the Holy Translators in
Framingham, MA, on Sunday, November 2, where he ordained Michael Sabounjian
to the rank of deacon.

Archbishop Barsamian celebrated the Divine Liturgy. Also present were the
Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan and Rev. Fr. Mardiros Chevian. Rev. Fr.
Krikor Sabounjian, pastor of Holy Translators Church and Michael’s father,
looked on as his son accepted a new responsibility in the Armenian Church.

“For me it was a proud moment being there not only as his father, but as his
pastor. I was awestruck at what he has accomplished in such a small amount
of time,” said Fr. Sabounjian. “I pray for his continued commitment in the
journey he has ahead in following Christ.”

A highlight of the service was the participation of the Boston College
Liturgy Arts Group, a Catholic liturgical association of which Michael is a
member. Among the hymns the group sang during the Divine Liturgy was the
Nicene Creed arranged in English by Michael.

“Over the years they have deepened my faith and pushed me to try new
things,” Michael said.

At a reception following services, another Boston College group, The Bells,
performed three hymns with hand bells.

Archbishop Barsamian congratulated Michael on this milestone.

“Michael is one of a growing number of young people who are taking up roles
on the altar. It’s a sign that a new generation is embracing the ways of our
church,” Archbishop Barsamian said.

Also giving remarks was Fr. Findikyan, who worked with Michael during the
St. Nersess Deacons Training program. Michael said Fr. Findikyan inspired
him to study more deeply the theology of the Armenian Church. He credits his
father with teaching him about pastoral ministry.

“The two complemented each other and gave me a holistic view of what the
diaconate is,” said Michael.

Michael is a senior at Boston College where he is majoring in philosophy
with minors in French and music. He has a deep interest in the music of the
Armenian Church. As his senior project in high school, he arranged and
adapted the music of Armenian hymns for English speakers.

A graduate of his parish Sunday School, Michael has served as a sub-deacon
and has also helped train young acolytes to serve on the altar at Holy
Translators Church. He has participated in various Diocesan programs,
including St. Vartan Camp and the summer conferences at St. Nersess Armenian
Seminary.

He plans to continue his service to the Armenian Church in the coming years.

“You always feel that there’s more to learn,” said Michael. “I feel blessed
to have been given the opportunity to give all that I have in this new
ministry.”

Parishioners were inspired to witness Michael’s ordination last Sunday.

“This is big for the life of our church, since Michael is the first deacon
ordained in the history of our parish,” said Fr. Sabounjian. “There was lots
of love and positive energy.”

Yn. LuAnn Sabounjian added: “Sunday was a very emotional day in many ways.
It was so wonderful to see his ordination as he was surrounded by people who
love and supported him through the years. It was a very rewarding experience
for me as a mother.”

Serzh Sargsyan Makes Step Forward

SERZH SARGSYAN MAKES STEP FORWARD

Lragir.am
Country – 10 November 2014, 20:41

In an interview with Armenpress, on November 10 Serzh Sargsyan
commented on the current political situation.

“Obviously, we are focused on the domestic processes and once again
we highlight all the proposals, all the recommendations that will be
possible to implement and achieve something good as a result.

Basically, I urge my fellow party members, representatives of the state
government machine not to accept such recommendations, criticism with
hostility and study and find whatever is useful there.”

In this respect, he said, the most tangible one is the 12
recommendations by the four parliamentary forces. The government has
studied attentively, and it is known to everybody that the government
has responded in detail. The parliamentary forces are not satisfied
with these answers, and the government says we have done a huge job
and this and this has been done regarding these recommendations, while
the other recommendations are impossible to implement, he stated,
proposing to come back to the document and specify the processes
through which those points will be implemented.

For the first recommendation, he said, there will be a small roadmap,
deadlines, move on to the next ones, to make sure that these forces or
the three parties are satisfied, do not think they have been ignored.

And, on the other hand, the government may have a fresh look at the
recommendations. Our purpose is one – we must be able to use all our
capacity to develop the country, he noted.

With regards to the constitutional reforms, he said the time until
February will be used to achieve greater political consolidation
because it is difficult to have a good document without the support of
the political parties and a good Constitution. It is highly important
to have a better Constitution than the existing one, he noted.

MASS PROTEST DEMANDING ILHAM ALIYEV’S RESIGNATION IS HELD IN AZERBAIJAN

20:04 10/11/2014 >> POLITICS

In Azerbaijan, the oppositional National Council of Democratic
Forces held a meeting on November 9. It was aimed at releasing civil
activists, the Azerbaijani service of Radio “Liberty” reports.

According to the article in the course of the meeting the chairman
of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan Ali Kerimli stated that the
Azerbaijani authorities will not be able to destroy the civil society
and opposition parties in the country.

“Despite the massive repressions people have come out to the stadium
and are now protesting against them.

The authorities wanted to intimidate the people and all of you with
the repressions, and to silence the Azerbaijani society. But it
didn’t succeed. They failed, despite the arrests of the activists,
journalists and bloggers,” said Kerimli.

According to the Azerbaijani news agency “Turan”, in its turn, the
chairman of the National Council Jamil Hasanli, claiming about more
than 100 political prisoners in Azerbaijan; he stated that even
in absolute monarchies there are no such big numbers of detained
government critics.

Regarding social issues, Hasanli noted that the pensioners’ pensions
are not enough to purchase drugs. Treatment Azerbaijanis forced to
travel to neighboring Iran. Despite the potential of agriculture the
farmers drag out a miserable existence.

Hasanli stated that there is a need for electoral reforms and
changes in composition of election commissions in order to ensure
the confidence of people towards the elections.

According to “Caucasian Knot”, the Azerbaijani opposition rally
ended with the adoption of a resolution that demanded the release of
political prisoners, the electoral reform, solving social problems,
European integration of Azerbaijan.

The article notes that in the course of the rally the speakers speeches
were being interrupted by slogans like “Resign!” which probably meant
the resignation of the President Ilham Aliyev. Almost in the middle
of the rally the sound amplifiers were disconnected just in a few
minutes after the last slogans were chanted. The organizers explained
this by deliberate power outage. However, this outraged the protesters
even more, and they started to chant the slogans more intensively.

At the same time, as noted in the article, a group of believers had
attended the meeting. They were holding the placards of the arrested
leader of the Islamic Party Movsum Samedov, theologians Abgyulya
Suleymanli and Taleh Bagirzadeh.

Member of the rally Committee, deputy chairman of the Popular Front
Party of Azerbaijan Fuad Gahramanli said that there were about seven
thousand people attending the rally.

On October 12 in Baku another rally demanding the release of the
political prisoners was held by the opposition parties.
