TURKISH FM’S GENOCIDE STATEMENT MESSAGE TO US AND WORLD – ARMENIAN TURKOLOGISTS

11:51 * 16.01.15

The Turkish foreign minister’s recent statement, expressing the
country’s untillingness to spoil the relations with the US because of
the Armenian Genocide, is motivated by concerns over the country’s
possible steps in relation to the big tragedy’s centennial, says
a Turkologist.

“It aims to prevent negative reactions by the United States and the
international community ahead of the Armenian Genocide centennial.

Turkey is again using its blackmail and preemptive policies,” Levon
Hovsepyan told Tert.am, not ruling out the possibility of further
messages.

Turkey earlier tried to ban the natural gas delivery from Ukraine
to the United States, citing the overload in the Bosphorus Strait
as an impediment. In the course of Vladmir Putin’s trip to Turkey
(which came shortly after) the two countries signed energy agreements
which many Armenian analysts believed signaled extreme deterioration
in the two countries’ relations.

Commenting on Chavushoglu’s statement, Turkologist Ruben Mehrabyan
said he sees an unprecedented deterioration in not only the Turkey-US
but also the Azerbaijan-US relations.

“In their statements, they will speculate Turkey’s strategic importance
for those countroes, at times making direct and indirect hints that
Turkey has no alternative to replace the US-Turkey relations with
relations with other states or centers based in those countries,”
he told our correspondent.

Melkonyan said he thinks that such steps are directed to target
countries which have not yet recognized the Armenian Genocide (the
US is among them as it has recognized the tragedy on the level of
only several states).

He added that he doesn’t expect any response to the Turkish official’s
statement. “Those statements will increase thousandfold in number
until April, and so they will remain unanswered this time. The US will
nonetheless respond to the threats and messages by then, unfortunately
using a strictly diplomatic language. I don’t think there will be
any essential change in that diplomatic rhetoric,” he added.

Action Of Protest To Be Held In USA To Demand That Serviceman Permya

ACTION OF PROTEST TO BE HELD IN USA TO DEMAND THAT SERVICEMAN PERMYAKOV SHOULD NOT BE HANDED OVER TO RUSSIA

by Tatevik Shahunyan

Thursday, January 15, 22:33

An action of protest will be held in front of the Armenian Consulate
in Los Angeles at 7 pm Yerevan time. The demonstrators will demand
that serviceman Valery Permyakov suspected of murdering the Armenian
family in Gyumri, should not be handed over to Russia.

To note, similar actions have been held in Armenia as well. Everything
began when Armenia’s Prosecutor General, Gevorg Kostanyan, said
that serviceman Valeriy Permyakov cannot be handed to the Armenian
law-enforcement in line with the RF legislation.

Later, Kostanyan said that the investigation process will be in
the territory of Armenia in line with the legislations of Armenia
and Russia. At present, both the parties have initiated separate
criminal cases. He did not say if Permyakov will be jailed in Armenia
or Russia. Meanwhile, the Russian garrison court has already chosen
arrest as a measure of restraints against Permyakov. The Armenian
party is outraged at such a decision, as all the facts are in the
hands of the Armenian law-enforcement.

On Jan 12, a family of six was murdered in Gyumri. Valery Permyakov,
a serviceman of the 102nd Russian Military Base in Gyumri, is the
suspect. On 14 January Armenian Prosecutor General’s Office reported
that they did not discuss the issue of handing over Permyakov to the
Armenian side, as according to the Russian legislation, a Russian
citizen cannot be handed over to another country. But after numerous
protest actions near the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri and
the meeting at the president’s residence, Armenia’s Prosecutor General
Gevorg Kostanyan said that the investigation of the case will be held
according to the legislation of Armenia and Russia through comparing
the legislative acts of the two countries. He emphasized that the
criminal will be imprisoned in the territory of Armenia and the
process will be transparent.

HERITAGE PARTY DEMANDS ARMENIA’S LEADERSHIP TO LAUNCH IMMEDIATE TALKS WITH RUSSIA FOR TRANSFER OF PERMYAKOV CASE TO ARMENIA’S JURISDICTION

by Tatevik Shahunyan

Friday, January 16, 11:12

Heritage Party of Armenia has disseminated a statement wherein it
blames the Armenian authorities for no efforts to defuse tensions in
the town of Gyumri. “The people’s demand is fair. To reduce tensions,
the authorities of Armenia must immediately demand the leadership of
Russia to transfer Valery Permyakov case under jurisdiction of Armenia.

If the leadership of Armenia fails to take any measures to deescalate
the situation, it will be responsible for the current situation and
its possible aftermaths,” the statement reads.

To note, the tensions in Gyumri escalated when Armenia’s Prosecutor
General, Gevorg Kostanyan, said that serviceman Valeriy Permyakov,
who is accused of killing 6 and wounding one in Gyumri, cannot be
handed to the Armenian law-enforcement in line with the RF legislation.

Later, under public pressure, Kostanyan promised to discuss the problem
with his Russian counterpart and achieve Permyakov’s prosecution
in Armenia. Meanwhile, 14 people were hospitalized with injuries
during clashes of protesters and Police, with nearly 60 people being
detained. Three police officers were hospitalized in grave condition.

SERGEY SMBATYAN CONDUCTS THE KOREAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA: A MAGICAL FUSION OF MUSIC AND LITERATURE

17:59, 15 Jan 2015

On January 14 Sergey Smbatyan, the artistic director and principal
conductor of the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia conducted the Korean
Chamber Orchestra. The concert took place at the Concert Hall of the
Seoul Arts Center.

Undoubtedly, this exceptional evening presented the unforgettable
memories to the hundreds of listeners: they became a part of a magical
fusion of classic music and literature.

The audience enjoyed the simultaneous performance of the Concerto
for Piano and Orchestra by Alfred Schnittke, one of the most eminent
musical figures of the second half of the XX century, and the narration
of the novel entitled “On heroes and tombs” by Ernesto Sabato, one
of the most remarkable writers of Latin America. Sabato’s piece is
considered to be the best Argentine novel of the XX century and a
magnificent example of the “magic realism”, a genre founded by Borges,
Amado, Marquez and the author himself.

During the concert the Korean Chamber Orchestra performed jointly on
the same stage with the pianist Ksenia Kogan, soprano Yeree Suh and
the narrator, the world-renowned Hollywood actor John Malkovich.

John Malkovich is an American film and theater actor, producer,
director and screenwriter, numerous prizes’ awardee, including 2
“Oscars”, 3 “Golden Globes”, 3 “Emmies.”

Film: Crowe’s Water Diviner Is Out Of His Depth

CROWE’S WATER DIVINER IS OUT OF HIS DEPTH

The Spectator
Jan 10 2015

A film that purports to show the ‘other’ side of the ANZAC story does
anything but

by Anthony McAdam

To much fanfare, Russell Crowe’s first film as a director, The Water
Diviner, was released on Boxing Day. It appears at a key moment –
the focus of the film, Gallipoli, is about to become the centrepiece
in an elaborate nation-wide commemoration to mark the centenary of
the landing in 1915.

If intentions are taken seriously, the film is a huge disappointment.

Its release came packaged to suggest that it presents a more honest
and more understanding appreciation of our then enemy, the Turks.

Besides being the director, Crowe is the star and driving force in
the film’s conception, and hence fully responsible for the result. His
intention: ‘It is time to teach our children the other side [i.e. the
Turkish side] of the Gallipoli story’.

Many of the media reviews have been just as presumptuous and
wrong-headed. The Age, for instance, tells us ‘This is perhaps the
first Australian war movie to deal honestly with the Turks and that
is one of its achievements’.

Well, not really. This highly sentimentalised and rather pointless
attempt to depict the human dimension of the Gallipoli campaign, as
experienced by an Aussie father (Crowe) searching for the bodies of
his three sons, fails both as plausible drama and as an honest attempt
to confront the actual behaviour of the enemy (the Ottoman empire),
not to mention the moral justification for the terrible sacrifice of
Allied lives.

On that last point, distinguished British historian Jeremy Black
recently wrote: ‘The current fashion for commemorating the dead
by honouring their struggle does not in fact honour them unless we
explain why they were fighting and facing the personal, moral and
religious challenges of risking and inflicting death. Why did men
volunteer in 1914? Why did they advance across the ‘killing ground’?

To mark the struggle without recalling its point and value is both
to lack a moral compass and, indeed, not really to seek one’.

And for those who believe, as Crowe seems to, that Britain and
Australia entered the war for ignoble reasons, or no reason at all,
it is worth ‘remembering’ that Britain was responding to a clear act
of German aggression against a neutral country, Belgium, with which
it was honour bound by treaty to defend, a decision overwhelmingly
supported at the time by the Australian government and the Australian
people. Turkey threw in its lot with the Germans and made itself
the enemy.

Not only does the film fail to show the slightest inkling of interest
as to why the allies fought and, for that matter, why the hero’s sons
died, but Crowe bathes the whole story in a painfully mawkish and
barely credible tale of a heart-broken water diviner (Crowe himself)
who miraculously emerges as a body diviner rambling around the rocky
cliffs of Gallipoli ‘bonding’ with the very soldiers responsible
for his sons’ deaths, with of course the now obligatory Aussie sneer
directed towards a British officer made out to be a right pompous git
(shades of Weir’s Gallipoli?).

Leaving aside aesthetic considerations, the fact is the film’s lack
of any historical context is breathtaking. There are many, but there
is one really glaring omission.

It so happens that the well-documented genocide of the Armenians at
the hands of the Turks was initiated on the day immediately before
the Gallipoli landing, an overlap that traditionally receives hardly
a mention from Australian historians, and no reference whatsoever in
this film.

What happened to the Armenians? Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, author of
The First World War in the Middle East (2014) paints the basic picture:

The Armenian genocide started in earnest on 24 April 1915 with the
arrest and deportation of thousands of Armenian political leaders
and intellectuals. This act triggered widespread massacres that
subsequently killed an estimated 1 million Armenians. The combination
of the outright killings and the forced marches through the Syrian
Desert constituted one of the earliest examples of a ‘crime against
humanity’…

The mass murder of this ancient Christian community made no exception
for women and children and was conducted with a barbarity that
shocked even officers of the Ottoman’s German allies, some of whom
witnessed the gruesome scenes first hand, as did missionaries and
other outsiders.

The legacy of what happened a hundred years ago in Turkey this April
is now taking on all the characteristics of a diplomatic perfect
storm. Obviously, the Australian centenary commemorations at Gallipoli
will be more elaborate than anything previous, the worldwide protests
by the Armenian Diaspora will be more vociferous than ever, and the
Turkish government’s fierce opposition to even the mention of the
word genocide will be as aggressive as ever.

This combination of factors is now coming to a head with Turkey
virtually ruling itself out of any hope of having its stalled
application to join the EU accepted, its position on the Armenian
issue being a major factor. If all this were not enough, more evidence
is emerging that highlights Turkey’s current machiavellian position
vis-a-vis the Islamic State’s forces on its borders, a savage army
currently trying to murder what’s left of Iraq’s and Syria’s Christian
communities, and other demonised faith communities.

Where does Australia sit in this gathering storm with its myriad
strategic and moral conundrums? Not well. While Opposition Leader
Tony Abbott did not hesitate to condemn the Armenian genocide, last
June Foreign Minister Julie Bishop issued a statement that called
the Armenian killings ‘a tragedy’ but added, quite unnecessarily,
‘we do not recognise the events as genocide’ for which, according to
(former Speccie Diarist) Geoffrey Robertson QC, ‘she was duly lauded
in Turkey as a genocide denier’.

The moral issue at stake is neatly captured in the subtitle of
Robertson’s recently published book on the genocide: ‘Who now remembers
the annihilation of the Armenians?’ It was Hitler’s comment to his
generals on the eve of the invasion of Poland urging them to show no
mercy as there would be no retribution. It’s all part of ‘the other
side of the Gallipoli story’ that Russell Crowe somehow didn’t get
around to even hinting at.

World Jewry Cannot Become A Tool In The Hands Of Anti-Armenian Propa

WORLD JEWRY CANNOT BECOME A TOOL IN THE HANDS OF ANTI-ARMENIAN PROPAGATORS – RIMA VARZHAPETYAN

13:38 * 15.01.15

On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, when
civilized humanity stands together with Armenia and the Armenian
people, honors the memory of one and a half million innocent victims,
killed in the Ottoman Empire, Turkish-Azerbaijani propaganda has
become more aggressive.

Pursuing a goal to distract the attention of the international
community and attract support from different Jewish community
structures, targeted efforts have been exerted recently to cast a
shadow on Armenian-Jewish relations through publications of ordered
and one-sided articles in various media outlets. At the same time,
one should mention that those attempts cannot but fail. The history of
the two ancient peoples – Armenians and Jews – is full of similarities
and mutual contacts, and, even with the utmost effort in the world,
one can not derail those relations. Nevertheless, in the existence
of a political agenda and irresponsible analysts – one cannot avoid
comments based on void arguments, trying to prove the reverse.

An old Jewish proverb says, “Hatred makes the straight crooked.”

Rabbi Joseph Telushkin thinks that when people lapse into anger,
their common sense fails.

Unfortunately, some journalists, politicians, pseudo-diplomats, and
public figures in pursuit of profits and in the process of cajolery
go against every ethic.

The articles by Maxime Gauin and Alexander Murinson in Haaretz,
by Arye Gut in JNS.com, and by Alexander Murinson in The Hill are of
that kind. The activity and biography of those authors leaves no doubt
about the one-sidedness of their analysis. Maxime Gauin, who presents
Armenia as an anti-Semitic country, himself publicly supports an
ultra-right party in Turkey – the Nationalist Movement Party. Apart
from the explicitly employed stance of the denial of the Armenian
Genocide, that party is known for propagating anti-Semitism and
xenophobia. However, Gauin turns a blind eye to that circumstance. For
quite a long time being at the service of the Azerbaijani propaganda
machine, Arye Gut is at the same time a member of Azerbaijan-Israel
International Association. Alexander Murinson takes for reality the
line of his doctoral thesis, that, supposedly Azerbaijan, Turkey and
Israel are nothing less than an entente alliance. On the assumption
of such a misplaced hypothesis he develops the thesis that the enemy
of one of these states is the enemy of all three.

By some strange coincidence, though, that Raoul Contreras, who supports
conservative views and who had never published anything on Armenia,
Azerbaijan and Jewry, develops the theses of the abovementioned authors
in The Hill on January 5, and demonstrates “extensive knowledge”
of Israel, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The one-sidedness of the arguments of the aforesaid authors leaves
no doubt about the oneness of the source feeding.

It is no secret what methods the authorities of Azerbaijan are using
for opinion-making in the West – something that was mentioned by
many highly influential editions, as The New York Times September
2014 issue, and Foreign Policy magazine in June 2014 made quite
extensive survey on how the dictator of Azerbaijan attempts to shape
the international public opinion. I think, that all influential
international Jewish structures at least should not allow themselves
to get involved in such speculations.

Referring to the articles of the aforementioned authors, it is
necessary to underscore the apparent falsehood of their points. All
those authors that try to present Armenia as an anti-Semitic state are
doomed to failure for the apparent lack of any reliable facts. Indeed,
no such arguments exist, as the Armenian-Jewish relations have shown
a rare example of tolerance and co-existence. The history of the two
ancient peoples of the Middle East – the history of the Armenian-Jewish
relations – derives from the depth of centuries; the Armenian Quarter
of Jerusalem serves as the best example. On the other hand, evidence
of the existence of densely Jewish population in the towns of Armenia
is available in ancient sources.

The “examples” that are brought by the falsifiers of history make no
sense, and, according to their authors, are directed at discrediting
of relations between the two friendly peoples. Particularly, during
the World War II an Armenian legion, that is presented as a unit,
that fought on the side of Nazis, in reality, was formed from the
Armenian prisoners of war, serving in Soviet Army. National legions
of such kind were also formed from various nationalities of the former
Soviet Union. The idea of creation of the Armenian legion was thrown to
the Nazi leadership by some representatives of the Armenian Diaspora;
the aim was clear – to save the POWs from physical extermination and
afford an opportunity to escape and rejoin the Soviet Army. Numerous
soldiers of the Soviet Army were saved through this very way –
Armenians, Yazidis, Greeks, Assyrians, Russians and Jews among them.

Regarding modern Armenia, even if there were some signs of
anti-Semitism, which, unfortunately, may happen in every corner of
the world, they never enjoyed the support either of the authorities,
or more or less influential social and political entities. Can the
restoration of the Jewish medieval cemetery in one of the provinces
of Armenia at the expense of funds, allocated by the Government, be
considered as an expression of anti-Semitic policy? The opinion poll,
to which one of the articles refers, is nothing but farce, urged to
prove the prejudice thought over in advance. The methodology of the
poll begets more questions, than provides answers. The questions are
formed so, that even if one holds these polls in the country with
most densely populated Jewish community, that country may find itself
considered as the most anti-Semitic country. It should be noted,
that the authors of that “opinion poll” considered unnecessary to
hear the views of the Jewish community of Armenia on questions raised.

The Jewish community feels itself protected in Armenia, and the
authorities respect the rights, culture, traditions of Jews. There
is no anti-Semitism in Armenia, and we enjoy good relations with
the Armenians. Of course, the community has certain problems which
originate from the general situation of the country. Numerous citizens
– Armenians and representatives of national minorities – emigrated
from Armenia as a result of grave economic conditions. Jews of Armenia
share all the difficulties of the country and, at the same time,
consider themselves proud citizens of the Republic of Armenia. With
regard to the society, Armenians always treated Jews and the State
of Israel with admiration; and, surveys were conducted as per the
historical path of which people deserves utmost respect, undoubtedly,
a greater percentage of answers would be “the Jews”, and “Israel”.

Definitely, one can not even image holding of anti-Semitic and
anti-Israel demonstrations in Armenia, which took place in different
towns of Azerbaijan a couple of years ago.

I am neither a political figure, nor an analyst, and I do not want
to comment about the relations of Armenia and Iran, that of Armenia
and Israel or Azerbaijan and Israel, however, the fact that in the
aforesaid articles attempts were made to present the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict in an extremely biased manner reveals that, indeed, the
Azerbaijani and the Turkish lobbying is task-oriented on the use of
the Jewish structures for moving forward the policy of denial of the
Armenian Genocide and covering the Azerbaijani aggression against
Nagorno-Karabakh. The Jewish people are well aware of what happened
to Armenians in Azerbaijan and Karabakh.

In 1990s, when bandits of the People’s Front of Azerbaijan organized
and committed pogroms and deportation of the Armenian population,
one of the slogans stated was; “Azerbaijan will prosper without Jews
and Armenians.” No matter how hard the authorities of Azerbaijan
try to present themselves as friends of Israel, they cannot be
one of for the Jewish people. If there is someone, who doubts
this argument, please, read the publications on numerous flagrant
cases of violations of human rights by Aliyev’s Administration, or,
at least, the articles on funding of anti-Jewish demonstrations in
Europe. There is no doubt, that Azerbaijan is utilizing the relations
of Iran and Israel, presenting itself in Israel as the most reliable
regional partner in the policy against Iran. Obviously, the leaders
of Azerbaijan are playing a dangerous game, if they think that they
would succeed in using Israel and the world Jewry for promoting their
personal interests.

It is well-known, that during the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman
Empire, along with other national minorities, the Jews also became the
target of the Young Turks. Particularly, Cemal Pasha declared, that,
“the policy of massacre of the Armenians is to be pursued against the
Jews.” During the actions in Gezi park, Istanbul, last year, one of the
policemen, shooting at the demonstrators, said, “You are not Turks,
you are Armenians and Jews.” Today alarming news come from Turkey,
that against the backdrop of growing anti-Semitism, the Jews started
emigrating to other states.

The bitter fate of the Jewish and the Armenian peoples is abundant in
distress, persecutions and pogroms. Crossing paths of history, full
of the horrendous ordeals, the two peoples, more than anyone else,
perceive the pains of one another, and are well aware of what life
looks like when surrounded by hostility and hatred.

And if disregard of the reality by journalist and analysts is
condemned, but fits the logic of propaganda, disregard by political
figures, moreover, by those of democratic states, is unforgivable
irresponsibility, which cannot have any excuse. Thus, on December
12, 2014, Congressman Steve Stockman, known for his pro-Azerbaijani
views, delivered a speech reflecting the article by Arye Gut. This
is an overt disrespect not only to the voters of Mr. Stockman,
but also to the American democracy. Promotion of ordered and false
these should by no means be allowed to sound from the rostrum of the
legislative power. One cannot present propaganda of hatred and promote
the agenda and interests of a dictator as an expression of freedom
of speech and media, and use the world Jewry in it, particularly,
the Jewish community of Armenia. I would like to draw the attention
of the Jewish community of the USA to those facts and urge them to
stay alert and condemn any attempt to exploit the Jewish factor in
such a despicable way by certain political circles.

Rimma Varzhapetyan-Feller is the President of the Jewish Community
of Armenia.
