Syria: Special Forces From Turkey Attack The Syrian Arab Army

SYRIA: SPECIAL FORCES FROM TURKEY ATTACK THE SYRIAN ARAB ARMY

February 19, 2015

Yesterday the Syrian Arab Army tried to relief the insurgent-besieged
villages of Nubl and al-Zahraa and to close the corridor between
the city of Aleppo and the Turkish border to the north. The troops
captured three villages and nearly closed the gap in their ring
around Aleppo but were pushed out again in an onslaught by hundreds
of enemies coming from the direction of the Turkish border.

The map shows the areas gained and lost again by the SAA in light
green. (bigger)

A bloody video from the aftermath (now deleted) showed several dozens
of dead Syrian Army fighters massacred in what looked like a well
executed ambush.

This was curious as the usual insurgent groups in the area are not
know for good military planning:

Regime sources say that the defining characteristic of yesterday’s
“ferocious” battle was Turkish support for the armed groups, as
evidenced by the transfer of fighters and military supplies from
inside Turkey to Aleppo’s northern countryside, including Caucasian
fighters who answer directly to Turkish intelligence.

On Twitter one Omer Khãn, who claims to be a Turkish soldier and is
an avid supporter of the Syrian opposition, looks at the gruesome
pictures of the dead soldiers and remarks (1, 2, 3):

Who where these SAA up against in #Mallah ? Shooting only Head is
feat for a Regular Army, much less for #Rebels.

SAA skulls shattered/shot in/bet Eyes. this is only work of special
units, unlikely any Rebel Org.

#Aleppo Whoever killed those SAA was no Mere Rebel, Pro-Reg cry about
Turkish Intervention.

I concur. Whoever attacked those Syrian troops must have had, unlike
the usual insurgents or jihadists, some extensive and professional
special forces experience.

This is not the first time that Turkey actively intervenes in Syria.

Recently released Turkish court documents show that Turkey, on top of
logistic help, gave direct artillery fire support to the insurgents
in several case.

There are new reports that the U.S. plans to give the insurgents
radios and other equipment to call in air strikes especially to the
Kurds. But the U.S. has already given such equipment to a few selected
Kurdish fighters in Kobani for use against the Islamic State. I doubt
very much that these will be given to “moderate rebels” or will be
used against the Syrian army.

I also doubt that the U.S. will really train or further equip
additional “moderate” anti-Syrian fighters. The biggest lobbyist for
such arming was the former U.S ambassador to Syria Robert Ford. He
has now changed course and admits that there are no “moderates”
who could sensibly be armed:

Ford has accused the rebels of collaborating with the Nusra Front,
the al Qaida affiliate in Syria that the U.S. declared a terrorist
organization more than two years ago. He says opposition infighting
has worsened and he laments the fact that extremist groups now rule
in most territories outside the Syrian regime’s control.

Ford said part of the problem was that too many rebels – and their
patrons in Turkey and Qatar – insisted that Nusra was a homegrown,
anti-Assad force when in fact it was an al Qaida affiliate whose
ideology was virtually indistinguishable from the Islamic State’s.

“It becomes impossible to field an effective opposition when no one
even agrees who or what is the enemy,” he said.

Ford said the latest U.S. approach of ditching the old rebel model
to build a new, handpicked paramilitary to focus on the Islamic State
was doomed; Syrian rebels are more concerned with bringing down Assad
than with fighting extremists for the West, and there are far too
few fighters to take the project seriously.

Ford said the time had come for U.S. officials and their allies to have
a serious talk about “boots on the ground,” though he was quick to add
that the fighters didn’t need to be American. He said a professional
ground force was the only way to wrest Syria from the jihadists.

With Ford’s support lost the Syrian opposition lobbyists and their
friends in the Obama administration will not be able to get the U.S.

support they want.

Ford is right that a professional ground force is needed to “wrest
Syria from the jihadists”. That ground force already exists. It is the
Syrian Arab Army and its allies. But when NATO member and U.S. ally
Turkey sends special forces to support the jihadist in ambushing and
slaughtering those forces without getting rebuffed from Washington
it will take years and lots of bloody slaughters until the jihadists
are finally finished.

“EVEN A MESSENGER ON A HORSE WOULD HAVE REACHED MOSCOW BY NOW”: ON THE LETTER REGARDING MASSACRE SUSPECT

02.20.2015 16:01 epress.am

The Union of Informed Citizens NGO claims that the Prosecutor’s Office
has violated the law by not providing the content of the General
Prosecutor Gevorg Kostanyan’s letter to his Russian counterpart asking
for the transfer of the Avetisyan family murder case to Armenian
law enforcement.

Yesterday, the General Prosecutor released a statement which stated
that “we do not consider it expedient to address, or furthermore
comment on suspicions and circulating absurd news related to the
matter of sending the letter or its content.” Note, that 2 days ago
the Zhoghovurd daily had published a letterby the Russian Prosecutor
which stated that they had not received a written document about the
murder suspect Russian soldier Valery Permyakov.

Turning to the current situation, the Union of Informed Citizens
underlined,”To put it mildly, it is strange that in the 21st century,
a letter sent on February 3 has not reached the Russian prosecutor
weeks later. Even a messenger on a horse from Yerevan would have
reached Moscow by now.

The General Prosecutor has violated the Law on Freedom of Information
by not providing a copy of the letter to the Union of Informed
Citizens, nor to multiple other media outlets.

Therefore, because the Armenian prosecutor, who broke the law by not
providing a copy of the letter as well as any proof of actually sending
it, the Armenian public has the right to claim that the prosecutor
is trying to conceal something… Otherwise it would be devoid of any
meaning to disregard the law to keep the letter’s content a secret.”

Note, that the Union of Informed Citizens NGO has appealed to the
Administrative Court demanding to make the General Prosecutor’s office
provide a copy of the letter.

Zaruhi Postnajyan: Serzh Sargsyan Has Put Everything On Sale (Video)

ZARUHI POSTNAJYAN: SERZH SARGSYAN HAS PUT EVERYTHING ON SALE (VIDEO)

12:46 | February 20,2015 | Politics

Opposition lawmaker Nikol Pashinyan today presented at the National
Assembly’s Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs a bill
demanding Serzh Sargsyan’s resignation.

Mr Pashinyan referred to the recent standoff between the Prosperous
Armenia Party (BHK) and Republican Armenia Party (HHK) and the
following reconciliation. Then he spoke about the activity of the
Fact-Finding Committee investigating the March 1, 2008 clashes which
was later disbanded by Serzh Sargsyan.

“The decision was also illegal. Serzh Sargsyan and Robert Kocahryan
used the preliminary investigation to prosecute their political
opponents and retain their usurped power,” he said adding that in the
document he enumerates several cases when Serzh Sargsyan continually
tried to maintain his illegitimate power.

Zaruhi Postanjyan, a lawmaker representation the opposition Heritage
faction, thanked Nikol Pashinyan for his ‘rapid response to recent
political events’ and said, “The Madrid Principles signed by Serzh
Sargsyan was the first document that removed the NKR from the talks
on the Karabakh conflict after the 1994 ceasefire. ”

“This was apparently high treason jeopardizing the security of
Armenia. The territories belonging to Armenians were to be ceded to
our enemy under the agreement. Two years later, in an interview with an
international media, Serzh Sargsyan says Armenia did not populate these
areas deliberately as the territories will be ceded to Azerbaijan,
with the exception of the strategic Lachin corridor. We understand
fully that agreement undermines our national security,” she said.

Zaruhi Postanjyan further stressed that Serzh Sargsyan has put
everything on sale, even the country’s sovereignty after declaring
Armenia’s intention to join the Eurasian Economic Union. “Today,
the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is put up for sale. This is treason
and the issue was to have been included in your bill as well. Today
Azerbaijan is conducting negotiations to join the EEU and Karabakh
is in the epicenter of this trade,” she said.

Forget-Me-Not: A Symbol Of Genocide Centennial Making Its Way Into A

FORGET-ME-NOT: A SYMBOL OF GENOCIDE CENTENNIAL MAKING ITS WAY INTO ARMENIANS’ LIFE

GENOCIDE | 20.02.15 | 11:45

Alina Nikoghosyan
ArmeniaNow intern

Forget-me-nots, a chosen symbol of commemoration of the Centennial of
the Armenian Genocide, in colors symbolizing the past, the present
and the future, the light and the eternity, have increasingly been
taking a more prominent place in the life of Armenians in Armenia
and around the world in recent days and weeks.

The massacres of Armenians that began in the Ottoman Empire still
in the 19th century peaked in 1915 turning into a state genocidal
campaign, with 1.5 million Armenians slaughtered in the subsequent
few years. In 2015, Armenians in different parts of the world as well
as in Armenia itself will be holding many events to commemorate the
victims of the Genocide on its 100th anniversary.

Under a decision of the State Committee coordinating these events,
the forget-me-not flower has been selected as the official symbol of
the commemorations, while “I Remember and Demand” was chosen as the
motto for the anniversary, because the flower represents the graphic
image of 12 stone slabs of the memorial to the Armenian Genocide
victims at Tsitsernakaberd (Swallow Fortress).

The five petals of the flower symbolize five parts of the world
where Armenians were scattered after the Genocide and created the
Armenian Diaspora.

The flower has four colors – black in the center, symbolizing the
Armenian past, then it is surrounded by yellow which pictures the
light and the eternity in the form of 12 pillars standing in a circle
symbolizing the memorial of Tsitsernakaberd. Light purple is the
present and the prevailing purple – the future.

The small flower that contains much notion in it has already managed
to become widely popular among Armenians. Reporters of many TV stations
appear on screens with a Forget-Me-Not badge.

The idea of the forget-me-not seems to have appealed to the ruling
party as well, as both President Serzh Sargsyan and other senior
Republican Party members appear in public wearing Forget-Me-Not badges.

Schools will not stay apart from the “Forget-me-nots”; among other
events devoted to the Centennial of the Genocide the Armenian Ministry
of Education and Science will organize an event in all public
educational institutions on March 24, when all schoolchildren of
5-12 grades will prepare the symbol of forget-me-nots – 1.5 million
pieces, which later, on April 24, will be handed to visitors of
Tsitsernakaberd.

And although the official website of the Centennial of the Armenian
Genocide says that already in April Forget-Me-Not badges will be
provided for free, it did not avoid “business interests”, and those
willing to purchase forget-me-nots earlier are offered a bunch of
Forget-me-nots – not only badges, but also earrings, key-holders, etc.

According to some media reports, a local businessman has produced fake
badges, selling them in his stores for 200 AMD (about 40 cent) a piece.

However, as a symbol the forget-me-not has not unanimously been
accepted and has been criticized by some as well.

According to filmmaker Tigran Khzmlyan, who is also a former member
of the Pre-parliament civil initiative, the forget-me-not is not a
proper symbol for the Genocide Centennial, because according to him,
Armenians have long had their symbolic flower.

“The forget-me-not is understandable in an abstract sense, however,
it is not now that we are searching for cultural symbols for us, and
in our poetry and folklore, in our image system a completely different
flower symbolizes the Armenian pain, it is the poppy. In the image of
the previous generation a poppy symbolized the blood of the diseased,
meaning the beauty of the poor nature of our mountains, it is red,
but has black in its heart,” Khzmlyan said.

As for the slogan of the flower – “I Remember and Demand”, according
to the film director, it might create a misunderstanding in Turkey.

“If we take a forget-me-not, as a symbol of memory, we appear in a
quite ambiguous situation. The thing is we have nothing to remember,
we are not looking at it from aside and thus we seem to appear in the
Turkish trap. Besides, there is also another unpleasant peculiarity –
the forget-me-not, as it turns out, has numerously been used, it is a
banal and discredited symbol, which we see in many political parties,
religious units and most ridiculously, it is the logo of many trading
companies,” Khzmlyan said.

Nevertheless, the symbolic “Forget-me-not” will at least this year be
in the center of Armenian attention, and Europe’s biggest pop music
contest, Eurovision, will be no exception.

Armenia has decided to unite around Eurovision 2015 the new generation
of all Armenians who were scattered around the five continents
(Europe, America, Asia, Africa, and Australia) in 1915 and five
singers of Armenian origin are associated with five petals of the
flower. They will be joined by one singer from Armenia who will unite
the petals. The group that will be formed for the contest will be
called The Genealogy – 6 artists, 6 destinies, one story, and the
title of the song is – “Don’t Deny”.

Devil’s Due Explores The Armenian Genocide In Operation Nemesis

DEVIL’S DUE EXPLORES THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE IN OPERATION NEMESIS

Siranush Ghazanchyan

Human history has a lot of dark moments….the Armenian genocide is one
of them, comicsbeat.com writes. It presents an interesting project by
Devil’s Due called Operation Nemesis: A Story of Genocide & Revenge – a
graphic novel honoring the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

In 1915, Talaat Pasha, leader of the Turkish Ottomon Empire ordered
the mass execution of every Armenian within his nation’s borders,
resulting in the death of over 1,500,000 victims. Writer Josh Blaylocl
and artist Hoyl Silva tell the story of Soghomon Tehlirian, an Armenian
survivor who killed Pasha on the streets of Berlin and walked away
from court a free man.

Besides Blaylock and Hoyt, Greg & Fake Studio provide the colors,
and David Krikorian and Thomas Dardarian are listed as producer and
co-producer respectively. Pin-ups will be provided by Dan Panosian,
Sedat Oezgen, and Harry Bogosian, son of monologist Eric Bogosian,
and formerly a student of Paul Pope.

Bogosian Sr. has a prose book on the same topic coming out later.

Turquie : Debat D’une Loi Contestee Renforcant Les Pouvoirs De La Po

TURQUIE : DEBAT D’UNE LOI CONTESTEE RENFORCANT LES POUVOIRS DE LA POLICE

TURQUIE

Andrieu (France), James Warlick (USA) and accompanying them officials.

Issues related to the Azerbaijani-Karabagh conflict settlement and
situation along the borderline were discussed during the meeting.

by Azerbaijan acquired a new, more negative quality and manifestations,
which represented a serious threat to the peace process, the work
carried out by the mediators and the maintenance of stability in the
region, adding that such a policy could not have any impact on the will
and determination of the Artsakh people to build a free, independent
state and its strengthen its security on a continuous basis.

Breaking: Garni Residents Running Protest Demonstration Against Qagh

BREAKING: GARNI RESIDENTS RUNNING PROTEST DEMONSTRATION AGAINST QAGHTSRASHEN IRRIGATION CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

11:19 February 18, 2015

EcoLur

Today, on 18 February, Garni residents are running a protest
demonstration against the Qaghtsrashen Gravity Irrigation Construction
Project near Garni Rural Municipality at 12:00 p.m. Under the
information that residents have, “Hayhydroenerganakhagits” CJSC
representatives are going to have a meeting with the village head at
12:00 p.m. and to exercise pressure on him to get his consent for
project implementation. The residents are calling for everybody,
including journalists and environmentalists, who like Garni Gorge
and want to preserve it, join them in their fight against this
anti-environmental initiative.

“Being one of the most famous historical residential areas in Armenia
Garnia is famous for its beautiful climate and cool climate, and is
one of the most favourite and famous centers of tourism.

Today Garni Gorge faces desertification. In September-October 2014
the population of Garni Village beat an alarm signal on taking the
water of Azat River to another community, which is the main source
of water for Garni Village. The fact that Garni village with its
population of 8000 people and over does have drastic need of drinking
and irrigation water is not taken into consideration. Azat reservoir
doesn’t get full with its all capacity and doesn’t even meet the need
of irrigation water demand.

This phenomenon is anti-environmental, which will lead to the
elimination of the magnificent nature of Azat Gorge, it’s massacre
of nature. It will also undermine development of tourism spoken so
much about,” Garni Villagers’ call says.
