HERITAGE DOES NOT AVOID ‘BAD’ MEETINGS: LARISA ALAVERDYAN

By a May 11 decision Heritage Party will meet the Chairman of
the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Mevlut
Chavushoglu during his up-coming visit to Armenia.

"Generally, Heritage does not avoid good or bad meetings because you
do not chose your interlocutors in politics," Secretary of Heritage’s
parliamentary faction Larisa Alaverdyan said at a press conference
today.

At the same time she mentioned that ‘politics is not composed only
of good meetings,’ and that they are going to meet Chavushoglu and
let him know about their viewpoints.

Earlier the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutiun, ARF-D)
had declined meeting Chavushoglu who is a Turkish nation, pointing
to the fact that he said he would not during his stay in Armenia
visit Tsitsernakaberd – the hill-top memorial of the victims of the
Armenian Genocide orchestrated by the Ottoman Turks in 1915.

Le Prix De La Liberte

LE PRIX DE LA LIBERTE

armenews
jeudi13 mai 2010

THE BOARD OF ARMENOFAS SWISS-ARMENIAN FOUNDATION MEETS IN ATHENS

The annual meeting of the Board was held in Kokinia near Athens at the
Armenian Home for the Elderly, 6-9 May 2010. The Fund was created when
members of the Reformed Church of Switzerland collected money to help the
survivors of the Armenian Genocide. Several years later, the Inter-Church
Aid Commission of the Swiss Churches (HEKS/EPER) established a Foundation
and donated it to the Catholicosate of Cilicia so that they might take care
of the surviving elderly who had no family, as well as respond to the new
needs of the Catholicosate in its diakonal mission. As a sign of this
church-to-church solidarity, the Board consists of representatives of the
Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches and the Catholicosate of Cilicia.
The current President is. Teny Pirri-Simonian and the Vice-President Me.
François Payot.

Despite the crisis in Greece, and the world economic difficulties, the Board
appreciated the effort of the Armenian Prelacy of Greece in making the Home
self -supporting. The next meeting of the Board will be held in Antelias.

BAKU: "Garegin II Is Just A Government Official, Propagandist Who Us

"GAREGIN II IS JUST A GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL, PROPAGANDIST WHO USES RELIGION FOR HIS OWN PURPOSES"

Today

Azerbaijan

"What we have talked about many times even before Catholicos of All
Armenians Garegin II came to Baku, has finally happened. We were
quite right to doubt his sincerity," Head of the Azerbaijan-based
Center for Protection of Religion and Freedom of Conscience (DEVAMM)
Ilgar Ibrahimoglu said.

He was commenting on a congratulatory message by Catholicos of All
Armenians Garegin II to the Supreme Patriarch on occasion of Victory
Day and the anniversary of "liberation" of Shusha, as Armenian side
describes occupation of the Azerbaijani city.

In his message, Catholicos expressed happiness over the "victory"
of the Armenian occupiers and says "hopes for liberation of Karabakh"
and "fair rights" of Karabakh Armenians were realized.

As before, this congratulatory message from Echmiadzin shows that
the actions and speech of Garegin II contradict essence of Christian
religion and morality, Ibrahimoglu said.

"The open support to separatism and aggression against Azerbaijan
proves that the leadership of the Armenian Church has no hint of
repentance for the genocide of Azerbaijani civilians in Khojaly
and other atrocities of the Armenian aggressors and they do not
want to encourage settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. All this suggests that it would be incorrect
to equate identify Garegin II with the Christian religion.

He is a government official, propagandist who uses religion for his
own purposes," the human rights activist said.

This factor should be taken into account not only in case of Garegin
II, but also while inviting other Armenian propaganda officials
to Azerbaijan.

"However, I do not oppose visits to Baku by Armenian figures. We need
to continue to show the world our high tolerance. But we should not
think that ideologists of the Armenian separatists have turned into
peacekeepers," Ibrahimoglu noted.

Statement By Armenia’s Defense Ministry

STATEMENT BY ARMENIA’S DEFENSE MINISTRY

Aysor
May 6 2010
Armenia

Chief of the Press Office of Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry
Sabiroglu along with various state analysts has recently intensified
propaganda-making statements, followed by a respond of Armenia’s
Defense Ministry, who issued a statement, published below.

"These regular ‘inspiration’ of the Azerbaijani propaganda-making
forces was caused by a statement of Armenia’s Defense Minister,
who said that the Armenian Armed Forces must reach the level of the
strongest armies in the world.

Propaganda-makers of Azerbaijan and their instructors appeared to
have surprised of that statement, and the reason is, very likely, the
fact that they assess their own Army by means of size of the budget,
‘second-hand’ weapons and a practicing of connivance.

"With an eye to sidetrack attention of people from mass killings,
suicides, rape cases, which are regular in the Azerbaijani army, the
‘Military Commissioners’ of Azerbaijani propaganda are used to cheering
up of a single case, that took place in an Armenian Unit. And this is,
at least, understandable as the political and military leadership of
Azerbaijan can’t get rid of the syndrome of the loser.

Army of Azerbaijan, which had been at least three times greater in
number of weapons, equipment, human resources and which used the
Turkish, Ukrainian, Afghan, Chechen and other mercenaries, lost to
Armenia and had to sign a truce deal.

Azerbaijani presidents used to make vociferous statements, promising
to occupy not only Nagorno Karabakh, but some regions of Armenia.

Instead of drawing the moral from the past, Azerbaijan keeps on
speaking in the language of threats, offences and slander.

Once again we declare that the Armenian Army strongly keeps the
positions at the borders of our country and is ready to resist and
to strike a blow on the enemy at any time."

Armenian Genocide Symposium At Univ. Of San Diego

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE SYMPOSIUM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO

Holocaust Living History Workshop symposium under heading "From Racism
to Genocide: Towards a Hate-Free Campus" was held at the University
of California San Diego (UCSD). The importance of genocide prevention
and the dangers of denial were discussed at the symposium.

According to AAA, Hosted jointly by the UCSD International Affairs
Group and the Hillel Center, the event explored examples of racism
in the 20th century that led to mass murder and genocide. It marked
the first in a series of seminars held on campus to encourage greater
sensitivity and awareness among the student body on issues relating
to everyday cases of racism and genocide.

Moderated by Marina Triner, Program Coordinator for the UCSD Holocaust
Living Workshop, the symposium featured the Assembly’s Western Region
Director Yeghig Keshishian. Keshishian focused on the Armenian
Genocide, and examined discriminatory laws and regulations in the
Ottoman Empire that fostered intolerance and legitimized racially
motivated actions based on certain long-held stereotypes.

"The experience of the Armenian genocide is paramount to any
discussion of genocide, intolerance, and hatred. It is a tragic story,
because of its present denial by the modern Republic of Turkey, the
successor state of the Ottoman Empire responsible for the genocide,"
stated Triner. "Including the story of the Armenians in the present
discussion of racism on the UCSD campus was so important to me,
because the Ottoman Turks relied on the use of certain stereotypes to
fuel their genocidal campaign, and because denial is still occurring,
even in the U.S."
