a Chicago.
menace a execution.

communaute internationale”.

ANKARA: Gul Criticizes Leaders In Europe Of ‘Petty Politics’

GUL CRITICIZES LEADERS IN EUROPE OF ‘PETTY POLITICS’

President Gul blames European leaders for leaning to far-right policies
by engaging ‘petty politics.’ Gul also says it was risky but right
decision to visit Armenian capital

Turkish President Abdullah Gul (L) welcomed by former US Secretary of
State Condoleezza Rice at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. AA
photo European leaders are guilty of engaging in “petty politics”
by leaning toward the far right instead of finding new ways to fight
the economic crisis, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said May 23 at
Stanford University.

“A leader should not always seek the easy and well-worn path ahead. He
or she should be ready to go a new direction and leave a trail behind,”
said Gul in the conference, adding that the current situation in
Europe is “a telling example of how the lack of visionary leadership
could adversely affect the lives of millions.” “In recent months,
we have witnessed in one after another election far-right parties
gaining strength. And, even worse, their ideologies and views are
more and more becoming part of the mainstream,” Gul was quoted as
saying by the Presidency’s website, adding that this was an example of
“petty-politics at its worst.”

Gul said the steps which brought European states closer to far-right
politics were an example of the failure of leadership. “First,
Europe’s leaders failed to see the looming economic problems,”
he said. “Consequently, the limitations of the European leaders in
taking necessary decisions brought about the financial calamities they
currently face. And now, there are growing tendencies across Europe to
become more [inward-looking] and to give in to the rise of extremist
political groups.” Gul was welcomed by former U.S. Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice before addressing students at the Stanford Graduate
School of Business. Speaking about the changes in Arab countries during
his speech, Gul said leaders in the Middle East had long been out of
touch with their people. The president said dictators in countries like
Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Yemen and Syria long thought they could stay
in power as long as their armies and intelligence services were strong.

‘I was right to visit Yerevan’

Speaking of his historic visit to the Armenian capital of Yerevan
in 2008, Gul said it was “a risky move” for domestic political
considerations and for foreign policy implications. “I went to Yerevan,
marking the first-ever visit of a Turkish president to Armenia. The
reward I was expecting from this gesture was a mending of fences
between our two nations. I still pursue this hope. … Risky as it was,
I did the right thing by visiting Yerevan,” Gul said.

Asked by Rice about Egypt’s election, Gul said Turkey was a
Muslim country and was continuing its reforms on the way to the EU
membership. “You will see that more Muslim states have democracy in
the near future.” Gul also said Turkey’s currently poor relations with
Israel were a result of Tel Aviv’s choices. Relations deteriorated
after nine Turks were killed in an Israeli raid on the Mavi Marmara
flotilla, which aimed to break the Gaza blockade in May 2010. Gul
reiterated that Turkey’s demand for an apology from Israel had
remained unanswered. On a lighter note, the president also shared a
memory of his childhood, saying he failed to sell soft drinks at his
grandfather’s shop because he was too shy to shout “Ice-cold soda!”

“That was the end of my business career! If that very failure would
not have happened that day, most probably I would not be the president
of the Turkish Republic today,” he said. Gul met with Apple executives
later on May 23.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul hopes for the normalization of relations
with Armenia and considers his visit to the state in September 2008
risky, but the right move, News Armenia reports.

Gul was speaking at Stanford University. He called the invitation of
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to Yerevan a risky test. Gul was
invited to a football match.

Turkey and Armenia have had no diplomatic relations and their
border has been closed since 1993. Turkey supports Azerbaijan in the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and refuses to admit the Armenian Genocide
of 1915.

Armenian and Turkish foreign ministers signed a protocol on diplomatic
ties and development of bilateral relations in Zurich on October 10,
2009. They have not been ratified yet. Turkey postponed consideration
of the protocols in August 2011. Turkish prime minister brought the
protocols up again in October, but has not set their ratification
terms.

The decision of Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) not to join the
coalition was not a surprise for Hrayr Karapetyan, representative of
the Armenian Revolutionary Federation. It was clear to him that there
would be political reshuffles after the elections. He is confident
that PAP’s decision will affect the political life of the country,
as we enter the period of presidential elections.

According to Hrayr Karapetyan, the future developments will depend on
the posture PAP will connected with the presidential elections. He
refrained from making long-term predictions, as the decision of the
prosperous Armenia is too fresh and needs to be analyzed.

Karepetyan considers events can develop two ways: Prosperous Armenia
will either support Serzh Sargsyan in 2013 or not.

Political scientist Suren Surenyans positively assesses the decision
of Prosperous Armenia. He is assured that this will bring a certain
intrigue to the presidential elections.

FRENCH SENATOR: SOVIET POWER PURPOSEFULLY SEPARATED KARABAKH FROM ARMENIA

“The world community does not recognize independence of Nagornyy
Karabakh. At the same time, it does not refuse its existence. This
makes the situation uncertain”, – Chairman of Financial Commission
of the French Senate, Compiegne Mayor, Mr.Philippe Marini, said to
journalists in Stepanakert during his fact-finding visit to Nagornyy
Karabakh together with other French senators.

He said that all the conditions have been created in Karabakh for
20 years for establishment of democratic institutions. The people
of Karabakh can reach their goal- recognition, as all the forces of
the country have gathered around this issue and all the rest not so
much important problems lag behind it, the senator said and added
that European structures should draw more attention to the Karabakh
conflict region.

During the meeting with deputies and representatives of the NKR
Foreign Ministry, Mr.Marini touched on one of the greatest human
tragedies of the 20th century – Armenian genocide and recalled that
several month ago both houses of the French parliament adopted the
bill on criminalizing of the Armenian genocide denial.

“I have read many researches and books of French scientists about
Karabakh, which say that this region populated by Christian Armenians
has always been a part of Armenia”, – Philippe Marini said and added
that in the 20th century the Soviet power was drawing the borders of
republics according to the principle “divide and rule”, and naturally
after the USSR split the Karabakh issue became very much critical,
as the Soviet power had purposefully distanced Karabakh from Armenia.

EXPERT: ATMOSPHERE OF IMPUNITY IS KEY REASON WHY MORALE IN SCHOOLS IS DETERIORATING

The atmosphere of impunity is the key reason why the morale in schools
is deteriorating, professor of Yerevan State University Artur Atanesyan
told journalists on Thursday.

“Today, our school-children and their parents and teachers prefer the
form over the content and care more for the grandeur of the Farewell
Bell party than for the quality of education,” Atanesyan said.

President of the Association of Consumers of Armenia Armen Pogosyan
said that because of this holiday (involving over 40,000 school-leavers
this year) the prices of clothes, flowers, public catering and
photography services have risen by 5-7%

Common Interests Of France And Karabakh

COMMON INTERESTS OF FRANCE AND KARABAKH

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 14:28:05 – 24/05/2012

Armenia worries about possible change of attitude of France to the
Turkish-Armenians relations and the Karabakh conflict triggered by
the replacement of Nicolas Sarkozy by socialist Francois Hollande.

Hollande’s initial meetings with Turkish leaders mean that France’s
position will hardly change. Hollande is for better relations with
Turkey but he did not state to support admission of Turkey to the
EU and change his attitude to the recognition of the genocide of
Armenians.

The change of president will hardly affect the position of France
which is based on clear priorities. One of the key priorities, though
often not declared such, is the wish of France, as a Christian state,
to stop expansion of other cultures, first of all the Turkish culture,
and help countries which proved able to fight expansion.

This will explain the interest of France in Armenia and Karabakh which
were able to resolve this problem, which is more than France can do.

Europe suffers from the flow of an alien aggressive culture and Europe
does not have the courage to choose other mechanisms. Therefore,
it envies those who stopped expansion and tries to help them in any
way they can.

French Senate members Sophie Joissains, Philip Marini and Bernard
Fournier are visiting Nagorno-Karabakh. However great the role of
the Armenian Diaspora by means of which the French Senators visit
Karabakh from time to time, it should be noted that they find common
interests here.
