persiste encore aujourd’hui.

Erevan a reagi furieusement

a dit Nalbandian.”

journalistes a Bakou.

WE WILL SECURE DOUBLE-DIGIT AGRICULTURAL GROWTH THIS YEAR, TOO – ARMENIAN MINISTER

YEREVAN. – Armenia’s Acting Agriculture Minister Sergo Karapetyan on
Tuesday received French Ambassador Henri Reynaud.

The Acting Minister noted that a double-digit agricultural growth
was recorded in Armenia last year and this trend will continue this
year, too.

They stressed that the intensive meetings and discussions will give
new impetus to the agricultural conference to be jointly convened
in September.

“This will be the first practical step, which will be followed by
cooperation in precise domains,” noted Karapetyan.

“We are able to satisfy the demands of the domestic market. We look
toward increasing the export of fresh and refined agricultural products
to Russian and European markets,” said the Minister, and added that
refined products are exported to France as well.

“Those organizations, including the French ones, that wish to export
will receive our assistance,” said Armenia’s Acting Agriculture
Minister.

In his turn, the French Ambassador expressed a readiness to assist
in agriculture-related matters, and noted that he already met with
representatives from the French wholesale trade market.

“They are interested in Armenia’s agricultural products, specifically
the exporting of vegetables and fruits. In all probability, this
process will commence soon,” noted the Ambassador.

At the end of the meeting, Ambassador Henri Reynaud reconfirmed Sergo
Karapetyan’s visit to France, which is scheduled after the September
conference on agriculture.

The Armenian national team will need to work harder to keep the
positive momentum that it gained in the last qualifying season,
according to coach Vardan Minasyan.

“We need to do a lot. What we did last year will not be enough in the
next qualifying cycle. We won’t be successful unless we double and
triple our efforts,” said Minasyan at a press conference on Monday
on the eve of his side’s friendly game against Kazakhstan in Yerevan.

The match (kickoff at 8:00 pm today) is part of Armenia’s preparations
for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament commencing in autumn.

In the Euro-2012 qualifying tournament a reenergized Armenia provided
a sensation by beating some of the group favorites and unexpectedly
finishing just off the playoff spot. In 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying
Armenia are starting on September 7 with an away fixture against
Malta followed by a highly anticipated match against Italy in Yerevan
on October 12. The other rivals of the Minasyan side in Group B are
Denmark, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

Ahead of the Kazakhstan friendly Minasyan again spoke of planned
experiments with some of the players’ positions and tactical schemes.

Such tactical changes in the May 31 friendly against Greece did not
appear to have improved the team performance as Armenia lost 0-1,
also conceding two penalties that were eventually saved by veteran
goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky.

Berezovsky, 37, won’t play in tonight’s friendly following surgery
on his foot that requires a 10-day recovery period. Gevorg Kasparov
is expected to take charge between the sticks for Armenia.

Another key Armenia player Aras Ozbiliz is now in Yerevan, training
with the team, but won’t be playing against Kazakhstan. The 22-year-old
Ajax Amsterdam man is recovering from an injury he received more than
two months ago. Coach Minasyan said there is no need to rush things
at this stage.

ARMENIAN, TURKISH JOURNALISTS DISCUSS BILATERAL TIES IN YEREVAN

YEREVAN. – A roundtable discussion, entitled “The Media’s Role in
Armenian-Turkish Relations,” got underway Monday in Armenia’s capital,
Yerevan.

Also are in attendance a group of Armenian and Turkish journalists
who, after a bus tour in Turkey, are now in Armenia along the lines of
the “Support to Armenia-Turkey Rapprochement” Project of the Eurasia
Partnership Foundation.

Some discussants were surprised by the fact that the roundtable
coincided with US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton’s visit to Yerevan.

Turkish journalist Mensur Akgun noted that, at present, the matter
of relations with Armenia is not among Turkey’s primary agenda topics.

In his turn, Turkish Jiyan.org website’s journalist Kemal Bozkurt
criticized the Turkish authorities’ demeanor toward the country’s
national and religious minorities, and pointed to several problems
in Turkey.

Diyarbakir Mayor’s adviser and writer Seyhmus Diken told Armenian
News-NEWS.am that he is visiting Yerevan with great pleasure. Diken,
who was using the Armenian word for Armenia-that is, “Hayastan”-,
said last year’s meeting in Diyarbakir between the latter’s Mayor
Osman Baydemir and the Armenian journalists was widely covered by
the city’s local and Kurdish media.

Congressmen Condemn Azeri Attack

CONGRESSMEN CONDEMN AZERI ATTACK

tert.am
05.06.12

Members of the US Congress have condemned the cross-border Azerbaijani
attack against Armenia, which left three servicemen dead and five
others injured on Monday morning.

According to the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA),
representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA), Brad Sherman (D-CA), House
Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Democrat Howard Berman (D-CA) and
Congressional Armenian Caucus Co-Chairman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) Monday
issued strong statements condemning the violence, waged in the early
hours of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to the Caucasus.

In separate statements issued within hours of the Azerbaijani attacks,
the Members of Congress urged Secretary Clinton to issue a clear and
unequivocal rebuke of Azerbaijani aggression, expressed concern about
pending US arms sales to an increasingly violent Aliyev regime, called
for the strengthening of Section 907 restrictions on US assistance
to Azerbaijan, and offered their condolences to the families of the
slain soldiers.

“This latest outrage by Azerbaijan’s military makes it even more
important that Secretary Clinton condemn these belligerent actions
during her visit to Baku later this week,” Rep. Schiff explained.

“Azerbaijani provocations along the Line of Contact are a direct
result of the war mongering rhetoric of the Aliyev regime and they
must cease. We should fully apply Section 907 and prohibit the transfer
of any arms or dual use items to Azerbaijan.”

Rep. Sherman, long a champion of Artsakh’s rights, stressed: “I
strongly and unequivocally condemn Azerbaijan’s recent attack on the
Armenia-Azerbaijan border killing three Armenian soldiers. The timing
of this brazen attack – on the same day Secretary of State Clinton
visits Armenia – highlights Baku’s utter contempt for its neighbors
and its lack of commitment to the peace process between Armenia,
Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan. I call on the Administration not
only to publicly condemn the attack but to enforce Section 907 of
the FREEDOM Support Act without exercising its waiver provisions. We
cannot provide any type of aid to Azerbaijan as long as Baku blockades
Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh and rebukes peace with its neighbors. We
must also block the sale of any arms to Azerbaijan, especially as
these can be used against Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh.”

Rep. Berman, an enduring ally of Armenian Americans who first rang
alarm bells last week about a pending U.S. sale to Azerbaijan of police
surveillance military hardware for helicopter border patrol purposes,
noted that he is “deeply disturbed by press reports about a brazen,
unwarranted cross-border attack by Azerbaijan that resulted in the
tragic deaths of three Armenian soldiers and the wounding of five
others. This outrageous action underscores the critical importance of
preventing the recently proposed sale of U.S. military equipment to
the Government of Azerbaijan – a sale I recently requested Secretary
Clinton to halt. Aside from the possible military application of
this equipment against Armenia, such a sale would send entirely the
wrong message to Azerbaijan, particularly in light of this horrifying
incident.”

Rep. Pallone was emphatic in noting that “this type of aggression
warrants a forceful condemnation of Azerbaijan’s actions by the
Administration. It is my hope that Secretary of State Clinton, who
is currently visiting the Caucasus and will meet with Azerbaijani
President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Wednesday, delivers a strong message
that the United States will not tolerate this type of violence and
will hold Azerbaijan accountable.”

Earlier in the day, while the Secretary of State was still in Yerevan,
ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian dispatched an urgent letter calling on
Secretary Clinton to forcefully condemn the fatal Azerbaijani attack,
which occurred near the Berdavan and Chinari villages of Tavush. The
Armenian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that three Armenian soldiers
were killed and another five wounded in the attack.

“Azerbaijan’s aggression, on the very day of your arrival in the
Caucasus, represents, in addition, of course, to a painful human
tragedy for those young men who were killed and injured, a brazen
attack upon the prospects for a fair and lasting peace in this
region,” said ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian in his letter to Secretary
Clinton. “It is long past time that the Obama Administration abandon
its practice of artificial equivalence – a failed policy whose only
response to Azerbaijani aggression and threats of renewed war has been
to issue generically-formulated and transparently toothless calls on
all parties to refrain from violence.”

WSWS: "Already Strained Relations Between Iran And Azerbaijan Have C

WSWS: “ALREADY STRAINED RELATIONS BETWEEN IRAN AND AZERBAIJAN HAVE CONTINUED TO WORSEN IN RECENT DAYS”

Iranian-Azerbaijani relations are tensed and especially for the last
time. World media refers to the issue and seeks for the reasons.

Another article by the World Socialist Web Site is published on
the topic.

“The already strained relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, which
acts as an outpost of the United States and Israel on the Caspian Sea,
have continued to worsen in recent days.

There was an intensification of the tone on both sides following the
Eurovision Song Contest held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku this
year. On May 29, Azerbaijan blocked a leading Iranian cleric from
entering the country after Iranian Islamists dubbed the song contest
a “gay parade.” There were protests against the other side in both
countries during the competition. Both Tehran and Baku have since
withdrawn their ambassadors.

On May 30, the Baku government also sent a note to Tehran asking the
whereabouts of two Azerbaijani writers who have allegedly disappeared
in Iran. The Russian media now write openly of a “diplomatic war.”

The reason for the strained relations is Azerbaijan’s close
collaboration with the United States and Israel in their war
preparations against Iran. Tehran has accused the government in Baku
several times of being involved in the assassinations of Iranian
nuclear scientists, which most likely were carried out by American
and Israeli intelligence agencies. Justifiably, Iran also feels
threatened by the systematic military rearmament of Azerbaijan,
which is being carried out by Israel and the US.

The states of Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Iran
have been arguing for years over a border survey of the oil-rich
Caspian Sea, whose territorial status for this reason has still
not been established. Tahir Zeynalov, an analyst at the Azerbaijan
Diplomatic Academy, told the online newspaper Eurasianet.org that
Azerbaijan would have to defend itself against possible attempts by
Iran to carry out oil exploration in an area that his country could
claim “was ours.”

During the recent Eurovision Song Contest, two Azerbaijani Coast
Guard vessels patrolled the port of Baku, and there were leaked press
accounts linking this maneuver to supposed threats from Iran. In
response to this open provocation, Iran conducted military exercises
near the Azerbaijani border with six navy ships”, the article writes.

Referring to other serious problems between two states, the magazine
continues: “The Azerbaijani military, and especially the Navy, have
been systematically rearmed in recent years by the US. From 2010
to 2011, Azerbaijan’s military spending rose from 3.95 percent to
6.2 percent of GDP, or $3.1 billion. In a telegram to the American
government in 2009, published by WikiLeaks, Azerbaijan is described as
“an important partner in the war on terrorism.” Azerbaijani rulers
supported the wars against Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Israel is also directly involved in the arming of Azerbaijan. In
February of this year, Baku agreed to buy arms worth $1.6 billion
from Israel. The new weapons systems ordered from Israel include
sea-based missiles and drones. Thanks to the support of the US and
Israel, Baku now has a more heavily armed navy in the Caspian region
than even Russia.

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton is expected in Baku on June 6 to
meet with Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar
Mamedyarov. On the agenda will be the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh,
a region over which Azerbaijan has been in conflict for years with
its neighbor Armenia.

The issue of Iran is also of central importance. According to the
Azerbaijani online newspaper AKZ.az, experts expect that Clinton
will discuss the “program for the war on terror and assistance to
Azerbaijan” and “technical re-equipment of the Azerbaijani secret
service.”

Turkey, which also supports a military intervention against Syria
and is currently at the forefront in equipping the Syrian rebels,
is sending four top military leaders in a public show of support
for Baku, underscoring the longstanding ties between Ankara and
the Turkic-speaking country. The Russian news agency Regnum quoted
an anonymous source who is close to the Turkish military, saying:
“With this step, Turkey wants to give Iran to understand that they
will not leave Azerbaijan on its own”, the article concludes.

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 15:34:21 – 05/06/2012

Interview with Cemal Bozkurt, columnist of Jiyan.org, who is visiting
Armenia within the project of support to Armenia-Turkey rapprochment
co-implemented by Yerevan Press Club, Eurasia Partnership Foundation,
Armenian Business Association and International Human Development
Center.

Cemal, you think the Turkish government is taking people for chicken.

How does the Turkish society pursue the establishment of a civil
society and proving the opposite to the government?

Everyone is dealing with it and everyone wants it but there is no
mainstream. A lot of people go where there is power.

Is Armenia a few steps ahead towards the development of the civil
Society? The civil society succeeded in saving Trchkan waterfall,
Mashtots Park in Yerevan, now it is struggling to save the marketplace
from demolition.

There are many more similar demonstrations in Turkey. A demonstration
was held two days ago. And similar actions are so many that we are
already tired of them. The problem is that these demonstrations mainly
do not end in victory.

In your opinion, should the society or the government pursue
development of civil society?

People, of course. If people are unable to push this process upward,
the same thing will happen when the border between Armenia and Turkey
was closed, there was no demand, the border was closed.

Nevertheless, does achievement of real change in Turkey require change
of government, should democrats come to power and is it possible to
achieve through elections?

I am the one who believes in change through parliamentary elections
but now the society cannot make its demands heard, it seems to be
stuck somewhere. I talk to people, I say there is no alternative,
the situation is deadlocked, and they do not know what to do.

We held parliamentary elections on May 6, and the government parties
won, lavishly offering election bribes. Most people explain acceptance
of election bribes by lack of alternative.

They buy votes in Turkey too, such as with coal. The use of such
mechanisms enables every government to reproduce. The same system is
in Armenia.

Do you condemn electoral bribe when there is no alternative?

I do not believe that there is no alternative. Even if there is no
alternative, boycott is the right choice. If they do not participate,
they boycott thus. For instance, I boycotted the referendum on reforms
in the Turkish Constitution.

Is the youth in Turkey pro-active, claimant?

It is a complicated issue, there is a politicized part of the youth
who are few and there are serious hindrances to their organization
and solidarity. In Turkey, for instance, about 700 students have been
arrested, which is a message for others. In other words, these facts
do not indicate a democratic Turkey.

I notice three shortcomings – relationship with AKP and Islam,
relationship with Cemalism and the Kurdish issue. Everything rotates
around it. Socialists are part of the opposition but after the military
coup of 1980 they are very weak today.

On these days I was in Kayseri where we argued with Turkish historians
on the absence of cross on Armenian churches, the scarcity of Armenians
there, and other issues. Are there many distorted historical facts?

There are certainly a lot of people who deny and confirm historical
facts. There are always people who reject official historiography. To
tell the truth, I do not follow historians, I follow everyday life
and do analysis myself, proceeding from everyday life. For instance,
whatever part of Anatolia you visit, there are all Armenian monuments
and one does not need to consult a historian or read a historical fact
for that, everything is seen with the naked eye, all this is enough to
draw conclusions and analyze. I saw an interesting coincidence. There
is an Armenian community and there is not a church in Malatia, while
in Kayseri there is a church while there are a few Armenians. In
order to hold a religious event the Armenians of Malatya need to
come to Kayseri. Although I am an atheist, I can’t help writing on
this situation.

The consequence of what is the genocide of 1915, in your opinion?

The Ottoman empire was on the verge of collapse, and it was trying to
bring into being the idea of pan-Turkism. As a result, the Armenians
lost everything, tried to exterminate the Armenian intelligentsia…

Cemal, in your opinion, how should the barrier between the Armenian
and Turkish peoples be overcome? How do you imagine the solution of
this issue?

In my opinion, the two peoples must be left alone. Depending on the
agenda, the direction adopted by the political figures, the policy
on Armenian either goes up or goes down. The elite which rules us
is there, and there are common people who have to accept the policy,
and we are helpless to do anything.

I want to give an example: Alexander the Great comes to Diogenes and
asks him what he wants. Diogenes says, ‘Now move at least a little
out of the sun.’ Thus, the governments must move out of the sun and
let the two peoples solve their problems.

I believe that if people are left alone, refrain from manipulations, no
problems will occur between peoples. They should leave the Armenians,
Turks, Kurds alone, and they must be able to solve the problems among
them, people must be able to interact with one another, come in touch.

What differences and similarities have you noticed while in Armenia?

I live in Istanbul, Istanbul is a mixed, cosmopolitan city but
Yerevan is very quiet, relaxed. Besides, I did not notice extremely
nationalistic expressions here.
