Baku – APA. Images of Azerbaijani Karabakh horses, and designs derived
from Karabakh carpets, have featured on a new range of top-quality
ties, pocket handkerchiefs and scarves, handmade from Italian silk,
by the long-established German fashion house EDSOR Berlin, working
in collaboration with The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS). These
were launched on 19 June at the historic Hotel de Rome in the heart of
Berlin during an outstanding sound and light show, attended by around
500 people from the worlds of fashion, business, politics and society.

This high-profile event was covered by German and Azerbaijani
television and numerous journalists.

Jan-Henrik Scheper-Stuke, Manager, EDSOR Berlin, stated: “The
inspiration for the collection is the Azerbaijani region of Karabakh.

This project and the recent Eurovision Song Contest in Baku have
stimulated our interest in Azerbaijan. We need to know more about
this country. I did not believe that an event of such elegance could
be held in Berlin, and we had to reach out to Azerbaijan to make such
an event possible. I am delighted by the Karabakh-Azerbaijan range,
and hope that this joint venture will be the first of many between
EDSOR Berlin and TEAS.”

Tale Heydarov, Chairman and Founder, TEAS, explained: “EDSOR Berlin
has supplied its products to politicians, film stars and the public
alike since 1909. It’s this sense of heritage that makes EDSOR
Berlin the ideal partner for the new Karabakh-Azerbaijan range of
scarves, pochettes (pocket handkerchiefs) and ties. Tonight, we are
celebrating this new collection, which represents Karabakh, one of
the most beautiful Azerbaijani regions.

“The Karabakh region was home to some of the foremost Azerbaijani
poets, authors, artists and composers. The Karabakh school of carpet
design, elements of which are featured on the ties and pochettes, is
renowned for its intricacy. The region has also given its name to an
eponymous equine breed – the Karabakh racing and riding horse. This
horse was originally bred during the 19th Century, and is known for
the golden tint on its head. I am pleased to see its athletic form
represented on the scarves.

“Today, the traditions and culture of Karabakh are in danger
of extinction, as the region continues to be occupied by
neighbouring Armenia, resulting in 875,000 Azerbaijanis becoming
internally-displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees. By wearing the
products in the new Karabakh-Azerbaijan range, you will be showing
that these people and their ancient culture are not forgotten. A
percentage of the profits from this range will also go towards
purchasing musical instruments for the Shusha Children’s Music School
in Azerbaijan. Shusha – the largest town in the Nagorno-Karabakh
region – was synonymous with Azerbaijani culture. It was occupied 20
years ago, and this purpose of this music school is to educate the
children of the IDPs to ensure that this culture is kept alive.”

The attendees then viewed a film about the inspiration and
manufacturing of the new range, which included an interview with
Sammy Voigt, Designer, EDSOR Berlin. The event was followed by music
and dancing.

Armenia’s Government Amassed Sufficient Excuses – ARF Dashnaktsutyun

ARMENIA’S GOVERNMENT AMASSED SUFFICIENT EXCUSES – ARF DASHNAKTSUTYUN

news.am
June 21, 2012 | 15:36

YEREVAN. – Armenia’s Government has amassed enough excuses for not
fulfilling its 2012-2017 program, opposition ARF Dashnaktsutyun Party
National Assembly (NA) Faction leader Armen Rustamyan stated at the
NA floor, presenting the Party’s stance with respect to the program.

In his view, this document’s primary ideology is not assuming clear
responsibilities, so that later the Government will not have to ask
forgiveness for not fulfilling the program.

“Hence, the declarative nature of the statement,” added Rustamyan. In
his words, the previous program-which practically was unfulfilled-has
served as a lesson for this.

“The second lesson is the external hazard risks, so that no one would
think the Government definitely answers for its pledges and plans.

Everyone can be at fault, except for us. The [global economic] crisis
cannot be bypassed,” they say.

“We are small and vulnerable. If we add to this also the climate
risks for agriculture, it will turn out that practically nothing can
be demanded from the Government,” said Rustamyan.

“In this case, it is incomprehensible as to whether it makes sense
to listen to this program and to discuss [it], if the opposition is
deprived of the opportunity to oversee its fulfillment.

But I do not agree that the people, who elected the Parliament,
agree to this program. And whoever is in agreement will enjoy the
fruits of his confidence several years,” added ARF Dashnaktsutyun’s
NA Faction leader.

Turkey To Restore Ties With France After Genocide Row

TURKEY TO RESTORE TIES WITH FRANCE AFTER GENOCIDE ROW

June 21, 2012

ANKARA (Reuters)-Turkey has agreed to restore all ties with France,
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Thursday, June 21, following
a breakdown in relations last year prompted by a simmering dispute
over the 1915 mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks.

Davutoglu Ankara cancelled all economic, political and military
meetings with Paris in December after France’s lower house of
parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of a draft law to make it
illegal to deny that the killings amounted to genocide.

France’s highest court overturned the law two months later but the
Turkish measures taken against France, which included restrictions on
French military aircraft and ships landing or docking on its territory,
have remained in place.

Speaking live on Turkish television, Davutoglu said Turkey’s Prime
Minister Tayyip Erdogan had ordered the sanctions be lifted after a
positive meeting with France’s new President Francois Hollande at a
world summit in Brazil.

“The prime minister gave the necessary instructions after meeting
with Hollande. Because of this new attitude from France, these
sanctions will be dropped,” Davutoglu said during an interview with
news broadcaster CNN Turk.

Davutoglu said he would travel to Paris on July 5 for bilateral
meetings where they would discuss taking additional “positive steps”
in the future.

Relations between the countries became strained under former French
President Nicolas Sarkozy and his election defeat earlier this year
was viewed in Ankara as a chance to start a new phase.

Muslim Turkey accused Sarkozy, whose UMP party put forward the bill,
of trying to win the votes of 500,000 ethnic Armenians in the two-round
presidential vote on April 22 and May 6.

Sarkozy had also been one of the most vocal opponents of Turkish
European Union membership.

Armenia, backed by many historians and parliaments, says about 1.5
million Christian Armenians were killed in what is now eastern Turkey
during World War One in a deliberate policy of genocide ordered by
the Ottoman government.

Turkey says there was a heavy loss of life on both sides during the
fighting in which Armenian partisans supported invading Russian forces.

The Ottoman Empire collapsed after the end of the war, but successive
Turkish governments and the vast majority of Turks feel the charge
of genocide is a direct insult to their nation.

Aznavour Realizes Shanghai Dream

AZNAVOUR REALIZES SHANGHAI DREAM
By Tiffany Tan

Updated: 2012-06-21 09:52

At 88, Charles Aznavour manages to be both a diplomat and a successful
singer. Yong Kai / for China Daily

It’s not every day you find a diplomat who’s also a hit singer.

What’s even more remarkable is how Charles Aznavour deftly shifts
between the two roles at age 88.

Over the weekend, Aznavour flew in from Geneva – where he serves as
Armenia’s ambassador – to perform at the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling
Foundation’s charity gala. That he agreed to do the show in exchange
only for transport to and from Shanghai was a pleasant surprise to
the organizers.

“What is shocking to me is that when he decided to come as a guest
of the charity, to sing for free, he asked for only one first-class
ticket. One ticket,” Yue-sai Kan, the gala’s chairwoman, says.

“A lot of our Chinese stars or Korean stars, they have one person
holding their lipstick, one holding their bag, one holding their
shoes. They have five or six people around them all the time, and
they’re just attending an event. They don’t even have to do anything.”

The gala on Monday drew close to 1,000 guests and raised 14 million
yuan ($2.2 million), according to the organizers. Part of the earnings
came from an accompanying auction, whose offerings included six pairs
of exclusive Christian Louboutin shoes.

The event’s proceeds will go to three charities: Operation Smile,
the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Shanghai Soong Ching
Ling Foundation Safety for Mothers and Infants Project.

Aznavour, a French-Armenian dual citizen, admits his main reason for
agreeing to do the fundraiser was not exactly altruistic. Singing
in Shanghai, he says, is a chance to cross off a name from the short
list of countries he has not yet visited.

The China he has found in Shanghai, however, turned out to be at
least half a century ahead of the China he envisioned.

“Very modern,” the grandfather of three says in an exclusive
interview at the presidential suite of a boutique hotel along The
Bund, Shanghai’s famous waterfront of concession architecture that
faces 21st-century skyscrapers.

“It’s not disappointing. It’s only that I had the idea – the very
romantic idea – to find out about the old China,” he says.

“Through movies and documentaries and expositions, like we had in
France in 1937, I had another vision of China.”

Though this is Aznavour’s first time in the country, his music is no
stranger to the Chinese.

She, which topped the UK Singles Chart in 1974 and was covered by
Elvis Costello for the soundtrack of the romantic comedy Notting Hill,
was one of the songs Aznavour performed at the Shanghai charity ball.

The other two were the French tune La Boheme and Yesterday When I
Was Young, which was sung by Roy Clark and entered the US Billboard’s
Top 40 in 1969.

“Usually the (song) choice is mine, but I’ve never been here, so ”
Aznavour says, trailing off.

He has written some 1,000 songs and sold a million records in a career
that has spanned seven decades.

And he has worked with some of the music industry’s biggest names,
including Celine Dione, Bob Dylan, Josh Groban, Elton John and Frank
Sinatra. In 1998, a CNN poll named him “entertainer of the century”.

Now, as a diplomat, he says his music helps open doors for Armenia.

Born to Armenian immigrants in Paris in 1924, Aznavour battled harsh
criticism to establish a solo singing career from age 19.

“They said my songs were not good. My voice was terrible. Physically,
I was not the type of man to be able to become a star,” he says,
referring to his small stature.

“They were wrong When I want something, I have to make it. I made it.”

Retiring from the stage is not in his plans – even if he has to
sing while in a wheelchair, Aznavour says, with his usual dry humor,
which didn’t seem to have been affected by jet lag.

ARTSVIK MINASYAN: THE GOVERNMENT’S PROGRAM IS BASED ON BANKING THINKING

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 14:17:07 – 21/06/2012

Artsvik Minasyan, ARFD, said in his speech relating to the program of
the government that the latter has been worked out based on banking
psychology, hence it can’t be effective. According to Minasyan,
the program can be just called “it will be good”.

He says 270 thousand people are jobless in Armenia, while the
government promises to open 100.000 jobs. According to Minasyan,
there are positive directions in the program, but since the latter
is not consistent with the current challenges, it is still doubted
whether we can fulfill the minimal, but I know it is impossible and
the reason is the acting political system in Armenia, said Minasyan.
