"The Wage Of Serzh Sargsyan’S Cousin Will Also Increase"

“THE WAGE OF SERZH SARGSYAN’S COUSIN WILL ALSO INCREASE”

August 28, 2012 13:25

The ANC representative comments on the economic indexes presented by
the Cabinet

Vardan Aramyan, the Deputy Minister of Finance, presented rather
optimistic economic indexes of the first 7 months during a press
conference recently. Aravot asked Vahagn Khachatryan, an ANC
representative and a former mayor of Yerevan, to explain whether
we could really say that the life had improved, since the wage of
Vardan Aramyan’s cousin had increased and we had such high indexes. He
replied, “You know what, the money in his and his cousin’s pocket,
as well as Serzh Sargsyan’s and his cousin’s pocket, will increase,
but when the wage of citizens doesn’t increase, when the poverty
increases, when he presents the change in the poverty rate methodology,
it is not true – in reality, the poverty has increased.

That person is satisfied with himself and his Cabinet. Only this
state can make such calculations. As for whether those calculations
correspond to the reality, the citizens must tell. In our country,
there is no economic policy. When he talks about the external debt,
in response to a question how they are going to pay that debt, he says
they will borrow more money; Greece and Spain are such countries. One
should be concerned about this most of all. There is another question
too – why doesn’t the Prime Minister present those outstanding indexes
of 7 months by himself, why doesn’t he convene a press conference?

Because he knows quite well that there are much more dangerous things
behind it and we cannot boast and be happy about those indexes today.

He talks about increasing the citizens’ revenues; it is not the case,
because if we compare wages with revenues in dollars, we will notice
that there is no such increase. Eventually, there is another index that
is called emigration. If the economic indexes of the country are high,
people don’t leave that country. Unfortunately, 49 thousand people
have left our country last year. In Armenia, the problem related to
the citizens’ emigration is more real and more dangerous.

If they don’t admit that there really is a demographical problem in
Armenia these days, it means that they don’t solve any problem in
Armenia these days and we don’t get rich, if say, the life of 10%
percent of people surrounding us improves. In the international
reports, Armenia is not among the stably developing countries, we
are a country that if a light wind blows in international markets,
in Europe, there will be a storm in Armenia.”

In response to our observation that the government had said in response
to the remark of the ANC about the emigration that there had been a
large-scale emigration when the very Pan-Armenian National Movement
(PANM) had been in power, Mr. Aramyan, in particular, had said during
his press conference that the tendency of emigration growth had been
there since 1993, Vahagn Khachatryan said, “Perhaps, Aramyan, as
well as the others, have some problems with memory because of their
age. They weren’t the years when the years of the PANM, they were
years of war and by the way, if they examine the statistical data
for emigration in 1991-1999 and 1999-2012, they will notice that the
situation has become much worse. If Aramyan or the government asks such
a question, tell them to talk about the birth and death rate, diseases,
they will see that it is much worse. I don’t want to talk about it,
because it is actually our misfortune. It would be better, if they told
us and presented to us what awaits us tomorrow, how are we going to
overcome this crisis? If ore prices in international markets decrease,
how is the economy going to develop? Ore and precious metals – gold
or stuff like that – account for 80% of our exports. These are just
numbers, about which they speak and try to present. I am convinced that
in October, when they will present the data for 9 months, there will
be lower indexes, given the problems with foodstuffs in international
markets today, given also the fact that they presented high indexes

for 9 months last year, as a result of manipulation, now they must
add to that, but there is nothing to add. How much of the expected
taxes have they collected , they have collected 25 billion out of 101
billion, so they have to collect the rest within the next 5 months,
which is not realistic and if you look at the rest, they have collected
it pressuring small and medium enterprises. The rules of the game have
not changed – Gagik Khachatryan, the chairman of the State Revenue
Committee (SRC), talked about this as early as last December, when he
said ‘tell me how to collect.’ They haven’t said so far how they will
collect. Now wait for that. It is really interesting and Aramyan is
too little a man to be able to express serious opinions and to make the
society accept those serious opinions as the truth. I assure you that
if the numbers were serious, Serzh Sargsyan would talk about them. Do
you remember when he made a long speech about emigration last year,
but he was provided with wrong numbers. Now he asks abroad, tells
foreigners to invest in Armenia, in order that people don’t emigrate.”

Big Armenian Heart: An Interview With The ‘Strongest Man Of Germany’

BIG ARMENIAN HEART: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ‘STRONGEST MAN OF GERMANY’
by Lilly Torosyan

August 29, 2012

Born in Iran to Armenian parents, Patrik Baboumian always knew he
wanted to become an international strongman. One of his fondest
memories with his father, now deceased, was watching the Incredible
Hulk rip off his shirt and magically transform into a green robust
monster. At the age of seven, the hopeful athlete moved with his
mother and grandmother to Germany, where he began to cultivate his
skill for strength.

Patrik Baboumian Shortly after breaking the German heavyweight loglift
record last year, the sportsman achieved the title of Germany’s
“Strongest Man.”

The current world log lift record-holder in the 105k-category (165
kg), Baboumian has plans to triumph in the World’s Strongest Man
competition this month.

The Armenian Weekly’s Lilly Torosyan conducted the following interview
with the German-Armenian strongman.

***

Lilly Torosyan: When did you first realize that you could make a
serious career out of weightlifting and bodybuilding?

Patrik Baboumian: I always had faith in my plans of building a career
in strength sports, but initially I was the only one that actually
believed it. My mother was my biggest obstacle when I decided to get
a gym membership as a 15-year-old. She was worried about potentially
bad influences that I could pick up in the gym. Now, she is quite
happy that I resisted her and pursued what turned out to be my destiny.

LT: Before moving to Germany at the age of seven, you lived in Iran,
and witnessed the Islamic Revolution. How did that shape your life?

PB: I have experienced a great deal of uncertainty in my early life and
therefore, I always tend to avoid uncertainty by planning my future.

LT: You’ve been a vegetarian since 2005. What prompted your desire
to switch to a vegan diet?

PB: I have been on a vegan diet for nine months now, and I have never
felt better in my entire life. Since I have chosen this lifestyle
for ethical reasons, I will stick to it-regardless of my career. My
daily regimen consists of a lot of soy-products, beans, and nuts as
protein sources, and rice potatoes and oats as my energy sources. I
also eat fruits and green smoothies several times a day to get all
of the micronutrients my body needs to stay healthy and fit.

LT: Many Armenians have proved successful in demanding sports such
as boxing, weightlifting, and wrestling. What, in your opinion,
explains this success?

PB: I have always had the feeling that Armenians are particularly hardy
people and to be successful in demanding sports like weightlifting,
strongman, or wrestling, you need to have a big, tough heart.

LT: What are your upcoming events?

PB: I have broken two world records this year and I have won the
European championships in RAW-Power lifting (GPA). Next stop is the
Log Lift World Championships, where I finished fourth last year and
hope to be good for a podium finish this year.

LT: How does it feel to be named “Strongest Man of Germany”?

PB: After I won the title of Germany’s Strongest Man and decided to
go vegan, I received a lot of media attention here in Germany and
many sponsorship offers from big German companies, so it seemed that
my day had come and suddenly everything I had worked for in the last
20 years started paying off. In the end, though, it is just another
title and I do not care too much about those. What I really enjoy
is going into every new day, trying to outdo myself and be a better
Patrik than the day before.

The Armenian authorities are trying to oust me from the country through
indirect pressure, Suren Zolyan, former rector of the Yerevan State
Linguistic University after V. Bryusov, told media, Tuesday.

“No local educational establishment has invited me to teach this year.

Only the European University invited me. In addition, the have
suspended by research activity in the interstate project without
notifying me of that. By such measures they make me leave the country,”
the professor said. Zolyan said that he will leave the country for
Estonia for three months to participate in a research project.

In the second half of the year he will return to continue teaching
in the country, he said. As regards the Mass Media rumors that he
had returned his claim against Education Minister Armen Ashotyan,
Zolyan said: “The process is being protracted as the court sitting
on the case was postponed from July 18 to August 30 as the YSLU has
not provided the necessary documents. The sitting is scheduled for
tomorrow and everyone will learn who is Ashotyan and what incorrect
steps he is making to huddle his jobs through,” Zolyan said.

To recall, on April 17 Armenian Minister of Education and Science
Armen Ashotyan signed a decree on dismissal of Souren Zolyan from the
post of the Rector of the Yerevan State Linguistic University and on
termination of the labor contract signed with Zolyan on 17 March 2008.

The press service of the Ministry reported that the dismissal was
preceded by two disciplinary sanctions imposed on Zolyan on April
6 and April 17. The first severe reprimand was for the fact that
Zolyan ignored Armen Ashotyan’s instruction not to leave Armenia over
the period from 19 to 23 March and devolved his responsibility upon
another person. The second reprimand was the response to the numerous
violations revealed at the Yerevan State Linguistic University during
the inspection carried out by the Ministry on March 20-27.

YEREVAN

YEREVAN, AUGUST 28, ARMENPRESS: In the Republic of Armenian in the
period between January and May 7364 girls and 8479 boys were born.

Among girls the most popular name is Nare. 354 girls were called in
that name. Armenpress was informed from National Statistics Service
that the most popular name among boys is David. 470 boys are called
by this name.

The statistics show that year by year Armenian names are becoming
less popular. Ethnologist Nikol Margaryan told Armenpress that it is
more common for girls. “In Armenian families traditionally male names
are inherited and the names of girls decide mothers who prefer modern
names” he said. According to him women prefer to call their children
by names of movie heroes.

In his words today in Armenia there is a tradition when choosing
names for children to be led by twin names. “Almost all names have
their twins. For example the twin name of Armen is Armenuhi. Today
many people prefer to have two children and call them by twin names”
he said.

Margaryan informed that in the beginnings of last century Armenians
used to call their newly-born children by Armenian military names
such as Aram, Gegham than more actual became Tigran. In 2011 in the
Republic were born 20287 girls and 23160 boys. Among girls the most
popular name was Mane and 839 girls were called so. The most popular
name among boys was Narek.

Nam Summit Shows Armenia Strategic Importance

NAM SUMMIT SHOWS ARMENIA STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE

Taking part in the NAM Summit Shows That Armenia Today Has More
Strategic Importance than Before, Richard Kirakosyan

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) – The director of Regional Studies center,
Richard Kirakosyan commented on NAM summit in the interview with
“1in.am News and Analysis” saying that the Non Aligned Movement
started in Tehran, is an important path to make free, independent
political decisions. He also mentioned that as the “cold war” between
the USA and the Soviet Union is in the past, this movement is not so
important today.

To the question how he treats Serzh Sargsyan’s possible participation
in the summit he said: “As a small country, Armenia will be clever
to taking part in that summit. This shows that nowadays Armenia has
more strategic importance than before.”

The expert also commented on possible reactions from the USA, Europe
and Russia saying that the influence will be small or won’t be at
all as Armenia has stable relations with all the parties. Richard
Kirakosyan is sure that the participation will be favorable for
Armenia.

To the question what will the reaction be from the USA, Europe and
international organizations on Armenia in case when Reuters wrote that
Tehran tries to skirt international financial sanctions with Armenia’s
help, Kirakosyan answered: “In reality expectations and pressures will
increase concerning Armenia and that will be done for the purpose of
behaving so that the sanctions against Iran were completely realized.

But Armenia understands this and will be more discreet in relations
with Iran as we have nothing to do have good relations with Iran.
