Canada Should Help Turkey Correct its Human Rights Record

On the occasion of a state visit to Canada by Turkey’s Minister of
Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmet Davutoglu, the Armenian National Committee of
Canada calls upon the Canadian government to use this opportunity to
encourage Turkey toward becoming a better practitioner of human rights.
Canada, a leader in the advancement of international human rights,
should help guide Turkey to correct its continuing abuses of human
rights both domestically and internationally. According to Amnesty
International’s 2012 country report on Turkey:

/”…Promised constitutional and other legal reforms did not occur.
Instead, the right to freedom of expression was threatened and
protesters faced increased police violence. Thousands of prosecutions
brought under flawed anti-terrorism laws routinely failed fair trial
standards. Bomb attacks claimed the lives of civilians. No progress was
made in recognizing the right to conscientious objection or in
protecting the rights of children in the judicial system…”/

//”Canada must not turn a blind eye to Turkey’s centuries-old and
continued disregard for human rights,” stated Dr. Girair Basmadjian,
President of the ANCC.”Rather, Canada must take every opportunity to
remind Turkey of its obligation to correct past injustices and ensure
that human rights are established in Turkey. Until Turkey does not
reform its abusive practices, its calls for regional justice and
humanitarianism will remain hypocritical rhetoric. We call on Foreign
Affairs Minister John Baird to take action in guiding Turkey towards
improving its human rights practices.”

Turkey’s state policy of denial of the Armenian Genocide is part of its
appalling human rights record.Recalling Canada’s Senate motion of June
13, 2002, Dr Girair Basmadjian added:”The Senate motion calls upon
Canada not only to recognize the genocide of the Armenians, which Canada
has since done, but also “/to condemn any attempt to deny or distort a
historical truth as being anything less than genocide, a crime against
humanity”. /Turkey’s attempts at denial and minimization are well known
to all; this includes pressuring even those countries who have
recognized the historical truth of the Armenian Genocide to soften their
statements on the matter.”Canada must condemn Turkey’s attempts to deny
the historical truth of the Armenian Genocide” stated the ANCC President.

‘Orphans Of The Genocide’ To Be Presented At Woodbury University

‘ORPHANS OF THE GENOCIDE’ TO BE PRESENTED AT WOODBURY UNIVERSITY

Filmmaker Bared Maronian during the making of “Orphans of the Gencode”

GLENDALE-On September 30 at 4p.m. the documentary film “Orphans of
the Genocide” will be screened at Woodbury University, Fletcher
Jones Foundation Auditorium, at 7500 Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank,
California. Four-time regional Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Bared
Maronian will present the broadcast version of the film to the public
(see ). The event is organized by Ararat-Eskijian
Museum in Mission Hills Calif.

The stories of these genocide orphans are told by the orphans
themselves, backed by expert opinion from such scholars as Deborah
Dwork and Keith Watenpaugh.

“‘Orphans of the Genocide” tells the story of hundreds of thousands
of Armenian Genocide orphans. It is a posthumous tribute to the memory
of those Armenian children victimized by the horrors of a systematic,
concerted process of annihilation, and a celebration of their survival
against all odds.”

Maronian has made use of archival photos and documents from the
Rockefeller Archive Center, Das Bundesarchiv (German National
Archives), Statens Arkiver (Danish National Archives), the
Library of Congress, U.S. National Archives, the Armenian Genocide
Museum-Institute, AGBU Archives, Noubarian Library, Houshamadyan
Archives, ARS Archives, and other private archival collections. In
an exclusive on-camera interview, 105-year-old Almas Boghossian of
Whitensville, Mass., tells how she became a Genocide orphan, walked
from Husseinig to Der Zor on foot, and how she was adopted by an Arab
family, admitted to an Armenian orphanage in Aleppo, and eventually
claimed by a relative in the United States.

Almas’s grandson, Bruce Boghossian, is the current president of
the American University of Armenia. Besides personal accounts, the
documentary also examines one of the largest orphan relief efforts of
mankind that was spearheaded by the American Near East Relief Sociey
(NER). Robert Wirt, a U.S. Special Forces Green Beret, based on his
great grandfather Loyal Lincoln Wirt’s memoirs, describes how Loyal
witnessed NER’s herculean task of establishing 212 orphanages for
200,000 orphans scattered from Constantinople to Aleppo.”

A special segment is dedicated to Alexandrapole, currently Gyumri,
Armenia, where an orphanage once stood that housed 22,000 Genocide
orphans. Another special segment of the documentary deals with the
Antoura Orphanage in Lebanon, where 1,000 Armenian orphans were
stripped of their identity and Turkified. Independent researcher
Missak Kelechian and world-renowned journalist Robert Fisk delve into
the details of this operation masterminded by Jemal Pasha.

This event is a fundraiser to complete the full version documentary.

BAKU: UK Ministry: Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Settlement Vital For Eu

UK MINISTRY: NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT SETTLEMENT VITAL FOR EUROPE

APA

Azerbaijan

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict’s settlement is of vital interest for the
region and Europe, British Minister of State for Europe David Lidington
said at a joint press conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward
Nalbandian in Yerevan on September 18, Armenia Today reported.

“Great Britain wants the peace process within the OSCE Minsk Group
to restore peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he said

Lidington said that the conflict settlement is in the interest of Great
Britain. “The fact that Azerbaijan has significant British commercial
interests means that Great Britain has an obvious interest to promote
peaceful reconciliation and stability in the South Caucasus,” he said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since
1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding
districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France and the U.S. –
are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan said
today that the “international community has enough facts not to
trust Azerbaijan.”

The Foreign Minister said this at a joint press conference with the
Minister of State at the Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office,
David Lidington, Mediamax reports.

According to Nalbandyan, this may be proved by the fact that Azerbaijan
assured Hungarian authorities that Ramil Safarov will continue to
serve his sentence in Baku.

“Azerbaijan has frequently shown that it not only doesn’t respect
the reached agreements but even ignores them, also during the Nagorno
Karabakh peace talks,” the Minister said.

Edward Nalbandyan recalled that in spite of reached agreements,
Azerbaijan has done everything possible to frustrate the creation of
a mechanism for investigating the incidents on the contact line.

The Minster also brought other examples, including Azerbaijan’s
rejection of the agreements on NK settlement reached at the meetings
in St. Petersburg, Sochi and Kazan.

Elles visent a condamner

a l’Elysee.

The conference was also attended by Claude Nicollier, the first
astronaut from Switzerland, who has flown on four Space Shuttle
missions.

“Man and Space” conference was dedicated to U.S. astronaut Neil
Armstrong who passed away this August. The conference was organized by
Garik Israelian, Armenian astrophysicist, who lives and works in Spain.

As lunar module pilot for Apollo 16 in 1972 Charles Duke became the
tenth and youngest of the 12 people who have walked on the Moon. A
resident of New Braunfels, Texas, he is currently chairman of the
board of directors of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.

Claude Nicollier has flown on four Space Shuttle missions. His first
spaceflight (STS-46) was in 1992, and his final spaceflight (STS-103)
was in 1999. He took part in two servicing missions to the Hubble Space
Telescope (called STS-61 and STS-103). During his final spaceflight
he participated in a spacewalk, becoming the first European Space
Agency astronaut to do so during a Space Shuttle mission.

We Listened To Black Country’S New Afterglow Driving To Artsakh – De

WE LISTENED TO BLACK COUNTRY’S NEW AFTERGLOW DRIVING TO ARTSAKH – DEREK SHERINIAN

September 18, 2012 | 00:23

Live performances of Derek Sherinian and Glenn Hughes in Yerevan and
Artsakh’s capital city Stepanakert last week have been welcomed. While
they stayed in Armenia for a week, gourmets were anxious about the
setlist a month in advance: Variations of Burning My Soul or New
Millenium? Planet X harmonies? Platypus-style jazz licks? Sherinian
doesn’t mind to be part of onstage democracy with an Armenian Dorians
band and contributes to their tracks onstage. Apparently there is
more than meets the musician’s eye: Sherinian is open to producing
Dorians’ next recording and to eyeing more Armenian bands, he told
in the interview to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Half of Black Country Communion – you and Glenn Hughes – was there
in Yerevan and Stepanakert. Did you think about performing BCC with
Dorians?

Dorians wanted to do BCC songs and Deep Purple songs. They pretty much
knew how they wanted their set to go, and it looked pretty good. I
rehearsed with the band for a week, just prepared for the show. I
thought the show was great; it was a fantastic concert in Yerevan,
having Glenn come up with a bonus. Then we had a travel to Artsakh,
which was quite a drive, and the show there was great as well. And
then we had a meeting with the President of Artsakh Bako Sahakyan.

Is he a rock music fan?

Yes, of course.

So the trip was cool, and I hope I can come and perform in Hayastan
[Armenia] much more in the future. There is a lot of talk about
me producing the next Dorians’ record, which I am very excited to
do. And I would like to start working with more Armenian artists in
a production capacity.

Is the sound of Dorians close to what you are used to produce?

Yes, they are progressive rock, so I think it’s great. I think Gor,
the lead vocalist, is incredible, and he’s gonna be a superstar. I
think they need a great record to take them to the next level, and
I hope I can help them with that.

Frankly, there was slight disappointment about your piece of the
performance. There were only two large solos for the entire show…

Well, they have a great keyboard player, Arman, and I didn’t want to
step on his toes at all. So my role was to lay a lot of B-3, and some
B-3 solos. I thought it rounded out the sound nicely.

Still it was great… But wonder how that would sound on your trademark
Nord synth.

Oh no, I didn’t bring any equipment. I just played what they provided.

But you took your Monster lead pad?

Yes.

Can you please tell about the upcoming album of Black Country
Communion, the Afterglow? Is it already finished?

It is, and it will be out on October 30th, you can pre-order it now
online. The record sounds great, we listened to it driving to Artsakh,
and it sounded great. I think this is the best BCC release.

But it is not going to be the last one, is it? Glenn Hughes once told
that it could be the final record…

Yeah, in rock’n’roll you never know. I hope not. We’ll see what
happens.

Is it like the previous two albums, bearing Deep Purple/Led Zeppelin
signature?

Yes, there was no departure from the sound.

…and the same dramatic lyrics by Glenn Hughes?

Yes.

Any guest performers?

No, just the band.

Can you tell about your new tour with Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan
and Tony MacAlpine?

Yes, actually I am practicing the songs now in my hotel room in
Yerevan. I’m very excited, I think this is going to be a great tour,
everyone is great, I have worked with all of these guys in some
capacity in the past, and I think we’re going to have fun time.

How did you decide to team up?

Mike called me and Tony and Billy last January and asked to play at two
shows that were related to drum events. We played, and it was great,
a good vibe. And so we figured that it would be nice to bring the
show up to the world. And we put it together, which is very exciting.

You have been playing with MacAlpine for years. Has he changed in
style since?

He plays an 8-string guitar now, and is constantly getting better.

Has the lineup changed the architecture of the band?

Well, Virgil is a different drummer than Portnoy. So the music is not
like Planet X. We’re doing a Planet X song, Apocalypse, from my first
solo record. But overall, it’s a different band, and it’s good thing
working with Tony. We work together for many years, and we know how
each other plays. It’s a good thing.

Did you rehearse a lot together for the tour set, or have you composed
an entire setlist from scratch?

Mike pretty much figured out the setlist, he set us the songs, and
we’ll have 2 days to rehearse in Poland before our first show.

Did you think about paying keyboards on Mac Alpine’s self-titled
2012 LP?

Well, Tony plays his fantastic keyboards. I think he does all he needs.

What about a keyboard battle? As far as I remember, you have never
performed one on stage.

Oh, no. I’m battling him on guitar (laughs).

Would you like to have a more dominating keyboard sound, maybe in
some ELP-type power trio?

I don’t know: I make music that I like to listen to. If you listen to
my 7 solo records, even though it is my record and I am in charge of
writing and producing it, I always have guitar as being a dominate
sound. I am just a fan of that. I don’t listen to keyboard albums,
I get bored. I think keyboards have their place. Definitely I’m an
aggressive player, and I want my sound to be heard, but I don’t want
to have everything backing me. I’m more of a team player. As long as
I am able to apply my style, I am content with that.

Still do you think there is any room for a keyboard hero in progressive
or metal world?

You know, keyboard hero is more like 70s – Keith Emerson etc – but you
can be a strong force in a band, be a keyboard player that is not just
some guy in the background. If that is what they call a hero, it’s OK.

What do you think of the latest Dream Theater’s A Dramatic Turn of
Events with Mike Mangini on drums?

I honestly haven’t heard it. But I’m sure they put a lot of work in
it, and I’m sure it sounds great.

With exception of BCC, you have been performing instrumental music for
the last 12 years. Don’t you miss vocal compositions, after parting
with DT and Platypus?

I love working with great vocalists, that’s what I preferred. But a
lot of times I liked doing instrumental music. So, there are both.

It’s cool working with Glenn in the Black Country Communion because
he’s a fantastic singer.

Would you like again to lay a keyboard part on a piece of sophisticated
lyrics, like A Change of Seasons, or an entire concept album?

I don’t know. Not really. I’d rather just play more ‘normal’ songs.

I’m finding my tastes are getting less and less progressive as I
get older. I just want to play more straightforward and memorable
stuff. I played a lot of notes in my career, and Planet X was even
more progressive, in some ways, than Dream Theater. That’s just my
tastes changing as I’m getting older.

Would you like to be a leading force in some keyboard counterpart
of G3?

It would be great, I would definitely be open to that. But I honestly
think that it’s all been talked about before, and I don’t think this
will be successful enough to tour and that enough people will come.

But they come for Joe Satriani and others in G3.

It’s different. Guitar is a different animal than keyboard. And I
don’t think that a K3 would work. But if someone put it together and
it made sense, I would definitely be involved.

Have you thought about playing guitar parts of your own on your
albums? You play some guitar…

Me play guitar?..

Yes, in Nightmare Cinema…

Yes, but I’m just messing around, I don’t play for real.

Any guitar players of the older generation you’d like to play? Jimmy
Page?

I’d love to play with JimmyPage. I think he’s one of the greatest
ever. I’m always up to play with great musicians.

What about Jeff Beck?

I’d love to, I do all the time. I hope that it happens.

What’s his first song on your wishlist to perform with him on stage?

Well, any of the classics: Wired, Blow By Blow… It would just be
great for me to play with my hero.

Has the music of the 60s influenced you in any way?

Absolutely, my parents always played The Beatles in the house when I
was a kid, so it’s very present in my musical upbringing. Bob Dylan,
The Doors were in my house.

Have you ever thought about playing Fender Rhodes like Ray Manzarek?

I have a beautiful Fender Rhodes in a 1974 suitcase, I just bought it
six months ago. That’s gorgeous, I love it. I won’t take it on tour,
but it’s in my studio for recording. I play Rhodes on Oceana and some
on the new Black Country record.

Do you think that the usage of Rhodes is fading?

Maybe so, but l love it. I have all vintage instruments – a beautiful
B-3, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, clavinet, mellotron. I do love the
sound of these vintage instruments, it’s great.

What about playing harpsichord on synth?

I’d love to. I played a real harpsichord, it’s great.

We are anticipating your appearance on stage in Yerevan with Glenn
Hughes, Joe Bonamassa and Jason Bonham.

I hope so, I hope we can put it together soon because we’ve already
talked about it.

Blood Money: Each Drop Of Gourguen Margaryan’s Blood Is Being Sold P

BLOOD MONEY: EACH DROP OF GOURGUEN MARGARYAN’S BLOOD IS BEING SOLD PUBLICLY FOR ONE MINUTE DROP OF AZERI OIL

Panorama.am
18/09/2012

Now, it has been known: upon his return to Baku on Friday 31st August
2012, Ramil Sahib Safarov, the murderer who hacked to death a fellow
Armenian officer – Gourguen Margaryan – on 19th February 2004, while
he was asleep, has been declared a free man and a national hero by
the Azeri President Ilham Aliyev .

Safarov was greeted in Baku by his fellow compatriots, given the
keys to a new apartment and a new car, praised, hugged and kissed,
was promoted to the rank of major, his back pay for the last 8 years
while he was in jail in Hungary refunded to him and the Azeri flag
was wrapped around his shoulders, honouring him with the ultimate
national accolade.

The international community and its various organisations protested
loudly and robustly against such unjust and vile action; debates,
meetings and demonstrations took place, petitions were gathered and
presented to various parliaments and governments and lengthy articles
were published in many newspapers: the world at large condemned
President Aliyev, while his people applauded that despicable action
and the Azeri youth realised and appreciated with great enthusiasm
the tolerance shown by its government.

A unique precedent was created where one can kill and be praised and
rewarded in Azerbaijan.

President Ilham Aliyev became the PARTNER IN THIS CRIME with the
hope that his people would – at last- praise and love him. The early
signs proved this to be true and the Azeris and their President –
in unison – declared once again and publicly their hatred towards
the Armenians during rallies, meetings and celebrations!

How scared, worried and terrified must our Armenian compatriots, still
living in Azerbaijan , be now for their lives and their families! And
very rightly too.

But that mad euphoria lasted only few days: the Azeri President and
the Azeri people realised suddenly that by their actions they had
sent a powerful signal to the world :

NO ARMENIAN WILL EVER BE SAFE UNDER AZERBAIJANI RULE, therefore the
Co-Chairs of the OSCE, Minsk Group and the many mediators who try
to solve peacefully the Karabagh issue will never again venture to
suggest that Karabagh must return to Azeri rule – no matter with what
degree of autonomy , no matter under what circumstances , no matter
when and no matter how. NEVER.

And that is good. That is what the Azeri President Aliyev and its
people have given us, the Armenian people, now. Against their will
and against their own judgement, by glorifying and legalising crime.

Since the 31st August, many government officials in the West are
rushing to Armenia to lobby and convince the Armenian Authorities to
remain calm, to not retaliate, to restrain from any violence and TO
NOT ROCK THE BOAT ! Because the Azeri Oil, flowing towards the West,
must be kept safe at all costs. At all costs !

Each drop of Gourguen Margaryan’s blood is being sold – publicly –
for one minute drop of Azeri oil.

Of all the thousands Armenians who have fallen during the Karabagh
War and have given their lives to keep Karabagh free and Armenian,
it is Lt Gourguen Margaryan’s death that has contributed the most
to this success and the tragic irony is that he did not fall on the
battleground but was hacked to death in his sleep by a coward and
a murderer.

Three days ago I watched on Armenian TV the return of the Armenian
Chess Champions to Armenia from Turkey where – of all the places
in this world – they had played in an International Chess( the
Intellectual and Civilised Game ), tournament, had defeated all their
opponents, had won with honours and had been declared Champion Chess
Players of the world. In Armenia the young Armenian Chess Champions
were greeted with gifts and praise , the Armenian flag was wrapped
on their shoulders , they were awarded Medals and Honours and were
welcomed as Armenian National Heroes for having won the Game.

In Azerbaijan the young Azeri murderer Ramil Sahib Safarov was greeted
with gifts and praises, the Azeri flag wrapped round his shoulders
and was welcomed as an Azeri National Hero for having killed a man.

What a difference in two cultures.

Although no argument will ever succeed to influence the West –
west is so dependent on Azeri oil – to take into consideration
that huge difference in the two cultures ( Armenian and Azeri )
but at least now, Western Countries will refrain from advocating the
establishment of “Azeri rule ” in Karabagh, for that will make them,
publicly, Partners-in-crime ( like the Azeri President Ilham Aliyev)
with the murderer and his horrific crime , will appear to be the seal
of approval for the mass murder of Armenians in Karabagh and will
show the world that the Armenians of Karabagh have been used as the
sacrificial lamb immolated on the altar of these countries ambitions,
aspirations and interests.

Prosperous Armenia To Form Coalition After Prime Minister Resigns?

PROSPEROUS ARMENIA TO FORM COALITION AFTER PRIME MINISTER RESIGNS?

tert.am

Secretary of Armenian Heritage party Styopa Safaryan views the
interview of the spokesperson for the Prosperous Armenia party Tigran
Urikhanyan as a message to change the government and the prime minister
in particular, for saving its face.

“For entering the coalition the PAP demands change of the government.

I cannot say whether they want to take the post or just seek PM’s
resignation,” Safaryan told Tert.am, commenting on Urikhanyan’s
interview.

Voicing hope that the consultation of Armenia’s President will bring
to some practical changes, PAP spokesperson told Zhoghovurd paper that
the party may form a coalition only in case it will be able to maintain
its political course and not be limited “by some preconditions.”

Asked who may be the PAP candidate – Robert Kocharyan, Gagik Tsarukyan
or Gurgen Arsenyan, Heritage party representative said he cannot
make conclusions but can say one thing clearly – “since 2010 Robert
Kocharyan was making attempts to be appointed country’s PM.” As to
PAP leader, he did not exclude this variant either.
