Turkey grounds another plane heading to Syria amid tensions

BEIRUT — A plane headed from Armenia to Syria was grounded Monday at
an airport in Turkey, less than a week after the country intercepted
another Syria-bound plane.

The plane, described as being on a civilian humanitarian aid mission,
was grounded in the eastern province of Erzurum in order for its cargo
to be examined, according to Turkey’s official Anadolu news agency.

It was headed to the besieged city of Aleppo, which has been the site
of clashes between rebels and government forces since July and a
regular target of government helicopters and fighter jets, leaving
many parts of the city destroyed.

Turkish authorities will examine part of the plane’s cargo and if it
does not violate civilian aviation rules, the aircraft will be allowed
to continue to Aleppo, the news agency reported.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Turkey granted the plane permission
to fly through its airspace only on condition it could search its
cargo for possible military equipment, the Associated Press reported.

On Wednesday, a passenger plane heading from Moscow to Damascus was
forced to land amid suspicion that it was carrying weapons for the
regime of President Bashar Assad. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan said the plane was carrying Russian munitions.

On Saturday, Turkey announced that it was closing its airspace to
Syrian civilian flights. Earlier, it had barred Syrian military
flights from flying over Turkey.

As tensions between Turkey and Syria continued to escalate, U.N. envoy
to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi was in Iran to meet with President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad regarding the ongoing Syrian conflict.

Brahimi appealed for Iran’s help in achieving a ceasefire between
Assad’s loyalist forces and rebel fighters for the upcoming Muslim
holiday of Eid Al-Adha, which will fall around Oct. 25. It is an
appeal unlikely to succeed as previous calls for a ceasefire have been
ignored by the Syrian government.

“If Syria disintegrates, the sectarian and tribal wars will spread in
Syria and spill over to the region and to neighboring countries,”
Brahimi said, according to the official Iranian Students’ News Agency.
“So it is necessary to come to an understanding and finish this dire
situation in Syria.”

Turkey orders Armenian plane bound for Syria to land for security check

October 15, 2012 share

An Armenian plane en route to Syria’s battered second city of Aleppo
was ordered to land in Turkey Monday for security checks on its cargo,
an Ankara Foreign Ministry official said.

Armenia said the landing of the plane, which both countries said was
carrying humanitarian aid, was pre-planned.

The move came just days after Turkey compelled a Syrian plane flying
in from Russia to land on its territory because of what it called
suspect cargo.

On Monday, “the civilian plane carrying humanitarian aid from Armenia
to Aleppo asked for permission to use Turkish airspace,” the official
said on condition of anonymity.

“We gave the permission on condition that the plane makes a technical
landing and it will take off if the cargo is clear after security
checks,” the Turkish official told AFP.

The Armenian plane was intercepted by Turkish fighter jets, the
Milliyet newspaper reported on its website.

Transport Minister Binali Yildirim said the landing referred to “a
landing by pilot’s consent,” in remarks carried by the Anatolia news
agency.

Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tigran Balaian told AFP that
“the plane, which was carrying humanitarian cargo to Syria, made a
pre-planned landing in Turkey. The landing in Turkey was previously
agreed with the Turkish side.”

The aid was being sent to Syria as part of an Armenian campaign called
“Help a Brother,” one of its organizers said.

“The humanitarian cargo included foodstuffs like buckwheat, rice,
sugar, pasta and so on,” campaign organizer Vahan Hovannisian, a
lawmaker from the nationalist Dashnaktsutiun party, told AFP.

There is a small Armenian community in Syria – between 60,000 and
100,000 people, according to estimates – most of whom live in Aleppo.

Since the conflict began, several thousand have fled to Armenia amid
fears that Christians could suffer if President Bashar al-Assad is
ousted and replaced by an Islamic regime.

Armenia also has close ties with Syria’s major ally Russia.

Turkey and Armenia have no diplomatic relations and their border has
been closed for more than a decade.

Turkish-Armenian ties have been complicated by disputes including
Armenian lobbying for recognition of 1915 killings of Armenians by
Ottoman Turks as genocide, and Armenia’s invasion of the Azerbaijani
enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Monday’s landing comes after Turkey and Syria closed their airspaces
to each other’s civilian flights at the weekend.

Ankara has taken an increasingly strident line towards the regime in
Damascus since a shell fired from the Syrian side of the border killed
five Turkish civilians on October 3.

Last Wednesday, Ankara forced a Syrian passenger plane en route from
Mosow to Damascus to land in the Turkish capital because it was
believed to be carrying suspect cargo.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the cargo contained military
equipment for the Syrian Defense Ministry.

Armenian humanitarian plane has landed in Aleppo

The Armenian plane carrying humanitarian aid for Syria has made a
successful landing in Aleppo.
On Monday, the plane landed at the airport in the Turkish city of Erzurum.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Tigran Balayan, it was a
routine landing, done in accordance with all agreements.

No problems with the cargo were identified.

Last week, Turkish fighters forced a Syrian A-320 airbus, on a flight
from Moscow to Damascus, to land at an airport in Ankara where they
illegally confiscated part of the cargo.

The Armenian Genocide should be assessed as it deserves, Armenian President says

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said today that
the Armenian Genocide should be assessed as it deserves.

The President said this speaking at the summit of the World Armenian
Congress in Yerevan.

“The 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide is drawing nearer. The
crime committed against our people is still to be assessed as it
deserves. It’s an all-national objective which you will touch upon
during your sessions, I am sure. The state of Armenia and the civil
society of Armenians across the globe have something to say on this
issue”, said Serzh Sargsyan.

“It’s not the only issue on the all-national agenda. We defended
Artsakh at war we had been imposed on. Now it’s time to fix the
justice on the diplomatic field. Here we also work hand in hand”,
noted the President.

Serzh Sargsyan also said that “our Syrian brothers and sisters found
themselves in an extremely tough situation now”. “We are next to out
compatriots and will help them with all the possible means”, the
Armenian leader concluded. –0–

Children make their first pilgrimage to Oshakan wearing letter `A’

>From mid-September on for several weeks a small Armenian village at
the foot of Mount Aragats becomes a tourist attraction.

Most of those visiting Oshakan are not quite usual tourists as they
just turned six. One by one buses leave for Oshakan where
first-graders from around Armenia visit the Church that is the resting
place for perhaps the most iconic figure of Armenian history – the
creator of the Armenian alphabet Mesrop Mashtots.

Arina Zohrabian discovers Oshakan along with her daughter Alexandra

In the Church they are met by a priest, who, with each group of
pupils, conducts a quick history lesson. Children descend to a small
cell to thank Mashtots for the written language that he granted to the
Armenians and mark their first learned letter of the Armenian
alphabet.

Shrouded in myths and legends and surrounded by vineyards and
pomegranate orchards, Oshakan (which is situated about 30 kilometers
from capital Yerevan, in the Aragatsotn Province) is the first
pilgrimage place for most Armenian children. Along with the first day
of school or the first received mark, visiting Oshakan is a kind of
initiation for Armenian pupils, and teachers start preparing children
for this ritual well in advance, in fact throughout September, telling
them about the Armenian alphabet and its history.

The modern Armenian alphabet which was created by Mashtots at the
request of King Vramshapouh, consists of 36 letters. Created 16
centuries ago, the alphabet, except for three added letters, has not
undergone any change and is used now entirely in its original form.

Mashtots, a monk, theologian and missionary, devoted 45 years of his
life to preaching Christianity and 35 years to the dissemination of
Armenian written language, opening schools in different provinces of
the country and promoting literacy.

Mashtots was honorably buried by Armenia’s ruler Vahan Amatuni in the
village of Oshakan, where on his tomb a church was built in 443.

Mashtots’s importance is also in the fact that he is the first
historical figure whose creating a writing system is not connected
with a legend, but is documented. While the uniqueness of the alphabet
he created is that it was fully adapted to the language, which means,
the letters are pronounced the way they are written.

Children feel very excited about their trip to Oshakan, but they are
still six-year-olds and act like ones. For them, going on a collective
trip out of town is a joyous occasion in itself. They happily eat
their buns made in the shape of the Armenian letter `A’, running about
a large courtyard of the St. Mashtots Church, playing hide-and-seek
amidst two-meter-high letter khachkars located close by.

In the meantime, a visit to Mashtots’s Oshakan grave is perhaps more
interesting for their parents. For at least five of them, who are
repatriates, the Friday trip was perhaps more `emotionally charged’
than for others.

Among such parents was Arina Zohrabian, who along with her daughter
Alexandra discovered Oshakan and got a first-hand experience of things
she had learned at a Sunday school in Lexington, Massachusetts, USA.
Zohrabian moved to Armenia 10 years ago when she was 23, she married a
local Armenian and now they raise two daughters.

`To be able to join our children and see them as they embark on this
beautiful journey of reading and writing in Armenia is a privilege –
and one I’m sure I wouldn’t be afforded in the US,’ she says. `And I
hope that Alexandra’s school years will not only be educational for
her – but for me as I witness firsthand the wonderful opportunities
provided to children here during their elementary schooling.’

Along with the American accent, one can hear in the class of my son,
Victor, also Syrian and Lebanese accents. All 5 repatriates came to
Armenia many years ago, settling down in and recovering their
motherland about which they had heard from their ancestors.

It will take quite some time before our children understand the
importance of the Armenian alphabet which was created once and for all
and which became one of the cornerstones of the Armenian Church and
had a huge spiritual influence on the Armenian people during the long
centuries when Armenia was under the control of other states.

Meanwhile, during this Oshakan trip, for their parents, locals or
immigrants, the idea of a unified Armenian nation acquired quite a
visible shape due to a single spoken and written language that helped
Armenians not to get assimilated while living in foreign land, a
language through which they can understand each other. And our
children and generations to come will be going to Oshakan to thank the
creator of this alphabet that enables us to do all that.

The Environmental Public Alliance has come out for resignation of
Armenian Nature Protection Minister Aram Haroutyunyan. EcoLur NGO
reports that 48 members of the Alliance joined the statement, except
Chairman of the Association for Sustainable Human Development NGO
Karine Danielyan and Chairman of Burg NGO Arman Vermishyan.

The statement of the Alliance reads: “The Environmental Public
Alliance expresses its mistrust in Nature Protection Minister Aram
Haroutyunyan and demands his resignation”. The Alliance thinks that
the new minister should be non-partisan to avoid any political
pressure and should have professional skills in the sphere of
environmental protection. Given the Aarhus Convention on Access to
Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to
Justice in Environmental Matters, the opinion of the concerned public
should be taken into account when appointing a new minister.

This decision has been approved by green activists, namely Mariam
Sukhudyan and lawyer Mary Khachatryan. The activists point out on
Facebook that it is necessary to bring the minister to responsibility
for office abuse and to demand compensation for the damage caused to
nature.

To recall, the environmentalists and activists expressed their
indignation at the cases of poaching in the Khosrov reserve. After
disclosure of the facts of illegal hunting, the director of the
reserve was dismissed by the order of Minister Haroutyunyan.
