$3.5 MILLION NEEDED TO START PRODUCTION OF BASALT FIBER IN ARMENIA

YEREVAN, November 16. / ARKA /. The minimum amount to start production
of basalt fibers in Armenia is $3.5 million, according to Gagik
Kirakosyan, general director of Onyx company.

“This business requires serious investments and the minimum amount
is $ 3.5 million,’ Kirakosyan said today during a conference on “The
importance and possibilities of Armenia in processing of non-metallic
ores.”

He said Armenia’s geographical location scares many investors away
and therefore the government should develop a special program to
boost this business.

According to Kirakosyan, Armenia has 125 billion cubic meter of basalt,
which is about 300 billion tons. He also said that basalt fiber has
several advantages compared with other materials.

“In particular, plastic produced from basalt fiber does not lose its
features at temperatures up to 900 degrees. They are also not expensive
and are of high quality. And it is a waste-free production,” he said,
adding that China is number one global producer of basalt fiber. -0-

The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Argentina (also accredited in the Republic
of Uruguay) has sent a note f protest to the Foreign Ministry of
Uruguay over the visit of the delegation headed by the President of the
Chamber of Representatives of Uruguay Jorge Orrico to Nagorno Karabakh,

visited Nagorno Karabakh on November 13, where he had a meeting with

Pen Day Of The Imprisoned Writer: Azerbaijani Is Voice Of Talysh Min

PEN DAY OF THE IMPRISONED WRITER: AZERBAIJANI IS VOICE OF TALYSH MINORITY

BAKU. November 15, 2012. Hilal Mamedov was arrested on June 21, 2012,
in Azerbaijan and charged with possession of 30 grams of heroin. If
convicted, he faces three to 12 years in an Azerbaijani prison. Now
he is one of seven Azerbaijani writers listed by the nongovernmental
organization PEN International as imprisoned writers. The 53-year-old
editor in chief of the Baku newspaper “Tolyshi sado” (Voice Of The
Talysh) has been held virtually incommunicado since his arrest.

In a Baku court in this summer, Mamedov was immediately silenced
by courtroom guards when he tried to speak on camera to an RFE/RL
Azerbaijan Service correspondent, describing how “when I was going
home from the hospital, I was arrested…” In July, Mamedov’s lawyer
told journalists he could face additional charges of spying for Iran
and inciting ethnic unrest.

For years, Mamedov — a mathematician by education — has been a
leader of Azerbaijan’s ethnic Talysh minority, inheriting the mantle
after Novruzali Mamedov (no relation) died while in prison in 2009, a
death his supporters suspect was the result of torture. When Novruzali
Mamedov was arrested in 2008 and charged with spying for Iran, Hilal
Mamedov formed a committee for his defense. After Novruzali died,
Hilal continued to fight for his rehabilitation.

Now, however, Azerbaijani human rights activist Leyla Yunus fears
that Hilal Mamedov is in danger of repeating Novruzali Mamedov’s fate.

“Hilal Mamedov was tortured, also as was Novruzali Mammadov,” Yunus
says. “And there is great pressure on all the Talysh community of
the south of Azerbaijan that they talk against Hilal Mamedov.”

According to the Institute for Democracy and Peace and the
nongovernmental organization Front Line Defenders, Mamedov was arrested
in order to keep him from appearing on a Russian television talk show,
where he planned to criticize the Azerbaijani government for spending
millions of dollars to host the Eurovision song contest while doing
nothing for the Talysh.

The other Azerbaijani writers listed as imprisoned by PEN International
are Nijat Aliyev, Ramin Baymarov, Nazim Guliyev, Ayudin Janiyev,
Taleh Khasmammadov, and Avaz Zeynalli. (RRE/RL)

YEREVAN. – There are 430,000 agriculturally-cultivated lands and
340,000 farms in Armenia. That is to say, 1.2-1.3 hectares of land
falls to each farm, PM Tigran Sargsyan said Friday speaking at the
Armenian State University of Economics. He added that such agricultural
model cannot exist for long in the country.

In his words, it is indispensable to increase and enlarge productivity,
but there are serious challenges on the way. A total of 1.1 million
people in Armenia are engaged in agriculture and their significant
portion will become unemployed when productivity is increased and
enlarged. That is why the Government seeks to create new jobs in
the villages, and by way of designing an agricultural and rural
development concept, so that the villagers would not leave their
villages and move to capital city Yerevan.

Also, community enlargement, farm enlargement, and cooperation
development activities are simultaneously conducted in Armenia.
