EXPERT: CHANGES IN ARMENIA’S POLICY ON RECOGNITION OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE IMPLY AN INTELLECTUAL FIGHT AGAINST TURKEY
by Nana Martirosyan

ARMINFO
Tuesday, July 16, 19:32

The changes in Armenia’s policy on recognition of the Armenian
Genocide imply an intellectual fight against Turkey, Professor Rouben
Safrastyan, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the
Armenian National Academy of Sciences, said at a press conference
on Tuesday.

He said that he welcomes Armenian Prosecutor General Aghvan
Hovsepyan’s statement about the need to retrieve the Armenian lands
if that statement marks the beginning of changes in the policy on
the Armenian Genocide recognition. “If this marks the beginning of
changes, we should immediately start preparing for the intellectual
fight and unify the Armenian worldwide”, he said.

To recall, during the July 5 Pan-Armenian Forum of Lawyers dedicated
to the forthcoming centenary of the Armenian Genocide, Armenian
Prosecutor General Aghvan Hovsepyan said that the assignees of the
Armenian Genocide victims should receive material compensation, the
Armenian Apostolic Church should be given back the churches and lands
belonging to the Church, and Armenia should retrieve its territories.

He stressed that one of the Armenian lawyers’ goals is to detect the
organizers and instigators of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman
Empire.

In response, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that the statements of
the person holding such a high post allegedly run counter to Armenia’s
UN and OSCE accession commitments.

THERE WERE NO OTHER CLOTHES FOR HARUTYUNYAN TO WEAR IN COURTROOM – LAWYER

17:53 16/07/2013 ” LAW

Hrachya Harutyunyan, the driver of the truck that suffered a crash
near Podolsk, Russia, claiming 18 lives was brought to the courtroom
wearing a woman’s robe because there were no other clothes for him to
wear at the moment, Harutyunyan’s lawyer, Erik Chabanov, was quoted
as saying by RIA Novosti.

The doctors had no intention of humiliating him, he added.

Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan earlier sent a letter to Russia’s
Human Rights Commissioner Vladimir Lukin, asking him to examine the
reasons of degrading treatment of the Armenian citizen.

“The doctors had to tear off Harutyunyan’s clothes when he was brought
to hospital, and as there were no other clothes in the hospital, they
dressed him in a woman’s robe. They had no intention of insulting him,”
the lawyer said.

Meanwhile, Chabanov admitted that the doctors could get in touch with
him to ask for clothes, but they did not do so.

To note, a truck crashed into a passenger bus on July 13 near
Podolsk, Russia. The bus split in two. 18 people were killed, 30 were
hospitalized with injuries. The truck driver, Hrachya Harutyunyan,
was arrested on Monday. He was brought to the courtroom wearing a
woman’s robe.

Mobilizing For Peter Koutoujian The Right Move For All Armenians

MOBILIZING FOR PETER KOUTOUJIAN THE RIGHT MOVE FOR ALL ARMENIANS

By Michelle Hagopian

July 16, 2013

ANCA Desk

For those who don’t know, Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian,
a longtime advocate for and participant in the Armenian-American
community, is running for Rep. Ed Markey’s now vacant House seat. He
announced his campaign run recently and the ANCA has endorsed him,
putting our full support behind one of our own.

Koutoujian Hagopian 225×300 Mobilizing for Peter Koutoujian the Right
Move for All Armenians Hagopian (L) with Koutoujian

This is huge. How many Armenians do you know of who have staged
legitimate runs for the U.S. Congress? I can think of less than
a handful. Peter is a strong voice for Armenian issues, including
genocide recognition, and he would advance our cause to the national
level if elected.

This week, Koutoujian came to the Hairenik Building in Watertown,
Mass., to be interviewed by the Armenian Weekly and to meet the
supporters from all of our sister organizations. The ANCA, ARS, ARF,
AYF, Homenetmen, and Hamazkayin were all there to show Peter we have
his back now and always. It was a great opportunity to chat with him
and hear where he stands as a candidate.

He describes himself as a moderate Democrat and someone who is willing
and able to work with anyone. Too often as voters, we get wrapped up
in ideology and labels. I’ve seen it in ANCA work-people will call
and tell me they can’t vote for a Democrat or Republican, or ask why
the ANCA endorsed this person over this person.

When it comes to Armenian issues, party and affiliation should not
matter. If someone is willing to push for our views and values on
Capitol Hill and beyond, we should learn from them and embrace their
efforts. Because they will be the one speaking on your behalf at a
higher level.

That person right now is Peter Koutoujian. And he needs the support
of the Armenian community in Massachusetts and across the country.

Fundraising is crucial, no doubt, but turning out to vote is even
bigger. The 5th district of Massachusetts-the seat left open by Rep.

Markey-is densely populated with Armenians. It covers Watertown,
Belmont, Waltham, and Lexington, among other towns that hold the core
of our community.

If you don’t know who Peter is by now, you’ve been living under a rock.

It’s time to wake up and help out one of our own. Peter is a friend
to all and has strong values, a strong voice, and a chance to truly
elevate all Armenians in our nation’s government.

The ANCA has endorsed him because he is very good on our issues, which
are obviously your issues too. Why should you vote for Peter? For all
of the reasons above and many more. He’s an approachable, friendly
guy who thanks his supporters in Armenian and who has a long public
service track record.

If you’re a business owner, why not invite Peter to come to your
business and take a photograph to post on your walls? If you show
you support him, you should encourage your friends and customers to
support him, too.

If you’re a student or young person, why not get the word out
on college campuses or in your summer programs that there’s an
up-and-coming Armenian candidate in this special election? The youth
play a huge role in not only registering voters but for mobilizing
as volunteers on the campaign trail, by phone banking, knocking on
doors, etc.

It doesn’t matter what you can or can’t offer. If you don’t have a few
bucks to throw toward Peter’s campaign, that’s fine. What you can do
is vote for him in the fall. That’s the most important factor. If
you want to get involved in his campaign or voice your support,
reach out to me at [email protected].

In the meantime, check out the ANCA’s Facebook album titled “Peter
Koutoujian for Congress.” You should also check out his official
website and “like” his page on Facebook.

Let’s get Peter to Capitol Hill. Support a fellow Armenian today.

Armenian-Iranian Economic Potential Great – Ara Petrosyan

ARMENIAN-IRANIAN ECONOMIC POTENTIAL GREAT – ARA PETROSYAN

13:06 16.07.13

Iran is Armenia’s partner, the bilateral trade turnover is $300m and
can be doubled, Armenia’s Minister of Economy Ara Petrosyan stated
at an Armenian-Iranian business forum on Tuesday.

The forum is one more step toward strengthening the bilateral economic
ties and achievements in other fields.

“Armenian-Iranian economic relations have great potential. The
Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental economic commission holds regular
discussions of the bilateral relations. About 60 Iranian businessmen
have arrived in Armenia, which is good occasion for establishing new
contacts,” he said.

Yahya Ale-Eshaq, Chairman of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce,
Industries, Mines and Agriculture, pointed out the problems that
need solving.

“Both the countries are creating favorable conditions for investments,
industry, agriculture, banking, education and culture. The two states’
authorities are willing to develop the relations. Iran’s private
sector is willing to cooperate with Armenia’s business community
as well. The sixty businessmen’s visit to Armenia is evidence of
their willingness to establish contacts with the Armenian side,”
he said. Mr Yahya Ale-Eshaq invited Armenian businessmen to the next
business conference in Tehran.

Speaking of the problems, he said: “We are cooperating with many of
our neighbors by means of the visa-free system. So we are waiting for
the Armenian government’s decision because we have no legal problem.

We also have a preferential tariff treatment problem, as Armenia has
set high tariffs for Armenia – 20 to 30 percent -, which, in turn,
causes a rise in the self-cost of products.”

With respect to product distribution, Mr Yahya Ale-Eshaq pointed out
the need for an Iranian trade center in Armenia.

The Armenian and Iranian Chambers of Commerce and Industry signed a
memorandum of understanding on the development of economic, technical
and cultural relations.

Harutyunov Denies, Margaryan Confirms

HARUTYUNOV DENIES, MARGARYAN CONFIRMS

July 15 2013

On July 5, Aravot.am published the information that the former
President of the Youth Party of Armenia Sargis Asatryan was arrested
in Moscow on suspicion of keeping especially a large-scale drug. The
latter has been living in Moscow for several years and was the Chairman
of the Board of Trustees of the Armenian community in Moscow.

A few days later, General Roman Arutyunov representing the chief staff
of the Armenian community in Moscow denied that Sargis Asatryan had
been the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Armenian Community
in Moscow, and that they had no connection with Asatryan at all. In a
conversation with Aravot, the President of the “Anti-Corruption” NGO
Gagik Margaryan said that he has a formal document at hand saying that
on June 28 a decision was made at the closed court session to arrest
Sargis Asatryan, and he was imprisoned. Rather heavy charge was made
to S. Asatryan, and the investigation is proceeding Garnik Margaryan
does not consider right to comment at this stage. Only reflecting the
General Harutyunova’s statement, he said,- “I know Sargis Asatryan
a very long time ago. YPA was not yet established, and was in close
relations with Artashes Geghamyan. The 2003 elections, when the
opposition failed, and Robert Kocharyan seized the power, after that
Sargis Asatryan moved to Moscow. And during our meeting, last year,
he gave me his business card, which said that he is the Chairman of
the Board of Trustees of the Armenian Community in Moscow. Who denies
what, it is his problem? “Mr. Margaryan is sorry that such a young
man as Sargis Asatryan is, who have a good education, have attended
some schools, and are the future of our country, instead of having
their place in their country and have a perspective, fascinated
at such evil. He also regrets that S. Asatryan, by and large, will
become a scapegoat. Margaryan still hopes that the charges will be
denied because such accusation throws a shadow on the reputation of
the Armenian nation. Nelly GRIGORYAN
