CHICAGO MARKS ‘LISBON 5’ ANNIVERSARY

GLENVIEW, Ill.-The Chicago-Armenian community marked the 30th
anniversary of the martyrdom of the “Lisbon Five” on Sun., July 28,
with a special Requiem Service at All Saints Church and a commemorative
program organized by the Chicago ARF “Christapor” Gomideh.

The portraits of Setrak Ajemian, Ara Kurjuhlian, Sarkis Abrahamian,
Simon Yahneyan, and Vatche Daghlian were displayed near the altar
as Archpriest Zareh Sahakian delivered his sermon focusing on their
sacrifice.

Following church services, the crowd gathered in Shahnasarian Hall for
a memorial dinner offered by the All Saints Church Ladies’ Guild and
a commemorative program hosted by the Gomideh. During the memorial
dinner, a special slide presentation showed photos of the Lisbon
Five, along with the messages they left behind. The presentation also
included the text of the communique issued during the operation, as
well as pictures of the Turkish Embassy compound as it was surrounded
by Portuguese security forces.

The commemorative program was opened by Greg Bedian, representing
the Gomideh. After brief opening remarks, he read the text of the
communique issued by the Armenian Revolutionary Army during the attack
and then introduced a video presentation showing the pictures of the
Lisbon Five, the Portuguese security forces entering the Turkish
Embassy compound, the funeral and burial of the Lisbon Five, and
video clips of the five young men singing “Verkerov Li.”

>From a distance of 30 years, in this post-September 11 world, Bedian
said, it might be difficult for some to comprehend such an act. To
put the Lisbon operation in perspective, he quickly reviewed the
trajectory of the armed struggle waged in the 1970’s and 1980’s, from
its inception by genocide survivor Kourken Yanikian in 1973, “which was
the spark that ignited a powder keg of frustration amongst Armenians,
particularly the youth,” to the infamous “Orly” operation, which
took place only 12 days before Lisbon. He continued by outlining how
Lisbon differed from previous acts, and how “anonk katsin anveratarts”
(the Lisbon Five had gone not as assassins but as martyrs).

Nairee Hagopian, Armen Papazian, Khajak Arakelian, and Maral Abrahamian
were then invited to the podium to read excerpts from the words of
the fallen Ungers’ families. The sentiments of the family members
drew applause from the crowd, as they too shared their pain and pride.

Bedian then spoke of the lasting impact of Lisbon on the Armenian
people. He described how their sacrifice inspired and motivated an
entire generation of youth to dedicate themselves to the Armenian
Cause, from those that would pursue justice through political activity,
to those who would fight in Artsakh’s war of liberation.

Abrahamian returned to the podium to recite Hovanes Shiraz’s poem,
“Lisboni Voghchagechnerin.”

Following the recitation, Bedian noted that in 1983 he, too, was
21 years old, the same age as Sako and Simon. “I went on to finish
college, become an engineer, marry, and raise a family,” he said.

“Neither Sako nor Simon, nor Ara, Vatche, or Seto got that chance.

They will forever be 21, 20 and 19.”

“They gave it all up for our nation, to serve as examples of sacrifice,
to move the Armenian Cause forward.” He then asked the crowd to rise
for a moment of silence to honor the memory of the Lisbon Five. He
concluded the program by stating, “May god grant them peace, and may
we soon obtain the justice for which they sacrificed themselves.”

SYRIA UNREST, ISRAELI PLOT TO DESTABILIZE MIDEAST

Press TV has invited Dr. Kevin Barrett, an author and political
commentator from Madison, to its Debate program to shed more light
on the ongoing turmoil in Syria.

– Dr. Barrett, looking at this situation from the very start of this
strife in Syria we have seen a couple of attacks by the Israelis and
basically we have seen no condemnation or very little condemnation
from the international arena of the bombing of a sovereign country.

How is it that the international front can totally ignore and not
condemn this type of attack?

– That is a very good question. It seems that there are two sets of
international laws out there, one set for Israel and the other set
for everybody else and the only international law that applies to
Israel says that Israel can do anything Israel wants and nobody can
do anything about it.

Israel has been attacking various countries and forces all over the
world. They even attacked themselves; we have recently learned that it
was an Israeli Mossad that blew up the Jewish Community Centers and
targets in Argentina. This scandal is breaking now in Argentina so
they attack anyone they want but what is really ironic here is that
in Syria the destabilization program against the Assad government is
being led by these militant Takfiri, so-called al-Qaeda fighters who
are funded by Saudi Arabia and presenting themselves as extremist
Islamic militants and of course as extremist Islamic militants they
have to pretend that they do not like Israel but oddly enough it seems
that they are coordinating their activities with the Israelis and the
Israelis are intervening in the war in Syria on behalf of al-Qaeda
and this, of course, raises all kinds of questions about what this
Takfiri, al-Qaeda group really is all about.

– Dr. Barrett, what about what Mr. Korb has said that, basically, it is
the opposite that as a matter of fact with the situation with al-Qaeda
now involved it actually leads to a lack of stability and basically
that this situation that he is saying, as far as a coordination before
with the Assad government and also, basically that it has always been
Hezbollah attacking Israel and leading to instability.

Your take on his comments?

– Right, well he is just giving us too classic Zionist big lies,
which is not surprising because, of course the motto of the Israeli
Mossad is: “By way of deception though shalt do war.” So they are
putting out big lies all the time. It is part of their war on the
world and let us look at these two big lies that we just heard.

The first big lie is this notion that Hezbollah has been attacking
Israel in acts of aggression, that is such a joke. Israel has been
attacking, bombing, destroying, massacring people in the sovereign
state of Lebanon, going back for decades and Hezbollah has simply
been a resistance movement that is formed in Lebanon against this
Israeli aggression.

And the second big lie that we just heard is that Israel wants
stability in the region. That almost have me falling off my chair
here, rolling on the floor laughing, because Israel is the biggest
destabilization factor in the Middle East and the destabilization
and the doctrine that says that Israel, in order to survive, must
destroy all of the sovereign states around it by splitting them
up into ethnic and sectarian enclaves, has been Israeli strategic
doctrine since the days of the Oded Yinon Plan in the 1970’s.

That is why Israel has created al-Qaeda or at least steered al-Qaeda,
greatly encouraged the formation of these extremist Takfiri militant
groups and used them to destroy sovereign states throughout Middle
East.

They have destroyed Sudan, they have broken it into two pieces.

Southern Sudan is run by the Israelis. They have smashed Iraq into
three pieces and the Israelis have a big interest in the Northern
Kurdish part of Iraq. The Israelis have been part of the operation
that has destroyed Libya and the whole so-called war on terror,

So I would like to see if our friend in Washington (Lawrence Korb)
can come up with any more big lies for me to debunk.

– Well, what do you think about that Dr. Kevin Barrett? With one of our
viewers, basically, what he is saying is that the majority of this,
what is going on in Syria is also, basically to weaken Hezbollah, to
weaken the Line of Defense that is fighting against the Israelis. Your
take on that comment sir?

– I think that the viewer is absolutely right. Hezbollah defeated
Israel, in fact handed Israel its, really first ever military defeat
in the summer of 2006 and Israel has not forgotten this and they have
been working and trying to figure out a way to get back at Hezbollah
and to weaken it because not only did Hezbollah defeat Israel then,
but it has been developing an even more robust capability, which
will of course prevent Israel from any more occupations of Lebanon
and in the long run it will undermine Israel’s claim to be able to
win any engagement in the region, which is a claim that has really
been a sort of a firewall against any serious resistance to Israel.

So yes, there is this Axis of Resistance that runs through Iran,
Syria and Hezbollah and Israel is doing everything it can to stop it.

Israel has been screaming from the roof tops that they want to attack
Iran and they apparently do not think that they can do that until
they can completely destabilize Syria. So that is the real reason
for the war on Syria. This an Israeli war on Syria, primarily, first
and foremost.

And secondly I would like to address what the other guest, Mr. Korb,
said. He claims that the Bush administration launched the so-called war
on terror and invaded Iraq, purely to create democracy and that this
wasn’t an Israeli operation. Well I would like to remind him that who
was the Bush administration? The Bush administration policy was run
by Paul Wolfowitz with Scooter Libby and a long list of other dual
citizens, Israeli-American dual citizens. These are the people who
created PNAC, Project for a New American Century, which called for a
new Pearl Harbor in a document that they issued exactly one year before
the 9/11 attacks and those same people, these Israeli-American dual
citizens, who created the war on Iraq, who helped orchestrate 9/11 to
make that war possible, they are the same people who are working for
Netanyahu put out the Clean Break document in 1995, which was exactly
the same document, essentially, as the Project for a New American
Century were building America’s defenses document that was put out
in September 11th 2000, exactly one year before the 9/11 attacks.

So it is absolutely clear that these hard-line neocon Likudnic
Zionist elements ran the Bush administration, blew up the twin towers,
attacked the Pentagon in a false flag event and used that to attack
and destabilize the Middle East in hopes of making it more amenable
to Israel.

[In response to Mr. Korb]: They are the only non-Jewish members of
Project for a new American Century. They are the only two Goys in PNAC.

[In response to Mr. Korb]: Israel did attack Hezbollah and did not get
anything. Hezbollah was not trying to steal Israeli territory. Israel
is the character that steals territory and Israel was the aggressor
that attacked Lebanon. Hezbollah simply defended itself and prevailed
and survived as Israel attempted to destroy it and weaken it and
Israel was unable to do that. It was a clear defeat and this is the
first time I have ever heard anyone claim that it was not a defeat
for Israel in 2006. That is very interesting.

– Dr. Barrett, I want to look at this situation as far as these
countries that are supporting the Syrian insurgency, like the United
States, like the UK, like Qatar, like Saudi Arabia, that right now it
seems that they are more under pressure because as we have seen more
and more victories by the Syrian military and interestingly enough
whenever we see that happening, it appears that another Israeli attack
takes place. But my question at hand, is that what happens to these
countries? How important is it for these countries to make sure that
the Assad government falls? What happens if that does not occur?

– Well, I think that each of these different players has their
own motivations for destabilizing Syria. I think that the US is
primarily doing this because US’ foreign policy, especially since
the coup d’etat by the Likudnic Zionists on September 11, 2001,
has been completely dominated by this hard-line Zionist faction in
Israel, so the US is, basically, just obeying the Israeli orders in
its Middle East policy. Other countries in the region are a little
bit more independent, although maybe not a whole lot.

Saudi Arabia, I think is terrified that the Arab Spring is going to
bring down its regime and so Saudi Arabia has worked together with
the Israelis and the Americans to steer the Arab Spring in a different
direction rather than taking down these Western and Zionist-supported
puppet dictators like the Dictators in the Persian Gulf and in Saudi
Arabia; they want the Arab Spring to go after the few remaining
independent countries in the region, which is how they went after
Libya and now they are going after Syria.

HAMAS LEADER: US EFFORTS TO RESTORE PEACE TALKS SERVE ISRAEL’S INTERESTS

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior leader of Hamas movement deplored the US
attempts to revive ‘peace talks’ between Israel and the Palestinians,
warning that Washington is trying to provide the Zionist regime’s
interests.

“The US efforts to restore the negotiations are meant to render
service to the Zionist enemy and meet the Zionists’ interests,”
Khalil Abu Laila told FNA on Wednesday.

He downplayed the effectiveness of the so-called peace talks in
restoring the rights of the Palestinian nation, and said, “Israel
merely understands the language of force and we may not put aside
the weapon of resistance and we will use it against the Israeli enemy.”

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State John Kerry claimed that he
finally “convinced Israeli and Palestinian officials to return to the
negotiating table.” This is while the prospects for peace appear just
as unlikely as before.

Head of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement Khalid
Mashaal had underlined in May that Washington’s efforts to restore
peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians are doomed to fail
since the US secretary of state has not presented any solution to
the ongoing crisis.

“The US secretary of state has not presented any solution to settle
the conflicts between the Palestinians and the Zionist regime and
therefore the country’s efforts are doomed to fail similar to the
past,” Mashaal said.

He complained that John Kerry has not adopted a serious approach to
settle the Palestinian issue fairly because it has never pressured
Israel as the occupier, and has just pressured the Arab sides and
the Palestinian authority and presented some useless projects.

The US secretary of state has claimed to be seeking to revive direct
peace talks that broke down in 2010 over the issue of Jewish settlement
building in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

He hailed the Arab League’s revised Middle-East peace initiative as
“a very big step forward”.

But Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh at the time rejected the
plan, saying outsiders could not decide the fate of the Palestinians.

In the meetings held in early May in Washington, Arab states appeared
to soften their 2002 peace plan, acknowledging that Israelis and
Palestinians may have to swap land in any eventual peace deal.

Addressing hundreds of worshippers in a Gaza mosque, Haniyeh said it
was a concession that other Arabs were not authorized to make.

“The so-called new Arab initiative is rejected by our people, by our
nation and no one can accept it,” Haniyeh said.

“The initiative contains numerous dangers to our people in the occupied
land of 1967, 1948 and to our people in exile.”

“To those who speak of land swaps we say: Palestine is not a property,
it is not for sale, not for a swap and cannot be traded,” Haniyeh said.

Haniyeh said the Palestinian Authority, headed by Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas, was to blame for inspiring the softer Arab position
because it accepted the need for land swaps with Israel.

Press TV: First of all let us talk about the US’ role here, I mean
how impartial has the US been in these talks?

Olson: I mean in these talks as in previous talks, they’ve not been
impartial at all. I mean the fact that Martin Indyk was named by John
Kerry to be the special envoy, I mean he’s part of the Israeli lobby,
he was a former ambassador to Israel, so I mean that alone shows how
un-impartial the whole thing is.

Press TV: And of course with the character of the land, the Palestinian
territories changing drastically over the years, over the span of 60
years you could say, what is there left to talk about then?

Olson: Yes, that’s another problem. The time is not ripe at all for
this, given that there’s apparently 600,000 settlers, approximately,
in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and not only that but
new settlements are built all the time, the Israeli government has
put forth a master plan for a major railroad project in the West Bank.

I mean there are no signs on the ground that Israel has any intention
of giving up a square inch of the West Bank much or less the entire
thing.

Press TV: And of course what is your opinion about the settlements? I
mean they are illegal internationally.

Olson: Of course, yes, I mean it’s very clear. The Geneva Conventions
forbid an occupying power from forcibly transferring civilians on
the occupied territory.

Press TV: Why does not the United States do anything about that if
it claims to be with the international law?

Olson: Yes, I mean the main reason for that is because when it
comes to putting pressure on Israel, it is extremely difficult
in Washington because of the ability of the Israeli lobby to put
pressure on anybody who, sort of, steps out of line on this issue and
the settlements tend to be…, you know, the Israeli government does
not wish to cease expanding settlements and, sort of, the Israeli
lobby responds more to Israel’s needs than the to the United States’
needs and they have a huge network and a lot of ways to influence
people to make decisions that are, in my opinion, not in the US’
interests and this is one of them.

Press TV: And of course finally will this issue ever be solved and how?

Olson: I wish I knew. You know, it seems like kind of the unstoppable
force and an immovable object. You know, the Palestinians are not
going anywhere but Israel doesn’t seem to have any impetus to make
any compromises whatsoever.

of working is the boycott, the investment sanctions initiative that
was requested by the Palestinians in 2005 and it has since grown
considerably.

The most important thing that I’ve seen on that front so far, was very
recent. The European Union has begun to not cooperate with Israel on
certain projects, if they have ties to the settlements and because, you
know, the entire…, you know, Israel is so tied up with the settlement
enterprise now that that opens Israel up to even broader sanctions.

Despite the media reports that the business of Armenian entrepreneur,
Arzni Group owner Gevorg Afandyan is stagnating, Arzni Group continues
its production activities and has reduced its output to a small extent
only. Alik Khachikyan, Chief Financial Officer at Arzni Group, has
told ArmInfo that Arzni Group (Byurakn LLC) keeps on producing mineral
water under the AYG brand, as well as the PAPA CARLO lemonade. The
company’s output has dropped by 5% over year. Khachikyan has not
specified the financial indices of the company.

According to Khachikyan, the company continues exporting its products
to Russia. The factory has recently delivered its mineral water to
Belarus as well.

To note, Arzni Group also includes well-known brands such as
Segafredo, AG Electronics, AG Print, KFC, Vita Spa. Khachikyan has
not commented on the situation with the given brands due to the lack
of information. In 2011 Arzni Group acquired the STAR trade chain,
which was in a difficult financial state, and hoped to give a fresh
impetus to its work, however, according to unspecified data, this
asset was later disposed.

To recall, Gevorg Afandyan is reported to owe a big sum to several
banks. The proceeding on this issue lasted a few months and was over in
May 2013. The court ruled confiscation of the businessman’s property.

A reliable source has told ArmInfo that Arzni Group is still
stagnating. The company has found itself at the verge of bankruptcy
due to incompetent management that led to embezzlement. “Over the last
few months the leadership of the company has been trying to improve
the internal situation, but any attempts led to new embezzlement and
negligence of the constantly changing directors”, the source says. As
a result, the company’s staff has considerably shrunk since early
2013. The employees were discontent with their wages and constant
back pays.

The source also says that Arzni Group has recently planned to acquire
ArmElectromash Plant and to launch its central office in the area of
the plant.

AIR ARMENIA TO LAUNCH PASSENGER FLIGHTS TO RUSSIA IN AUGUST 2013

In August 2013 Air Armenia CJSC will make its first regular
Yerevan-Moscow-Yerevan passenger flight, Air Armenia CEO Arsen
Avetisyan told ArmInfo.

According to him, three weeks ago the General Department of Civil
Aviation of Armenia provided Air Armenia with a one-year license to
make flights to Moscow, Sochi, Samara, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar and
St.Petersburg. Two A-320 planes will operate. The first plane will
arrive in the republic in mid August, and the second one – in late
September. Avetisyan pointed out that the company was founded in 2003
and was engaged in cargo air carriages. “The first cargo flight was
on 18 Aug 2003. Therefore, we want to make our first passenger flight
on 18 Aug 2013”, he said.

He added that both passenger planes have been leased. Investments
in their lease amounted to 3.2 mln USD. If the company succeeds in
passenger flights, it will buy aircrafts and expand the geography
of its flights, specifically, to Europe and Asia. He pointed out
that in mid September 2013 the General Department of Civil Aviation
of Armenia will announce tenders for Armenian air carriers and Air
Armenia will participate in the tender by all means. “If we win the
tender and receive a license for 5 years, we will plan the company’s
development for the long-term outlook”, he said.

At the moment the company has 110 employees. With the launch of the
flights, the number of employees will increase to 135 people, he said.

To note, Air Armenia CJSC was founded in April 2003 by Vahan
Harutyunyan and Ruzanna Tovmasyan. The authorized capital of the
company is $501,000.

Air Armenia will actually become the first national air carrier after
suspension of Armavia’s flights on 1 April 2013.
