Another Armenian Woman Attacked In Turkey

ANOTHER ARMENIAN WOMAN ATTACKED IN TURKEY

Tuesday, August 20th, 2013

Markırıt Camkosoglu

ISTANBUL (The Armenian Weekly)–An 80-year -old Armenian woman was the
victim of a recent assault in Istanbul’s Ferikoy neighborhood on Aug.

17, reported Agos.

The victim was Markırıt Camkosoglu, who lived alone. The assault
happened in her apartment on Savash Street.

Camkosoglu recounted the following to Agos: “On my way home from
the supermarket, I noticed a stranger standing at the entrance of
the building. At first, I was not suspicious. The man was of medium
height, and was dark and ugly. I thought he was one of the neighbors
and was going upstairs. The building I live in is massive, and so it
is impossible to recognize everyone. However, as soon as I opened my
apartment door, the man attacked me. I fell on the floor, and as I
lay there, he started hitting me in the head. I believe he attempted
to murder me. I don’t know his voice–he did not say a single word to
me to hide his identity. After beating me, he stole my purse, which
was on the table and which contained only 70 Turkish liras. Then,
he ran away.”

Camkosoglu added that she had been living in her apartment for 50
years, and this was the first time that such an incident had taken
place.

During the investigation, the neighbors stated that the attacker must
have been familiar with the entrance to the building. Moreover, he
knew that Camkosoglu lived by herself. For these reasons, he had chosen
to attack at a time the building was calmest in terms of foot traffic.

This incident is reminiscent of earlier attacks on old Armenian women
that took place in the Samatia district of Istanbul between December
2012 and January 2013. One of these earlier assaults led to the death
of Maritsa Kucuk.

Police apprehended a suspect, Murat Nazaryan in March 2012. His
trial is ongoing, although Nazaryan claims he has no memory of
assaulting the women, and that his initial confession was extracted
under psychological duress. The lawyers representing Maritsa Kucuk’s
family have demanded the court to launch a broader investigation into
the issue.

YEREVAN, August 20. / ARKA /. Armenia’s education and science minister

in some priority specialties, who will be eligible to free education.

Official US Source: "Blacklist" Of Azerbaijani Authorities Looks Not

OFFICIAL US SOURCE: “BLACKLIST” OF AZERBAIJANI AUTHORITIES LOOKS NOT SERIOUS

18:03 20/08/2013 ” SOCIETY

The “blacklist” made by Azerbaijani authorities, which also includes
35 Americans, looks not serious, an anonymous official source told
the reporter of Turan Azerbaijani news agency in Washington D.C.

The source notes: “The published list is politicized and doesn’t
reflect a long-term strategy, that’s how a number of analytics think
in Washington.”

According to the source, there are people among those 335 names
that have never been to Nagorno-Karabakh. Most interestingly, some
of them, who are included in the “blacklist,” visited the region on
Azerbaijani government funding. For example, 16 students from John
Hopkins University have recently spent 10 days in Baku, Yerevan,
and some of them have visited Karabakh as well.

“We visited Azerbaijan and Armenia to study about Karabakh conflict
and means of its resolution. The trip to Azerbaijan was organized
by the Azerbaijani diplomatic academy, and the visit to Armenia by
Caucasus Institute. The aim of the trip was to familiarize ourselves
with the conflict and think out new ideas, which will help to solve
the problem,” a participant on the “blacklist” Nikolay Vondra told the
reporter of Turan agency. Vondra added that he didn’t visit Karabakh,
but somehow ended up on the list.

Information sources of Turan have revealed that the trip of American
students cost Azerbaijani tax payers more than $50,000.

According to the head of “Azerbaijanis of America for Democracy” NGO
(AZAD) Elmar Shahtahtinskiy, “blacklists” are “not serious.”

Shahtahtinskiy believes that the list is meant for internal propaganda.

“It’s yet another example of how Azerbaijani authorities spend
millions of dollars on issues having nothing in common with problems
of Azerbaijan, and especially the resolution of Karabakh conflict,”
– said Shahtahtinskiy.

Turan reports that according to Armenian sources, tens of
thousands have visited Nagorno-Karabakh in the past few years,
while the “blacklist” of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
consists of only 350 people, some of which have never even been to
Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to the article, the president of United Armenian Fund Harut
Sasunyan wrote in his column in California Courier, “It’s amazing that
none of the Armenian leaders is on the “blacklist,” despite the fact
that they don’t keep their visits in the region secret.” “Perhaps,
Azerbaijani officials consider Karabakh a part of Armenia that is
why they don’t include the names of Armenian citizens?” notes Sasunyan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has published a list
of names, which became personae non gratae for Azerbaijan because
of visiting Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and are denied access to the
country. There are 335 people on the list. Specifically, the given
list includes the member of the parliament of the Southern Wales
state of Australia Gledice Berezhiklyan, Russian State Duma deputy
Oleg Pokholkov, an employee at the Ukrainian magazine “Profil” Varvara
Zhlutenko, reporter of “The Washington Post” in Moscow Will Englund,
Austrian conductor Ernest Hoetzl, Spanish opera singer Monserrat
Cabalye, and others.

Fitch Confirms Armenia’s Ratings At BB, Outlook Stable

FITCH CONFIRMS ARMENIA’S RATINGS AT BB, OUTLOOK STABLE

YEREVAN, August 20. /ARKA/. Fitch Ratings has affirmed Armenia’s
Long-term foreign and local currency Issuer Default Ratings (IDR) at
‘BB-‘, Outlook Stable, according to the agency’s report.

The Country Ceiling has been affirmed at ‘BB’ and the Short-term
rating at ‘B’, Novosti-Armenia reported referring to RIA Novosti.

“Armenia’s rating is supported by a relatively strong macroeconomic
framework and a good inflation track record in comparison with the
peer group of ‘BB’ rated sovereigns”, says to the report.

The consolidated general government deficit fell to 1.4% of GDP in
2012, down from 2.8% of GDP in 2011, outperforming the target for
the second successive year, according to the report.

The government succeeded in meeting its goal of increasing
tax revenues, although under-execution of capital spending
also contributed, by 1.2pp of GDP. The deficit will increase
again in 2014 due to the costs of introducing a pension reform,
estimated at 0.5% of GDP in the first year. General government
debt rose 1.8pp of GDP to 44.1% of GDP in 2012, but Fitch expects
it to stabilise from 2013 onwards. Growth slowed in Q213,

Erna Yuzbashyan To Come Back With Amirkhanyan’s Repertoire

ERNA YUZBASHYAN TO COME BACK WITH AMIRKHANYAN’S REPERTOIRE

11:50, 20 August, 2013

LOS ANGELES, AUGUST 20, ARMENPRESS. Erna Yuzbashyan’s name is
inseparably connected with the best traditions of the Armenian variety
art both in Armenia and beyond its borders. The popular singer,
who has settled in the United States since 1994, is not fond of
being praised, despite the fact that she has passed a way full of
professional success and creative achievements.

Instead, she prefers direct personal intercourse. “Armenpress”
introduces an interview with the prominent Armenian singer dedicated
to a vast variety of issues.

– Erna, what was Your reaction when You received the invitation to
participate in “Music Week in Yerevan” program?

– Director and showman Emil Karat sent me the invitation. He is the
creative Manager of the program. They are introducing the aforesaid
program in association with the Head of “Forpostart” company Zara
Mkheyan. I know Emil for a very long time. He was a student of mine
in the Yerevan State Jazz College. Frankly speaking I am very touched
and I am hopeful that “Music Week in Yerevan” will become a good
tradition. I hope this contact with music will grant the people a
piece of happiness, so to speak.

If not this event, maybe I would not have a chance to perform
Amirkhanyan’s works. Who knows? I want to introduce his songs very
much. I performed Amirkhanyan’s works in various international contests
until 1987.

– So, You’ll introduce new repertoire in comparison with Your previous
concert. What was Your impression from the 2010 concert?

– I had a feeling that something was not expressed, because of the lack
of Amirkhanyan’s works. That was my repertoire. Maybe it was my mistake
that those works were not included in my previous concert. I am very
sorry that I did not oppose to Amirkhanyan’s categorical decision not
to perform his songs. Notwithstanding, generally the impressions were
positive. I am satisfied, I should have done it and I did it. I’ll
introduce some new songs from my last album. Also the audience will
have a chance to listen to Elvina Makaryan’s songs as well.
