“Artsakh welcomes any struggle for self-determination,” Prime Minister
of the Nagrono Karabakh Republic Ara Harutyunyan said in an exclusive
interview with Public Radio of Armenia.

On March 18 the Russian and Crimean leaders signed a reunification
treaty. On the same day a concert was held in Stepanakert dedicated
to the self-determination of the people of Crimea. A day before the
NKR Foreign Ministry had issued a statement, saying it considers
the referendum held on March 16 in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea
as yet another manifestation of realization of the right of peoples
to self-determination. Later on the referendum was welcomed by the
groups and factions of the NKR National Assembly.

Armenia’s reaction to the position of official Stepanakert was
not unequivocal. Different assessments of politicians followed. In
particular, ex-Foreign Minister Alexander Arzumanyan declared that
he saw Russia behind the celebration of Crimea’s self-determination
in Nagorno Karabakh.

“I don’t know how the fact was accepted in Armenia, but Artsakh
welcomes any struggle for self-determination. It’s perhaps difficult
for people in Armenia to understand what self-determination means,
since Armenia has never faced the issue. We have welcomed the fact
that the people of Crimea have decided how they want to live. We have
welcomed the independence of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Kosovo. This
is the democracy, not the massacre in Maidan. Democracy is the
expression of a position through a referendum,” Ara Harutyunyan said.

Shushi Events Need Legal Assessment

SHUSHI EVENTS NEED LEGAL ASSESSMENT

March 23 marked the 94th anniversary of the bloody events in Shushi.

The massacres in the city with a 30 thousand Armenian population
resulted in the death of 7-8 thousand people, about 17 thousand
Armenians left the city. After this the Armenian history of Shushi
was consigned to oblivion for about 70 years.

To mark the anniversary the Shushi History Museum and the “Kachar”
scientific center organized a discussion at the Artsakh State
University. Participants of the conference adopted a statement, which
says that “the massacres organized and perpetrated by the Democratic
Republic of Azerbaijan and the burning of the once flourishing city
were not only the continuation of the Turkish policy of Armenocide,
but were also targeted against humanity and democracy.”

Participants of the discussion – historians, political scientists
and lawyers – referred not only to historic episodes, but also the
ongoing propaganda war and the counter-actions.

The Shushi events need a legal assessment. According to lawyer Avetik
Harutyunyan, these can be described as genocide.

In the statement the participants denounced the events of 94 years ago,
voicing confidence that the condemnation and legal assessment of the
ongoing policy of terrorism and ethnic cleansing are effective tools
to prevent such phenomena in the future.

According to the participants of the discussion, impunity is the
reason of the criminal policy adopted by the Republic of Azerbaijan,
the successor of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan.

Vivid examples of this policy include the massacres and deportation
of 1987-1991, the war unleashed against Artsakh and today’s situation
at the border.

Letter: Remembering Unger Sarkis Zeitlian

LETTER: REMEMBERING UNGER SARKIS ZEITLIAN

By Contributor // March 20, 2014

Dear Editor,

On March 28, 1985 in the midst of the Lebanese civil war, unger Sarkis
Zeitlian was abducted in Beirut, Lebanon, and disappeared from the face
of the earth. His body was never found, and his abductors were neither
identified not prosecuted. This was and still is very disheartening
as the details of his abduction are mired in controversy.

At the time of his abduction, unger Sarkis Zeitlian was a member of
the ARF Bureau.

This was a devastating loss to the Armenian cause, the ARF, and to
his beloved family. Twenty-nine years have passed and yet his memory
lives vividly in my mind and my heart and thousands of others like me,
who had the distinct privilege of being taught by him, disciplined
by him, and mentored and forged by him. He made us who we are today.

In 1954, I was eleven years old and a fourth grade student at the
Kalousdian Armenian School in Cairo when unger Sarkis came to Egypt
and became our history teacher. His influence and the impact he left on
our young minds was immediate and irreversible. He taught us Armenian
history with fervor, but more importantly, he made us feel proud of our
history and of being Armenian. The history classes became the highlight
of our day at school. We were also very happy when he married another
beloved and exceptional teacher at the school, Sona Simonian.

But he was not only our Armenian history teacher. He became an
indefatigable figure and a major influential factor in the ranks of
the ARF Egypt, bringing a high level of energy, new concepts, and new
convictions. He became the editor of the ARF organ Houssaper and his
main focus until 1963–when he moved back to Lebanon–was to have our
minds ingrained with the ideological and moral integrity of the Party.

He was a compassionate teacher, a distinguished political and community
leader and a superb mentor to many of us who are now spread all over
the world.

He will always be missed and never forgotten. May his soul rest
in peace.

Sincerely,

Vart Adjemian

Another conscript, Varazdat Zakaryan, was hospitalized with wounds.

The paper says that the deceased soldier, who was enlisted to the
military in autumn 2012, was the only male child in his family.

Armenia’s Economic Indices May Be Worse This Year Than In 2013- Dail

ARMENIA’S ECONOMIC INDICES MAY BE WORSE THIS YEAR THAN IN 2013- DAILY SAYS

YEREVAN, March 21. / ARKA /. Armenia’s economic activity index in the
first two months of 2014 dropped to 2.4 percent from 8 percent in the
first two months last year, Zhamanak (Time) daily says in its today’s
issue citing the official numbers of the National Statistical Service.

The daily does not expect any significant rise in economic activity
index in the next 2-3 months either.

According to it, some sectors of the Armenian economy saw a change
trend. In particular, the construction industry rose by 1.2 percent
in January and February this year, for the first time since 2008,
but the industrial output slashed by 4.1%. As for agriculture, it
grew by f 4.9 percent.

Electricity production fell by 4.4% because less natural gas arrived
in Armenia from Iran for production of electricity which is shipped
back to Tehran.

According to the newspaper, Armenian exports in the first two months
decreased by 3.2%, and imports fell by 6.7%. As a result, foreign
trade turnover was less 5.8% year-on-year. The newspaper also writes
that in January and February this year the average monthly salary
increased by 6.5 percent to 156,300 drams, however, a 5.1 percent
inflation slashed the real rise to 1.4 percent.

The daily suggests that economic problems in Russia together with
anticipated consequences of sanctions imposed on it by the West are
likely to be felt in May and June.

This means, Armenia’s macroeconomic data for the first months of this
year will be modest , but in the middle of the year, it will also
feel h the consequences of the deteriorating Russian economy that
would affect also Armenia’s key indicators making the 3.5 percent
economic expansion last year seem quite good and desirable. -0-
