SHORTAGE OF LAND LOTS SPURS CONTROVERSY OVER REBURIALS, CREMATION AND PRIVATE CEMETERIES IN ARMENIA

12:14 * 16.09.14

The shortage of land lots for graves appears to be a problem for the
major cities of Armenia.

Speaking to Tert.am, Head of the Urban Development Ministry’s Apartment
Fund Department Samvel Srapyan said difficulties exist especially in
capital Yerevan, the second largest city of Gyumri and the town of
Alaverdi (Lori region).

To provide a partial solution to the problem, the Ministry is now
considering the land allotment option, as well as the possibility of
organizing reburials.

“The law allows for organizing a reburial in the same cemetery 10-15
years after the funeral. We have not simply developed that tradition,
as our population won’t perceive that,” he explained.

Srapyan said he thinks that reburials will offer a long-lasting
solution, mitigating the demand for new land lots. “The idea is not
rejected; it is just misperceived, although it is really a [good]
solution. People have no idea as to how it is possible to bury one
body over the other, so they prefer to take an extra-land,” he noted.

The official said he knows that very often vast land areas are
purchased for just one grave, with many often spending considerable
sums to have statues erected.

He added that the restrictive law, adopted in 2006, is very often
abused and disrespected. Srapyan noted that the law also contains
regulations for private cemeteries (allowing for the use of land
lots of 12×2.5 sq. m. per grave). “But that’s violated too, as people
appear very skillful to do that,” he added.

Srapyan said they are now considering the amendments to the legislation
to establish the state’s authorities in maintaining control over the
exploitation of grave lands.

He added that private cemeteries are in the interest of the state
despite the professional circles’ continuing arguments that the
approach isn’t right.

As for the idea of cremation, Srapyan said it is a widely accepted and
practiced method which does not demand the use of lands at all. “I
cannot say whether it is right in religious terms, but there is a
class of people in the society who are looking forward to having
crematories. That too, is a human right to exercise one’s will
posthumously. The law does permit it,” he noted.

Commenting on the problem, Priest Tovma Andreasyan said the church
admits only the reburials of bodies. According to him, that’s normally
a widely accepted practice for graves that haven’t visited for quite a
long time after the burial. “Considering the history of the mankind,
I don’t think there is any territory today, which didn’t have anyone
buried [beneath] before. So a burial on a buried body is possible,”
he added.

Instead, the church is strongly against the idea of cremation. “There
is an opinion that the Christ’s doomsday has to incorporate his soul
and body,” Andreasyan said, adding that the idea can be acceptable
only for Protestants.

But the priest added that exceptions can be considered whenever there
are difficulties in flying a dead person from a distant country for
burial. “But considering the peace of the deceased’s soul, we are
against widespread cremations. There are only exceptional cases when
we accept that,” he said.

Interview: Andrea Martin On Her New Book ‘LADY PARTS’

Interview: Andrea Martin On Her New Book ‘LADY PARTS’

Fans of Andrea Martin should know that she’s written a wonderful,
moving, incredibly funny, and honest series of essays that have been
published by Harper Collins into a book titled ‘Lady Parts.’

Ms. Martin immediately sets the tone of her book in the introduction,
where she confesses the greatest deceit that she has done unto her
fans. “I need to set the record straight. I am not Canadian. I am
American.” While Ms. Martin has lived in and spent much of her career
in Toronto, she was in fact born in Maine and is of Armenian descent.
If you decide to not return her book (which she suggests in the
introduction) and can live with the fact this Ms. Martin is not
Canadian, you’re in for a real treat.

The book is incredibly well written and each essay is on point – it
never drags. Just like her comedic timing comes across on screen – it
shines through the written word. I found myself audibly laughing in
moments, and crying along with Ms. Martin in others.

Fans of SCTV will also be pleased to hear an entire chapter of the
novel is devoted to the history of what has arguably become one of the
few iconic, original Canadian television series. Among other treasures
found in ‘Lady Parts’ are sections written by Ms. Martin’s alter ego
Edith Prickley, Ms. Martin’s first headshots (circa 1970), and a
hilarious chapter titled “Some things I think about but don’t say out
loud.”

I had the opportunity to ask Ms. Martin a few questions about her book.

Alan: What inspired you to actually want to sit down and write down
this autobiographical series of essays?

Andrea: Harper Collins Canada asked if I would be interested in
writing some humorous essays, not a memoir, and I was so elated that I
wasn’t being asked to remember the minutia of my life, and I said yes!

Alan: You mention having difficulty sitting down and writing many
times in the book. Was it very difficult for you to come up with the
essays?

Andrea: It wasn’t difficult writing, once I actually sat down. It was
the discipline of putting pen to paper that was the challenge. All my
writer friends told me the same thing: JUST WRITE. That’s the secret
of writing a book.

Alan: How long did writing the entire book take?

Andrea: Probably three years from beginning to end. In that time, I
did three Broadway shows, two TV pilots, a movie of the week, a TV
series, two movies, and performed my own one person show around the
country and on a cruise ship to Europe. I had many excuses not to
write and I used them!

Alan: Which essays were the easiest to write?

Andrea: I wouldn’t say anything was easy. I was never satisfied, and
went back and rewrote till the essays sounded true.

Alan: Which essay was the hardest to write?

Andrea: The most difficult was the essay about my mom.

Alan: In the novel you devote an entire chapter explaining how you
regularly fly to Atlanta to have your hair done because this is where
your hairdresser lives. How do you think people in your life and your
fans will react knowing you fly to Atlanta to have your hair done?

Andrea: That’s out of my control. I try not to think who I pleased and
who I didn’t please. Everyone has a opinion and everyone is happy to
express their opinions, everywhere! I wrote the book as honestly as I
could. Now it’s out there and out of my hands. Of course, I hope
people like it and find it honest and entertaining.

Alan: You write in your book that after you finished your last
performance of Pippin you went straight to Magnolia Bakery (and
started eating tons of carbohydrates.) Was it hard getting back into
Pippin after being away for so long?

Andrea: Yes, It was challenging, but a welcome challenge. It feels
better to be fit.

Alan: In the novel you also describe your relationship with your
astrologer, Althea – who’s predictions are always correct. Does she
predict ‘Lady Parts’ is going to be a bestseller?

Andrea: I haven’t been back to her in awhile. Thank you for reminding
me to make an appointment!

Alan: Would you consider writing another book in the future?

Andrea: Possibly. I need some more of my life to unfold. My “third
chapter” is just beginning.

Alan: Do you have any plans for after your run in Pippin in LA?

Andrea: I will continue to promote my book, and then we will be in
production for the My Big Fat Greek Wedding sequel in the new year.

Andrea Martin’s ‘Lady Parts’ will be available in print nationwide on
September 23, 2014. She is currently appearing in PIPPIN on Broadway,
and will also reprise her role of “Berthe” in the Los Angeles
engagement of the National Tour.

Assyrian Orthodox Patriarch Delivers Keynote Speech At in Defense of
Christians Summit

Posted 2014-09-13 06:06 GMT

Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II.Washington (AINA) —
Yesterday, on the third day of the In Defense of Christians summit,
Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II, Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch,
delivered a keynote address on the persecution of Christians in Iraq
and Syria. The title of the speech was Do Muslims need Christians in
the Middle East?

The Patriarch began by saying “Muslims were welcomed to many major
cities in what is today known as Syria, Lebanon and Iraq by
Christians…Christians had established the infrastructure of the new
[Islamic] state.”

The Patriarch said:

Many of the Christians were forced to convert as a result of the
imposition of heavy jizya, poll tax, on them. They often endured many
periods of persecution, especially during the Mongol and Ottoman
times. The Genocide of Armenians and Syriac speaking Christians
unleashed during World War One resulted in the extermination of
millions of Christians. In fact, we all are commemorating this tragic
event throughout next year as the hundredth anniversary of this
atrocity.

I believe that Muslims need Christians to challenge themselves to live
in a pluralistic and multi-religious society where they can affirm
their identity without being afraid of the other. Muslims ought to be
able to embrace the values of tolerance and acceptance of the other as
a sign of self confidence to prove that Islam as a religion can
coexist with other religions without the need to absorb others or the
fear that it may be absorbed by others. Living in isolation will keep
Muslims ignorant of the other and ignorance is the mother of all fear.

It’s high time for Muslim scholars and religious leader to prove to
the world that these groups do not represent true Muslim teachings.

Muslims need Christians to fight together extremism. Muslims need
Christians to fight together secularism, a common enemy of all
believers from all religions. Muslims need Christians to fight
together commercialism — the human being has become a commodity being
sold. We have to come together to restore back the dignity of the
human being as the image of God on earth.

I conclude by calling upon the international community to help us
Christians stay in our homelands, in the lands that are forefathers
for two millennia witnessed for Christ and for many millennia lives as
the people, indigenous people of that land.

By calling upon them [international community] to help us stay in our
homeland we also want them to work hard to make sure that these
Christians should be protected, should be provided with dignity, with
honor, and should not be subject to attacks such as we are seeing
today.
