Take a wild ride on the Orient Express

By MARK SCHREIBER

THE OTTOMAN CAGE by Barbara Nadel. New York: Thomas
Dunne Books, 2005, 312 pp., $ 23.95 (cloth).
DRAGON FIRE by William S. Cohen. New York: Tom Doherty
Associates, 2006, 383 pp., $ 24.95 (cloth).
"One of the most frequently asked questions that I get
as a British author," Barbara Nadel tells the e-zine
Shots ( ), "is ‘why do you set your
crime series in Istanbul?’ I generally finish my now
familiar diatribe with . . . ‘Istanbul has a lot of
places in which to hide bodies.’ "

Since her release of "Belshazzar’s Daughter" in 1999,
Nadel has continued to prove her point in an ongoing
series of police procedural novels set in Istanbul
featuring inspector Cetin Ikmen. The work under review
is for the U.S. edition, initially released in Britain
under the title "A Chemical Prison."

Ikmen, Nadel’s series character, is a tough Turkish
cop, a chain smoker and plodding investigator out of
the Simenon-Maigret mold, so old-fashioned he still
hasn’t figured out how to use his cell phone. From his
personal life we see he’s also something of a male
chauvinist. Problems at home, including a senile
father who needs to be institutionalized, are taking a
toll on his subservient wife.

In "The Ottoman Cage," police find themselves
confounded by the crime scene. Located in a house next
to Topkapi palace, it bears a striking resemblance to
what is known as a Kafes apartment, where the old
Ottomans used to keep rivals confined in a sort of
urban exile. The victim, a young man, had been
strangled, and the atrophied condition of his body
suggests he has been prisoner in the room for a
considerable duration, kept in a sedated state by
injections of a synthetic opiate that only doctors can
easily obtain, and thereby casting suspicion on the
city’s close-knit community of well-to-do Armenian
physicians.

Part of book’s appeal is in how well Nadel presents
Turkey’s social classes and ethnic diversity, with a
Jewish police detective, Armenian physicians and
people smuggled into the country from parts of the
former Soviet Union. A side plot involves an
on-the-job relationship: Sgt. Farsakoglu, an
attractive, single policewoman, has the hots for
Suleyman, her unhappily married male colleague.

The London-born Nadel, who is intimately familiar with
Turkey, also has a background in counseling sexually
abused teenagers and teaching psychology, which
doubtless has influenced her various insights into the
sexual mores of a predominantly Muslim country that
are touched upon in this book.

Those interested in reading other mysteries set in
Turkey might enjoy contrasting Nadel’s series with the
translated works of Turkish mystery author Orhan
Pamuk, whose novel "My Name Is Red," set in
16th-century Istanbul, was reviewed here last March.

Title fatigue
With a name like "Dragon Fire," it’s got to be a
potboiler involving China, right? Fortunately, this
thriller by William S. Cohen, who was U.S. Secretary
of Defense from 1997 to 2001, turned out to be more
original than its cliched title.

The protagonist is the U.S. defense secretary — not
Donald Rumsfeld but Michael Patrick Santini, a former
senator who spent several years as a prisoner of war
in the Hanoi Hilton and who accepted the Cabinet
appointment after his predecessor died mysteriously of
anthrax.

Threats from Middle Eastern terrorists barely figure
in this work. Instead, poor America is in danger of
being blindsided by a host of other foreign intrigues,
beginning with a militant faction in China that is
plotting to hamstring the civilian party leadership so
it can pounce on Taiwan.

First, however, it needs to keep the U.S. Navy out of
the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese conspirators outsource
their skulduggery to someone with money and influence:
a billionaire Russian oligarch who hopes to forge an
alliance with Germany, and who will sell drugs,
high-tech weaponry or assassination services to all
comers, if the price is right. To add to the intrigue,
Elena, a beautiful and mysterious Israeli assassin,
sashays into the picture.

Aside from having a John McCain clone as his main
protagonist, Cohen does not succumb to the temptation
of caricaturing specific individuals in the Bush
administration. But that does not mean he doesn’t have
a serious message, which seems to be that Americans
seem bent on being their own worst enemies. The heroic
Santini, unable to dissuade the president from the
aggressive strategies pushed by saber-rattling
conservatives, is driven out of desperation to disobey
his boss’s orders and put his country first.

This cliffhanger is convincingly spun as only a
Washington insider of Cohen’s caliber can do, although
its climax, a Dodge City shootout at Tiananmen Square,
seems a bit contrived. I was pleased to see Chinese
names in the story rendered more or less correctly
using hanyu pinyin spellings — usually a bete noir
for American proofreaders — although a "Hsu" (using
the old Wade-Giles romanization) was allowed to slip
in. It should have been "Xu." But as I like to say, if
the Hsu fits, wear it.

step he protested against the policy of the American administration
that doesn’t want to characterize the massacre of 1,5 million of
Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in early 20th century as a genocide.

According to the information, unless Menendez lifts his ban, the
candidacy of Richard Hoagland for ambassador position will not be
discussed at the US Senate.

Aram Simonyan is aware that corruption is part of Yerevan State
University. "So many students speak about it. How could it be that
they were all libelers?

There is no fire without smoke," he told a press conference
today. Simonyan says he is not sure he can eliminate corruption from
the university but thinks about ways to reduce it. Simonyan connects
hopes with students, parents and YSU management board chairman Serzh
Sargsyan. He did not answer what concrete steps he has taken during
his tenure to fight corruption saying the university was on vacation
during summer.

Simonyan’s argument is very weak since summer is the most active
period for corruption when student take their exams.

YSU will launch anonymous student polls as part of fight against
corruption. Simonyan says the deans do not want to lose their face
in front of department heads accusing them in corruption. However,
Simonyan says he is going to do that personally. "I am not afraid to
lose my face. Nor am I afraid of swearings.

If I am elected to this post, I must do everything to deserve it,"
A. Simonyan promised.

Armenian No-sugar Added Products to be Presented to Canadian Market

Armenian No-sugar Added Products to be Presented to Canadian Market

Newswire Today (press release), UK
Sept 7 2006

NewswireToday – /newswire/ – Toronto, ON, Canada, 09/07/2006 – For
the first time natural no sugar added jams and no sugar added juices
made by indigenous Armenian recipes will be presented in Canadian
market by The Artisan Food Inc. in fall of 2006.

The Artisan Food Inc. has been started by young Armenian entrepreneurs,
Lilit Hakobyan and Samvel Shahbazyan, seeking to reinvent the
indigenous recipes of homemade fruits and vegetables and deliver it to
people searching for healthy foods. The philosophy of the company is
to introduce specialty healthy, natural food products from Armenia,
those that are really a blend of the ancient and the modern, made in
the best of artisan traditions, using local ingredients combined with
modern technology and packaging.

The specialty products delivered by The Artisan Food Inc. are from
Armenia, an ancient land with rich traditions. Armenia’s unique
alpine climate with its varied micro-climates, soil zones (1800
meters, about 5900 feet above sea level) and 230-days sunshine of
per year produces a wide variety of natural fruits and vegetables
with a luscious taste that is special.

Fruit growing tradition: The fruits used for The Artisan Food Inc.

products are grown in the best of artisan traditions on family owned
farms. Armenian farmers grow fruits and vegetables naturally without
widely using chemicals. Everybody in the family participates in growing
and harvesting of fruits. The family celebrates the beginning of the
fruit growing season and the harvest. Right after harvest the grandmas
preserve fresh fruits and vegetables for the winter. Each family uses
its own recipe that was from their elders. It is traditional to taste
the preserves of the host when you are a guest and to compare and
appreciate the taste. Our Company is about the artisans’ labor of
love in growing natural fruits and making healthy delicious products.

Renascence of natural taste: After three years of hard work Armenian
no sugar added jams and natural no sugar added fruit juices have been
developed to deliver homemade flavor and natural taste of fruits to
the healthy food consumers.

"My Great-great-grandmother, Grand-ma Haykandukht (she lived to
98 years old) made jams and preserves; using her traditions and
flavors The Artisan Food Inc. is now introducing these products to
the public. I remember the smells and rich colors of her apricot jams.

The natural taste of homemade preserves fills me with familial warmth
to this day. Grand-ma Haykandukht, used to tell stories of how she
learned to make her sugar-free preserves from her own grandmother.

Today, after three years of hard work, we have re-created
her recipes. You can now enjoy the same taste that my
Great-great-grandmother first encountered in her childhood." – Lilit

A specialty line of products introduced by The Artisan Food Inc.

includes no sugar added and lower in sugar jams, and specialty fruit
preserves. Jams and preserves are produced in small batches using fresh
sun-ripened produce grown locally. The production of 0.5 kg specialty
preserve, from orchard to jar, requires 7 hours of hand made work.

The Artisan Food Inc.’s no sugar added juices of the pomegranate,
apricot, peach, and blackcurrant are exclusively fruit juice produced
by cold squeezing technology. All juices are 100% natural with
no added sugar, no preservatives, no artificial flavorings and no
coloring. Juices are in glass bottles to retain all the freshness
and goodness of local fresh ingredients.

Both product lines are made of indigenous recipes, are 100% natural
and low in calories. They are for health food markets, with no added
preservatives, additives, artificial flavorings and colorings. Each
fruit is processed individually, by hand. Only the finest fruits are
selected for The Artisan Food Inc. products.

Social aspect: This undertaking has a social concern. We believe
that as more quality products are developed locally for International
markets more people will be employed. We also believe that our approach
to work, knowledge of International trends and marketing promotion
skills will give us a foundation for supporting this idea.

The production of only one line of The Artisan Food Inc. products
employs more than 150 people.

ANCA to Seek to Block Hoagland’s Nomination

ANCA to Seek to Block Hoagland’s Nomination Approval by Senate

PanARMENIAN.Net
08.09.2006 13:22 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Following more than two months of delays,
and amid growing controversy and bipartisan opposition to his
nomination, Richard Hoagland moved a step closer today to winning
Senate confirmation to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to Armenia,
reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

"The ANCA remains firmly opposed to the Hoagland nomination, and
will continue to seek to block his confirmation until he publicly
states that he does not question the Armenian Genocide, and the
State Department explains both its firing of the current Ambassador
as well as the role of the Turkish government in this controversy,"
said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. "We are grateful for
the support of Senators Boxer, Coleman, Dodd, Kerry, and Sarbanes,
and look forward to working with them, and others, to prevent the
Administration from making a mistake that would hinder our ability to
represent U.S. interests and advance American values in Armenia and
the surrounding region, as well as undermining our moral standing on
genocide prevention worldwide."

On two previous occasions, June 28th and again on August 1st,
the panel had delayed its consideration of Ambassador-Designate
Hoagland’s nomination.
