arrive alors qu’ils plaisantaient.

Tu

L’incident n’a

Azerbaijan has won this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Germany,
which means next year’s songfest will be hosted in Baku.

ldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal of Ell/Nikki were voted winners, after
scoring 221 points with their love song, Running Scared.

Italy’s Raphael Gualazzi took second place, followed by Eric Saade
from Sweden. Newly reformed band Blue notched up 100 points, whilst
Ireland’s entry, X Factor twins Jedward, finished eighth.

Viewers at home in all 43 competing nations voted for their favourite
song by phone or text message, which accounted for half of each
country’s vote. The other 50% was determined by five-member expert
juries in each participating country.

Two rounds of semi-finals held earlier in the week whittled the
competitors down to 25 finalists. The event attracted 35,000 to the
Fortuna Dusseldorf Arena, BBC reported.

Armenia’s Emmy was knocked out of Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in the
May 10 seminal, although her performance of Boom Boom song was met
warmly by the audience at Arena stadium in Düsseldorf, Germany.

According to earlier reports, some fans of Eurovision 2011 in Armenia
disagreed with the selection of song Boom-Boom performed by Armenian
singer Emmy at the song contest. As they noted, the selection was
illogical. According to the results of SMS voting posted on the web,
the song AYO was the one to be given priority.

Hrant Dink Park Opens in Mersin

Hrant Dink Park Opens in Mersin

Posted on May 14, 2011 by Editor

Rakel Dink and others at the opening of the Hrant Dink Park
MERSIN, Turkey (Firant news agency) – BDP’s Mersin Akdeniz
Municipality has named a park and built a monument, both in honor of
Hrant Dink. Dink, chief editor of the bilingual newspaper Agos, was
murdered on January 19, 2007.
Hundreds of Turks, Kurds, Arabs, Armenians, Christians and Alevis came
together in Mersin for the opening of Hrant Dink Park and monument
which were made by the Akdeniz Municipality.

Following a dance performance by primary school students, the opening
ceremony was made with the participation of prominent figures, such as
Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block’s Mersin Independent Candidate
Ertugrul Kürkcü; Dink’s wife, Rakel, and daughter, Delal Dink; BDP
Provincial Chair Cihan Yilmaz; Akdeniz Municipality Mayor M. Fazil
Türk; Agos Editor Rober Koptas; Armenian writer Vartak Estukyan;
representatives of the Catholic and Orthodox churches in Mersin;
journalists Ali Bayramoglu and Celal Baslangic and several other
artists and poets.

Making the opening speech of the ceremony, which drew much interest
from the public and media, Türk started off by expressing his pleasure
of giving one of the most honorable and meaningful services during his
presidency. Türk said: `We are giving this park the name of Hrant who
was murdered with an unacceptable malicious attack. We will give a
fight for the values peace, democracy and equality that he died for.
We will not be afraid of those different us and we will keep take the
differences as our richness. Everybody is equal in this country and
deserves equal treatment. I once more condemn the dark hands that
shadow this brotherhood. Dark focuses will not be able to prevent the
breeding ground of the seeds of peace and freedom in our country.
Names like Hrant Dink are the cornerstones on this way. We bow
respectfully before the memory of our peace dove. We will not forget
the name Hrant Dink.’

Emphasizing that Dink is a companion who sacrificed his life for the
peoples’ liberty and for the great action of Deniz Gezmis and his
companions, Kürkcü said: `While entrusting himself to the conservation
of the Turkish people, Hrant wanted to believe in something that was
yet not proved. We, however, saw that this vessel head was not that
much protective. The peoples cannot exist alone. They lapse into a
political statement. And, unfortunately, the state, our political
statement, is not on very good terms with its people, other peoples,
families and religions. The murder of Hrant Dink is bitter realization
of this bitter truth. We now owe an apology to the Armenian people and
to our brother Hrant Dink. And what a bitter fate is it that this
apology is paid by a Kurdish local official, not by a dominant element
of the state. In other words, the Kurdish people, on behalf of
Turkey’s peoples, have begun to apologize for the cruelty toward the
Armenian people. We need to take this as an example. Turkey cannot put
the blame of all happenings on minorities, others and the expelled.
Turkey needs to face with its truth and its history.’

Kürkcü who called referred to Dink as `our companion,’ was followed by
Dink’s widow, who emphasized that this name recalls of cruelty created
by discrimination, racism and fascism and said: `My husband gave a
fight for truths along his life. He tried to address the unfairness
suffered by all peoples but he was responded with death. But the only
thing to console us is that his thoughts have expanded and born new
people thinking like him. And I can see this picture here today. This
idea is just a point to face the past. Our history is full of lots of
pains.’

The speeches were followed by concerts from the MKM (Mesopotamian
Culture Center) group and Kardes Türküler who showed their support
through their songs about freedom, equality and peace. The program
ended with the opening of the Hrant Dink Park and monument.

Azeri Forces Kill Armenian Civilian Ahead of International Mediators’ Visit

BYLINE: Lilit Gevorgyan

The Armenian Foreign Ministry and the Defence Ministry of the
self-declared republic of Nagorno-Karabakh concurrently issued
statements on 12 May confirming that the Azerbaijani military shot and
killed an ethnic Armenian civilian on 11 May. Arayik Balasanyan was
shot by an Azerbaijani sniper as he was driving his tractor close the
border between the breakaway region and Azerbaijan proper, and died
from his head wounds. The reports of the killing coincided with the
four-day visit to South Caucasus =of the President of the Organization
for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly
Petros Efthymiou. The OSCE Minsk group led by France, Russia and the
United States is dedicated to finding a peaceful resolution to the
23-year conflict that at its height during 1988-1994 claimed 30,000
lives on both sides. The Armenian Foreign Ministry condemned
Azerbaijan for destabilising the already precarious peace in the
region, adding that this hampers the international mediators’ efforts
to find peace. Efthymiou is due to arrive in Azerbaijan today (13 May)
as part of his regional tour, and will spend a longer time in
Azerbaijan in an effort to activate the stalling peace process.

Significance:The shooting follows the recent escalation along the Line
of Contact between the breakaway region and Azerbaijan proper. Thus on
30 April Reuters reported that within 48 hours three Armenian soldiers
had been killed by an Azerbaijani sniper. The destabilisation is not a
mere coincidence with the international mediator’s visit to the
region. Azerbaijan has long been frustrated with the OSCE Minsk Group
and wants to move the issue to another forum, an idea opposed by
France, Russia and the US as well as Armenia and the self-declared
republic. The oil- and gas-rich country that suffered a military
defeat at the hands of Armenian separatist forces back in 1994 has
since toughened its stance in the peace talks. Azerbaijan is
determined to restore its territorial integrity at all costs and has
been openly threatening to launch a new war. This is a dangerous and
costly way of resolving the conflict but the South Caucasus’ major
energy exporter can afford the military option, at least financially.
Politically, however Azerbaijan’s hard-line stance and reluctance to
give at least minimal guarantees against the physical destruction of
the breakaway region’s ethnic Armenian population is not winning
support for the Azerbaijani government in the international community.
Nonetheless, this position is well received domestically, something
that the Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev is likely to use in the
future at the expense of destabilising the situation in the region.
Meanwhile the OSCE calls to withdraw snipers are not likely to be
heeded; indeed, Azerbaijan has recently launched a sniper training
course for young people. Against this background the Armenian forces
are likely to retaliate and the situation along the Line of Contact is
set to deteriorate in the coming months.
