KIRO MANOYAN SAYS POSSIBILITY OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RECOGNITION INCREASES IN KNESSET

ARMENPRESS
MAY 20, 2011
YEREVAN

The possibility of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide increases
in the Israeli Knesset, according to Kiro Manoyan, head of the ARF
Armenian Cause and Political Affairs Office. Today in an interview
with Armenpress he commented on the Knesset Education and Culture
Committee’s claim to discuss the issue of the Armenian Genocide at
the parliament.

The issue was presented to the committee by Meretz left-wing party,
which was supported by Likud party, the leader of which is Prime
Minister Netanyahu.

Kiro Manoyan said he hopes that after such a decision the issue of
the Armenian Genocide recognition will get a positive settlement,
as “the Knesset’s coalition parties were for the issue and confirmed
that it is time for the recognition of the Genocide”.

Kiro Manoyan says the number of the Israeli society representatives,
who are for the recognition, increases and this is mainly connected
with the fact that Israel’s relations with Turkey are not on a
good state.

Address of Artsakh Republic President Bako Sahakyan to participants
of the “Legal, political and historical bases of the NKR’s formation”
international conference

“Respected participants of the conference,

I welcome all of you on the Artsakh soil and congratulate on the
beginning of the “Legal, political and historical bases of the NKR
formation” international conference.

Holding such representative events in our republic has become
a tradition, which is welcomed and shows continuous interest of
different countries and highly influential scientific-analytical
centers towards Artsakh.

The fact that this conference has been organized by the state
commission on organizing and coordinating celebrations dedicated
to the 20th anniversary of the NKR’s formation and Artsakh’s
Alma Mater demonstrates the interest of our authorities and the
scientific-educational sector in establishing constant ties with
corresponding Armenian and foreign institutions dealing with the
Karabakh issue.

The topics to be discussed during the conference have both scientific
and political significance encompassing different issues related to the
Artsakh statehood, Karabagh conflict settlement and processes taking
place on the regional and global arenas. Looking to the problems
from this viewpoint will enable to have a more profound view of the
situation and predict possible developments more precisely.

I am sure that the conference will carry out its mission successfully
and will further strengthen and widen cooperation between political
and analytical circles.”

ISTANBUL, May 19 (Reuters) – An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0
shook northwest Turkey on Thursday evening, causing some damage,
and one person died jumping from a building as the quake struck,
the local governor said.

The epicentre of the quake was 50 miles (80 km) west-southwest of
the town of Kutahya, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The tremor also
shook buildings further north in Turkey's largest city Istanbul.

“A citizen panicked and died after jumping from the window,” Kutahya
Governor Kenan Ciftci told broadcaster NTV.

An empty university building collapsed in the quake, which also
shattered windows in some buildings, state-run Anatolian news agency
reported.

Turkey's Kandilli earthquake observatory said the quake, which
struck at 11:15 pm (2015 GMT), had a magnitude of 5.9 and that its
epicentre was the district of Simav in Kutahya province. There was
a series of aftershocks.

Residents of Kutahya waited nervously in the town's streets
after the quake, television pictures showed. Ambulances were sent
out in the affected area as a precaution.

Major geological faultines cross Turkey and small earthquakes are
a near daily occurrence. Two large quakes in 1999 killed more than
20,000 people in northwest Turkey. (Writing by Daren Butler; Editing

ALTERNATE FM XENOGIANNAKOPOULOU ADDRESSES PARLIAMENT ON PONTIAN GENOCIDE DAY (19 MAY 2011)

Athens , 19 May 2011

Alternate Foreign Minister Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou stressed
the following in Parliament in reply to a question from Popular
Orthodox Rally MP Alexandros Chrysanthopoulos on Pontian Genocide
Remembrance Day:

“Today, 19 May, we honour, with respect and deep emotion, the memory
of the victims of the genocide of Black Sea Hellenism. As in other
years, we fulfil a moral, historical and national duty regarding
this genocide, which, from 1916 to 1923, led to the extermination
of over 353,000 officially registered Greeks of the Black Sea. The
Hellenic Parliament, under Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, decided
unanimously on 24 February 1994 to officially recognized 19 May as a
day of national remembrance for the victims of the genocide of Black
Sea Greeks, with the Greek state and global Hellenism honouring them
and pointing up this historical truth. Black Sea Hellenism – despite
the great tragedy it suffered, despite the trials it underwent as
refugees and the dramatic memories, whether here in Greece or abroad
– has been and is a creative force for development and progress,
concurrently keeping alive its traditions and proud history.

Historical memory is critical to our national consciousness,
self-knowledge and the education of the younger generation here in our
homeland. Our country, without any fear syndrome, is systematically
pursuing the recognition and promotion of historical truth. The
building of relations based on the principles of peace, international
law and good neighbourliness has always been a main point of reference
in the shaping of our foreign policy. This is feasible only if
historical truth prevails, along with the maintaining of historical
awareness of the major events and turning points in our history.

Within this framework, I want to assure you that the government is
not passing up on any political or diplomatic option. It is developing
initiatives and supporting anything that points up historical truth.

As you also referred to the European Parliament, I want to relate
to you a personal experience of mine: During my tenure as an MEP,
the Greek MEPs of all the parties fought together to have the Pontian
and Armenian genocides set down in the resolutions of the European
Parliament.”

BAKU: Political Analyst: It Is Unacceptable That Iran Would Abuse Wa

POLITICAL ANALYST: IT IS UNACCEPTABLE THAT IRAN WOULD ABUSE WARM ATTITUDE WITH WHICH AZERBAIJANI LEADERSHIP APPROACHES RELIGION AND NEIGHBORS

Today.Az

19 May 2011 [20:56]

It is unacceptable that Iran would abuse the warm attitude with which
the Azerbaijani leadership approaches the religion and neighbors,
director of the Center for Political Innovation and Technology Mubariz
Ahmedoglu said in an interview with Milli.az.

“Most part of Iran’s attitude towards independent Azerbaijan was
negative. But the negative backdrop of the Islamic Republic towards
Azerbaijan declined thanks to some politicians and diplomats in Iran.

The Azerbaijani leadership, except during the rule of the Popular
Front, has always had warm attitude towards Iran. Ilham Aliyev can be
considered the president, who was elected in independent Azerbaijan
for the longest term. During Ilham Aliyev’s presidency, always there
has been sincerity with respect to Iran. If the current government of
Azerbaijan would have some malice towards Iran, then the government,
which is engaged in it, would prepare and conduct work to ensure
security measures corresponding to that intent,” said Ahmedoglu.

He said the greatest guarantor of security of Azerbaijan is the well
thought-out and independent policy pursued by the leadership.

“Dynamics in Iran regarding the events associated with Azerbaijan are
absolutely opposite. Iran’s old position on Nagorno-Karabakh issue
has been completely forgotten over the recent period. There is no
difference between the current position of Iran and the position of
the Western world. In addition to Nagorno-Karabakh, Iran’s dynamics
of anti-Azerbaijani direction has strengthened.

Iran, becoming friend with weak Azerbaijan, brought onto the agenda
the religious ceremonies as a pressure against strong Azerbaijan.

At least 30 percent of Iranian women do not follow the rules of hijab.

Also in the Koran there are some ceremonies, which are not implemented
by any Muslim state today. Iran, either directly or indirectly,
incites Azerbaijan’s neighbors against it,” said Ahmedoglu.

According to the analyst, the Georgian issue also attracts attention.

The more the Georgian-Iranian relations improve, the more Georgia
worsens relations with Azerbaijan and improves with Armenia. It is
not accidental that the anti-Azerbaijani issue began in Georgia upon
religious grounds.

In recent years, the countries with which Iran has intensified the
relationship include the UAE as well. The dynamics of intensification
of relations between Iran and the UAE have not decreased by the fact
that the UAE, with Saudi Arabia, sent troops to Bahrain. In recent
years, most delegations to Armenia come exactly from the UAE. Is it
accidental?!,” Ahmedoglu said.

He said Lebanon is fully controlled by Iran. All necessary Armenian
programs, including a program to settle people to Nagorno-Karabakh,
are funded by Lebanon.

“Over the past year, Lebanon only increased the amount of funds for
projects related to Nagorno-Karabakh. Maybe somebody thinks it’s
accidental, but we do not think so. In general, we see a regularity
in all that happen. Somehow Iran participates in all that happen,
and all that happen takes anti-Azerbaijani character.

Of course, there are cases under the category of random examples in
the Iranian-Armenian relations.

For example, the first foreign official, with whom the current foreign
minister of Iran met after receiving confirmation of the relevant
parliamentary committee, was energy minister of Armenia A.Movsesian.

Another example is that the Iranian foreign minister is now on visit
to Kuwait. And tomorrow the Armenian minister of diaspora H.Hakobyan
begins visiting Kuwait. Visibly it is an attempt of Kuwait to normalize
relations with Armenia via Iran.

But this can be considered accidental,” said the political analyst. He
stressed for all this period, the Azerbaijani leadership absolutely
has not changed its policy of restraint with respect to Iran.

“In addition, the policy of the Azerbaijan Republic with respect to
religion is a policy built upon love.

Because of its restraint, the country’s leadership does not consider
it necessary to openly demonstrate its love for religion. The more
a country develops, the more its citizens become stronger. But the
policy pursued by neighboring Iran had reached intolerable lines. In
any case, it’s a question when Iran needs to think about how to change
its balanced policy.
