Reports on Russia’s ban on import of Armenian ag products untrue

Reports on Russia’s ban on import of Armenian agricultural products untrue

June 3, 2011 – 20:01 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Russia has not imposed a ban on import of
agricultural products from Armenia, according to the RA Ministry of
Agriculture.

The reports that allegedly Russia has imposed a ban on import of
agricultural products from Armenia are untrue, the press service of
the Armenian Ministry of Culture told PanARMENIAN.Net

Armenia continues exporting vegetables and fruits to the Russian
market, the Ministry said.

Earlier some Armenian media outlets reported that Russia has imposed a
ban on Armenian products along with its ban on import of agricultural
products from Europe.

Apparently, Baku has not conceived essence of Deauville statement

Apparently, Baku has not conceived essence of Deauville statement on Karabakh

June 3, 2011 – 20:15 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Azerbaijan cannot stop and continues rattling the
saboteur even against the background of the direct demand voiced in
Deauville on soonest and only peace resolution of the Karabakh
conflict. It appears that to calm down itself, Azerbaijan, represented
by Spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Defense Army Eldar Sabiroglu,
stated that its army `is the strongest one in South Caucasus and is
ready to fulfill any military instruction.’

It remains a secret for everyone, including international experts, on
which facts the statement is based. Early in 2011, a number of
assessments for fighting capacity of South Caucasus armed forces have
been provided by international experts as well as foreign media.
According to them, quantitative advantage is the only benefit the
Azeri army possesses. International Crisis Group noted that while
Azerbaijan has an obvious advantage in military spending, a variety of
other factors could give Armenia an edge. Morale and combat readiness
in Armenia’s army is also generally considered to be higher than in
Azerbaijan’s, which suffers from past defeats, extensive corruption
and a rigid chain of command. `Despite small territory and population,
Armenia’s army is considered to be the most professional, efficient
and competent in the region,’ an article published in Turkish
newspaper said.

The veiled and open threats to launch a war against Karabakh are
specifically absurd, taking into consideration the recent
developments, when the three superpowers directly involved in the
Karabakh conflict settlement stated that its resolution can no longer
be delayed, strongly urging the leaders of the sides to prepare their
populations for peace, not war.

Most likely, Azerbaijan has not understood the message of Russia,
France and the U.S. completely, considering it to be another
declarative and insignificant statement. It is also possible that
Azerbaijan is unwilling to conceive the message, seeing how it loses
the dream of starting a new war in Karabakh to check the efficiency of
weapons purchased liberally, as well as of `the strongest army in the
region,’ the incompetence of which was once proved by the NKR armed
forces.

Foreign investment in Armenian economy falls 19.5% in Q1

YEREVAN. June 2

The flow of foreign investment into the economy of Armenia contracted
by 19.5% year-on-year to $130.6 million in the first quarter of this
year, the National Statistics Service reported.

Direct foreign investment was down 19.9% at $93.7 million.

Telecommunications received the largest proportion of foreign
investments during the reporting period – $41.9 million (or 32% of all
foreign investments) and of direct foreign investments – $40.2 million
(42.9% of all direct foreign investments). Air transport absorbed
$20.2 million in foreign investments (15.5%) and $1 million in direct
foreign investment. The mining industry and pit mining got $12.1
million in direct foreign investment.

The top three investors in the Armenian economy were France – $37.7
million in direct foreign investment (up 11.9%), Russia – $23 million
(down 55.7%), and Britain – $21.7 million (up 9.6-fold).

Investment from Russia was mainly aimed at energy and
gas-distribution, the production of supporting metal constructions,
telecommunications, and also home-building. Investment from France
went mainly to telecommunications and the production of beverages.

YP Boston and ARF Sardarabad Collaborate on Genocide Recognition

YP BOSTON AND ARF SARDARABAD COLLABORATE ON GENOCIDE RECOGNITION SYMPOSIUM

AZG DAILY #101, 04-06-2011

On May 12, 2011, AGBU’s Young Professionals (YP) of Boston and ARF
Sardarabad collaborated to co-sponsor a successful symposium attended
by 85 people, which was titled “Genocide Recognition: The Road Ahead.”
Chris Mensoian and Nicole Meregian of AGBU YP Boston, and Jirayr
Beugekian of the ARF Sardarabad, served as event chairs. Together, the
groups organized a panel of four distinguished Armenians: Aram
Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA; Marc Mamigonian, Director
of Academic Affairs of NAASR; Dr. Michael G. Mensoian, Professor
Emeritus, Middle East and Political Geography, UMASS Boston; and
Khatchig Mouradian, editor of the Armenian Weekly and PhD student in
Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Clark University. Alin Gregorian,
editor of the Armenian Mirror-Spectator, served as moderator.

Chairwoman of YP Boston, Nicole Meregian, gave opening remarks and
introduced the participants and special guests, including
Massachusetts State Representative Jonathan Hecht (D-Watertown/West
Cambridge).

The panelists discussed and debated a wide range of topics within the
realm of genocide recognition, including reparations, the role of the
Armenian diaspora in genocide recognition, the future security of
Javakhk and Karabakh, and the importance of genocide education in U.S.
academic institutions.

Following the discussion, moderator Gregorian and the audience
directed questions to the panelists. Speaking of the importance of the
symposium, event co-chair Chris Mensoian said, “Discussions like this
are very important and necessary to engage and educate the community
and to avoid further apathy, which results in less participation in,
and donations to, worthy Armenian organizations and causes. It’s a
small victory, but a victory nonetheless, each time an event like this
takes place and there is an open discussion of Armenian issues.”

Each speaker added something to the discussion from his or her own
perspective. In the context of Turkey, panelist Mouradian highlighted
the importance of justice for the Armenian genocide, and noted that,
often, calls to being “realistic” in the quest for justice – and other
attempts to reject demands for more than symbolic recognition – are
part of the structural violence against Armenians. Mouradian also
emphasized the importance of genocide education as part of the
curriculum of U.S. schools, so that children are taught correct
history from a young age, and so that it will be increasingly
difficult for the U.S. government and future leaders to ignore
historical facts.

Dr. Mensoian expressed his deep concern for the future of Javakhk and
Karabakh, and emphasized that diasporan organizations need to invest
more into these lands so that Armenia does not lose them. Hamparian
stressed the importance of both genocide recognition and the security
of the above regions, explaining in detail how the ANCA works hard on
both of these Armenian causes. He also went on to explain how Turkey
invests heavily into lobbying against genocide recognition, and it is
therefore imperative for Armenians to counter this, to donate more to
groups like the ANCA, Armenian Assembly, and other similar
organizations.

Mamigonian added to this discussion from an academic perspective,
stating that Turks donate hundreds of thousands of dollars each year
to American universities in order to establish Turkish Studies
programs, which employ American professors, who in turn teach and
state publicly that the Armenian Genocide never occurred. There is a
strong need for more genocide and Armenian studies programs to
counteract the detrimental effects of genocide denial, and there is an
urgent need for funding from the Armenian diaspora.

AYF Great Boston Nejdeh Chapter chairman, Stepanos Keshishian, was in
attendance and shared his thoughts on the event. “Personally, I
thought it was a great initiative to bring together Armenians of
different sub-communities for a discussion. Although we may have
differing political beliefs or ideologies, the important thing is that
we all work for the health of our nation and for the well-being and
comfort of all our brothers and sisters around the world,” he said.

AGBU YP Boston and ARF Sardarabad were pleased with the success of the
event and felt it was important to collaborate on the symposium
because of the common goal shared by all Armenians – genocide
recognition and education. All Armenians stand together on this issue,
and should continue to promote this type of collaboration and
collegiality so that one day Armenian Genocide recognition is a
reality, not just a dream.

Kevorkian art work displayed in Mass. museum

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Jack Kevorkian was famous for advocating
physician-assisted suicide, but the doctor also was an artist,
composer and writer whose works are displayed in a Massachusetts
museum celebrating Armenian culture.

Four of his paintings are on display at the Armenian Library and
Museum of America in Watertown with about a dozen more in storage.
Curator Gary Lind-Sinanian says the museum also has a collection of
his compositions and writings.

Kevorkian died in Michigan on Friday. He was 83.

Many of Kevorkian’s works deal with dying. Lind-Sinanian says “Nearer
my God to Thee,” which depicts a human clawing the walls as he’s
dragged to his death, represents Americans’ fear of death.

Lind-Sinanian says the museum has already seen a surge in e-mail
requests for signed posters of Kevorkian’s art.

‘Azerbaijan will not let Armenia participate in Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project’
Fri 03 June 2011 11:03 GMT | 14:03 Local Time

Azerbaijan will not let Armenia to participate in regional projects,
involving Azerbaijan, including Baku-Tbilisi-Kars.
It says in a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan.

Georgian ambassador to Armenia Tengiz Sharmanashvili, speaking to
press conference in Yerevan on 31 May, said it is important that
Armenia joins Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.

He noted that Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, designed to deliver oil to
Europe through Turkey, is “promising in economic terms.”

“However, we are not going to question the relations with Armenia
because of these economic prospects,” stressed Sharmanashvili, noting
that Georgia has repeatedly announced that it will never agree to the
blockade of Armenia.

Asked whether the Armenian side can use this railway for freight and
passenger traffic to Europe, the ambassador replied in affirmative.

`They can not set conditions for us on how to use the railway located
in our country. This will be an open road, and it will be used by all
economic actors who will conclude relevant agreements,” Sharmanashvili
said adding that “if you ever allow anyone to interfere in your policy
this way, others will want to do the same thing, so we will not allow
it to happen.”

However, the Foreign Ministry statement shows that Sharmanashvili has
clearly overestimated his own influence on this process.

Armenia’s participation in a project funded by the Azerbaijan is
impossible, the Foreign Ministry stated.

Turkish Officers Jailed Over Dink Killing, Milliyet Reports

By Emre Peker – Jun 3, 2011 9:21 AM GMT+0300

A Turkish court in Trabzon jailed six gendarmerie officers in
connection with the murder of Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, Milliyet
newspaper said.

Colonel Ali Oz, then commander of the gendarmerie at the coastal city
on the Black Sea, and Captain Metin Yildiz of the intelligence unit
were sentenced to six months in prison, according to the newspaper.
The court also jailed four non- commissioned officers for four months.

The officers’ negligence and failure to act on intelligence that Dink
would be assassinated amounts to abetting the killing, Milliyet said,
quoting Engin Cinmen, who represents the family of the deceased
publisher of the Agos newspaper.

Dink was shot dead outside his office in Istanbul on Jan. 19, 2007.
