a person who enjoyed great respect in our country.

Karabakh Elena Bonner had been actively protecting our nation’s right
to self-determination. She visited our country and together with

Karabakh Conflict Has No Rapid Solution – Russian Expert

KARABAKH CONFLICT HAS NO RAPID SOLUTION – RUSSIAN EXPERT

news.am

Armenia

No crucial breakthrough in the Karabakh peace process is expected in
the near future, said Russian political expert Maksim Minayev.

Basic principles for the conflict settlement are being discussed
but most likely it is so-called road map providing for further
consultations, not more, the expert told Day.az.

According to the expert, if the parties come to any agreement in
the near future the peace process will intensify first of all in
trilateral Moscow – Baku – Yerevan and without the participation of
the OSCE Minsk Group, or its limited participation.

“The settlement has no rapid solution, even with active intervention
of external actors,” Minayev said adding that peace process will
be protracted.

As regards the format of the negotiation process, he noted that all
the talks under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group are Á formality
because in fact Moscow is pulling the strings.

People Do Not Know What Will Be Signed In Kazan

PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW WHAT WILL BE SIGNED IN KAZAN

08:47 pm | Today | Politics

Most of Yerevan citizens think no document will be signed during the
meeting of Armenian, Azerbaijan and Russia Presidents in Kazan.

They believe that Serzh Sargsyan will not agree to sign a document
with Azerbaijan without consulting with his people.

“I do not know the contents of the document; however, I do not think
that it can solve the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict,” said Yerevan
citizen Ashot Babayan.

“I fought in the war for 4 years and 6 months. I am from Karabakh
but I do not have great expectations from the meeting,” said Martik
Ghazaryan.

“People are in the dark. They are ignorant of the document and have
great fears. Let us not forget that we shed blood to preserve our
lands,” said Vazgen Vardanyan who lives in London.

Many of our respondents reminded the Armenian leadership that part of
Armenian territorities (Shahumyan, Getashen, Martakert, Artsvashen)
is still controlled by Azerbaijan.

“Should Azerbaijan wage a war against Armenia, we shall all take up
arms to protect our homeland,” they said unanimously.

“Why should we cede anything? We have so many lands to return,”
said Manuk Harutyunyan.

Alyev knows that they cannot win; therefore they do not start a war.

Azerbaijan has weapons but does not have soldiers to fight,” said
Martik Ghazaryan.

Suciyan: The Elections In Turkey: An Assessment

SUCIYAN: THE ELECTIONS IN TURKEY: AN ASSESSMENT
By: Talin Suciyan

Mon, Jun 20 2011

With a total voter turnout of 86.7 percent, The Justice and Development
Party (AKP) won 49.9 per cent of all votes in Turkey’s parliamentary
elections on June 12, securing 326 seats in the parliament. The
Repubilcan People’s Party (CHP), the founding party of Turkey
garnered only 25.91 percent. In 31 cities, CHP was unable to secure
the necessary votes to send representatives to the parliament.

The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) remained to be the third most
popular party with with 12.99 percent of the votes and 53 seats.

The Prime Minister’s victory speech was the most “imperialist” speech
he could have delivered. Almost imitating Suleiman the Magnificant,
Erdogan was “embracing” the whole world from one end to the other.

The surprise was elsewhere, however. Despite all the impediments and
pressures, 36 independent candidates of the Labour, Democracy and
Freedom Block, affiliated with Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), made
their way into the parliament. Especially, Leyla Zana’s reelection
has a historical importance for the Kurdish political movement
as well as for Turkish political history. Alongside Kurdish and
Turkish candidates, the block nominated a Syriac candidate from
Mardin, Erol Dora, who was also elected. Dora called his election
as a “revolutionary step.” Indeed, to have a representative in the
parliament from an ethnic group which is legally not even recognized
as a minority, would raise issues that remained unknown until now.

On the other hand, for the next elections, the 10 percent election
treshhold continues to threaten the representation of BDP, which
gathered 6.65 per cent of the votes (I only mention BDP because the
other parties could not even gather 2 percent of the votes).

I was not in Turkey on June 12, so I followed the elections by
zapping from one TV channel to the other. A prominent columnist
Nuray Mert was interpreting the election results on IMC TV (a newly
established, opposition TV Channel) by saying that AKP has not only
become the mainstream party in Turkey but also it has also become
the establishment itself–and not a victim of the establishment as
they claim to be.

It should be mentioned that AKP could not secure 367 seats, which
they needed to change the Constitution, and therefore the ruling
party will need the support of at least one of the other parties in
the parliament to rewrite the Constitution. Political scientist Prof.

BuÅ~_ra Ersanlı commented that AKP has always been and will most
likely continue playing the role of big brother, who has the majority
in the parliament and requires smaller parties to approach it. Ersanlı
reminded in this context how AKP kept marginalising the independent
candidates supported by the Peace and Democracy Party throughout its
election campaign.

At this point I should perhaps comment on the election coverage
of Turkish TV station, and specifically of NTV. Unfortunately,
watching election results on NTV–the leading news channel which has
fundamentally improved news reporting in Turkey–was an excruciating
task. NTV insisted on ignoring the rising number of successful
independent candidates and kept on reporting the results of ruling
party and the opposition parties. Eventually, we got to know the
number of elected independent candidates from another TV channel.

However, the censorship mechanism of NTV has been crystalized
especially after the live TV show with the prominent Turkish novelist,
moviemaker, poet and political activist Vedat Turkali on June 2.

Turkali, sent his greetings to life long imprisoned leader of PKK
Abdullah Ocalan, and said that he was going to vote for the guerilla
fighters. A senior TV reporter, who was once anchorwomen of NTV,
Banu Guven, was immiadetly sent to vacation as on June 3, and the
link of that program on the internet disappeared.

Yet, it was not over…While watching the enthusiastic celebrations in
Diyarbakir on IMC TV on the occasion of the victory of independent
candidates, we realized that something went wrong. Within a few
minutes, IMC reported that the police interfered to put an end to
the celebrations by using tear gas. At that moment, Prime Minister
Erdogan started his victory speech in Ankara, most probably so that
no one would pay attantion to Diyarbakır while he speaks. Once again,
people of Diyarbakir understood what victory of AKP means for them. No
need to say that the police’s violent crackdown on the celebrations
in Diyarbakir was reported in passing and without any footage by NTV,
altough they had a live broadcast team in Diyarbakir.

Erdogan’s Speech

The Prime Minister’s victory speech was the most “imperialist” speech
he could have delivered. Almost imitating Suleiman the Magnificant,
Erdogan was “embracing” the whole world from one end to the other. He
was claiming that Turkey had achieved democratic freedom, setting a
good example for the region and the entire world. He said “Damascus
won as much as Ankara did, Ramallah won as much as Diyarbakir did….

The Middle East, Caucasus, the Balkans and Europe won as much as
Turkey did.” With these statements, he sounded like a 16th century
“Golden Age” Ottoman Emperor!

Ever since the popular uprisings in the neighbouring Arab countries
started, Turkey has been marketing herself as an oasis of stability
and development, the “one and only good example of a functioning
democracy in the Middle East.” Yet, one has to keep in mind that
this discourse is a consequence of rising imperial desires on the
one hand, and on the other, very easily, it sweeps the 30-year war
in the country under the rug.

When the power holders in Turkey country talk about the “brotherhood”
of “Turks, Kurds, Circasians, Abkhazians, Georgians….” it should
be reminded that this exact discourse was employed in 19th century
Ottoman Empire, and it was maintained until its collapse, even while
genocides were being committed and ethnic cleansings was taking place.

I do not mean here that whoever uses the discourse of
brotherhood–which I find problematic in the first place–has criminal
intentions. What I am saying is that power holders should think
twice before uttering such words. Moreover, is it not obvious how
Ottoman claims of “bringing civilization to the Arabs” and Erdogan’s
pretension of Turkey’s becoming democratic, stable model for the
Middle East constitute a similar discouse? Is it not stemming from
the same imperial desires? Moreover, while Prime Minister was saying
that “Ramallah won as much as Diyarbakir did,” could it not be argued
that he had forgotten what these cities mean for Palestinians and
Kurds respectively?

Mihail Vasiliadis, editor-in-chief of Greek daily Apoyevmatini was
among the guests of IMC TV on election day. Commenting on Erdogan’s
speech, he remineded us the popular saying “My lord God is still
above you.” He expressed his satisfaction for being invited to a
TV show for the first time in his 52 year long professional life,
in order to talk about the elections. Vasiliadis said that in the
past he was only invited to TV programs and panels if they were in
some way or another related to issues of Greeks in Turkey.

Last but not least, in Erdogan’s speech, there was no direct or even
indirect reference to peace–ending finishing the war. He asked for
the blessing of the ones whom he might have hurt during his election
campaign. These words most probably were addressing CHP and MHP,
which means that the ruling party would first approach to these two
for the long-awaited Constitution change. Police interference in
the celebrations in Diyarbakir, and the closing of Kurdish newspaper
Azadiya Welat for 15 days as of Monday June 13, indicate that there
is no change in the position of AKP regarding the Kurds.

The results of elections revealed once again that the voters are not
organized on the basis of their class. In other words, the struggle
mainly led by Kurds, to get political, cultural, and social rights
has way more power to organize people than class consciousness. One
of the most important reasons for this is evaporation of differences
and consolidation of AKP, CHP and MHP when it comes to nationalism,
authoritarianism and/or conservatism. Therefore, let us conclude
that Turkish society continues to be by and large nationalist and
conservative. Of course this is no surprise. Yet, this poses the
biggest challenge to the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), since in
the coming four years, it will be their mission to explain what it
means to be a meaningful opposition and convince the broader society
of the necessity of such opposition. Probably, in order to find the
most appropriate way, one has to first understand the reason why
impoverished people continue to vote for conservative parties. BDP’s
success would depend on its capacity to create tangible alternatives
as an opposition, meeting the needs of Kurds and all other vulnerable
groups.

Azeri Blackmailing Of Swedish MPs

AZERI BLACKMAILING OF SWEDISH MPS

Aysor.am

Azeri blackmailing of Swedish MPs

Since the Swedish Riksdag’s 2010 recognition of the Armenian genocide,
the Azeri community in Sweden has gone into hyper drive, taking all
opportunities to slander the Riksdag’s decision, especially those
who voted for the recognition and were active forces in that process.

The opposition parties, the Social Democrat-Left-Green block, who
supported the resolution for recognition, have been chastised for their
move, but recently the Azeri Federation in Sweden has stepped up its
activities and targeted a selected number of MPs in the Riksdag,
namely Fredrik Malm (Liberal) and Annelie Enochson (Christian
Democrat). Malm and Annelie, both members of the ruling coalition,
visited Armenia last April where they met a number of Armenian
officials, participated in the April 24 commemoration ceremony and
received the Armenian Parliamentary medal as a token of gratitude
for their role in the Swedish recognition of the genocide.

>From being a general campaign of declaration of no confidence towards
supporters of the genocide recognition, the campaign has now hit a
genuine low-water-mark. What some Azeri organizations are doing now
cannot be described by any other words, than a full-out smearing
campaign against selected Swedish MPs as well as the Armenians and
Armenia. At every opportunity, regardless of the discussed topic,
Armenia is depicted as an aggressor, an ethnic-cleansing and corrupt
country, while Armenians are highly involved in gangster and mafia
activities and their lobby organizations bribe and buy MPs and
officials who run the Armenian errands. This is, among others,
manifested in a bizarre letter to the Liberal party, in which the
Azeri organization has demanded a survey of Fredrik Malm’s financial
accounts to see whether he has recently received payments from the
Armenian government.

By sending numerous emails to the parliamentary groups, Malm and
Enochson have been accused by Azeris for being “paid by the Armenian
lobby” and “being agents of the Armenian government”. There is also
a misinformation campaign which included the misquotation of another
Christian Democrat MP, Ms. Desiree Petrus, who in a meeting with the
Azeri Federation, had been quoted to have said that “the recognition
of the Armenian genocide was a historic mistake”. However, when
asked to confirm this quote, Ms. Petrus dismissed the formulation,
saying that she had never said such a thing. She had commented that
Riksdag was not the optimal instance to discuss this kind of matters.

“However, we consider that there is a value in recognizing that a
genocide has occurred in Armenia. To that we have no objections”, Ms.

Petrus concluded. It should be noted that several MPs have replied
to the sender of the emails pointing out the non-constructive and
aggressive nature of their campaign.

The actions of the Azeri community are highly regrettable, but in
some manner reflect the same regrettable posture of official Baku, i.e.

misinformation, smearing and intimidation. These actions are especially
questionable in a time when the entire international community is
closely following the ongoing Karabakh negotiations and is carefully
optimistic about the outcome from the upcoming Azeri and Armenian
meeting in Kazan. A prerequisite for a positive outcome from that
meeting, securing a peaceful and enduring solution to the Karabakh
conflict is mutual respect between Armenians and Azeris, something
which the Azeri community in Sweden is flagrantly violating.

Armenian And British Charities Celebrated At Buckingham Palace

ARMENIAN AND BRITISH CHARITIES CELEBRATED AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE

By:Armenian Weekly
Mon, Jun 20 2011

LONDON, United Kingdom-His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales hosted
a historic Anglo-Armenian charity event in support of Armenian and
British charities at Buckingham Palace on June 15. Project initiator
and main benefactor Armen Sarkissian, former Prime Minister of Armenia
and President of Eurasia House International, welcomed more than 250
guests from around the world with His Royal Highness.

(L to R): HRH The Prince of Wales, Levon Sayan, Charles Aznavour,
and Armen Sarkisisan.

Members of the royal family, dignitaries, world-renowned political,
cultural and civic leaders, and senior executives of global
corporations attended this unique charity event. Prime Minister of
Armenia Tigran Sargsyan, and Mayor of Yerevan Karen Karapetyan were
among the guests of honor.

“It gives me the greatest pleasure to be able to welcome you all to
this very special occasion at Buckingham Palace,” said the Prince of
Wales in his remarks and expressed his thanks to all the donors of
“Yerevan My Love” and Dumfries House.

The evening started with a reception, following by a unique concert
especially put together on this occasion. World renowned soprano Renee
Fleming and violin virtuoso and conductor Maxim Vengerov, took part in
the programme, along with the Philharmonia Orchestra (London) and the
Bach Choir. In addition to Handel, the choir sang most moving pieces
from the Armenian liturgy, Surb, Surb and Hayr Mer by Makar Ekmalian.

As a tribute to “Yerevan My Love,” Vengerov played Komitas’s Krung
for the first time in his musical career, captivating the emotions of
the audience. Renee Fleming enthralled the audience not only with her
superb and mesmerizing voice, but also with her poignant remarks. A
banquet followed in the magnificent Picture Gallery of the Palace.

“Yerevan My Love” is a heritage-led regeneration project dedicated to
preserving architecturally significant buildings in Yerevan and putting
them to use to improve the life experience of disabled children,
young people and disadvantaged families. Following the successful
fundraising in 2010, three buildings in the vicinity of St.

Hovhanes Church in the Kond neighbourhood of Yerevan are being built
and reconstructed. Three additional architecturally significant
buildings will be reconstructed in the Old Yerevan neighbourhood as
part of the second phase of “Yerevan My Love project,” supported by
the fundraising this year.

In his eloquent remarks, Armen Sarkissian highlighted the role of
every individual in the preservation of culture and heritage and the
universality of culture. He said, “It is a privilege for me to thank
you each and every one of you for your contributions, for your support
and, most important, for sharing a belief that culture and heritage
are part of our soul and we have to pass it on to the next generation,
to our children.”

The Prince of Wales underlined that “the evening is also an occasion
to strengthen the strong ties and friendship between Armenia and the
United Kingdom. He said, “I have long admired Armenia as the oldest
Christian nation in the world, with its unique architectural heritage.

It is so heartening that the ‘Yerevan My Love’ project is preserving
and continuing traditional Armenian architecture and craftsmanship.”

Dumfries House is a unique house in South-West Scotland which
had retained much of the furniture commissioned for it from Thomas
Chippendale. A few years ago The Prince of Wales forestall the separate
sales of the House and its contents to private bidders. He has since
assured that the House and its unique collection of furniture are
preserved for the British nation and future generations.

Armen Sarkissian thanked His Royal Highness for his visionary
leadership and foresight in many critical issues facing not only
Britain but also the entire globe. “We thank him for his full support
and cooperation in making this night a very special occasion,”
said Sarkissian. He pointed out that “the international array of
participation is a wonderful example of global cooperation in charity
and heritage preservation.”

Davit Babayan Says Format Of NK Negotiations Distorted

DAVIT BABAYAN SAYS FORMAT OF NK NEGOTIATIONS DISTORTED

ARMENPRESS
JUNE 20, 2011
YEREVAN

The expectations from the trilateral meeting of the presidents of
Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan in Kazan are not big, head of the NKR
information department Davit Babayan told Armenpress, explaining
that the negotiation process is passing in a distorted format –
without direct participation of Nagorno Karabakh.

At the same time, the latter noted that Artsakh welcomes any meeting
that can somehow have positive impact on preservation of stability
in the region. “The NKR must be direct participant of the negotiations.

Currently a strange situation has been created when an attempt
is being made to regulate the issue or come to consent without
full participation of one of the parties. The main guilty of it
is Azerbaijan as thanks to its unconstructive position the current
strange situation has been created”, Babayan said.

Nevertheless, he finds that a general scenario of the conflict
settlement may be worked out in Kazan.

“In 2012 active political period is expected in Artsakh, Armenia,
Russia, the USA and France as a result the NK conflict settlement
process will slow down”, Babayan said.
