Russia To Continue Pushing For Karabakh Settlement, Medvedev Says

RUSSIA TO CONTINUE PUSHING FOR KARABAKH SETTLEMENT, MEDVEDEV SAYS

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW

Russia will continue fostering dialogue on Nagorny Karabakh settlement,
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday after meeting with
his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan.

Nagorny Karabakh, a breakaway region on Azerbaijani territory with a
predominantly ethnic Armenian population, has been at the center of
a bitter conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“An important topic of our discussion is improving stability in South
Caucasus,” Medvedev said, adding that he and Sargsyan shared opinions
on the situation surrounding Karabakh settlement. “I personally
believe that a fair settlement of the conflict can only be achieved
politically,” Medvedev added.

“Russia will continue fostering Nagorny Karabakh negotiations as a
co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group and through direct contacts with
the leadership of Armenia and Azerbaijan,” the President Medvedev said.

In his turn, Sargsyan praised Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergei
Lavrov for their mediation efforts and confirmed readiness to stick
to peaceful methods in resolving the conflict.

Under the updated in Madrid principles of the settlement Azerbaijan
insist Armenia should withdraw in the near future its troops from
the territories of Azerbaijan.

An agreement on Nagorny Karabakh will only be possible if Azerbaijan
gives up a number of amendments suggested during a meeting in Kazan,
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan said.

Armenia and Azerbaijan were unable to come to an agreement on the
path to peace in Nagorny Karabakh after a meeting in Russia’s Kazan
in June, but said some progress had been made.

Nagorny Karabakh has remained under Armenian control since the late
1980s, when the region claimed independence from Azerbaijan. The
conflict is estimated to have left more than 30,000 people dead on
both sides between 1988 and 1994.

AGBU Western District Celebrates Renowned Actor, Director And
Entertainer Krikor Satamian’s Golden Jubilee

By Aleen L. Khanjian

Pasadena, CA – On Sunday, October 30, 2011, at 6:30 pm, the Armenian
General Benevolent Union (AGBU) will celebrate the Golden Jubilee of
renowned actor, entertainer, comedian, and director Krikor Satamian. The
program featuring speakers Assadour Guzelian from London, England, and
Sarkis Minassian, as well as lifelong friends, co-stars, and admirers of
Satamian, will commemorate and honor his 50 years as an entertainer. The
event will also feature a highly anticipated artistic program.

While Satamian is well known for his current role as director of the
AGBU Ardavazt Theatre Group in Los Angeles, where he has served for a
large part of his career, in addition to his role as the AGBU Western
District’s Artistic Director, there is no denying that his history,
diverse training, and contribution to the international theatrical
community is broad and enduring.

A review of Satamian’s fifty years in theater proves outstanding to say
the least. Following his graduation from the American University of
Beirut (AUB), Satamian attended the London School of Film Technique as
well as the Bristol Old Vic Theater School. Following a season of
theatrical performances at the Belgrade Theater in Coventry City,
England, he returned to Lebanon to serve as the Artistic Director of the
AGBU Vahram Papazian Theatre Group. While in Lebanon, Satamian also
served as a lecturer of Drama at AUB.

Satamian joined the AGBU Vahram Papazian Theatre Group as a young actor
in 1960. Twelve years later, as its Artistic Director, he led the same
theatre group on a well-received tour of Armenia. In 1975, Satamian led
the group to France, England, and Cyprus. Following his work with the
Vahram Papazian Theatre Group, he went on to teach at the Bristol Old
Vic Theater School before becoming resident director at New York’s
famous Off-Broadway company, “Colonnades Theater Lab,” in 1976. After
his success at Colonnades, Satamian was invited to the “Hope Summer
Repertory Company” to direct on three subsequent occasions.

Satamian has been an avid, active member of the AGBU since his early
childhood. In 1978, he rejoined the world’s largest organization in New
York City as its national artistic director. Since the 1970s, he has
founded several AGBU theater companies in Boston, Detroit, New York, and
Philadelphia, as well as Los Angeles. He was the artistic director of
the AGBU Ardashad Theatre Group, as well as the producer and anchor of
the AGBU-Spotlight Armenians TV program in New York City. In 1988,
Satamian was appointed as artistic director of the AGBU Western
District, and permanently relocated to Los Angeles. He then became the
director of the AGBU Ardavazt Theater Group, which he had helped
establish in 1979, together with Haig Messerlian and Parsegh Kartalian.
To date, Satamian has directed and staged 75 plays and three operettas,
as well as acting in 85 productions.

Some of Satamian’s most memorable characters include: Off-Broadway, with
the Classic Theater, in Shirvanzadeh’s “Evil Spirit” in the demanding
role of Kij-Taniel and later, in Nishan Parlakian’s “Grandma Pray For
Me,” in the lead role of Deacon. Satamian acted in two successful AGBU
professional productions in English: “Three Acts of Love” at the
Fireside Theater, in North Hollywood, and Raffi Arzoomanian’s “The
Moths” at the Hudson Backstage Theater, in Hollywood. Satamian also
partakes in professional American productions. Some of his TV credits
include: Suddenly Susan, The Naked Truth, Team Knight Rider, Mad TV, and
Alias. Satamian’s film credits include: Assignment Berlin, Chickpeas,
One False Step, Subterfuge, Enemies of Laughter, After Freedom,
Pomegranate, as well as Must Love Dogs, which stars Diane Lane, John
Cusack, and Christopher Plummer. Must Love Dogs was directed by the
highly respected Gary David Goldberg.

Satamian is credited as the first actor to introduce the art of stand-up
comedy to the Armenian performance world in 1984. Since then, he has
given more than 150 performances in all the major cities of the United
States and Canada. Bristol Old Vic Theatre School Principal Nat Brenner
wrote about him, “Mr. Satamian has proved one of the most gifted and
brilliant students of the theatre it has ever been my experience and
pleasure to direct.”

The entire Armenian community has undeniably reaped a cultural profit
from Satamian’s lasting contribution. All are invited to partake in
Krikor Satamian’s Golden Jubilee celebration on October 30, at 6:30 pm,
at the Pasadena AGBU Center located at 2495 E. Mountain Street, in
Pasadena. For more information, please call the AGBU Western District
Office at (626) 794-7942.

Established in 1906, AGBU () is the world’s largest
non-profit Armenian organization. Headquartered in New York City, AGBU

educational, cultural and humanitarian programs, annually touching the
lives of some 400,000 Armenians around the world.

Euro Under 19 Qualification Update: Armenia Continues Success

After the most successful qualification campaign by the senior
national team for Armenia, their youth sides have continued to have
their fair share of success.

The Under-21 side is currently tied with the Czech Republic in their
Euro 2013 qualification campaign. The Under-17 side defeated
Wales – then-ranked 17 in Europe – 3-2 after initially trailing 2-0. They
ended up losing 2-1 to the Serbians, ranked 11th, to set up a chance
to move on with a victory over Lithuania and a Serbia draw or victory
against Wales.

In the midst of all of this, the nation was selected to host Group 10
for the 2012 Euro qualifiers for the Under-19 sides. Joining the
Armenians are Greece, Slovakia and Andorra with the first fixtures
having taken place earlier today and the next two scheduled for
October 23rd and October 26th.

Armenia was slated to open up qualifiers against Slovakia and were
victorious 2-1 with Hovhaness Hovhannisyan, of Pyunik Yerevan FC,
scoring both for the home side. Jakub Vojtus had a beauty of a
consolation goal for the Slovakian side.

In the other match in the group, the Greeks thumped minnow Andorra by
a final tally of 10 goals to none, with seven different players having
put one behind the net. Greece and Armenia will face off next, with
Slovakia taking on Andorra.

Final match day sees the Armenians taking on Andorra with Greece and
Slovakia facing off. The top two teams from each group move on along
with the highest ranking third-place side.

Teams that have already qualified to the “Elite Round” include host
nation Estonia along with England, France and Spain, all of which
received a bye. Bosnia & Herzegovina and the Republic of Ireland
advanced from Group 2. Romania and Italy advance from Group 3; Germany
and Montenegro from Group 7; Belgium and Slovenia from Group 8;
Denmark and Austria from Group 12.

Work beginning on building Armenian church

Work beginning on building Armenian church

St. Garabed Armenian Apostolic Church

Clark County Planning Commissioners approved Tuesday night the designs
for a new Armenian church to be built near the intersection of Desert
Inn Road and Burnham Avenue within Winchester.

Plans approved for valley’s first permanent Armenian church Two years
after purchasing a half-acre parcel of land for a new church, Parish
Council President Andy Armenian broke ground on the St. Garabed
Armenian Apostolic Church Thursday.

The church, located at 2054 East Desert Inn Road near the Eastern
Avenue intersection, will be Nevada’s first Armenian church.

`We have been holding our services in different locations and it was
time for us to have our own home,’ Armenian said. `It was a dream that
we’ve been after for the past 10 years.’

For the past couple of years, services have been held in one of two
structures on the new property. Before that, Armenian said the church
was run out of a rented room at a Lutheran church on Sahara Avenue.

The design for the more than 3,500-square-foot church is based on
traditional Armenian architectural features dating back more than a
thousand years.

`We forget how many diverse religions we have in this community,’ said
Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani, who supports Armenian’s
efforts to give his church a permanent home. `This will give them
visibility. This will help us support and applaud the multiculturalism
of Las Vegas.’

She said the church filled a once-empty lot in an older part of town.

`I think it sets a tone,’ Giunchigliani said. `It will help that neighborhood.’

The land for the new site was purchased in 2009 and the Clark County
Planning Commission approved plans for the church in December.

Back then the church, which conducts sermons in Armenian, had only 60
members. Armenian said the congregation has grown close to 150 weekly
members.

`Now that we’re building it, we hope that people will more regularly
come to church,’ Armenian said.

The church seats about 150 people. Armenian doesn’t plan on an influx
of visitors but is prepared if the church can no longer hold its
growing membership.

`We’ll have multiple services if that happens,’ he said. `Morning and
noon, to deal with an increase in the congregation. Anyone who wants
to come and visit will be welcome.’

Construction for the church is slated to start in late November and
Armenian plans to hold the first service at the end of next year.

Armenia thanks Russia for Karabakh help

Armenia is grateful for Russia’s efforts aimed at resolving the
Karabakh conflict, the country’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian
told reporters in the run-up to President Serzh Sargsyan’s visit to
Moscow scheduled for October 23-25.

The diplomat noted that the Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev initiated
numerous summits on the issue and is constantly working on the
problem.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a landlocked unrecognized Armenian enclave that
broke away from Azerbaijan in 1988. The OSCE Minsk Group featuring
Russia, the US and France have been dealing with the conflict since
1992. (IF)
