INITIATORS AND PERPETRATORS OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE SHOULD BE IMPRISONED AND CRUELLY SENTENCED – SHERIFF BEY

news.am, Armenia
Sept 8 2011

PARIS. – French-Armenian Michel Petrosyan, who is over 90, brings
testimonies of Sheriff Bey about the planned annihilation of the
Armenian people in her memoirs “History of free France in the Levant.”

Sheriff served under the command of Mustafa Abdulhalik-Bey, the
Prefecture of Aleppo. The testimony was made public on April 24,
1946 in Zebdani, Syria, Nouvelles d`Armenie reports.

“I confess that during my military activity I witnessed torturing
scenes of pursue and bloody, severe slaughter, which was carried out
by our soldiers against the deported Armenians in the region of Aleppo
during the World War I. I am greatly sorry for those inhuman acts,
which is improper for our state and nation. I strongly condemn those
people from Unity and Progress Party who were responsible for those
tortures at that time and ordered the annihilation. Deaths of hundreds
of thousands of Armenians is on their conscious, while we could have
lived in peace with those Armenians and be happy. Our leaders in
authority committed a crime, which has no forgiveness. They must be
imprisoned and sentenced severely, in order not to mix guilty Turks
with innocent ones and that future generations knew it and did not
forget. Those generations have the responsibility to clear the black
page of our history. Thus, I call the two nations to live together
in peace and security,” reads the testimony.

KARABAKH ISSUE’S IMMINENT RESOLUTION CONFLICTS WITH INTERESTS OF A SUPERPOWER – FORMER ARMENIAN NA SPEAKER

news.am, Armenia
Sept 8 2011

YEREVAN. – The Nagorno-Karabakh (NK) problem’s regulation in a
foreseeable future conflicts with the interests of one of the two
superpowers, which have a bearing on the South Caucasus, said former
Armenian NA speaker Tigran Torosyan during a conference today. The
event, entitled “New Approaches Toward the NK Issue,” is devoted to
the 20th anniversary of NKR’s independence.

“Under no circumstance should we observe that state as our opponent.

That country has its own interests and defends them, just like any
other country,” Torosyan added.

In his words, emphasis of the peace talks needs to be changed toward
the direction of NK’s status. “The Kosovo issue showed that the
situation begins to come out of an impasse only in the case when
the status issue becomes paramount. When this matter was put on the
backburner in Kosovo and replaced by the strengthening of democracy,
armed clashes resumed. So, it is necessary to take into account that
status is the first issue that needs to be solved. And the rest are
its outcomes,” former Armenian NA speaker concluded.

TURKISH PRESS AGAIN MISREPRESENTS CHARLES AZNAVOUR’S COMMENTS – ARMENIAN POLITICAL ACTIVIST

Turkish press has again misrepresented renowned singer, Armenian
Ambassador to Switzerland Charles Aznavour’s words, noting that,
in “Vivement Dimanche” program on France 2 television, Aznavour had
allegedly said: “The genocide terminology disturbs me,” stated Armenian
Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun (ARFD) Party’s Armenian Cause
and Political Affairs European Office Director Hilda Tchoboian, in an
interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am. “Speaking about Turkey and the
Turks, Charles Aznavour always tries to make moderate comments. And he
tried to differentiate between Turkish individuals and the Turkish
state in this case, too. But the singer has not said that as if
‘the genocide terminology disturbs me.

‘ The Turks have misrepresented his words. Aznavour simply said
that for him the killing of one Armenian, or 1.5 million Armenians,
is equally unacceptable. During that program he said that there must
be justice,” Tchoboian noted, adding that Aznavour had also reflected
on other crimes against humanity, including the Jewish Holocaust.

Hilda Tchoboian also stated that the only part in Aznavour’s comments
which the Turkish press had accurately presented was that the renowned
singer had said that “the Turks are completely different than what
is said about them; they are good people.” Tchoboian also denied the
information the Turkish side had disseminated, according to which,
after those comments by Aznavour, the Armenians from different corners
of the world had supposedly accused him of “denial” and “treason.”

In conclusion, Hilda Tchoboian stressed that “we need to take into
account that Charles Aznavour is not a political figure in France,
and he speaks as an artist. He expresses views that are common to
all artists.”

The mothers and relatives of soldiers who died in peace and simply
citizens concerned about the future of Armenia are marching from the
government building to the presidential residence where they will
hold a silent action.

The goal of the action participants is to make Serzh Sargsyan see
and realize how many soldiers have been killed in peace.

“400 soldiers have died during Serzh Sargsyan’s term in office. These
people are here because blood is valuable for them,” action participant
Arakel Semirjyan said.

Before the march began, the mothers dressed in black made a couple
of spins around the center of Republic Square as a sign of protest,
after which they moved toward the Prosecutor General’s office and
stood there silent for a couple of minutes.

The action participants held photos and signs showing the soldiers
who had died in peace in the army reading “Won’t send my to an army
of cannibals” and “We’re not blind, stop the violence”.

The participants of the “Action of Those Dressed in Black” didn’t
receive any response from government officials or representatives
of the Prosecutor General’s office. There to support them was NA
“Heritage” faction head Stepan Safaryan.

Palestinian People Request UN Recognition

PALESTINIAN PEOPLE REQUEST UN RECOGNITION

PanARMENIAN.Net
September 8, 2011 – 18:47 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) denied
Thursday, September 8 that it had submitted an official request to the
United Nations to recognize Palestine as a member of the world body,
explaining that the campaign launched in Ramallah earlier in the day
was the work solely of grassroots activists.

The letter sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s office in
Ramallah declaring the launch of a campaign to gain statehood
recognition was not an official Palestinian Authority document, a
spokesman for the PLO said Thursday, but rather a grassroots attempt
to garner support ahead of the UN vote in later September.

In the letter, Palestinian officials reportedly urged the leader of
the international community to “exert all possible efforts toward
the achievement of the Palestinian people’s just demands,” Haaretz
reported.

Zolyan addressed the official opening of the conference. He named
the achievements of the Artsakh Republic in recent years. There are
new buildings, roads in Artsakh, the speaker noted. Most importantly,
today Artsakh has all functions of statehood in the defense, security,
social and educational sectors, Zolyan said. However, there are some
problems needing resolution, namely international recognition of NKR
and recognition of NKR negotiation process, according to him.

The conference also hosts a delegation of the Republic of Artsakh. A
speech by Prorector of Artsakh State University, professor, member of
the NKR National Assembly Vahram Balayan focused on self-determination
and territorial integration principles.

‘THE ARMY IN REALITY’. ARMENIAN DEPUTY DEFENSE MINISTER CONTINUES TO MAKE PROMISES

Participants of a march today titled “Army Dressed in Black” organized
by a civic initiative called the “Army in Reality,” holding photos
of soldiers killed in non-combat, first walked around the ring of
Yerevan’s Republic Square toward the RA General Prosecutor’s Office,
then walked up Abovyan St. to Northern Ave down to Liberty Square
and up Baghramyan St.

Reaching the National Assembly building, they turned their back to
the building then marched up to the presidential residence.

As reported by the Epress.am reporter on the scene, marchers initially
stood on the sidewalk across the street from the president’s residence,
but when they saw that police officers were trying to move several
relatives of the deceased soldiers who were just outside the gates
to the opposite side of the street (where they were standing), they
crossed the street and stood right outside the gates, and began to
chant, “Serzhik, go away!” and “Serzhik, murderer!” referring to
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.

Police continued to ask and in some cases shove protestors to stand on
the opposite side of the street, but to no avail. A little while later,
when several marchers were beginning to stand back, Armenian deputy
defense minister Vladimir (“Vova”) Gasparyan arrived and attempted
to speak with the parents of deceased soldiers. Some of the parents,
seeing him, didn’t want to talk and left, while a few stayed and
spoke with him.

Anahit Lazarian, mother of Arayik Avetisyan killed in 2001, told
Gasparyan: “You welcomed us in your office; you said the defense
minister has given you an order; I’m the deputy defense minister and
I will do everything to uncover the case. And what did you do for
approximately 10 months?”

“Never in my life have I thrown my words to the ground. And let god be
my witness. As for this specific case, it is a process which, believe
me, I am coordinating – I am not the investigator. Know something
for sure, let the son of one who devours blood devour blood and let
the son of one who hides it devour blood [too]. That grief that you
have, if it doesn’t go through us [meaning, me] let our [meaning, my]
son devour that [blood too]. It can’t be like that. I understand your
sorrow. Say whatever you want, say you’re procrastinating, but don’t
say you tricked me,” he said.

Anahit Lazarian said, nevertheless, she feels deceived.

Gasparyan insisted there is no crime that goes uncovered.

Asked by a journalist whether Gasparyan, as an official who is
responsible, is not preparing to submit his resignation, the deputy
minister answered in the negative, while adding that the number of
murders in the army has dropped.

On this issue, head of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office
Artur Sakunts told Epress.am, “The issue is that there is also abuse,
which doesn’t ring many alarm bells or is uncovered very rarely. That
is, our whole problem is that the abuse doesn’t stop. In the 22 deaths
this year, when they present statistics, [they say] there was a drop
of 40%, it sounds absurd, what does it mean, 40% – why should it be
common at all?”

Note as well that Gasparyan offered to drive the parents of deceased
soldiers to his office to talk. A few parents agreed to this offer,
while others said they didn’t want to go because they know it won’t
make a difference.

Note that one of the organizers of today’s protest, Hope NGO
representative Lala Aslikyan, told journalists that members of the
group “We Won’t be Silent” told TV companies outside the government
building that they were the organizers of the protest, after which
they disappeared. According to Aslikyan, the group had no connection
with the organization of the protest and march.

Kecharis Monastery: Contradictory Statements From Church Officials

KECHARIS MONASTERY: CONTRADICTORY STATEMENTS FROM CHURCH OFFICIALS
Kristine Aghalaryan

Hetq sent a list of questions to Father Vahram Melikyan, who runs
the Public Affairs Office at Etchmiadzin, regarding the church’s
involvement in the construction of a restaurant at the Kecharis
Monastery.

For the past month, we haven’t been able to get a straight answer
from the Holy See.

We wanted to know when Etchmiadzin had signed a commercial lease with
the Karigag, the company developing the site, and who, on behalf of
the church, actually signed such a document.

Father Melikyan avoided answering our questions, telling us that we
would have to contact the Kotayk Diocese.

When we asked why Etchmiadzin’s chief architect had never been informed
about the construction, Father Melikyan said that the lease agreement
had been signed with the full knowledge of the church.

This would seem to contradict an earlier statement made by Chief
Architect Nazaretyan that Catholicos Garegin II only heard about the
restaurant construction through press reports.

Thus, the construction had already started before either the Catholicos
or Etchmiadzin’s Chief Architect had a clue as to what was happening
and before the building plans had been approved by the church’s
architectural council.

Harutyun Harutyunyan, who is temporarily running the Kotayk Diocese,
had told Hetq that the Holy Resurrection Church at Kecharis was only
being renovated.

Who, if anyone, is telling the truth regarding Kecharis?

Even top church officials can’t seem to agree.

Armenia Plans To Export About 3.7 Thousand Tons Of Potato In 2011

ARMENIA PLANS TO EXPORT ABOUT 3.7 THOUSAND TONS OF POTATO IN 2011

ARKA
Sep 8, 2011

YEREVAN, September 8. /ARKA/. Armenia plans to maintain the volume
of export of potato in 2011 on the level of 2010 in the amount of
3723 tons and even increase the indicators, said Deputy Agriculture
Minister of Armenia Robert Makaryan on Thursday.

He did not make any forecasts regarding the harvest of potato this
year and only mentioned that this year the volumes will increase
compared to the last year.

“Now the cost of potato in local markets is relatively high, as
the season of mass collection of harvest has not started yet. But,
depending on the quality and the size of the potato, the cost per
one kilo of potato is 150-250 drams”, said Makaryan.

Today potato is mainly exported from Armenia to Georgia. He mentioned
the necessity of export development in the country.

In the frames of seed development program in 2011 it is planned to
import about 3 thousand seeds of potato to Armenia.

Total territory of potato seeding in 2010 in Armenia was 28.3 thousand
ha.
