What Armenia Suffers

WHAT ARMENIA SUFFERS

Armenia is a small landlocked country still suffering the economic
impact of the unresolved conflict with Azerbaijan, writes Tom de Waal,
senior researcher for Carnegie Endowment in an article on emigration
from Armenia. He studied emigration from Armenia, wrote about its
reasons, spoke about the difficult situation but apparently he arrived
at a wrong conclusion.

The point is that Armenia is not suffering the economic impact of the
unresolved conflict. Yes, the conflict with Azerbaijan had an impact
on the relations with Turkey, significantly limiting the economic
possibilities for Armenia. But the sufferings of the country are not
caused by this impact.

Armenia suffers the political and economic monopolies, as well as
provincial thinking and morality that began hardly three or four years
after the independence, consistently established and consolidated in
the following years and in the past ten years directly crystallized
and institutionalized. Armenia suffers because it already has the
third president, and all the three presidents ruled, and the third
continues to rule with the mindset that they are the key to the
salvation of the country and any opinion and action beyond their
scope is against the nation.

Armenia suffers because the political government is coalesced with
business and is using the government bodies as support unit for their
own businesses.

Armenia suffers because the Constitution is a titular document which
is implemented to limit the creative potential of the society rather
than to open up this potential.

Armenia suffers weak law enforcement, corruption, injustice,
material and financial greed of the ruling class. If the conflict
with Azerbaijan is resolved and the roads are opened for transport
in the current situation, the change of the situation in Armenia will
not be realistic.

It may sound strange but with the current level, structures, content
and morality in Armenia open roads will lead to considerable increase
in statistics but will be a mere route for the nourishment of political
and economic monopolies, ensuring additional resources for this system.

The change of the situation in Armenia, the growth of importance of
public opinion in internal processes are determined not only by the
rising level of civil consciousness and activity in different layers
of the society, powerful opposition but also the lack of nurturing
resources which weakens the principle of almightiness.

Strangely, though, in Armenia the possibility of internal reform seems
to be greater, even in the current conserved situation the government
will nevertheless take steps because otherwise the government itself
will be threatened.

For Armenia, at least statistical growth is necessary. Certainly we
do not have hope for internal change, there is no will, consistency,
if we think we are doomed to live under the press of the political
and economic monarchy of a group of people, where human rights and
freedoms are dosed, where distribution of wealth is dosed, where a
group of people make decisions which are more forceful than the law,
where we do not set political and civilization goals before the state,
all we can do is to have the blockade lifted and enjoy the fruits
of statistics which can lead to considerable improvements in diet
and clothing.

These are truly important circumstances and man fairly wants to eat
nice food, and dress in nice clothes, and live in comfortable houses
unless it happens at the expense of others.

But in this case the problem is the choice of the public and political
elites, whether they have political and civilization wishes and
ambitions which are above all these things because they are considered
as elite by the scope and quality of their understanding rather than
by food they eat, clothes they wear and houses they live.

Will Vova Close Roads?

WILL VOVA CLOSE ROADS?

Story from Lragir.am News:

The next chief of police of Armenia Vladimir Gasparyan will “organize”
his first rally of the Congress on November 25. His predecessors used
a standard practice regarding the rallies of the Congress, namely
closed the roads to traffic, persecuted the Congress activists,
used violence, etc.

Will Vladimir Gasparyan keep to the “beaten track”?

There is a subtlety. The government is thought to use this tactics to
increase interest towards the Congress and to maintain the “monopoly”
of the Congress as opposition. It is difficult to tell whether the
government thought about it and what its interest was but this practice
produced certain results anyway.

Besides, before the “deciding” rallies of the Congress the press
suddenly bursts with some pornographic scandal or some important
internecine event.

Again, it is difficult to tell if there is such a problem now. The
coordinator of the Congress Levon Zurabyan, for instance, addressed
the Public Television which would be impossible at other times. On the
other hand, another pornographic scandal is maturing on these days,
and the government has two days to “implement” an important event,
such as a government reshuffle.

Hence, Vladimir Gasparyan is facing a dilemma to close the roads or
not, to use violence against the young Congress activists or not.

Family Business Moves Into Creative Designs

FAMILY BUSINESS MOVES INTO CREATIVE DESIGNS
by Bernice Chan

South China Morning Post
November 21, 2011 Monday
HongKong

With his family’s history of five generations in the jewellery
business, Roberto Boghossian feels a great responsibility to carry
on the tradition.

His family, with Armenian roots, has had a turbulent history. His
great-great-grandfather managed to survive the Armenian genocide and
escaped to Syria, where he worked as a waiter. One of his regular
customers eventually offered him a job – in the jewellery business.

He gathered the rest of the surviving family members in Syria and
then Lebanon. Boghossian’s father then moved to Belgium, his uncle
to Geneva.

The dramatic story also coincides with the family’s rise in the
jewellery field, starting out as a precious stones dealer before
focusing more on diamonds and coloured diamonds. About seven years ago,
the Boghossian house began presenting its high jewellery collections.

“We want to develop our assets as much as possible and then add a new
dimension. My father and uncle are open-minded and welcome change,”
Boghossian explained on visit to Hong Kong this month.

The company’s jewellery line, called Bogh-Art, is carried by
Lane Crawford and was shown to well-heeled clients in Island Tang
restaurant in Central. Many tai-tais tried on the pieces and bought
a few signature baubles.

Bogh-Art is best known for its inlay technique, which Boghossian says
is inspired by the Taj Mahal, where precious and semi-precious stones
are inlaid into marble.

“We do inlays into hard stones and the precision required is like
making a complicated watch,” Boghossian says.

He shows an oval pendant of pink siderite that has a Moroccan design
lined with gold and small diamonds. “We make small incisions into
the hard stone using a laser and then melt the gold in there and then
set the diamonds inside,” he says.

Other variations include diamonds or other gemstones within
semi-precious stones such as aquamarines to give it a kind of
“floating appearance”.

The craftsmanship is such that the diamond is integrated into the
host stone and when fingers run over the surface, they practically
feel like one natural piece.

The brand also does traditional high jewellery, and in its collection
has a rare 3.6-carat vivid blue marquise-cut diamond ring and a
15-carat D flawless diamond ring.

Boghossian shows a necklace featuring large round-cut emeralds
encircled by diamonds.

It has added beading work for a delicate finish along with matching
earrings.

Bogh-Art is also innovating jewellery techniques, working with carbon
and titanium to create very modern light pieces shaped like butterfly
wings and the petals of a flower.

Within the framework of the visit to the Netherlands Armenian
Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian had a meeting with his Danish
counterpart Uri Rosenthal. The latter congratulated Edward Nalbandian
on the opening of the Armenian Embassy in the Netherlands, expressing
confidence that it will make a serious contribution to the development
of bilateral ties.

Edward Nalbandian said the opening of the Armenian Embassy in Hague
is aimed at the further deepening, development and reinforcement
of bilateral relations. The Minister attached importance to the
intensification of the political dialogue between the countries and
enhancement of the economic cooperation.

Minister Nalbandian underscored that Armenia rates high the support
of the Netherlands to the development of our country both in bilateral
format and within international financial institutions – the European
Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the International Monetary
Fund and the World Bank.

The interlocutors touched upon the reforms implemented in Armenia. In
this context the Dutch Foreign Minister hailed the steps taken by
the Armenian authorities in that direction.

The Ministers exchanged views on the relations between Armenia and the
European Union, and the negotiations in the Eastern Partnership format.

The same day Minister Nalbandian attended the solemn opening ceremony
of the Armenian Embassy in Hague.

Noting that the Armenian-Dutch relations date back to the depth of
centuries, Minister Nalbandian voiced hope that the Embassy would play
an important role in the deepening of comprehensive relations between
the two friendly countries. Edward Nalbandian attached importance to
the role of the Armenian community, which serves as a unique bridge
between the two peoples.

Edward Nalbandian later met with representatives of the local Armenian
organizations. He briefed the attendees on the priorities and the main
directions of Armenia’s foreign policy and answered their questions.

Turkish Journalists Appear In Court

TURKISH JOURNALISTS APPEAR IN COURT

PanARMENIAN.Net
November 22, 2011 – 11:22 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The first hearing for 14 suspects in the Oda TV
case, including arrested journalists Ahmet Å~^ık and Nedim Å~^ener,
was set to take place on November 21 at Istanbul’s Caglayan courthouse,
Hurriyet Daily News reported.

Prosecutors alleged in the case’s 134-page indictment that Å~^ık’s
manuscript, “İmamın Ordusu” (The Imam’s Army), was an illegal
organization document and “a book draft prepared with other suspects
as instructions and guidelines for the Ergenekon Armed Terrorist
Organization.” Å~^ık faces up to 15 years imprisonment for assisting
a terrorist organization.

The manuscript and other digital copies of the book were seized
in March by law enforcement officials as an “illegal organization
document” and used as evidence.

Former intelligence operative KaÅ~_if Kozinoglu, who died under arrest
on Nov. 12 due to a heart attack, was also set to appear in court.

The case regarding Oda TV, an online news portal known for its fierce
criticism of government policies, began after the police conducted
a search of the website’s offices in February as part of the ongoing
Ergenekon probe.

Despite efforts to erase copies of “The Imam’s Army,” the book recently
went to print and was released in the market at Istanbul’s Tuyap Book
Fair on Nov. 16 under the title “000Kitap” (000Book).

The work was co-authored and edited by 125 journalists who volunteered
their labor in an attempt to publish Å~^ık’s banned book.

Meanwhile, NTV news channel reported that European Court of Human
Rights has accepted Nedim Å~^ener and Ahmet Å~^ık’s application.

Ergenekon is an alleged ultranationalist gang that is accused of
plotting to overthrow the government by fomenting chaos in society.
