Akhtamar on line, 15.11.2011

Braschi a Rome.

jusqu’a l’epoque moderne.

Lebanon, Armenia Sign New Bilateral Agreements

LEBANON, ARMENIA SIGN NEW BILATERAL AGREEMENTS

BEIRUT: Lebanese officials signed agreements with their Armenian
counterparts in Yerevan Friday in an effort to bolster ties between
the two countries.

Ministers from both countries signed cooperation agreements in the
fields of education, environment, industry and tourism following a
wide-ranging meeting between President Michel Sleiman and Armenian
President Serzh Sargsyan at the Presidential Palace in the Armenian
capital.

An official delegation of MPs and ministers headed by Sleiman began
a three-day visit to Armenia Wednesday and is to return to Beirut
this weekend.

“I held a lengthy discussion with President Serzh Sargsyan and we
discussed the means to strengthen the relations between our countries
and our people in different areas,” said Sleiman during a joint news
conference with Sargsyan, who presented Sleiman with the country’s
Medal of Honor.

“We also discussed the current regional and international
developments,” Sleiman added.

Speaking at the conference, Sleiman reiterated Lebanon’s full support
for stability in Armenia and the South Caucus region, which has seen
sporadic military conflict among Armenian and Azeri troops in the
past 17 years.

“I also reiterated to President Sargsyan that on the 20th anniversary
of Armenia’s independence, Lebanon would continue to stand by Armenia
and would support finding diplomatic solutions to conflicts that
persist with some of its neighbors … especially the ongoing conflict
over Nagorno-Karabagh,” said Sleiman in reference to an enclave in
Azerbaijan which has been occupied by Armenia since 1994.

Although internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijani territories,
Nagorno-Karabagh is a de facto independent state and is now controlled
by Nagorno-Karabagh Republic.

In a question and answer session with reporters, Sleiman said
that the Lebanese government would stand in support of the people
in Nagorno-Karabagh. “We hope that this conflict will be solved
based on international law and based on the right of the people to
self-determination,” Sleiman told reporters.

Earlier Friday Sleiman and the delegation, accompanied by Armenian
Foreign Affairs Minister Edward Nalbanian, visited the Tsitsernakaberd
Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan to honor the victims of 1915
Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.

There is no military solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,

“Peace talks should continue, and the conflict should be solved
peacefully,” Mr. Ismayil says, adding, “The parties should come to
an agreement and sign a peace treaty.”

Still the parties seem unwilling to find a possible way out. Each
side is not ready for a compromise solution and the recent meeting
have shown it, the expert admits.

This is a great win to the Republican Party. We place a high value on
full membership of RPA to EPP (European People’s Party), MP Karine
Achemyan told a Panorama.am reporter, commenting upon the granting
of the status of observer in EPP to RPA.

According to the parliamentarian, on the path to Europe, RPA’s
membership is a new platform for raising issues of importance to
Armenia.

“EPP attaches importance to cooperation with the Republican Party.

Members of EPP had confirmed this earlier in Armenia, during their
meetings with the RPA Women’s Council and RPA youth organization,”
Achemyan said.

She noted that EPP’s decision is evidence that RPA moves in the
right direction.

IMPLEMENTATION OF LUSTRATION BILL IMPORTANT TO REVEAL AZERBAIJANI SPIES IN ARMENIA – EXPERT

YEREVAN. – Bill on Lustration is important to reveal agents who
cooperated with Azerbaijani KGB during Soviet times, Armenian Center
for National and International Studies (ACNIS) expert Manvel Sargsyan
said at the discussion in the Civil National Initiative hall.

According to him, Armenians, who cooperated with Azerbaijan during
the Soviet Union and returned back to Armenia, may be blackmailed by
Azerbaijan and used against Armenia.

Participants of the discussion shared the thought. Moreover,
parliamentary Heritage group MP, co-author of the bill Styopa Safaryan
stated that the same links may run activity even working against
Armenia and its independence by advocating reestablishment of the
Soviet Union and joining to Russia.

Sargsyan added that there are still people in Artsakh
(Nagorno-Karabakh) who speak against its independence and may have
connection to Azerbaijani Secret Services.

Heritage party MP Larisa Alaverdyan, who put the bill into circulation,
stated that the high-leveled discussion was very useful.

She believes that it will assist in amending and strengthening
the bill.
