ACTIVISTS PROTEST RECENT RENOVATION OF GARNI BRIDGE – VIDEO

March 15, 2013 | 13:24

YEREVAN.- A group of citizens gathered near the building of Culture
Ministry on Friday demanding explanations concerning recent renovation
of historical Garni bridge.

The activists are confident that after being renovated the bridge lost
its cultural value, while Ministry officials are claiming the opposite.

The protestors talked to the Ministry officials who expressed readiness
to hold discussions and answer all questions.

The action was directed against illegal actions of the Ministry which
resulted in destroying the bridge, activists say. During renovation,
modern materials were made and currently no element of the historical
bridge has been preserved.

Moving Sale: Popular Trade Zone To Be Closed March 15

MOVING SALE: POPULAR TRADE ZONE TO BE CLOSED MARCH 15

Some two months prior to the city council elections in Yerevan passions
flare again among small proprietors and vendors who have been ordered
to wrap up their trade stalls.

At a central Abovyan-Isahakyan under-pass in Yerevan, where for years
numerous small boutiques and kiosks have been operating, as well as
the biggest book sale points have been located, all the shop-windows
are shut these days and the commodities are being packed tightly in
bags and boxes.

Right this time a year ago the dismantling process started of the
kiosks at the underpass, which raised the owners’ discontent. Back then
the word was that in 2010 (when current Transport and Communication
minister Gagik Beglaryan was the mayor of Yerevan) the area of 16
kiosks was given to Great Victoria company by city hall decree.

The kiosks were dismantled, and some of the owners moved to other
places to do their trade, but the construction never started, so
others just placed tables, put out their products and did their trade
to somehow earn their living.

A 41-year-old vendor Susanna Stepanyan, who has been dealing in
lingerie business for the past 20 years, told ArmeniaNow that
although for the two years now there have been talks about closing
the underpass, only this year on February 27 they were told to empty
the area.

“We asked to give us time at least after March 8 [International
Women’s Day], so March 15 is our deadline. We have been told that
the underpass will be closed and construction will start. We have
heard the construction will take 2 years and 8 months. But we have
not been told any definite terms,” says Stepanyan.

She assures that they have been diligent tax-payers, and 1 sq m of
area there was around 8,000 drams ($20).

Bookseller Gevorg Gevorgyan, who has been in that business for 15
years and has to leave the area, says he has turned to Prosperous
Armenia Party faction secretary Naira Zorhabyan for help.

“If one, two, three or four of us are forced to leave and work
separately, this market will not be viable, we cannot work, it was
due to our collective work, one relying on the other, that we have
been able to make it. That’s why we have turned for assistance to see
what happens,” says Gevorgyan, who adds that the number of booksellers
reaches 20.

Zohrabyan, whose party has serious ambitions to win power in Yerevan
in the upcoming elections, told ArmeniaNow that someone apparently
has purchased the territory to open another “facility”.

“Our City Council members will meet with the booksellers today in order
to hear their views and I myself will raise this issue in parliament,”
said Zohrabyan. She said that before municipal elections authorities
perhaps would agree to some concessions, but at the same time she
stressed that temporary solutions were unacceptable.

Deputy Head of the Public Relations Department at the Yerevan Mayor’s
Office Artur Sarukhanyan told ArmeniaNow that city authorities had
proposed to the booksellers to move to any of the two underpasses in
central Mashtots Avenue – either to the one near Margaryan Hospital
or St. Sargis Church, which are not in good condition facility-wise.

“When trade is organized there, the municipality will take care of
the sanitary condition of the underpasses, improve their exterior
and ensure proper lighting,” said Sarukhanyan.

Sultanik Arevshatyan, the chief architect of the underpass situated
at the intersection of Abovyan-Isahakyan streets (it opened in 1985)
says authorities had promised to inform him of any planned or expected
construction-related changes.

“This is a building that architecturally has world significance. Still
in 1986 it was considered to be the best architectural construction
of its kind in the USSR. There was time when foreigners were coming
[to Armenia] only to examine the structure. And I regret that things
have turned out this way for that structure,” the 87-year-old architect
told ArmeniaNow.

Iraq’s Dwindling Christian Population Faces Bleak Future

IRAQ’S DWINDLING CHRISTIAN POPULATION FACES BLEAK FUTURE

Churchgoers are fleeing the country in droves as Islamic extremists
step up deadly attacks

by Greg Watts

The slaughter of 52 people at a church in Baghdad last Sunday evening
when security forces stormed it in an attempt to rescue more than 100
worshippers taken hostage by al-Qaeda-linked terrorists is a reminder
of the deepening crisis facing Iraq’s dwindling Christian population.

The attack at Our Lady of Salvation Syrian Catholic church, which
also injured more than 60 worshippers, was the first on a church in
Baghdad since July 2009, when seven churches were bombed.

The Syrian Catholic Archbishop of Mosul, Georges Casmoussa, who was
kidnapped in 2005 and later released, said: “A few months ago some
families began returning to Baghdad. But now more Christians will
start to leave Baghdad to try to start a new life abroad.

“Shortly before the attack on Sunday there were more than 20 explosions
in the streets of Baghdad. The Government is not in charge of the
situation. The Government ended the siege at the church, yes, but at
what price?”

Since the US-led invasion of 2003, Islamic extremists have targeted
more than 60 churches across Iraq. In addition, several priests and
bishops have been killed. In 2008, after celebrating the stations
of the cross at the Chaldean Catholic cathedral in Mosul, Archbishop
Paulos Faraj Rahho was murdered when gunmen ambushed his car, snatching
him and killing his driver and two companions.

This wave of violence against Christians has badly damaged the close
relations that traditionally existed between Christians and Muslims,
said Archbishop Casmoussa.

“We have two kinds of relations between Christians and Muslims.

Relations between neighbours and families are good. But there is a
fear in the heart of Christians. We have had many official declarations
from Muslim leaders that we are brothers and share the same land. But
these speeches don’t create peace and tranquillity.

“We are not against Islam, but we are against those who manipulate
Islam for political ends. And many Muslims are against terrorism
and the manipulation of their religion. But there are extremists who
want to establish Islam as the state religion in Iraq. This is very
dangerous, not only for Iraq but also for the Middle East in general.”

Father Vincent Van Vossel, superior of the Redemptorists in Baghdad,
said: “Iraqi Christians are now terrified and in shock. They are
faced with a terrible dilemma: emigrate and save the lives of their
loved ones, or stay in the country and witness to faith, risking death.

“We are living something that is really terrible. There had never
been a massacre of such magnitude, all within a church during the
celebration of the holy Eucharist. I have visited the church and
listened to the testimonies of the faithful in shock. The terrorists
mercilessly killed women and children. The community is traumatised.

The church looked like a cemetery.”

Before the Gulf War in 1991 there were thought to have been about
1.5 million Christians in Iraq, most of them concentrated in and
around Baghdad and Mosul. Today estimates put the number at 400,000
to 500,000.

“In 2003 there were around 75,000 Syrian Catholics and 75,000 Syrian
Orthodox in Iraq. Since then, more than half have left. Many have
gone to Jordan, Syria, Lebanon or Turkey. Others have gone to the
United States, Australia or England,” said Archbishop Casmoussa.

According to the UN, 4,098 Christians fled Mosul between February
20 and 27 this year after the murder of eight Christians. These
attacks led Pope Benedict XVI to call on the international community
to do everything possible to give Iraqis a future of “reconciliation
and justice”.

The Pope has expressed alarm at the exodus of Christians not just
from Iraq but also from Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt and elsewhere
in the Arab world. This was why he held a Synod of Bishops for the
Middle East last month in the Vatican. The first event of its kind,
it ended just days before the massacre on Sunday evening. During the
two-week-long meeting, some Iraqi bishops had spoken of a deliberate
campaign to drive them out of their country.

Iraq is part of the land of the Bible, tracing its roots to the ancient
kingdoms of Mesopotamia, Assyria and Babylonia. The Book of Genesis
describes the Garden of Eden as being between Iraq’s two great rivers,
the Euphrates and the Tigris.

There has been a Christian population in Iraq since the first century.

Most Iraqi Christians are Chaldeans, Eastern-rite Catholics who are
autonomous from Rome but who recognise the Pope’s authority. The
Assyrian Church, which broke away from Rome in the 5th century,
is the second-largest Eastern-rite denomination. Other communities
include Syrian Catholic, Armenian Catholic, Latin Catholic and Syrian
Orthodox and Greek Orthodox and Evangelicals.

More than 70,000 Iraqi Christians have fled to the semi-autonomous
Kurdish-controlled region of northern Iraq, some settling in villages
abandoned or destroyed in the late 1980s, during attacks on Kurds by
Saddam Hussein.

A report in December 2009 by the Kurdistan Regional Government UK
Representation estimated that some 20,000 Christian families from
Basra, Baghdad and Mosul had settled in Dohuk, Erbil and in the
Ninevah plains, and thousands more in Suleimaniah.

The region is also home to Babel Catholic College of Theology and St
Peter’s Seminary, which the Chaldean Patriarchate transferred there
from Baghdad in 2007 in response to the growing threat to its members.

Suha Rassam, the author of Christianity in Iraq, and a founder of the
UK-based charity Iraqi Christians in Need, said that while the Kurdish
area is much safer, life is still difficult for Christians there.

“Pushing Christians to the safe haven in the north of Iraq is not
the answer. Many Christians don’t want to live there. They come from
large towns and have had professional jobs. There’s no work for them
in the north. There aren’t enough jobs or resources.”

Looking to the future, Archbishop Casmoussa admitted that if the
carnage and chaos continues, prospects for Christians in Iraq look
bleak.

“It’s difficult to be optimistic. We are called to hope and to build a
future together, but the Church is powerless when families are living
in fear,” he said plaintively.

“What do you say to a family which has had two or three of their
members killed?”

IRAN READY TO HELP RESOLVE NAGORNO-KARABAKH ISSUE DIPLOMATICALLY

Mehr News Agency (MNA), Iran
March 12, 2013 Tuesday

TEHRAN, March 12 (MNA) â- The Iranian ambassador to Armenia has
reiterated that the Islamic Republic is ready to help resolve the
Nagorno-Karabakh issue, which has dragged on since ethnic Armenian
forces took control of the region during a war in the early 1990s,
through diplomatic channels.

“If the countries involved in the dispute make a request, the Islamic
Republic of Iran is ready to help resolve it peacefully,” Ambassador
Mohammad Raeesi told the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency in
an interview published on Monday.

Both Azerbaijan and Armenia claim the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh,
which is mainly populated by Armenians but located in Azerbaijan.

Iran had earlier extended an offer to mediate between Armenia and
Azerbaijan in the dispute.

In April 2010, Manouchehr Mottaki, who was Iran’s foreign minister
at the time, presented a proposal for a trilateral meeting with
his Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts to attempt to resolve
the dispute.

prevent hunting in the partial reserve, “no entry” signs have been
set up in the area.

demonstrating the traces of poaching in Khosrov reserve. Afterwards
by the decision of the Nature Protection Minister, the director and
other employees of the reserve were dismissed.

Struggle Led By Raffi Hovannisian Sure To Produce Results

STRUGGLE LED BY RAFFI HOVANNISIAN SURE TO PRODUCE RESULTS

TERT.AM
13:42 ~U 13.03.13

Heritage party Vice-Chairman Armen Martirosyan believes that the
struggle led by Heritage party Chairman Raffi Hovannisian will produce
results and the elections to the Yerevan city council are only part
of this struggle.

Now, however, the Heritage party has focused on the national elections
rather than local election, however the latter is important.

As regards the proposal for resignation from Armenia’s parliament,
Mr Martirosyan said that all the opposition MPs’ resignation will
inevitably speed up the processes.

As to his view of his and Prosperous Armenia members being “at the same
level,” with numerous oligarchs being PAP members, Mr Martirosyan said:
“We are amid and with the people. So there is no problem. The Heritage
party has always been open to contacts. But the force that will be
amid the people will be acceptable to the people.”

“As to the benefits from Raffi Hovannisian’s meeting with PAP Chairman
Gagik Tsarukyan, we have stated that no inter-party struggle is going
to take place here [Freedom Square] – no Heritage, Dashnaktsutyun,
Prosperous Armenia, Republican party, but a national struggle and the
people. So we can only welcome any political forces that are ready
to join this struggle,” Mr Martirosyan said.

As to the rumors about a shadow cabinet headed by Raffi Hovannisian,
with Armen Martirosyan and Anahit Bakhshyan among the cabinet members,
Mr Martirosyan said that Mr Hovannisian, half in jest, called Ms
Bakhshyan “minister of education and science.” “I do not think we
are speaking of a shadow cabinet now,” he said.
