Surb Sargis Church cordoned by police, deacon Vahram’s clothes torn

Surb Sargis Church cordoned by police, deacon Vahram’s clothes torn off
by Tatevik Shahunyan

Saturday, July 20, 15:17

A tense situation has been created near the Surb Sargis Church
(Yerevan), which is the residence of Navasard Kchoyan, Head of the
Ararat Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

At the moment the church is cordoned by the police, ArmInfo’s
correspondent reports from the scene. The thing is that the members of
the Ararat Union of the Armenian Apostolic Church should have held a
protest action in front of the church at midday to support Ter Hakob
Khachatryan, ex-head of the Union, who was dismissed by the recent
decision of Navasard Kchoyan.

While preparing for the action, the members of the Ararat Union tried
to set up microphones, but the employees of Kchoyan’s chancellery were
trying to disturb them in every possible way. This developed into an
incident between Hayk Tadevosyan, the head of Kchoyan’s staff, and
deacon Vahram, representative of the Ararat Union. Tadevosyan attacked
deacon Vahram and tore off the deacon’s clothes.

To note, Kchoyan is reported to have dismissed Ter Hakob for the fact
that press photographer Gagik Shamshyan said in one of the TV
programs: “Ter Hakob is 1000 times as good as Navasard Kchoyan”.
According to media reports, this has caused Kchoyan’s discontent and
he dismissed Ter Hakob. However, the press service of the Ararat
Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church denies this version.

Navasard Kchoyan’s name is often mentioned in various suspicious
stories, for instance, in the offshore scandal with Prime Minister
Tigran Sargsyan. The public is also discontent with the fact that
Kchoyan’s jet-setting lifestyle is not becoming to a clergyman. To
recall, Kchoyan drives a Bentley.

ABMDR to Hold 2nd Annual `Walk of Life’

ABMDR to Hold 2nd Annual `Walk of Life’

14:34, 20 July, 2013

YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS: The New England Chapter of the Armenian
Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR) will host its second annual `Walk
of Life’ walk-a-thon on Sat., Sept. 28,in Watertown. As rpeorts
Armenpress referring to Armenian Weekly, funds raised from the walk
will support the instrumental work of the ABMDR, which helps Armenians
worldwide survive lifethreatening blood-related illnesses by
recruiting and matching donors to those requiring bone marrow stem
cell transplants.`Bone marrow transplanting procedures are now as
simple as a blood draw, and pose little or no pain, so raising funds
to recruit bone marrow donors is a key first step toward saving a
life,’ said ABMDR President Dr. Frieda Jordan.

The walk-a-thon will take participants on a 2.2-mile route that begins
at the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center (ACEC) on 47 Nichols
Ave., and concludes at the `Faire on the Square’ town celebration on
Main St., where participants can enjoy the festivities, including
local food, music, and dance.

`Every step taken during the walk-a-thon brings hope for a
long-awaited bone marrow match for a fellow Armenian struck with a
life-threatening disease like leukemia or other blood-related
illness. And since the unique genetic make-up of Armenians makes it
extremely difficult to find suitable bone marrow matches among the
existing international bone marrow donor registries, the ABMDR’s
database serves as a vital resource when crisis strikes,’ Jordan
explained.

`Whether you choose to walk or sponsor a walker with a monetary
contribution, you can make a huge difference in someone’s life, so
we`d like to urge the entire community to support this event.’ said
Alvart Badalian, the chair of the New England chapter of ABMDR.

To register for the walk-a-thon, sponsor a walker, or for more
information, interested individuals are encouraged to visit
or contact Tatoul Badalian by calling (617)
331-0426.

Established in 1999, ABMDR, a non-profit organization, helps Armenians
worldwide survive life-threatening blood-related illnesses by
recruiting and matching donors to those requiring bone marrow stem
cell transplants. To date, the registry has recruited over 22,000
donors in 17 countries across 4 continents; identified 2,135 patients;
and facilitated 16 bone marrow transplants.

Natural Gas Price Was Artificially Raised In Armenia – Ex-Presidenti

NATURAL GAS PRICE WAS ARTIFICIALLY RAISED IN ARMENIA – EX-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

July 19, 2013 | 12:26

YEREVAN. – The price of natural gas was artificially raised in Armenia
so that the cost of living may increase 1.5 times in the country.

Political scientist, former presidential candidate Andreas Ghukasyan
stated the aforesaid during a press conference on Friday.

Speaking about the causes of this rise, he noted that consumption
and collected taxes reduce when residents emigrate.

“In this way, they are restoring the damage which emigration causes
to the criminal oligarchic system,” Ghukasyan argued.

To note, the price of natural gas being supplied to Armenia increased
on July 7.

ARMENIE

Serge Sarkissian a

Associated Press International
July 17, 2013 Wednesday 1:37 PM GMT

DORTMUND Germany

Borussia Dortmund’s newly signed forward, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, will
be out for four weeks after injuring his ankle in a friendly.

The Bundesliga club says Mkhitaryan twisted his right ankle and
partially tore a tendon shortly after scoring the third goal in
Dortmund’s 4-1 win over FC Luzern in a friendly in Switzerland
on Tuesday.

Mkhitaryan has scored in both friendlies since joining Dortmund. The
Armenia international completed his transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk
last week and signed a four-year deal.

He was signed to replace Mario Goetze, who moved to Bayern Munich,
which beat Dortmund in the Champions League final.

Mkhitaryan could miss the Bundesliga season-opener on Aug. 10 against
Augsburg.

Baku Welcomes Offers To Help Settle Nagorno-Karabakh Dispute: FM

BAKU WELCOMES OFFERS TO HELP SETTLE NAGORNO-KARABAKH DISPUTE: FM

Press TV, Iran
July 18 2013

Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov says Baku welcomes proposals
from any country to help settle the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute between
Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Mammadyarov made the remarks at a Wednesday joint press conference
with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu in response to a question
about Iran’s offers to mediate in the dispute.

He, however, said that Azerbaijan wants the resolution of the conflict
“to start with the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the occupied
territories,” Azerbaijan Press Agency (APA) reported.

Both Azerbaijan and Armenia claim the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh,
which is largely populated by Armenians but located in Azerbaijan.

Ethnic Armenian forces took control over the enclave, which accounts
for 16 percent of Azerbaijan, in the early 1990s during a six-year
war with the country that took place from February 1988 to May 1994.

The conflict left an estimated 30,000 people dead and one million
others displaced before the two sides agreed to a cease-fire in 1994.

However, a peace accord has never been signed and the dispute still
remains unsettled.

Iran has on several occasions offered to mediate in the dispute.

“We believe that the Karabakh issue will be resolved through dialog
and the commitment of both sides to justice, and Tehran is ready to
negotiate with them within this framework,” Iran’s President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad said in a joint press conference with his Azeri counterpart
Ilham Aliyev in November, 2010.

On Wednesday, the Azeri foreign minister also expressed his country’s
dissatisfaction with the activity of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk
Group, saying Azerbaijan saw no improvement in the process of the
settlement.

“We would be so glad if any progress was achieved by the mediation of
these countries (OSCE Minsk Group) during this period, but we do not
see such a progress and surely are dissatisfied with the activity of
the co-chairs,” he added.

The OSCE Minsk Group was created in 1992 by the Conference on
Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE, now Organization for
Security and Co-operation in Europe [OSCE]) to help find a solution
to the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The Minsk Group is headed by a co-chairmanship consisting of France,
Russia and the United States, but it also includes participating
states of Belarus, Germany, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden,
Finland, Turkey as well as Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Chairman Menendez Issues Opening Statement At Nomination Hearing For

CHAIRMAN MENENADEZ ISSUES OPENING STATEMENT AT NOMINATION HEARING FOR SAMANTHA POWER TO SERVE AS US AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS

Congressional Documents and Publications
July 17, 2013 Wednesday

WASHINGTON, July 17 — Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman ,
John F. Kerry issued the following statement:

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee, delivered this opening statement, as prepared for delivery,
at today’s nomination hearing for Samantha Power to serve as Ambassador
to the United Nations. The statement follows:

“Good morning, Ms. Power. Welcome to the Foreign Relations Committee.

Your nomination as Ambassador to the United Nations has come with much
fanfare – and with some criticism, which – at the end of the day –
means you must be doing something right.

But – whether fanfare or criticism – I don’t believe anyone can
question your credentials. No one can question your service.

And, certainly, no one can question your willingness to speak your
mind – often forcefully, always passionately, and usually without
hesitation – and I commend you for your willingness to speak out on
human rights issues around the world, whether as a war correspondent
in Bosnia, in the former Yugoslavia, in Rwanda and Sudan where you –
as you said in your Pulitzer Prize winning book on genocide – witnessed
“evil at its worst.”

You have been an unrelenting, principled voice when it comes to human
rights and crimes against humanity – and I know that voice will be
heard around the world – should you be confirmed.

Personally, I am incredibly appreciative of the principled position
you’ve taken on the Armenian Genocide. In 2007, you wrote in Time
Magazine – “a stable, fruitful, 21st century relationship” [with
Turkey] “cannot be built on a lie,” and I completely agree.

Your belief that we should use the lessons of what clearly was an
atrocity of historic proportions to prevent future crimes against
humanity is a view consistent with my own and which is supported by
your role on the President’s Atrocities Prevention Board.

I agree that we must acknowledge and study the past, understand how
and why atrocities happen, to put-into-practice and giving meaning
to the phrase, “never again.”

As the son of immigrants from Cuba, one whose family and friends bore
witness to, suffered – and continue to suffer – under the Castro
regime’s oppression, I personally appreciate your commitment to
exposing the Castro dictatorship’s total disregard for human and civil
rights and for not idealizing the harsh realities of communism in Cuba.

I know from the conversation we had in my office that you appreciate
the suffering of the Cuban people – the torture, abuse, detention
and abridgment of the civil and human rights of those who voice
their dissent.

I also welcomed your commitment to reach out to Rosa Maria Paya,
daughter of the long-time dissident and Cuban activist, Oswaldo Paya
who died under mysterious circumstances last year in Cuba.

Ms. Paya is in Washington this week accepting a posthumous award
from the National Endowment for Democracy on behalf of another young
activist from Cuba who died alongside Oswaldo Paya, making your
commitment to reach out to her that-much-more timely.

I share your view that we should not lose sight of these moral issues
even as we address the pressing economic and security issues that
confront our nation.

It is fitting that you will be at the United Nations, which was
created after a period of atrocity and conflict with the goal of
bringing nations together to achieve peace and stability.

In the words of the UN Preamble, it was created “to reaffirm faith in
fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person,
in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small…”

If confirmed your focus at the United Nations will – no doubt – be
on the crisis du jour – the Middle East, Syria, Iran, North Korea,
Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, increasingly on North Africa, and
the nature of nations that emerge from the Arab Spring but I would
encourage you to also keep your focus and task your staff to watch
what is happening off the front page as well as on it.

What may be happening on freedom of expression in Latin America;
fighting HIV/AIDS, malaria and polio in Africa; on the status of talks
to resolve the 66 yearlong question of Cyprus; on women’s rights in
Pakistan; labor rights in Bangladesh, and human rights in Sri Lanka.

The UN for all its faults also has a great ability, to serve as
arbitrator – a neutral fact-finder – and overseer of peace.

I urge you to harness its strengths in the interests of our nation
and – not coincidentally – in the interest of fulfilling the stated
purpose of the UN – “to unite our strength to maintain international
peace and security.”

We will address these issues, among many others, in our questioning,
but let me to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Committee
and to say that we look forward to a full and frank dialogue on the
issues you will face should you be confirmed.

Let me also say – for the record – that if there are additional
questions for the record of this nominee, they should be submitted
by 5:00 PM today.

With that, let me turn to Senator Corker for his opening remarks.”
