Reverend Fred Nile defends the ‘right to memory’ as NSW Government
considers its response to Gallipoli ban

Michael Sweet

With the Turkish Government describing witness accounts of the
Armenian, Assyrian and Greek genocides written by WWI Australian
soldiers as fabrications, NSW MP Reverend Fred Nile has spoken out
condemning the allegation.

Mr Nile moved the original motion recognising the genocides that
was unanimously adopted by the NSW Parliament in May, much to the
consternation of Turkey – who as a result, threatened to ban the
state’s parliamentarians from visiting Gallipoli.

Premier Barry O’Farrell last week described recent comments made by
NSW’s Turkish Consul General on the matter, as “a terrible indictment
… of the freedom that was fought for on the Gallipoli Peninsula
in 1915”.

The Consul, Ms Gulseren Celik, said in a letter to state parliament
that accounts of the Ottoman genocides by Australian soldiers based
in Anatolia at the time were fabricated.

In a speech to the NSW Parliament last week Reverend Nile reaffirmed
the validity of the accounts, quoting from verified historical sources,
including documents from official Anzac records.

Reverend Nile said the crux of the debate was “the individual and
collective right to memory”, and said that Turkey’s allegations that
his actions were an incitement to hate were baseless.

“Is it recalling hatreds, real or imagined, to commemorate the Shoah,
the Jewish genocide, or Timorese or Papuan suffering under the Japanese
in World War II?” said Mr Nile.

“Historical debate often involves offence being taken by individuals,
especially when entrenched positions are being undermined.”

Mr Nile told Neos Kosmos he was shocked by the Turkish Consul’s
description of Anzac records as fabrications, and that the NSW
Government was looking at a number of options in order to respond to
Turkey’s threat to ban parliamentarians from Gallipoli.

“We should not forget these genocides happened, to ignore them as
historical fact is kicking the relatives and survivors of subsequent
generations,” he said.

Having recently returned from a tour of Armenia with a cross-party
delegation, Reverend Nile said Australia’s Foreign Minister Bob Carr
should intervene in the situation.

“It’s disappointing that the Federal Government seems to be acting
in a cowardly way, and the threats from Turkey are having an effect
on our Federal Government. It’s ridiculous,” said Mr Nile.

“The government should do what’s right and what’s truthful, and not
be blackmailed.”

Twenty-one countries around the world have passed formal resolutions
recognising the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek genocides by the Ottoman
empire. Along with Australia, Britain and the United States have not,
although 43 US states have.

Consul Gulseren Celik told reporters she is confident the Australian
Government has no intention of following what she describes as the
“outrageous” NSW motions.

Armenia Set To Join Russia-Led Customs Union In Blow To EU

ARMENIA SET TO JOIN RUSSIA-LED CUSTOMS UNION IN BLOW TO EU

EuroNews, France
Sept 4 2013

04/09 18:35 CET

Armenia is turning its back on Europe with a decision to join a
Russia-led customs union.

The country is going with its former soviet master instead of signing
up to a European free trade agreement – dealing a blow to the EU’s
Eastern Partnership policy.

The decision came after Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan met with
his counterpart Vladimir Putin.

“We have exchanged opinions on issues of Eurasian integration,”
said Sargsyan.

“And I confirmed Armenia’s wish to enter the customs union and to
join the process of forming of the Eurasian Economic Union.”

If all goes to plan, Armenia will join not only join Russia in the
union, but also Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Charles Tannock, a British Conservative MEP, said Russia had been using
“extreme bullying tactics” with its neighbours.

“I understand that the President of Armenia went to Moscow, was
summoned by President Putin, and told that if he went ahead with his
euro-atlantic aspirations, in terms of getting closer to the EU by
having this free trade agreement, that would be the end of Russian
security guarantees,” he said.

Armenia’s decision is a political boost for Putin, who is struggling
to stop Ukraine from turning towards the European Union.

Anonymous Leaks Information On Leading Azerbaijan Energy Company

ANONYMOUS LEAKS INFORMATION ON LEADING AZERBAIJAN ENERGY COMPANY

SC Magazine
Sept 4 2013

A group claiming to be an Armenian branch of hacker collective
Anonymous has leaked 7 GB worth of documents relating to Azerenergy,
the leading energy producer in the Eurasian country of Azerbaijan.

Financial details, offshore communications, contracts, research and
photos of passports are among the documents that have been leaked,
with the group adding “illegal schemes” to the mix in an announcement
posted Tuesday afternoon to cyberguerilla.org – a forum designed to
maintain anonymity.

The entire multi-gigabyte package was broken into 13 parts and hosted
on AnonFiles.com, an anonymous file- hosting website unrelated to
the similarly named hacker collective.

“We are not that very much happy with Aliev’s politics therefore
this release is just another leap in a series of releases to fight
Azerbaijani mafia clans,” the group wrote in its post, indicating
there would be more to come.

An Azerenergy representative could not immediately be reached for
comment.

Ilham Aliyev is the president of Azerbaijan since 2003 and in a U.S.

Embassy diplomatic cable posted to WikiLeaks in 2009 he was compared
to mafia figures. According to a EurasiaNet.org article, Aliyev is
unbending with regard to domestic political diversity and, according
to the WikiLeaks document, the 10-year Azerbaijan leader has a
“dual-nature” whose U.S. interests contradict U.S. values.

“HELP AZERBAIJAN FREE OF POLITICAL TERROR AND DICTATORSHIP,” the
group wrote in its post.

This is the second time this year that an Azerbaijan organization
has suffered an information leak by a group claiming to be Anonymous.

In April, a group calling itself Anonymous leaked 1.5 GB of data from
the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the
Republic of Azerbaijan. The group called attention to ties between
various corporations and government agencies that were said to have
financed terror groups.

Anonymous continues to make headlines – most recently in July for three
consecutive releases of lists of FEMA contacts – but the collective has
remained under the radar in recent time due to a number of high-profile
arrests by the FBI.

Among those FBI arrests are key members of Anonymous splinter group
Lulz Security, as well as distributors of the Gozi virus, who are
not said to be associated with Anonymous. The Gozi virus infected
millions of computers and stole millions of dollars from financial
institutions around the globe.

The Historic Price Of Individualism

THE HISTORIC PRICE OF INDIVIDUALISM

By Edmond Y. Azadian

Why do Armenians gravitate away from their native land and live in
far-away countries, overwhelmed with the nostalgia of the ancestral
homeland? We seldom pose the question to ourselves and when we do,
we always have cop-outs: we blame our neighbors, curse our conquerors
and decry our enemies.

It is true, history has treated the Armenian people very harshly,
for a number of reasons. As we try to enumerate or analyze those
reasons, it never occurs to us to assess our own responsibility in
shaping our destiny as one of the oldest nations on the planet. If
one day we decide to delve into our own responsibility, perhaps we
will begin to soberly plan our future.

The reason Armenian have not been able to become a dominant nation
– except during Tigranes II reign in the first century BC – is our
individualism. Individualism denotes self-reliance, self definition,
independence and all the other positive attributes. But when contrasted
with the collective will, catastrophe ensues.

Because of various depravations, victimizations and constant foreign
domination, Armenians have developed a very strong individualist
trait, which has always been in conflict with collective discipline,
nation-building and focus on a common future. That is how they have
survived through all the adversities of history.

During the dark ages, individualism was suppressed especially through
religion, where eyes and hopes were diverted away from the individual
to the sublime and to heaven, which religious leaders conveniently
used to consolidate their hegemony over their subjects. It is no
wonder that kings and rulers claimed divine lineage to legitimize
their power over the masses.

The lay rulers and the clergy used and abused their absolute power
over people, suppressing any expression of individual ideas.

The Inquisition in Europe punished any deviation from the church
doctrine harshly. People were denied independent thinking, facing
torture and burning at the stake. The famous victims of such
intolerance were Galileo and Giordano Bruno.

With the emergence of the Renaissance, society’s focus shifted towards
the individual. And later, fueled by the Industrial Revolution,
the individual came to control his or her destiny and enjoy life’s
blessings without inhibitions.

Europe eventually came to balance individualism versus collective will,
thus developing empires to control the peoples and resources of other
continents. As individuals negotiated the limits of their freedoms
with the imperatives of national consensus, powerful governments were
formed, without compromising individual liberties.

Nationalism became the glue to hold together the individuals. The
French philosopher Voltaire became the proponent of individual freedoms
within the parameters of collective will. He encapsulated that concept
succinctly when he said, “Your freedom ends where my nose begins.”

Armenians pride themselves that the Renaissance dawned in Armenia
before Europe. Gregory of Narek’s poetry is considered a watershed
in that development. Indeed, the poet, in his supplications to the
Supreme Power, dwells on the frailties of the individual, imploring
divine forgiveness or help. In the Book of Lamentations, Gregory of
Narek outlines human desires and forbidden urges within the confines
of his prayers, with a poetic craft unsurpassed for many centuries.

This individualism in Armenia always developed within the context
of foreign domination, which made the survival of the individual
questionable most of the time. Every Armenian developed his
individualism at the expense of his fellow Armenians, always losing
the collective perspective.

The contrast was stark during the Ottoman years. As the majority of the
Armenians suffered in the provinces, Amiras and the privileged class
of Armenians lived in affluence in Constantinople and other urban
centers. They served the Sultan, who sometimes used them to exploit
fellow Armenians in the provinces by assigning them tasks such as tax
collection, which was performed most of the time with a whip crashing
on the back of the Armenian peasant, to please the Sublime Porte.

The class of Armenian Amiras were completely detached from the
aspirations of the Armenian masses living in the hinterlands. Today
the Armenian Amiras are remembered in Istanbul because they were able
to secure some favors from the Sultan to build churches and schools
in Istanbul.

Individualism among the Armenians sometimes is expressed in the form
of factionalism. Indeed, with a very primitive concept of patriotism,
Armenian volunteers in the Russian army refused to fight under
General Antranik, as the Russian army relinquished its conquests,
heading home and leaving the fortress of Kars defenseless towards the
end of World War I. Food, ammunitions and clothing were abandoned,
but the Armenian volunteers refused to defend the fortress of Kars,
stating that Kars was not part of their homeland and our national
hero left the front, despondent.

After World War I, as Ataturk was able to hold together a defeated
country through diplomacy bordering on hypocrisy, Armenians
jeopardized their first republic, created after six centuries of
foreign domination. Granted, perhaps Armenia’s fate was doomed as
Ataturk and Lenin were trying to outmatch each other, but our perpetual
infighting also contributed to the demise of the First Republic. As a
result of the February uprising, tens of thousands of young Armenians
killed each other on top of the 1.5 million victims at the hands of
the Turks.

The Soviet era proved to be one of the darkest chapters of human
history. It was as if the Catholic Inquisition had returned with a
vengeance, with an atheistic twist. On top of the loss of the entire
leadership and intellectual class of Western Armenians, a new crop
of literary talents fell victim to Stalin’s atrocities.

The Soviet Union was a huge prison. Personality and individualism
were sacrificed for the collective. The new philosophy called for
the creation of the new man, the Soviet citizen.

Despite all adversities and casualties, the Soviet system proved to
be a blessing in disguise for the Armenians. Travel bans contributed
to the development of the demographics in Armenia with immigration
from the Balkans and the Middle East. If only forced attachment to
land could keep Armenians in the native homeland. That stability in
turn contributed to the tremendous development of science, literature
and music, beginning a new golden age in Armenian history.

Today, all that was created during the Soviet era is being blown to
four winds and Armenians are leaving their country at a rapid pace.

Azeris are waiting at the gate and they have already concocted a
history that Armenians are sitting on Azeri land.

If this time around we lose the second republic, that will be the
historic price we pay for Armenian individualism.

ANCA Voices Opposition To U.S. Strikes Against Syria

ANCA VOICES OPPOSITION TO U.S. STRIKES AGAINST SYRIA

ANCA opposes US strikes against Syria

Urges Congress to Oppose Legislation Authorizing Escalation of
Violence; Launches ANCA SmartMail Campaign to Share Armenian American
Community Concerns

WASHINGTON-The Armenian National Committee of America, citing the
Armenian American community’s profound concern for the fate of Syria’s
Armenian population and the welfare of all of Syria’s citizens,
circulated letters Wednesday across Capitol Hill calling on Members
of the U.S. House and Senate to oppose legislation authorizing U.S.

strikes against Syria.

“As our nation’s elected representatives gather this week to consider
potential U.S. actions against Syrian targets, we wish to add our
voice, as Americans of Armenian heritage, to those of our fellow
citizens who oppose American military strikes and are against any
escalation of violence. Such an escalation would very likely create
further challenges and lead to serious additional harm to Christian
communities, including Syria’s Armenian minority,” said ANCA Chairman
Ken Hachikian in letters to U.S. legislators. “We take this stand
mindful of the horrific human suffering that armed conflict has
already visited across Syria, including the death and destruction
being endured, to this day, by Armenians and other Christian
communities. There has already been too much bloodshed, too much
brutality, and too much suffering. An escalation in aggression can
neither save lives nor help bring about peace.”

The ANCA message went on to stress that, “We believe that the
advancement of our national interests, the enhancement of U.S.

standing, the strengthening of the international rule-of-law system,
and the promotion of stability and humanitarian and democratic
values in this vital region, will not be facilitated by American
attacks. We look to our government to seek a diplomatic settlement,
and to reinforce our nation’s call upon all parties to cease any
attacks on civilians, to limit armed operations to military targets,
and to refrain from violence, intimidation, and discrimination against
Christians and other vulnerable minorities.”

As a follow up to longstanding ANCA advocacy for effective, needs-based
delivery of humanitarian aid to Armenian and all at-risk populations,
Hachikian noted that Armenian Americans “remain troubled that,
despite the expenditure of hundreds of millions of dollars, serious
gaps remain in terms of U.S.-supplied and funded relief aid actually
reaching at-risk Armenian and other minority populations, in Aleppo
and throughout Syria.”

He added that ” Equally troubling has been the very limited U.S.

support for landlocked and blockaded Armenia’s efforts to support
and resettle thousands fleeing the Syria crisis. We urge you, in
cooperation with your colleagues and our community (which is very
actively engaged in relief efforts), to work with the Administration
to urgently address these shortcomings.”

An action alert, based on the ANCA website, provides an opportunity
for community members to send a similar message to their U.S.

Representatives and Senators.

Raffi Hovanisian: Self-Proclaimed Governor Serzh Sargsyan Must Leave

RAFFI HOVANISIAN: SELF-PROCLAIMED GOVERNOR SERZH SARGSYAN MUST LEAVE
by Ashot Safaryan

ARMINFO
Wednesday, September 4, 18:43

Self-proclaimed governor Serzh Sargsyan must leave, says Leader of
Heritage Party in his official statement. He harshly criticizes the
decision to join the Customs Union that was adopted t in Moscow,
Tuesday.

After the well-known anti-state protocols (between Armenia and Turkey
-ed.), stolen election results, total repression of civic movements,
and now the lonely decision against our sovereignty, the only way
out is still Sargsyan’s ouster, Hovannisian says.

He calls for combined efforts of the concerned citizens in Armenia
and Diaspora to form a united nation-wide front.

“He (Sargsyan) must leave the president’s post for our future, our
independence, justice and national security,” Hovannisian says.

Eurointegration May Make Armenia Lose Its Agriculture, Ruling Party

EUROINTEGRATION MAY MAKE ARMENIA LOSE ITS AGRICULTURE, RULING PARTY MP SAYS

YEREVAN, September 4. /ARKA/. Signing of the agreement about
association and agreement on deep and all-embracing free trade
zone by Armenia will make the country lose its agriculture, member
of parliament from the Republican Party of Armenia, head of the
Constitutional Rights Union Hayk Babukhanyan said.

A study by ECORYS analytical organizations who is an official partner
to the EU, Armenia will completely lose its agriculture and will
have its rural production reduced by 30% and its agriculture imports
doubled, Babukhanyan told a press conference Tuesday.

As a consequence, emigration from Armenia will grow, which is,
according to Babukhanyan, for the benefit of the European Union
interested in labor migrants from Eastern Europe and post-Soviet
countries.

In November 2013, an EU leaders summit will be held in Vilnius to
discuss Eastern Partnership and initialing of the agreement on free
trade zone with several countries, including Armenia.

The aim of the Eastern Partnership program is rapprochement between
the EU and Ukraine, Armenia, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Belarus.

Under the program, political counteraction, integration level and
financial support are to be increased. -0–

Armenia Can Combine EU, Customs Union, EurAsEC Partnership: Expert

ARMENIA CAN COMBINE EU, CUSTOMS UNION, EURASEC PARTNERSHIP: EXPERT

September 4, 2013 – 12:12 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – A Russian political expert commented on Armenia’s
decision to join the Customs Union, with further plans to be involved
in formation of EurAsEC.

“Armenia’s decision came as unexpected in the light of statements
suggesting oncoming Armenia-EU association agreement, as well as expert
opinions implying Armenia’s choice in favor of the EU, in political,
economic as well as national security aspects,” Alexander Krylov
told PanARMENIAN.Net

“Now, the ‘goodbye Russia’ theme has been replaced with a ‘goodbye
Eurointegration’ one in Armenian media,” the expert said, however,
advising against rash conclusions.

The expert believes that Armenia will implement a complementary policy,
with the latter quite admissible to Moscow, “although it’s clear that
coordination of the interests of the EU and Russia, as well as the
Customs Union and the EurAsEC won’t be an easy task.”

“At the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit, Armenian leadership will
need to persuade our Western partners that the complementary policy
won’t harm their interests.

Should Armenia succeed, the ‘goodbye Europe’ scenario can be cancelled,
enabling the country to pursue partnership with the EU while involved
in the Customs Union and EurAsEC,” the expert said.

Earlier, Armenia expressed intention to join Customs Union with
further plans to be involved in formation of EurAsEC.

Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the initiative, voicing
readiness to assist Armenia in the process.

He also noted that Russian Railways may invest 15 billion rubles in
development of Armenia’s railway network.

The Customs Union was formed in 2010 to include of Belarus, Kazakhstan,
and Russia; Kirghizia and Tajikistan later expressed willingness to
join the Union.
