CWN – October 04, 2013

>From Our Store: Liturgical Year 2012-2013, Vol. 6: Ordinary Time
Completed (eBook) At the conclusion of a recent synod, the Armenian
Apostolic Church announced that it approved “in principle” the
“collective canonization” of the victims of the Armenian Genocide,
which took place in 1915 and claimed an estimated 1.5 million victims.

Father Georges Dankaye, rector of the Pontifical Armenian College,
told the Fides news agency that the Armenian Apostolic Church has
not conducted any canonizations since the sixth century.

The Armenian Apostolic Church, which ceased to be in communion with the
Holy See following the Council of Chalcedon in 451, has six million
members; the Armenian Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic church in
full communion with the Holy See, has 375,000 members.

Spielberg Honors Clooney For Humanitarian Work

SPIELBERG HONORS CLOONEY FOR HUMANITARIAN WORK

The Associated Press State & Local Wire
October 4, 2013 Friday 5:21 AM GMT

By JOCELYN NOVECK, AP National Writer
NEW YORK

Steven Spielberg and George Clooney go way back in show business. In
fact, it was Spielberg who gave Clooney his big break on the TV show
“ER,” the actor recalls.

But the two Hollywood heavyweights came together Thursday evening for
a different reason: Spielberg was honoring Clooney for his humanitarian
work around the globe, especially in the Darfur region of Sudan.

At a glittery fundraising gala in the vast “Whale Room” at New York’s
Museum of Natural History, the director and his USC Shoah Foundation
presented Clooney with its Ambassador for Humanity Award. Also on
hand to praise Clooney were his co-star in the new movie “Gravity,”
Sandra Bullock, and Jon Stewart of “The Daily Show.”

“George is the best kind of humanitarian,” Spielberg said. “The humble
humanitarian.” The director called Clooney “an unparalleled example
of action over apathy.”

Clooney told the crowd of donors that “Our job is to make it hard
for the bad guys to do what they’re doing, and for the good guys to
ignore it.”

The actor also praised Spielberg for his foundation’s work in creating
and preserving video testimonies of Holocaust victims for future
generations to learn from.

“We have to be able to keep a record of what the powerful can do to
the powerless,” Clooney said.

The gala marked the 20th anniversary of Spielberg’s Holocaust movie
“Schindler’s List,” a film that won the director an Oscar and,
Spielberg says, gave him the idea to start a foundation that would
record interviews with Holocaust survivors. To date, the foundation,
founded in 1994 and based since 2006 at the University of Southern
California, has collected nearly 52,000 eyewitness testimonies on
video, in what it calls the largest digital collection of its kind
in the world.

In an interview before the gala, Spielberg explained that a new,
broader phase of the foundation’s work, begun recently, involves
collecting video testimonies from survivors of genocide in places
like Rwanda, Cambodia, and Armenia. “The origins of hatred haven’t
gone away,” the director said. The foundation has already begun its
work with testimony from Rwanda. The other countries will follow.

Spielberg said the only obstacle to further broadening the foundation’s
work is funding, and the group announced during the evening that the
gala had raised close to $3.7 million.

A further goal, Spielberg said in the interview, was to get the
country’s public school systems to teach tolerance education. The
director said his foundation is working on getting materials to
schools to be used in social science classes.

He noted that Holocaust survivors are fast dying out, an even more
important reason to preserve their life stories on video video that
can be catalogued and indexed for easy access, which now makes up
for much of the foundation’s work.

“The survivor community is vanishing,” he said. “Soon, it will only
exist in cyberspace. But it’s a powerful community. We hope that
through these testimonies, the survivors can live forever.”

Spielberg himself did not have relatives who died in the Holocaust.

But his grandmother helped Hungarian Jews who had fled the Holocaust
learn English in the United States. As a three-year old, he says,
he learned his numbers from the “Auschwitz tattoo” of one of the
survivors who gathered regularly in his home.

While making “Schindler’s List,” he said, he met survivors who would
come to him and want to tell him their stories, starting from when
they were children. “They just wanted me to listen,” he said. “They
didn’t want to talk to their children about it. The fact that they
wanted to tell a complete stranger what they couldn’t tell a daughter
or son really moved me.”

Representatives Of Ruling RPA To Meet An Opposition Member Of Parlia

REPRESENTATIVES OF RULING RPA TO MEET AN OPPOSITION MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT ZARIU POSTANJAN IN THE AIRPORT WITH EGGS AND TOMATOES

by Tatevik Shahunyan

ARMINFO
Friday, October 4, 12:48

The scandalous question given by an MP from the opposition Heritage
party, Zarui Postanjan, to President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan at
PACE session in Strasbourg caused a stormy resonance in Armenia.

As the parliamentary sources told Arminfo, Zarui Postanjan was slagged
off not only by the ruling but also the opposition forces. She was not
supported by her party members either. When meeting the speaker of the
parliament, Hovik Abrahamyan, the head of the Heritage parliamentary
faction, Ruben Hakopyan, did not even try to protect Postanjan.

Moreover, he said that he will have a talk with her after her arrival
to Armenia.

However, according to the same sources, representatives of the youth
wing of RPA are going to meet Postanjan at the airport with eggs and
tomatoes. They gave Postanjan different Turkish and Azerbaijani names
hinting at her link with the Turkish and Azerbaijani lobby.

When commenting on the decision by the speaker of the parliament Hovik
Abrahamyan on Postanjan’s removal from the Armenian delegation to
PACE, vice-speaker of the parliament, Edward Sharmazanov, said that
the decision was not adopted in a blaze of anger, as “anger is not
a political category”. He said that the decision is right if we take
into consideration the fact that Zarui Posyanjan has lost a sense of
proportion which is inadmissible for a politician.

To recall, rmenian opposition MP Zaruhi Postanjyan asked Armenian
President Serzh Sargsyan at PACE on Wednesday how he paid the 70mln
EUR he recently lost in a casino in Europe. Sargsyan said that he
has never been in a casino and does not play gambling games. He added
that he is not as lucky as to have 70mln EUR. “If I had such money,
I would give part of it to you,” he said to Postanjyan.

Expert Blog: Mediators Couldn’t Recover After ‘Kazan Setback’

EXPERT BLOG: MEDIATORS COULDN’T RECOVER AFTER ‘KAZAN SETBACK’

Friday,
October
04

When responding to questions of MPs following his speech in the PACE,
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan touched upon the negotiating process
on Karabakh settlement, disclosing some details.

That Azerbaijan ruined the meeting in Kazan was known as long ago as
June 2011, but the fact that Azerbaijan ‘approved’ the Madrid document
in 2008 raises some questions. The fact is Azerbaijan has long said
that he doesn’t know what document is being talked about. Moreover,
instead of expressing its official position in response to the
proposals, Azerbaijan has declared since 2007 that Armenia didn’t
accept the submitted proposals.

Yet Armenia expressed its positive position on the document shortly
after the presentation of the Madrid Proposals. And approval of that
document means that the given side deems it possible to resolve the
conflict based on these principles.

So it turns out that even at the time when Azerbaijan accepted
the documents at meeting with the mediators, it avoided voicing its
official position publicly. The reason is that the conflict resolution
in the document was based on a number of principles, two of which
‘irritated’ Azerbaijan. The matter concerns the principles of peoples’
right to self-determination and non-use of force or threat of force.

The only principle that ‘satisfied’ Azerbaijan was territorial
integrity, on which the propaganda policy of Azerbaijan is constructed.

By the way, according to the established ‘rules of game’, these three
principles and the six published elements form a single whole and
their separation is doomed to fail.

In any case, prior to the Kazan meeting Azerbaijan assured the
mediators that he saw no obstacles to signing of the document on
the fundamental principles, assuming it as a basis, and continuing
the negotiations, but in Kazan, Azerbaijan not only rejected the
agreements, while putting forward ten new proposals, but also tried to
dissociate itself from the document being negotiated on for 3-4 years.

2007-2011 were quite active years in terms of negotiations – in
parallel with efforts of the mediators, trilateral meetings of the
presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia were held with the
mediation of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Of course, after the Kazan meeting, Azerbaijan tried to ‘put up
resistance’ and find a way out of the situation, but everything was so
obvious that even Azerbaijan’s ‘super efforts’ could not substantiate
its behavior in Kazan. Yet the severest blow was delivered to the
mediators who could not recover for a long time, although the political
line of Azerbaijan was clear to Armenia initially.

It becomes clear from the Armenian president’s statements in the
PACE that no new document has been presented to the sides since the
Kazan meeting.

Le Parti Dirigeant Gagne Une Election Parlementaire Partielle

LE PARTI DIRIGEANT GAGNE UNE ELECTION PARLEMENTAIRE PARTIELLE

ARMENIE

Cela explique pourquoi Karapetian a obtenu

No Sound Opposition In Armenia – Former Opposition Bloc Member

NO SOUND OPPOSITION IN ARMENIA – FORMER OPPOSITION BLOC MEMBER

October 03, 2013 | 13:16

YEREVAN. – The policy that is conducted in Armenia indicates that
there is no sound [political] opposition in the country.

Opposition bloc Armenian National Congress former member Yerjanik
Abgaryan stated the aforesaid during a press conference on Thursday.

Abgaryan also spoke about the civil society in the country.

“The civic movement in Armenia unconsciously, involuntarily serves
the [country’s] authorities. [The civic movement] is a just, an
important matter. But now when the matter of the country’s future
is being resolved, it diverts the attention; that is why they [i.e.,
the authorities] are encouraging [it].

“Environmental and other matters are carried out with the civic
movement, but the policy does not change; it is ruled out,” Yerjanik
Abgaryan stated, in particular.
