KHATCHIK KHACHATRYAN : ” MA PLACE EST EN FRANCE ”

EXPULSIONS

Khatchik Khachatryan, dix-neuf ans, a été expulsé vers l’Arménie

Khatchik Khachatryan. Les activités politiques de mon père avaient

partir.

Prof. Shemmassian Lectures On Musa Dagh At University Of Minnesota

PROF. SHEMMASSIAN LECTURES ON MUSA DAGH AT UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013

Dr. Vahram Shemmassian

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-Professor Vahram Shemmassian, Director of
the Armenian Studies Program at the California State University,
Northridge, was invited by the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis
to deliver this year’s Arsham & Charlotte Ohanessian Chair Lecture on
Thursday, October 17. The event, which was cosponsored by the College
of Liberal Arts, the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS),
and the Center for Austrian Studies with its Interim Director Prof.

Klaas van der Sanden coordinating, took place at the President’s Room,
Coffman Memorial Union.

In his opening remarks Prof. Alejandro Baer, Director of the CHGS,
underscored the collaboration of the Center with the Twin Cities
(Minneapolis and St. Paul) Armenian community, citing as example
the commemoration of the Armenian Genocide conjointly last April. In
turn, Interim Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Dr. Raymond Duvall
emphasized the importance of defending human rights and the historical
truth of the Armenian Genocide. He then introduced the guest speaker.

Prof. Shemmassian’s lecture dealt with “The Musa Dagh Resistance to
the Armenian Genocide and Its Impact through Franz Werfel’s Historical
Novel The Forty Days of Musa Dagh.” This was a fitting tribute to
the 80th anniversary of the book’s original German publication in 1933.

Armenians lived in Musa Dagh, a mountain situated some 10 miles to
the southwest of the biblical city of Antioch and overlooking the
Mediterranean Sea, since time immemorial. On the eve of World War I
they numbered over 6,000 persons. When served the deportation order
by the Ottoman government in late July 1915, their two-third decided
to resist while one-third was deported, mainly to the Syrian city of
Hama and environs. Those who defied the government were rescued by
French warships after more than forty days of fighting and transported
to Port Said, Egypt. They lived in a refugee camp for four years,
until their repatriation to Musa Dagh in 1919.

In the days and months following the rescue operations the
international press covered the Musa Dagh resistance through news
items, communiques, leading articles, and photographs. As a result,
donations of money, clothing, and other necessities were sent to
the Port Said refugee camp by people of various nationalities,
organizations, and agencies. In short, the Musa Dagh Armenians
were lionized, became a source of inspiration, and drew sympathy in
practical terms as well.

The Musa Dagh saga, once its immediacy vanished, would probably
have been relegated to oblivion had it not been for the pen of one
man-Franz Werfel (1890-1945). Werfel, a Jew born in Prague and residing
in Vienna, had learned about the Armenian atrocities during World War
I and had promised himself that he would write a novel about them. He
kept his promise. While conducting extensive research on the subject
beginning in 1929, he came across the uplifting story of Musa Dagh,
which he chose as the novel’s topic. The Forty Days of Musa Dagh, as
he titled his oeuvre, was published in 1933 in German and rendered
into numerous languages. The English translation appeared in 1934
and the Armenian translation in 1935.

The human drama so vividly portrayed in Musa Dagh captured the
imagination of artists and intellectuals of different nationalities.

The book and its symbolism also had a direct bearing on the
Armenians and the Jews. The Armenians were elated and grateful that
a non-Armenian had exposed their forsaken fate to the international
community. The Jews in Europe and in Palestine read Musa Dagh as a
beacon of hope for their salvation. Turkey and the Turks, on their
part, pressured the Hollywood movie giant MGM to shelf a grand film
project based on Musa Dagh, and to this day they manipulate the novel
to deny the Armenian Genocide.

Dr. Shemmassian concluded his talk by saying: “This year marks the 80th
anniversary of the publication of Wefel’s Musa Dagh novel. But it is
not a mere celebration of a past accomplishment, because the book’s
legacy is very much alive today. Four recent cases, among others,
prove this point. First, in June 2012, the Czech Republic held the
country’s first international conference on genocide studies.

Its general theme, inspired by the Forty Days, was: ‘Mountains
of Moses: Revolt, Resistance and Rescuing of the Victims of Mass
Extermination.’ Second, in March 2013, the Lepsius House and the
Moses Mendelssohn Center in Potsdam, Germany organized a three-day
conference titled ‘Genocide and Literature: Franz Werfel in an
Armenian-Jewish-Turkish-German Perspective.’ Third, also this year,
in April, an exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the
Forty Days opened at the National Library of the Republic of Armenia
with the co-sponsorship of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute at
Dzidzernagapert, Armenia. Fourth, The Franz-Werfel-Human Rights Award,
which carries prize money in the amount of ~@10,000, since 2003 is
awarded every two years in Frankfurt, Germany ‘to individuals, and
occasionally also to initiatives or groups, who have opposed breaches
of human rights, genocide, displacement and the deliberate destruction
of national, ethnic, racial or religious groups.’ The list goes on.”

A question and answer session followed a PowerPoint presentation of
some 30 pictures depicting scenes from the Musa Daghians’ rescue by
French warships, leading personalities as well as fighters involved in
the battles, the Port Said refugee camp, and the monument dedicated
to the resistance on September 18, 1932. A reception concluded the
evening.

BAKU: European Parliament Supports Settlement Of NKconflict On Basis

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT SUPPORTS SETTLEMENT OF NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT ON BASIS OF UN SECURITY COUNCIL RESOLUTIONS

Trend, Azerbaijan
Oct 23 2013

Azerbaijan, Baku, October 23/Trend/

A draft resolution on the European Neighbourhood Policy was adopted
in the plenary session of the European Parliament on Wednesday.

On paragraph 16 of the resolution, the European Parliament mentioned
that the occupation of one state’s territories that is a participant
of the “Eastern Partnership” program, by another state which also
participates in this program, is a violation of the fundamental
principles and objectives of the “Eastern Partnership”.

It was specifically emphasized that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
should be resolved on the basis of the UN Security Council Resolutions
822, 853, 874 and 884 adopted in 1993 and the basic principles of the
OSCE Minsk Group reflected in the L’Aquila Joint Statement of July 10,
2009, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry told Trend on Wednesday.

In the resolution adopted by the European Parliament for the first
time it is emphasized that the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict should be
resolved in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions demanding
an immediate, unconditional and complete withdrawal of the occupying
forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories and ensuring of
Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and inviolability of
its borders.

This resolution of the European Parliament proves once again that
the international community supports the settlement of the conflict
on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions.

The European Parliament previously adopted resolutions demanding
withdrawal of Armenian Armed Forces from the occupied territories
of Azerbaijan, the return of these territories under the control of
Azerbaijan and ensure the right of refugees and internally displaced
persons to return to their homelands, as well as the suspension of
sending units of Armenia’s standing army to the Azerbaijani territory.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are
currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

Muscovite Builds Record-Breaking Jesus Statue In Syria

MUSCOVITE BUILDS RECORD-BREAKING JESUS STATUE IN SYRIA

The Moscow Times, RF
Oct 23 2013

23 October 2013 | Issue 5240
By Grace Cuddihy

A bronze statue of Jesus Christ, taller than the famous Christ the
Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, has appeared in war-torn Syria.

The statue, titled “I Have Come to Save the World” was apparently
the brainchild of Yury Gavrilov, a 49-year-old Muscovite who runs an
organization in London called the St. Paul and St. George Foundation.

The project was backed by both the Russian Orthodox Church and the
Russian government, which takes an active interest in Syria, as seen
in recent events. Russia also has a navy base on Syria’s Mediterranean
sea coast.

Despite the statue’s Russian connection, it was cast in Armenia and
made by an Armenian sculptor, Artush Papoian. Syria’s ethnic Armenians
have been fleeing the country in droves since the conflict began,
to the extent that Armenia has built a new settlement called New
Aleppo to house them, the news website Eurasianet.org reported. The
settlement is named after the war-torn northern Syrian city where most
of Syria’s ethnic Armenian population live. Some 7,000 of Syria’s
ethnic Armenians are now seeking refuge in neighboring Armenia,
Armenian news agencies reported.

The Armenian statue was installed Oct. 14, which coincided with two
religious holidays – both Orthodox Christian and Muslim. Orthodox
Christians celebrate the feast day of the Protection of the Most Holy
Virgin Mary and Muslims celebrate Kurban Bayram.

Though all military activity was suspended in the region while the
statue was being installed, the project has been in the works since
2005 and is not related to the current military crisis in the country,
Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.

The statue is located on a mountaintop near the city of Saidnaya. The
statue is near the Monastery of the Cherubim, perched above the
historic pilgrimage route from Constantinople to Jerusalem and is
2,100 meters above sea level.

The statue stands at 39 meters tall together with the plinth, which
is taller than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer statue, which
stands at 38 meters. The enormous statue can be seen from neighboring
countries Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and Israel.

The director of Gavrilov’s St. Paul and St. George Foundation, Samir
el-Gadban, commented on the importance of the statue in the war-torn
country and expressed his hopes for the future.

“We hope that this sculptural composition brings peace and love to
the hearts of people and that our work will help restore peace and
calm in this long-suffering region,” he told Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Latvian Parliament, Armenian FM Discuss Unused Economic Cooperation

LATVIAN PARLIAMENT, ARMENIAN FM DISCUSS UNUSED ECONOMIC COOPERATION POTENTIAL

Baltic News Service / – BNS
October 22, 2013 Tuesday 3:54 PM EET

RIGA, Oct 22, BNS – The Latvian parliament delegation during a meeting
with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian underscored the
unused cooperation potential in economy, the Latvian parliament’s
press service reported.

Latvia and Armenia have a stable and constructive political dialogue
and active cooperation in other areas, while both countries still
have a large cooperation potential, including in economy, culture
and education, said representatives of the Latvian delegation during
their meeting with Nalbandian in Erevan.

The shared historical experience, mutual understanding and positive
relations open wide opportunities for handing over Latvia’s experience
in implementation of reforms as an EU member to Armenia, said Latvian
parliament deputy speaker Andrejs Klementjevs.

Latvia underscored the Eastern Partnership as Latvia’s foreign policy
priority in the context of the EU-Armenian relations, getting ready for
the Eastern Partnership summit in November in Vilnius, and preparing
for Latvia’s EU presidency in the first half of 2015.

Latvia may serve as a great platform for Armenian business investments
and entrance in the EU market, said the parliament delegation.

The parties agreed that the Latvian-Armenian intergovernmental
commission that started work in the summer is a successful instrument
for intensifying bilateral relations and deepening economic relations.

The Latvian Foreign Ministry underscored that economic cooperation
between both countries has grown, but it is not too intense —
the foreign trade was slightly over three million euros last year,
and Armenia ranked 87th among Latvia’s trade partners. Latvia has a
positive trade balance with Armenia as its exports exceed imports by
1.33 million euros.

Latvia called on Armenia to use Latvia’s geopolitical advantages,
including the potential of ports, in establishing trade with the
EU members.

Zardusht Alizadeh: Government Gave Karabakh And Took The Rest Of Aze

ZARDUSHT ALIZADEH: GOVERNMENT GAVE KARABAKH AND TOOK THE REST OF AZERBAIJAN

20:59 23/10/2013 ” REGION

The point of domestic and foreign policy of the Azerbaijani authorities
is to plunder the country with impunity and to not one share with
anyone, said Zardusht Alizadeh, a famous Azerbaijani political
scientist in an interview given to “Minval.az”.

Responding to a question, how will develop Azerbaijan its relations
with the West and with Russia during the next five years of Ilham
Aliyev’s presidency, the political scientist said that foreign policy
is the continuation of the internal one.

“What is the point of this policy of Azerbaijan? The point is that
the elite groups are engaged in the privatization of oil, gas, budget,
corruption revenues. This is the main purpose of their existence and
operation. For the smooth implementation of this internal policy,
the government is suitably carrying out a foreign policy which, will
first provide the so-called absolute sovereignty of Azerbaijan, that
is the irregularity of international law and the commitments which
our country undertook, which would have prevented the current elite
to steal,” he said.

According to Alizadeh, that is why the Azerbaijani authorities to raise
the flag of the Republic, celebrate the Flag Day, educate people in
a spirit of loyalty to sovereignty. “As if the sovereignty does not
refer to Karabakh, to the enforcement of the law, and only refers to
the fact that he could threaten all foreign countries with finger,”
he said, noting that the policy of the authorities is directed at
breaking the processes of globalization and European integration,
as far as it would hinder them from robbing Azerbaijan.

Touching upon the relations with Russia, the political scientist
stated that in his time “the noble Khan” Heydar Aliyev has built
relationship with that country, which would limit the interference
of Kremlin in the affairs of Azerbaijan. “They should pay for it. He
paid with Karabakh. And the rest was his hierarchy, saying that,
do not interfere in the internal affairs,” Alizadeh said, noting
that Azerbaijan had become Heydar Aliyev’s estate, which he ran as
he wanted.

According to Alizadeh, Heydar Aliyev has “given” Karabakh, getting in
return the rest of the Azerbaijan along with oil and gas. Political
scientist noted that Azerbaijan will not join the Eurasian Union as the
sense of the policy of government is in the fact of not sharing with
anyone. “We have no desire to go with Russia. We are here, while there
a Russian oligarch will come out and will require a share,” he said.

Answering the question why Azerbaijan has not developed very good
relations with Turkey Aliade noted that Turkey wanted to get deeper
into the affairs of Azerbaijan. “Especially into the oil affairs. And
our government hit them on their hands, saying that they should
not hanker for the holy lakes. That’s why today we have such a cool
friendship with Turkey. Keep distance – we are keeping a distance
with all the countries in order to let the authorities to plunder
Azerbaijan with impunity. In politics this is their main purpose of
existence,” stated the political scientist.

“The Azerbaijani authorities protect their right to be the owners of
their independent territory and wealth. Therefore, it is not going
to be at war with anyone, including quarrels with Armenia. The gave
a word – they gave Karabakh and took Baku. As they say, a man should
keep his word. He will tell stories to the people while being engage
in parallel development of means. And this is the most important. In
this case, the European orientation is disadvantageous. Europe will
require us to be transparent and honest. And it’s uncomfortable for
the authorities. At the house of a hanged no one talks of rope,”
the expert thisnk.

Alizadeh stated that Russia is dangerous for the government of
Azerbaijan since it wants to “enter” into the republic and take a fair
share of revenues. “It is also dangerous with Iran: there specific
ideological direction, based on the idea of social justice. Therefore,
Islam is dangerous too. Thus recipe that our nation is being fed is
simple: the national leader and his dear successor,” he said.

Answering the question what has the closed and hasty inauguration of
President Aliyev been connected with, the political scientist said that
Azerbaijan has become financially quite independent. “The authorities
at present behave themselves like Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Have
capitals. They openly say that they own finances and due to this do
not depend on anyone. That’s why they do not take into account the
views of the West and the ruleof the people calmly,” he said.

However, according to Alizadeh there is no confrontation between the
West and Azerbaijan. “For some reason we dramatize the situation. For
the West, Azerbaijan is somewhere in the 99th place, and maybe on
the 200th. The West has a lot of problems. And they are not concerned
with Azerbaijan”, he said.

The Armenian Government decided today to liberalize the air traffic
market. The “Open air” policy will have a positive influence on
the economy, will create jobs and contribute to increased number of
passengers and lower ticket prices.

today that the National Competitiveness Council had signed a contract
with the McKinsey & Company to work out the best strategy of the
sphere for Armenia.

“The strategy has been discussed with the President of the Republic
twice, experts of the McKinsey & Company have visited Armenia for
several times. According to the best specialists of the sphere,
Armenia should take the path of liberalization, which will promote
the rise of the GDP, create jobs, make the services more convenient
and cheaper. There are the main provisions reflected in the strategy,”
the Prime Minister said.

According to experts, the “Open air” policy will ensure a 1-2%
economic growth and will create 18-23 thousand jobs.
