AYF Participates in First BDP Youth Congress in Turkey

DIYARBAKIR (DIKRANAGERD), Turkey-On Saturday, November 30, an Armenian
Revolutionary Federation Youth Organization delegation comprised of
Sarkis Degirmenjian and Rupen Janbazian from Armenia, participated in
the first youth congress of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy
Party (BDP). The congress was organized by the Youth Assembly of the
BDP and was held in Diyarbakir’s Seyrantepe Sport Hall. The invitation
was extended to the AYF as well as all other member youth organizations
of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY).

The conference was attended by over 30,000 BDP members and supporters,
as well as several representatives of socialist youth organizations
from around the world. The representatives of the AYF addressed the
crowd, outlining their view on a number of regional and international
issues faced by both the Armenian and Kurdish people.

The speech, which was delivered first in Armenian and then in
Turkish, focused on the shared history of the two peoples and
how a cooperation based on mutual respect and understanding can be
instrumental in today’s changing Middle East. After the address, the
AYF representatives presented the BDP Youth Assembly members with a
commemorative plaque.

The following day, on December 1, the AYF delegation participated in
a forum organized by the BDP Youth Assembly with the representatives
of all the invited organizations, during which a number of issues
pertaining to socialist youth were discussed.

It is important to note that two other high-level meeting between
delegations representing the ARF and the BDP were held over the past
few weeks in Washington and Istanbul on October 29 and November 12
respectively. The November 29 meeting was the first time since 1923
that an official ARF delegation had visited Istanbul.

Turkey’s BDP, which was founded in 2008, has observer status in the
Socialist International, and publicly urges the government of Turkey
to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

Putin Faces Protests As He Woos Armenia

PUTIN FACES PROTESTS AS HE WOOS ARMENIA

Reuters

YEREVAN Mon Dec 2, 2013 8:33am EST

(Reuters) – About 500 people marched through the capital of Armenia on
Monday to denounce visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin and to
protest against plans to join a Moscow-led customs union.

Some of the crowd in central Yerevan held banners declaring “Putin,
go home” or “No to the USSR”, a reference to the Russian leader’s
efforts to bind former Soviet republics together more closely in
economic and security alliances.

Putin flew to the South Caucasus country for talks on its decision
in September to join the Customs Union with Russia, Belarus and
Kazakhstan, but began his visit in another city, Gyumri. He was due
in Yerevan later on Monday.

The rally in Yerevan followed much larger protests in Ukraine, which
suspended plans to sign a trade deal with the European Union last
week and decided to rebuild economic ties with Russia instead.

Kremlin critics in the West accuse Putin of putting pressure on
Ukraine, Armenia and other former Soviet republics to reject agreements
that would increase their integration with the EU.

Putin has made clear Moscow wants to increase its influence in the
strategic region sandwiched between Russia, Turkey, Iran and the oil
and gas deposits of the Caspian Sea basin.

“We are going to strengthen our position in the South Caucasus,
drawing on the best of what we have inherited from ancestors and
good relations with all countries in the region,” Putin told a
Russian-Armenian regional forum in Gyumri.

“Participation in the Customs Union … already is bringing Russia,
Kazakhstan and Belarus tangible dividends,” he said.

Police blocked a central street as the demonstrators headed closer
to the headquarters of President Serzh Sarksyan’s administration,
and protesters handed over a letter urging the government to renounce
its decision to join the customs union.

Russia is the biggest foreign investor in Armenia and its largest
trading partner. Bilateral trade grew 22 percent to $1.2 billion last
year. Most trade has been imports to Armenia.

Three years ago Russia extended its lease on a military base in the
landlocked, resource-poor nation of 3.2 million until 2044, ensuring
it maintains a firm foothold in the South Caucasus.

The region also includes Azerbaijan, which has been embroiled in
a territorial dispute with Armenia since the Soviet collapse, and
Georgia, with which Russia fought a five-day war in 2008.

Putin will not stay overnight in Armenia

Hraparak: Putin will not stay overnight in Armenia

Sunday, December 01, 2013

`Hraparak’ paper writes that in all likelihood Russian President
Vladimir Putin will not stay overnight in Armenia.

`On his arrival in Gyumri, he will participate in the events there.
Then he will travel to Yerevan, visit the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial,
attend a dinner in his honor and return to Moscow. The reason for not
staying overnight in Armenia is probably that during his visit to Baku
he didn’t spend the night there either,’ the paper notes.

U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan has no information about well-known American
television host’s plan to visit NK

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov.30
By Sabina Ahmadova – Trend:

The U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan has no information about well-known American
television journalist, former CNN host Larry King’s plans to travel to
occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, the Embassy told Trend.

“Due to the existing state of hostilities, we cannot offer consular
services to U.S. citizens in Nagorno-Karabakh,” the Embassy said.

According to the Embassy, the U.S. continues to urge all sides to take
meaningful steps towards a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when
Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs
of the THE OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently
holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding
regions.

World AIDS Day: 1,586 HIV patients in Armenia

World AIDS Day: 1,586 HIV patients in Armenia

12:11 – 01.12.13

December 1 is World AIDS Day.

Overall, 1,586 HIV cases have been recorded in Armenia since 1988,
with 228 cases last year and 205 this year, Armenia’s National Center
for AIDS Prevention reports.

30-year-old Marine, who is working with HIV patients helping them to
overcome problems, has an HIV status. She knew about her state when
she got married in 2004 and visited a doctor in the third month of
pregnancy.

`My husband infected me. He knew about being infected only after
knowing about my state. After I knew about it, I had a psychological
shock and wanted to commit suicide,’ she says.

Marine also spoke of treatment. She says that the treatment and
necessary medicines are free.

The Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria is working in
Armenia and will continue its activities until 2015. If the government
fails to fund further treatment of HIV patients from 2015 on, they
will face a most serious problem.

`The medicines are very expensive. Most of the HIV patients are
socially vulnerable. They can hardly make both ends meet,’ Marine
says.

Elina Azatyan, Chairwoman of the Real World, Real People NGO – which
aims at improving HIV patients’ living standards – told Tert.am that
people avoid being examined for AIDS.

`We are trying to suggest to people that they need regular medical
examination and should not be ashamed of it. Public awareness has
recently been raised. People are unaware of the importance of medical
examination, but they still do not turn to doctors,’ she said.

Ms Azatyan points out the problem of raising awareness in Armenia’s
regions. People prefer turning to doctors from Yerevan.

`In this case they are sure of secrecy,’ she said.

Armenia & Karabakh travel guide presented in Canadian cities

Armenia & Karabakh travel guide presented in Canadian cities

November 30, 2013 – 11:40 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Attorney-Author Matthew Karanian spoke to large
crowds in the Canadian cities of Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto as part
of his three-city tour of Canada to promote his newest book, `Armenia
and Karabakh: The Stone Garden Travel Guide.’

Karanian addressed a crowd of about 100 people earlier this month at
the Armenian Community Centre in Montreal, and showed photographs from
his book.

Karanian also presented `Armenia and Karabakh’ to capacity crowds at
the Armenian Community Center in Toronto, and at the embassy of the
Republic of Armenia in Ottawa.

The events in Montreal and Toronto were sponsored by the Hamazkayin
Armenian Educational and Cultural Society. The entire tour was under
the auspices of the Armenian Embassy in Canada.

The book presentation at the Armenian Embassy in Ottawa was
standing-room-only, as guests filled the parlor of the diplomatic
house to capacity. The embassy event was hosted by ambassador Armen
Yeganian, and was attended by diplomats, by Canadian Members of
Parliament, and by leaders of the Armenian community.

Megerdich Megerdichian, the Chairman of the All Armenia Fund in
Canada, served as master of ceremonies for the event in Toronto, and
introduced Karanian with an enthusiastic endorsement of his book.

At each event, Karanian discussed the journey of creating this book,
and narrated a photographic slide featuring stunning photography from
Armenia and Artsakh.

Karanian told the story of how he created Armenia’s first travel guide
more than a decade ago, and how that guide has grown and evolved
through three editions to become the award-winning book that was
recently released.

`The beauty of Armenia never ceases to amaze me,’ Karanian says. `I
want to do what I can to help share it with as many people as
possible.’

`Armenia and Karabakh’ is available for purchase from the Armenian
Community Centers of Montreal and Toronto, and from Amazon.com.
