MINISTER: NO ONE CAN FORCE ARMENIA TO ACCEPT UNILATERAL COMPROMISE

July 09, 2014 | 19:54

YEREVAN. – Ceasefire violations initiated by Azerbaijani side are
targeted at creation of tension and are an attempt to prevent progress
in talks, Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan said on Wednesday.

“The adversary cannot understand that it is impossible to force us
to do something. They imposed war, and achieved success. Now we
are being imposed an arms race. However, Azerbaijani side should
remember that only atmosphere of confidence can bring progress. One
of the elements of confidence is removal of snipers, refusal from
sabotage acts and international investigations into the incidents,”
the Minister told reporters.

However, he emphasized that success in talks is related to readiness
of the parties to reach mutual compromise.

“No one will be able to impose something on us,” he added.

Jewish, Muslim And Christian Leaders Meet To Call For An End To Bloo

JEWISH, MUSLIM AND CHRISTIAN LEADERS MEET TO CALL FOR AN END TO BLOODSHED

By JEREMY SHARON
07/09/2014 21:44

The meeting was called in light of the outbreak of hostilities between
Israel and the Hamas regime in Gaza, as well as the severe tensions
and communal violence that has occurred in recent days.

Religious leaders meeting Photo: JEREMY SHARON The Forum of Religious
leaders in Israel convened together with President elect Reuven
Rivlin at the offices of the Chief Rabbinate in Israel on Wednesday
afternoon and issued a joint statement calling for an end to blood
shed in the region.

Among the group were Chief Rabbi David Lau, Sheikh Muhammed Kiwan,
an imam and chairman of the Council of Muslim Leaders in Israel,
Greek-Orthodox Patriarch Theophillis III, Armenian Patriarch Nourhan
Manougian and spiritual leader of the Druse community in Israel Sheikh
Muafak Tarif, as well as several other notable clerics.

The meeting was called in light of the outbreak of hostilities between
Israel and the Hamas regime in Gaza, as well as the severe tensions
and communal violence that has occurred in recent days.

Speaking first, Lau said that everyone should condemn violence
against innocent people, noting that he had vehemently denounced the
murder of Arab teenager Muhammed Abu Khdeir, as well as the slaying
of Jewish youths Naftali Fraenkel, Gil’ad Shaar and Eyal Yifrach
earlier this month.

“Sometimes there is no choice but to strike and to protect our
society,” the chief rabbi continued however, but observed that the
IDF conducts a practice of warning people to evacuate areas which are
likely to be bombed to avoid harming civilians “as opposed to others
who fire missiles into population centers and harm innocents.”

“I call on all everyone to protect and venerate life and its unique
value and to know how to respect our fellow man and to conduct
disagreements in a respectful and appropriate way which preserves
life,” Lau concluded.

Rivlin echoed the chief rabbi’s words, saying that there was
“an expectation from the religious leadership to unite in clear
condemnation of all violence and bloodshed.”

“There is an especially heavy responsibility on religious leaders to
reduce the flames and lower tensions, and to find a way for the voice
of reason to prevail,” he continued. “May we serve as guides for all
our communities. We are not doomed to live together but destined to
live together,” Rivlin averred.

Kiwan called for all sides to promote “brotherhood, peace and respect,”
between societies and to do everything everything possible to advance
peace.

“I pray we may go out from this meeting with one voice that will
be heard throughout the world that we affirm that there is nothing
more precious than human life and any act of desecration must be
categorically condemned,” Kiwan said.

Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophillis III said that Christian leaders
were committed to a mission of prayer for peace, reconciliation,
and said that peace would be achieved “not through tanks on both
banks of the river but through the eradication of prejudice, hatred
and bigotry and to try our best to make it clear that life is indeed
very holy because we are made in the image of God and so everyone is
entitled to freedom and respect regardless of colour, ethnicity or
religious affiliation.”

Bribery Case Victim Changed Testimony Several Times Under Police Pre

BRIBERY CASE VICTIM CHANGED TESTIMONY SEVERAL TIMES UNDER POLICE PRESSURE: LAWYER

07.09.2014 10:58 epress.am

The sixth police division and investigator Minasyan continue to put
pressure on victim Babken Budaghyan in the bribery case, defendant
Sahak Harutyunyan’s attorney Inessa Petrosyan informed Epress.am.

Budaghyan in court on July 7 declared that the Special Investigation
Service (SIS) threatened him — if he doesn’t change his testimony,
they’ll charge him with another case.

Recall, Armenian Ministry of Justice employees Sahak Harutyunyan and
Aleksander Khachatryan are accused of extorting a bribe of 400,000
AMD (a little less than $1,000 USD) from the victim. The charge
was compiled based on the victim’s testimony, but he later said in
court that he testified against Sahak Harutyunyan upon the request
of investigators.

The July 7 trial began with the court reading Budaghyan’s statement,
in which he wrote that the testimony he made in court was incorrect
and asked for the opportunity to testify again.

“It became clear that our suspicions — that Budaghyan did not appear
in court on July 3 because the investigator was ‘working on him’ —
were justified. By the way, also absent at the July 3 court hearing
was the prosecutor. In any case, the victim declared in court that
investigator Minasyan and sixth [police] division chief Yeghishe
Petrosyan forced him to write that statement. He said that even when
submitting the application to court Yeghishe Petrosyan accompanied
the victim to Etchmiadzin. He forced the victim to leave his car at
the SIS yard and go with him to Etchmiadzin,” said Petrosyan.

In court, the victim, Budaghyan, claimed that Sahakyan didn’t demand
a bribe from him and the entire story about a bribe is a provocation
by a certain Ghazar, who said, “You’ll go and put the money on
Khachatryan’s desk.” The victim even said he’s not literate enough
to be able to write such a statement.

According to the defense attorney, Inessa Petrosyan, at Monday’s court
session Budaghyan requested that sixth police division employees not
accompany him to court. The attorney said that though this is a means
of protection, their presence pressures the victim.

Earlier, defendant Aleksander Khachatryan’s attorney Givi Hovhannisyan
had said it is clearly visible in the video of the victim being
questioned at the police station that the victim has a bruise
under his eye and this proves that Budaghyan testified against the
two defendants after being subjected to violence. According to the
attorney, his client ex officio had no opportunity to make changes to
the list of those granted amnesty, thus it would’ve been fraudulent
of him to agree to take a bribe for something he couldn’t do. Sahak
Harutyunyan, according to the lawyer, had nothing to do with bribery
and a criminal case was launched against him only based on the victim’s
ever-changing testimonies.

Pope: More Persecuted Christians Today Than Ever Before

POPE: MORE PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS TODAY THAN EVER BEFORE

July 8, 2014

(Christian post) – Pope Francis argued last Monday that the 21st
century has seen more Christians under siege for their faith than
during the time of the early church.

“There are many martyrs today, in the Church, many persecuted
Christians,” said the pope during a mass in honor of Christian martyrs
who were killed under Roman Emperor Nero. “Think of the Middle East
where Christians must flee persecution, where Christians are killed.

Even those Christians who are forced away in an ‘elegant’ way, with
‘white gloves:’ that too is persecution. There are more witnesses, more
martyrs in the Church today than there were in the first centuries.”

Pope Francis’ words come at a time when Iraq’s small population
of Christians, which trace their roots back to the earliest days
of Christianity, have had to flee their homes as militants from the
Islamic State of Iraq and Syria have taken over the city of Mosul. On
Sunday, Nigerian Christians were once again targeted by the Boko Haram,
which killed scores of worshippers and burned down four churches in
a major attack in Kwada and Kautikari villages.

The pope asked Christians to remember “our glorious ancestors” and “let
us think also to our brothers who are persecuted, who suffer and who,
with their blood are nurturing the seed of so many little churches that
are born. Let us pray for them and for us,” reported Vatican Radio.

Pope Francis also noted that the church’s witness in the face of
persecution and hard times could lead to church growth.

“When historical situations require a strong witness, there are
martyrs, the greatest witnesses. And the Church grows thanks to the
blood of the martyrs. This is the beauty of martyrdom. It begins with
witness, day after day, and it can end like Jesus, the first martyr,
the first witness, the faithful witness: with blood,” he said.

The Christian Post reported last week that Christian History magazine,
in partnership with Voice of the Martyrs-USA members, focused on
persecution in its latest issue, citing church statisticians who say
an estimated 70 million Christians have been killed due to their faith
since the time of Jesus and that other believers were partly to blame.

The publication references information gleaned by the late church
statistician David Barrett and Todd M. Johnson of Gordon-Conwell
Theological Seminary’s Center for the Study of Global Christianity.

Barrett and Johnson estimate that “throughout Christian history,
across all traditions of Christianity, and in every part of the world,
some 70 million Christians have been murdered for their faith.” They
also estimate that 5.5 million Christians have lost their lives due
to persecution from other Christians, which include Roman Catholics,
Eastern Orthodox adherents and other Christians.
