Clark University and Worcester State University to Host
`Manufacturing Denial and the Assault on Scholarship and Truth’

The conference `Manufacturing Denial and the Assault on Scholarship
and Truth’ will take place on Friday and Saturday, October 24-25,
2014, at Worcester State University and Clark University in Worcester.
The conference is co-sponsored and organized by the Strassler Center
for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University; the Robert
Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marion Mugar Chair at the
Strassler Center; the Armenian Genocide Program at the Center for the
Study of Genocide and Human Rights at Rutgers University; the National
Association for Armenian Studies and Research; and Worcester State
University (Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Equal Opportunity, and
other departments and offices).

The academic conference represents the first time that social
scientists and natural scientists will meet to analyze the analogous
and interrelated, though not always identical, phenomena of genocide
denial – of the Armenian Genocide, Holocaust, Rwandan, and other cases
– and the denial of scientific truth – from evolution to climate
change.

Since the 1980s, genocide denial, particularly of the Holocaust and
the Armenian Genocide, has generated a substantial body of literature
analyzing and documenting the methods and rhetoric of those who seek
to negate or obscure documented cases of mass violence. More
recently, an impressive amount of literature has explored the ways in
which various industries and political operatives have used the
strategy of `manufacturing doubt’ to undermine the scientific
consensus on smoking, pollution, evolution, and global warming.
Nonetheless, the corruption and co-opting of scholarship for the
purposes of fomenting denial continues.

The conference will open at Worcester State University’s Ghosh
Auditorium on Friday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m., with a keynote address
by Prof. Brendan J. Nyhan, professor in the Department of Government
at Dartmouth College, entitled `The Challenge of Denial: Why People
Refuse to Accept Unwelcome Facts,’ and a response by Prof. Henry
Theriault, chairman of the Department of Philosophy at Worcester State
University. Khatchig Mouradian, Ph.D. candidate at Clark’s Strassler
Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Coordinator of the
Armenian Genocide Program at the CGHR at Rutgers University, will
offer welcoming remarks. This event is open to the general public.

On Saturday, April 25, beginning at 8:30 a.m., there will be four
two-hour sessions held at Clark University. These sessions are
primarily for conference participants but a limited number of seats
are available to the public by reservation only.

Session 1, `Modern Strategies and Rhetoric of Denial,’ will be chaired
by Dr. Lou Ann Matossian (independent scholar) and will include
presentations by Marc A. Mamigonian (National Association for Armenian
Studies and Research), Sara Brown (Clark University), and Shawn Olson
(Utah State University).

Session 2, chaired by Dr. Taner Akçam (Clark University), will examine
`The Political Uses of Denial.’ Participating in the session will be
Dr. Jennifer Dixon (Villanova University), Dr. Alex Hinton (Rutgers
University), and Dr. Mark Gottleib (Northeastern University).

Session 3 will take up the question `Countering Denial: How and When?’
with Dr. Dikran Kaligian (Worcester State University) as chairman.
The panelists will be Dr. Keith Watenpaugh (University of California,
Davis), Dr.

Ken Maclean (Clark University), and Emma Bloomfield (University of
Southern California).

The conference will conclude with a summing up panel featuring
Dr. Debórah Dwork (Clark University), Dr. Richard G. Hovannisian
(University of California, Los Angeles), and Dr. Massimo Pigliucci
(City University of New York-Lehman College), followed by open
discussion.

International Community Never Responded To Destruction Of Armenian C

INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY NEVER RESPONDED TO DESTRUCTION OF ARMENIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE IN AZERBAIJAN – SERZH SARGSYAN

13:16 * 19.09.14

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has arrived in Vatican for an
official visit.

Armenia’s leader participated in the opening of the photo exhibition
“Parables of the Orient. Christianity and the Challenge of the New
Millennium” at the Vittoriano Museum Complex in Rome.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan made a speech at the opening of
the exhibition. He particularly dwelt on the destruction of Armenian
cultural monuments in Nakhijevan and throughout Azerbaijan.

Armenia’s leader noted that the international community has never
adequately responded to Azerbaijan’s actions.

“Recently we could see consistent destruction of medieval Armenian
khachkars in Jugha – records of culture and faith. The destruction of
the centuries-old cemetery in Jugha, which dates back to the 9th-16th
centuries, was a manifestation of the policy of complete eradication
of Armenian cultural heritage in Nakhijevan and Azerbaijan over the
past two decades. And the international community has never adequately
responded to that.”

Armenia’s Sargsyan Attends Photo Exhibition About Middle East Christ

ARMENIA’S SARGSYAN ATTENDS PHOTO EXHIBITION ABOUT MIDDLE EAST CHRISTIANS IN ROME

YEREVAN, September 19. /ARKA/. Armenia’s president Serzh Sargsyan who
is in Vatikan on official visit has attended the opening of the photo
exhibition entitled “Parables of the Orient. The Christianity and the
Challenge of the New Millennium” held in Vittoriano museum complex,
the presidential press office reported.

The exhibition aims at focusing the attention of the global community
on the protection of the rich architectural and artistic legacy that,
from centuries, represents a fundamental part of the Christian culture.

The exhibition includes photographs from nine Middle-East countries,
as well as a documentary about destruction of Armenian cross-stones
in Jugha, Azerbaijan.

“I was carefully and silently considering every item at this unique
exhibition, and I am still under impression. If not the honor to
take the floor, I may have kept silence for long like those photos
had. In speaking about the exhibition, our ambassador called it a
“mute outcry” telling about the blows that the Christianity suffered
and is still suffering in its cradle, the Middle East”, Sargsyan said.

Sargsyan said genocides, xenophobia and barbarian destruction of
cultural heritage that is not condemned, clearly and unambiguously,
leads to new crimes. There are lots of examples and one of them is
purposeful destruction of Armenian cross-stones in Jugha and uprooting
of the Armenian Christian cultural heritage across Nakhichevan and
Azerbaijan over the last 20 years, Sargsyan said.

The centennial of the Armenian genocide will be observed next year, but
it has not been adequately condemned yet, the Armenian president said.

According to the president, the power of the religion should be used
to reach peace and tolerance all over the world.

The photo exhibition was initiated by the Armenian Embassy to the Holy
See as part of a friendship festival in Rome and will travel also to
other European cities. In their talks Armenian ambassador to the Holy
See Mickael Minasyan, head of San Egidio community Marco Impaliacco
and chairman of the Pontifical Council for Culture Janfranco Ravazi
spoke about the current status of Christians in the Middle East and
need for protection of social and cultural legacy there.

Sargsyan has also visited San-Bartolomeo church and paid tribute to
Christian martyrs, including victims of the Armenian genocide.

On the same day the Christian community of San Egidio gave a dinner
in the honor of the Armenian president. -0–

Pope Francis To Visit Armenia In 2015

POPE FRANCIS TO VISIT ARMENIA IN 2015

11:34, 19 September, 2014

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 19, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian Apostolic Church
will introduce a number of significant initiatives along with the
sister churches on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in
Etchmiadzin and worldwide. “Armenpress” News Agency had a conversation
regarding this and the upcoming event with His Eminence Archbishop
Hovnan Derderian, the Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian
Church of North America. “The row of events dedicated to the 100th
anniversary of the Armenian Genocide is vast and comprehensive. But
the most noteworthy and significant from the historical viewpoint
is the ceremony of canonization of the Armenian Genocide victims,
which will be held in Holy Etchmiadzin on April 23.

This ceremony is of a certain importance, as the heads of our sister
churches and other religious institutions have been invited to the
event,” Archbishop Hovnan Derderian noted.

Among other things, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, the
Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America,
underscored: “The visit of the Pope of Rome to Armenia is also of a
great importance, as we all are aware that the whole world will react
at this event.”

The fact of the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman government has
been documented, recognized, and affirmed in the form of media
and eyewitness reports, laws, resolutions, and statements by many
states and international organizations. The complete catalogue
of all documents categorizing the 1915 wholesale massacre of the
Armenian population in Ottoman Empire as a premeditated and thoroughly
executed act of genocide, is extensive. Uruguay was the first country
to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide in 1965. The massacres
of the Armenian people were officially condemned and recognized as
genocide in accordance with the international law by France, Germany,
Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, Poland,
Lithuania, Greece, Slovakia, Cyprus, Lebanon, Uruguay, Argentina,
Venezuela, Chile, Canada, Vatican and Australia.

President: Azerbaijan’s Demolition Of Armenian Cultural And Historic

PRESIDENT: AZERBAIJAN’S DEMOLITION OF ARMENIAN CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL MONUMENTS HAS NOT RECEIVED APPROPRIATE RESPONSE OF INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

by Ashot Safaryan

ARMINFO
Friday, September 19, 11:28

Azerbaijan’s demolition of Armenian cultural and historical monuments
has received no appropriate response of the international community,
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said at an exhibition in Vatican.

“One thing is clear – the xenophobia, racism, genocide, demolition of
cultural heritage, which have not been harshly assessed or condemned
in due time, lead to occurrence of new similar crimes. There are
numerous examples. At the exhibition we have just seen the facts
confirming the demolition of the Armenian medieval cemetery in Jugha.

The cemetery had thousands of unique khachkars (cross-stones) of
IX-XVI centuries. In late XX century the Azeri vandals destroyed that
rare cultural site within some 20 years. Meanwhile, this fact has not
been properly assessed by the world community, but numerous people
have realized that they can easily destroy the centuries-old cultural
heritage of an entire nation with pickaxes and remain unpunished. No
wonder that similar cases now occur in Syria, Iraq and other places”,
said Sargsyan.

In the meantime, he pointed out opposite examples as well. “For
instance, Lebanon gives shelter and protects millions of Christians”,
he said. Sargsyan also stressed the need to stop the dictator, who
enslaves his own people and is out for blood of his neighbors.

Otherwise, it will be impossible to prevent re-occurrence of the
crimes of the past, Sargsyan added.

Referendum Ecossais : Le Vote En Ecosse Sur L’independance Va Defini

REFERENDUM ECOSSAIS : LE VOTE EN ECOSSE SUR L’INDEPENDANCE VA DEFINIR UN NOUVEAU PRECEDENT POUR L’AUTODETERMINATION

ARMENIE

l’autodetermination a l’echelle internationale. D’autres, cependant,

finalement resolus.
