Cheltenham Parish Marks 80 Years

By Jeanette Der Hagopian

Holy Trinity Church of Cheltenham, Pa., marked the 80th anniversary of the
parish’s establishment last Sunday, September 28.

Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church
of America (Eastern), celebrated the Divine Liturgy and ordained two young
men to the diaconate.

Antranig Garibian and Krikor Andonian have been serving at Holy Trinity
Church for years. Both grew up in the parish and are now raising their own
families in the church community.

“It was a very emotional moment for me as I accepted the call to service in
front of a community whom I love very dearly, and has given me so much more
than I will ever be able to give back,” Krikor said.

Antranig, who also serves on the Diocesan Council, said “being ordained as a
deacon meant that my community was giving me a sacred trust. I felt the
souls of my grandparents and loved ones with me and guiding me. It is an
honor-but more so, an enormous responsibility.”

Sunday’s diaconate ordination was the first one at the church in 25 years,
and parishioners said they look forward to seeing other young men take up
the vocation in the coming years.

Archbishop Barsamian was assisted on the altar by the parish’s young and
energetic pastor, the Rev. Fr. Hakob Gevorgyan. Also participating in
services was Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, the Diocese’s Ecumenical Director.
Taking part in the subsequent activities was the Very Rev. Fr. Oshagan
Gulgulian, pastor of St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Church of Wynnewood, Pa.

Later that afternoon, some 400 parishioners and guests gathered for a
festive banquet in the church hall. They reflected on the history of Holy
Trinity Church, honored longtime parishioners, and commended the young
generation of Armenians who are carrying forward the founders’ vision.

Archbishop Barsamian presented the “St. Nersess Shnorhali” medal to Dr. Garo
Garibian for his years of service to the parish and the Diocese, as well as
to the global Armenian Church, including Holy Etchmiadzin and the Armenian
Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

An encyclical from His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and
Catholicos of all Armenians, was read by Fr. Gevorgyan.

True to his humble spirit, Dr. Garibian said he was accepting the honor “on
behalf of all those who have helped build and serve our church throughout
the years, as well as the two newly ordained deacons.”

He went on to speak about the three defining periods in the life of the
parish: the arrival of the young Very Rev. Fr. Torkom Manoogian in 1946; the
leadership of the Very Rev. Fr. Haigazoun Melkonian in the 1980s and 90s;
and the new chapter begun by the parish’s current pastor, the Rev. Fr. Hakob
Gevorgyan.

Dr. Garibian also reflected on the life of St. Nersess Shnorhali, the
12th-century Armenian Catholicos who instituted major reforms in the
Armenian Church, and encouraged parishioners to take inspiration from his
life and work.

A second award-the “St. Sahag and St. Mesrob” medal-was presented to Nancy
Basmajian. She currently serves as the director of Adult Christian Education
at Holy Trinity Church. Prior to that, she served the Eastern Diocese for
more than three decades in various capacities, including as co-director of
the Department of Religious Education, program director of St. Vartan Camp,
and executive secretary of the ACYOA Seniors.

The unexpected honor was bestowed at the initiative of the Primate, and took
the honoree completely by surprise. “If I think of myself as a symbol of all
the women of faith who came before me-teachers, choir members, the women who
nurtured and fed our communities, literally and figuratively-then I feel
truly blessed to be able to share it with them,” Nancy Basmajian said.

The program continued with the presentation of the Diocese’s “St. Vartan
Award” to five parishioners who were involved in the church since its
earliest years. Harry Andonian, Albert Kapeghian, Harry Mirijanian, Jack
Vishab, and Berj Yeretzian have all served on the parish council, as well as
a number of other church committees and organizations.

Archbishop Aykazian, who visited the parish in the years when Holy Trinity
Church did not have a permanent pastor, spoke about the warm and hospitable
spirit of the community. He said he felt at home among the Armenians of
Cheltenham, and enjoys returning to the church on various occasions.

Another highlight of the celebration was the screening of
a
short video overview of the parish’s past and its vision for the future.

Holy Trinity Church was established in 1934, when the Armenian community of
north Philadelphia first began to make plans for a permanent house of
worship. The first church, located in Philadelphia, was consecrated in 1942.

Four years later, parishioners welcomed the Very Rev. Fr. Torkom Manoogian,
a young priest who injected new vigor into the parish in the years following
World War II. (Fr. Manoogian would go on to lead the Eastern Diocese as its
primate, and later became the 96th Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem.)

In 1964, the church in Philadelphia was destroyed by fire. Services were
held at the Odd Fellows Orphanage while the parish’s building committee drew
up plans for a new house of worship. Land was purchased in the suburb of
Cheltenham, and in September 1966, the present church building was
consecrated by the parish’s former pastor, by that time Bishop Torkom
Manoogian.

The community continued to grow in the ensuing years. Under the guidance of
the late Very Rev. Fr. Haigazoun Melkonian, the ACYOA was re-energized and
young people became increasingly involved in parish life.

Fr. Gevorgyan, who became the parish pastor in 2010, described Holy Trinity
Church as a place where “our faithful find love, comfort, peace, joy, and
hope.” He spoke about the perseverance of the church’s founders, and
stressed that a new generation of Armenians must now “provide the oil-our
time, our talent, and our treasure” to keep alive the flame lit 80 years
ago.

“This was a day that will long be remembered in the life of our church,”
said parish council vice chair Jeanette Der Hagopian. “Our parish is
multi-generational and we are working together to grow in our faith and
follow the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

The anniversary committee was comprised of Ara Shakarjian, Nancy Basmajian,
Jeanette Der Hagopian, Barbara Harmon, Leslie Movsessian, Merle Santerian,
Anne Terkanian, and Lisa Viarengo. The banquet was co-chaired by Pauline
Chapjian and Margo Silk.

“Of course, we expect that on October 10 Armenia will sign the
agreement on joining the Eurasian Economic Union and the country
will become a member of the Union in January 2015,” the head of the
parliamentary committee on state and legal affairs Hovhannes Sahakyan
told reporters.

In his words, Armenia’s progress can never occur at the expense
of Karabakh. “This is the response to the talk that Armenia’s
membership in the Eurasian Economic Union endangers Nagorno Karabakh’s
independence” Sahakyan said.

Experts Say Media Freedom Hurt After Armenia Enters Into EEU

EXPERTS SAY MEDIA FREEDOM HURT AFTER ARMENIA ENTERS INTO EEU

10.08.2014 09:49 epress.am

Armenia’s membership into the Eurasian Economic Union will have grave
consequences in terms of freedom of speech, said today, by Chairman
of Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression Ashot Melikyan and
president of the Gyumri-based Journalists’ Club “Asparez” Levon
Barseghyan during a press conference.

Ashot Melikyan conducted a comparison between the levels of freedom
of speech among Armenia and the EEU’s other members. According to
the expert, Armenia is in a much better situation, and that the
other member states (Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan) have a lot to
learn from Armenia in areas such as internet access. He specifically
discussed Armenia’s preliminary draft reform about “fake” information
on the internet as a violation against freedom of speech. According
to him, passing similar bills would be easier after entering the EEU.

Levon Barseghyan believed that the most pessimistic scenario after
entering the EEU is that the situation of Armenia’s mass media may
become similar to that of Russia’s. He stressed that the discussion
of pluralism in Russia is not allowed and that journalists, as well
as Russian experts are “Vladimir Putin’s media gun.”

The most positive scenario, according to the expert, Armenia would
be allowed a certain level of media freedom.

“They’ll say, speak as much as you want, you are a small nation,
our army is in your country, we see your economic flows, and the KGB
is tracking everyone’s phones,” noted Barseghyan. However, in his
opinion, the present situation of journalists in Armenia is not to be
envied either. Within the past 3 years, there have been 250 cases of
violence registered against journalists, however, only 4 cases had
a subsequent investigation in the matter.

The Armenian government is set to sign an accession treaty to enter
the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union on October 10, 2014 in Minsk,
Belarus after repeated delays and continuing negotiations. According to
the Reporters Without Border Freedom Index 2014, Armenia far surpassed
the other member states with a score of 78, while Kazakhstan was
ranked 161, Belarus 157, and Russia 148.

Syrie : Les Combats Font Rage, Resistance Acharnee Des Kurdes

SYRIE : LES COMBATS FONT RAGE, RESISTANCE ACHARNEE DES KURDES

SYRIE

recherches americain Carnegie a Beyrouth.

Political Prisoners Of Our Days: How The Term Is Defined Today (Vide

POLITICAL PRISONERS OF OUR DAYS: HOW THE TERM IS DEFINED TODAY (VIDEO)

12:26 | October 8,2014 | Politics

Seventeen citizens in Armenia are imprisoned for their political
views. This is the opinion of some human rights organizations.

Fifteen of them, involved in a case known as ‘Shant Harutyunyan and
his friends,’ who were arrested on November 5 after protesting against
Armenia’s membership to the Customs Union.

A political prisoner is someone imprisoned for his political views,
says Paruyr Hayrikyan, Chairman of the National Self-Determination
Union (AIM).

The Criminal Code does not give a definition of a political prisoner.

Like in many other countries, in Armenia too, participants of
political actions are charged with disorderly conduct or the use of
force against a government representative.

Freedom fighter Volodya Avetisyan, who was struggling for the rights of
his friends, was soon arrested on fraud charges. “We have an obvious
example – the case of Vladimir Avetisyan who was arrested on some
trumped-up charges. Witnesses contradicted each other in court, later,
it was found that they had been intimidated,” says Gagik Sarukhanyan,
a member of Pre-parliament Initiative.

The human rights activists also included Hayk Kureghyan’s name in
the list of the 17 political prisoners who shot a policeman from a
toy gun during the November 5, 2013 protest.

“Hayk Kureghyan made a spontaneous move displaying intolerance. He
jumped onto a car and using a toy pistol showed intolerance. In the
result, they levied against him new charged and eventually he faced
up to ten years’ imprisonment.”

Artur Sakunts, Head of the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office,
says Kureghyan has appeared in prison for political intolerance. “Given
the fact that Liska [Syunik Governor Suren Khachatryan] and his
bodyguard illegal used weapons and killed a person, we can say that
Hayk Kureghyan is undoubtedly a political prisoner.”

Authorities in Armenia do not admit that there are prisoners in the
country. Speaking at Columbia University ten days ago, Serzh Sargsyan
personally said that there are not political prisoners in Armenia.

Seuls les legislateurs du parti Orinats Yerkir, du parti Armenie

Ce n’est pas la première fois que le RPA, comme parti de la majorite,

President Of Armenia Discontented At Some CSTO Member’s Stance On Ka

PRESIDENT OF ARMENIA DISCONTENTED AT SOME CSTO MEMBER’S STANCE ON KARABAKH CONFLICT

ARMINFO
Tuesday, October 7, 13:10

On 6 October, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan received the
Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO)
Nikolay Bordyuzha who in the Republic of Armenia on a working visit,
the president’s press-service told ArmInfo.

The Armenian President welcomed the visit of the CSTO
Secretary-General, which is purposeful and pertains to the growing
tensions at the borders of the CSTO member states in the recent
period, including the drastic aggravation of the situation along
the Armenian-Azeri and the Nagorno-Karabakh- Azeri line of contact
in August this year. He noted that unfortunately, Azeri provocative
actions in every possible way pose a threat to the fragile security
system of the area under the CSTO responsibility. By permanently
violating the ceasefire regime, Azerbaijan hampers the efforts of
the OSCE Minks Group aimed at peaceful resolution of the conflict.

The president underscored that the positions of a number of
CSTO partners on issues being of paramount importance to allies,
particularly on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, expressed in different
international platforms, do not correspond to the common spirit of
the negotiation process, contradict the statements and proposals of
the OSCE Minsk Group, as well as to the documents endorsed within
the framework of the CSTO. Ilham Aliyev’s bellicose and Armenophobic
statements do not rouse a keen response among our CSTO partners which
could have suppressed the adventurous desires of the Azeri leadership.

According to the president, in the end Azerbaijan continues to
aggravate tensions and initiate provocative actions rudely violating
his commitment to peaceful resolution of the conflict and the norms
of international humanitarian law. This was plainly testified by
the murder of Karen Petrosyan who had been taken prisoner by the
Azeri side.

Nikolay Bordyuzha noted that ahead of the preparation of the upcoming
session of the CSTO Council he is now studying the most acute security
problems that the CSTO member states face. According to him, there
are a few of them, including the situation pertaining to the mentioned
heightened tensions in summer. Referring to the meetings held by the
President of the CSTO Council Vladimir Putin in connection with those
events, Nikolay Bordyuzha expressed the opinion that it is necessary
to report and to discuss all those issues which can seriously affect
the security of the CSTO member states at the upcoming session of
the CSTO Council.
