Baku – APA. Azerbaijani Prime Minister Artur Rasizade has met with
representatives of an international conference on the subject of “New
opportunities in the development of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway
line–the historical Silk Road”.

At the meeting, attended by the transport ministers of Azerbaijan,
Turkey, Georgia, and Afghanistan, as well as the heads of relevant
authorities of Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Croatia, Kazakhstan and
other countries, Artur Rasizade touched upon the key role that the
North South and the East West transport corridors play in the common
geopolitical map of the region, the press service of the Cabinet of
Ministers told APA.

The prime minister reminded the guests of the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict, stressing that Armenia’s aggressive intentions are an
obstacle to regional cooperation and the implementation of joint
projects. He also added that there’s no solution to the conflict except
in compliance with the norms of international law, inviolability of
borders, and territorial integrity.

The parties had an extensive exchange of ideas over a variety of
issues of common interest.

Armenia In EaEU: The Beginning Of The Path

ARMENIA IN EAEU: THE BEGINNING OF THE PATH

Armenia signed the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty at the Minsk
summit at the end of last week. It is obvious that the signing of the
document is only the beginning of Yerevan’s path towards adaption to
the integration mechanism.

Mikhail Krotov, an advisor of the State Duma speaker, believes that
“it is too early to talk about full-fledged membership, some inner
state procedures need to be taken. The fact that the triplet has
turned into a quartet is a very important and a remarkable event…

Armenia’s joining the EaEU cannot be narrowed down to solely economic
issues. It is a continuation of the geopolitical choice people of
Armenia made many years ago to be with Russia.”

According to Krotov, “Armenian authorities – the government and the
parliament – have shown wonders of organized nature in fulfilling
over 280 points of the road map to join the EaEU. Everything has
been fulfilled perfectly, the optimal scheme has been implemented, in
other words, for the first time we have a model when a country without
common borders with other members of the Customs Union will take part
in it nonetheless. It is very important for a country to fix political
stability on the path of the Eurasian vector of Armenia’s development.

Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia are the most politically stable
countries and the most successful. The GDP per capita at par with
the consuming potential is $22,500 in Russia, $20,500 in Kazakhstan,
$16,500 in Belarus. Comparatively, Ukraine and Moldova have a GDP
per capita of $8,000 and $4,000.”

Oleg Noginsky, the chairman of the board of the Suppliers of the
Customs Union Association, says that “joining the EaEU itself is not
a remedy for salvation of the economy. The Eurasian Economic Union
is a field of opportunities that need intensive and scrupulous work,
starting with implementation of new technical regulations. It is
work with the Eurasian Economic Commission, the Eurasian Bank for
Reconstruction and Development… We need to understand that no one
will come and just give for no reason.”

Johnny Melikyan, an Armenian political analyst, the head of the Center
for Political and Legal Studies, reminded that Armenian opposition
organized protests in Yerevan on the day of signing of the EaEU
Treaty. “Many Western media with influence in Armenia used it to
show that some number of people speaks against that step of Armenian
authorities. In reality, the opposition field of Armenia has hardly
any power, except one pro-Western party, to speak against joining
the EaEU.”

Nonetheless, according to Johnny Melikyan, there is a problem with
popularizing the EaEU: “There is need for more public hearings, for
Armenian government to hold events, so that the common population,
residents of Armenia, understood why the prices for gas are low today;
why an ordinary Armenian citizen has opportunities to enter Russia
without problems. We all know how big the sum of transfers are in
the national GDP in the Republic of Armenia.”

Denis Tyurin, the director of the SCO Business Club, believes that
“Armenia’s joining the EaEU is not an end in some process, it is just
the beginning of big and very hard work for integration of Armenian
economy into the economy of countries of the Customs Union. There
will be difficulties of other nature on this path, what matters is
counterstanding international forces reluctant to form a powerful
bloc that would act in the interests of the countries, not interests
of the Western capital.”

According to Tyurin, “Western funds, different grant-givers show
great activeness to intensify negative moments associated with
public perception of Armenia’s joining the EaEU. We see growing
protest activeness, emergence of many different non-governmental
organizations operating using foreign funds, stirring up the public,
making different undesired forecasts for the future of Armenian
economy and the future of the civil society in Armenia come true. We
see discredit of the Armenian government with the money of Western
grant-givers in European and world media.”

Tyurin understands that “the negative tendencies clearly manifesting
in the country’s joining the Eurasian Economic Union deserve special
attention from the public of Armenia and the government. In other
words, Armenia has a long way towards establishment of economic ties
with Russia and other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union and
in overcoming the powerful information campaign initiated on the
territory of the country by Western states to discredit Armenia’s
participation in the Eurasian Economic Union.”

White House Plans Exhibition Of Rug Linked To Armenian Genocide

WHITE HOUSE PLANS EXHIBITION OF RUG LINKED TO ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Los Angeles Times
Oct 15 2014

By Matt Hansen

historic rug tied to the Armenian genocide will go on display at the
White House Visitor Center in November after several failed attempts
to display the piece.

The Ghazir rug was created by orphans of the genocide and presented
to President Calvin Coolidge in 1925. It will be featured alongside
other artifacts in an exhibition highlighting gifts to the United
States from groups that have benefited from American humanitarian aid.

“The rug … is a reminder of the close relationship between the
people of Armenia and the United States,” National Security Council
spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said in a statement announcing the
exhibition.

The tapestry, also called the Armenian Orphan Rug, has been in
storage for decades with only limited public appearances. In 2013,
the White House blocked a plan to display the rug at the Smithsonian
Institution, saying the planned exhibition, which would have featured
the release of a book about the piece, was a private event and thus
“not viewed as commensurate with the rug’s historical significance.”

Armenian American leaders and several U.S. senators objected to the
decision, saying the White House was bowing to political pressure
from the Turkish government, which denies a genocide took place.

Historians estimate that 1.2 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman
Turks during the political upheaval surrounding World War I. The
circumstances of the genocide remain contested by Turkey, which
maintains that the Armenians died of disease, starvation and being
caught in crossfire. The Ghazir rug was later created by orphans as
a goodwill gesture toward the U.S.

Members of the Armenian American community praised the decision to
display the rug.

“Turkey doesn’t want people to use the word ‘genocide,’ so the
United States doesn’t use the word ‘genocide,’ ” said Aram Hamparian,
executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America. “We
hope that this is the symbol of the White House finally doing the
right thing.”

The delay in exhibiting the rug stemmed from rules governing historic
objects rather than political considerations, senior administration
officials said.

For elected officials representing Armenian American communities,
the decision is a welcome relief after years of negotiation.

“It’s a powerful symbol of American generosity to victims of the
Armenian genocide,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D- Burbank) said. “I’m thrilled
that it will soon be on display.”

Schiff said he would continue to push for official federal recognition
of the genocide, especially in light of the event’s 100th anniversary
in April.

For Hamparian, the exhibition will be a success if it represents a
change in White House policy.

“The victory will be if this symbolizes progress by this White House
to speak the truth about the Armenian genocide,” he said.

Chess: Thirteen Year-Old Chess Prodigy On A Mission To Take Over The

THIRTEEN YEAR-OLD CHESS PRODIGY ON A MISSION TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD

Malaysian Digest
Oct 16 2014

16 October 2014 17:19

WASHINGTON: Samuel Sevian may only be 13, but the American chess
prodigy is in a hurry.

He wants to become the youngest Grandmaster in the history of the
United States.

That honour currently goes to Ray Robson, who was crowned two weeks
before his 15th birthday.

Samuel will be 15 in December next year and is just 14 points from
becoming Grandmaster.

“I want to have this title,” he tells AFP on the eve of a tournament
in Arlington, a suburb of Washington.

And the longer he can hold the title the better.

But once he has that in the bag, he will chase his next dream: to be
world champion.

If he sounds confident, he has good reason. In 2006, in his first
tournament, he became the youngest US Expert.

Then at nine years, 11 months and 23 days he broke another record
when he was crowned youngest American Master. And at 12 years and 10
months, the youngest US International Master.

The secret to his success? Practice. A lot of it.

He spends his mornings being schooled at home — he said no school
would accept his tournament-dominated schedule — and then plays
chess for up to six hours every afternoon.

Spending a single day without playing is unthinkable. And the thought
of losing a match?

“Losing is worse than dying,” says the taciturn boy wonder, who moved
his first chess piece at age five with his father Armen and was once
a world champion in his age group.

“I fell in love with the game,” he adds.

Now when father and son play chess together the pieces are arranged
to Armen’s advantage, otherwise Samuel wins too easily.

Playing blindfolded

Armen Sevian, a scientist who was born and raised in Armenia and
later moved to the United States, is understandably proud — but
also worried.

A chess Master himself in his youth — before he decided to take up
“other interests” — he is eager for his son not to become “a chess
freak.”

“I’ve tried to steer him away to something else, pretty much anything
else,” he says, explaining: “If you want to be at a high level,
you can’t do anything else. It’s hours of work and dedication.”

But it is dedication that Samuel appears to relish, and his father
admits that his son showed remarkable talent at a young age.

“At age eight, he played five games blindfolded at the same time,”
he says.

“He won all of them.”

Armen credits the Kasparov Chess Foundation — legendary chess
champion Garry Kasparov helps train Samuel online — for helping the
boy realize his dream.

“The Garry Kasparov foundation is the only help we get, for trainings.

It partially covers the expenses for the travels. It’s a great help,”
he says.

International Master Greg Shahade admits the talent shown by youngsters
like Samuel is frightening.

“Children are soaking up and taking in information at a faster rate
than ever before,” he says.

“There is information out there on the Internet that’s fun and easy
to read. There are tactics trainer programs that the top children
are nearly obsessed with.”

Samuel, unlike many of his opponents, does not memorize moves from
previous matches because it “is not necessary.”

Instead, he closely studies key positions of the game — opening,
middle and closing moves — preferring a more tactical approach.

“You just have to remember the key positions, not the whole game,”
he said.

He painstakingly studies books and chess computer programs, and as well
as getting advice from Kasparov, and meets international Grandmaster
Alexander Chernin every two or three months.

DEMOCRACY IS PEOPLE’S POWER, NOT THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPEAN UNION’S LORDSHIP OVER NATIONS – POLITICAL ANALYST

YEREVAN, October 17. /ARKA/. Democracy is people’s power, not the
United States and European Union’s lordship over nations, Sergey
Shakaryants, a political analyst, said Friday at a round-table
discussion ‘Challenges of Kyiv’s Maidan as Major Factor Destabilizing
the Region’.

“Now a fake democracy is being imposed on Armenians, Georgians and
Ukrainians, and we showed our vulnerability when joined the planet
democratization race,” he said.

In his words, now the mediaeval sword law is reviving now in the
politics, and if the United States supports Albanians, they can afford
to fly a drone carrying a map of the Great Albania in Belgrade. And
nobody condemns them, the opposite – EU ambassadors are supporting
them.

“If I display a map of the Great Armenia, I will be blamed for
undermining Armenian-Turkish reconciliation process…” he said adding
that it is necessary to ward off substitution of notions.

“It can be done easily – if foes are uniting, we should do the same,”
he said adding that nations should cooperate to foil the conspiracy
against Caucasus or Syria. “We are victims of siege and we are
strangled by a blockade. We should break it as soon as possible,
and it had better happen before 2020.” –0—-

Armenia Is Moving To Where No One Knows What May Happen – Hovhannes

ARMENIA IS MOVING TO WHERE NO ONE KNOWS WHAT MAY HAPPEN – HOVHANNES IGITYAN

14:00 * 17.10.14

With respect to Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union
(EEU), Expert Hovhannes Igityan told reporters on Friday that it is
generally admitted that Armenia is joining an alliance whose members
do not know anything about further developments.

“The EEU member-states have not so far specified their economic
relations. It is clear that Armenia will find itself in an even worse
situation,” Mr Igityan said.

In contrast to the European Union (EU), the EEU does not set any
requirements. It is up to individual states to decide on how well
they fit the union.

“Everyone, including the government members, who are trying to make
favorable comments on Armenia’s accession to the EEU, say that threats
have been neutralized and numerous issues settled,” the expert said.

With respect to the statements on a customs station between Armenia
and Nagorno-Karabakh, Mr Igityan said that he considers it a mere
formality.

Armenia’s accession to the EEU will result in a price rise because
Armenia will thus violate all its agreements with other states.

“And the sanctions against Russia may be applied to Armenia as well.

Even government members do not conceal the fact.”

Christian Bale In Talks To Play Steve Jobs

CHRISTIAN BALE IN TALKS TO PLAY STEVE JOBS

13:16, 16 Oct 2014

Cristian Bale is eyeing the role of Apple founder Steve Jobs.

The 40-year-old English actor is in talks to play the charismatic
tech genius who gave the world the iMac, the iPod and the iPhone
in Sony’s upcoming biopic, The Times has confirmed. The Hollywood
Reporter broke the news.

Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “Trainspotting”) is directing the
film, which may be called “Jobs,” from a script by Aaron Sorkin, who
won a screenwriting Oscar for the Facebook drama “The Social Network”
(released by Sony in 2010).

Sorkin’s screenplay is based on Walter Isaacson’s bestselling
biography “Steve Jobs,” acquired by Sony around the time of Jobs’
death in October 2011.

The film has had a few twists and turns: Leonardo DiCaprio previously
circled the Jobs role but ultimately passed, and “Gone Girl” director
David Fincher was in talks to helm the film at one point.

Bale and Boyle are set to shoot the film in spring 2015. Sorkin
said that writing a film about Jobs “is a little like writing about
the Beatles. There are so many people out there that know him and
revere him.”
