Freedom fighter Suren Sargsyan is now undergoing tests at the Erebuni
medical centre. He has bruises on his face and various injuries on
his head and face.

Talking to Aravot.am, Mr Sarsgayn said four people in masks had been
waiting for him outside his house since early morning. When he came
out of the house, they got out of the car and attacked him, beating
him on the head and face. They asked the freedom fighter whether he
knew ‘Mher of Tokhmakh [Republican MP Mher Sedrakyan] to spread such
rumors about the lawmaker?

Anyway, Suren Sargsyan believes that he was attacked by members of
Serzh Sargsyan’s circles.

Polish Archaeologists Make Interesting Discoveries In Armenia

POLISH ARCHAEOLOGISTS MAKE INTERESTING DISCOVERIES IN ARMENIA

by Karina Manukyan

Wednesday, December 10, 12:00

Archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw
discovered evidence of destruction and capture of the ancient city of
Metsamor, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the vicinity
of Yerevan.

“In the entire area of research we found layers of burning and ash.

The city was probably captured by the army of Argishti I, the ruler
of Urartu” – told PAP (PAP – Science and Scholarship in Poland)
Krzysztof Jakubiak, head of the project.

Argishti I was the king of Urartu, the biblical Kingdom of Ararat in
the Armenian Highlands. During his reign, the boundaries of the state
expanded to the Caucasus, the area of today’s Yerevan. Other findings
of Polish archaeologists are evidence of the fighting and cruelty.

Among them is a skeleton of about 30 years old woman, whose head was
cut off, and of another person with a split skull.

“We believe that both of them were killed during the attack on the
city” – added Dr. Jakubiak. The discovered remains were not buried
in the tombs, only randomly scattered among the buildings of the
so-called lower town. What drew the attention of researchers was a
small amount of finds in the form of historical objects, which may
illustrate the scale of predatory Urartu invasion.

The invaders did not spare the holy shrines. Archaeologists found
a small, oval urban sanctuary, which had been looted during the
invasion. Inside, on stone platforms, they discovered broken pottery
and one vessel preserved in its entirety, made of stone. Metsamor is
a protected archaeological reserve. Excavations within the reserve
have been conducted for almost 50 years. Previous studies have shown
that during the heyday from the fourth to the second millennium BC,
the settlement occupied more than 10 hectares and was surrounded by
monumental walls.

In the early days of iron period, from the eleventh to the ninth
century, Metsamor had grown to nearly 100 acres. The central part of
the fortress was surrounded by temple complexes with seven shrines. At
that time, it was one of the most important political and cultural
centres in the Aras Valley.

>From the eighth century BC, Metsamor became part of the Kingdom of
Urartu. The place was continuously inhabited until the seventeenth
century. Polish archaeologists began excavations in Metsamor in 2013.

The project was possible thanks to an agreement signed between the
Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw – in consultation with
the authorities of the Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology UW – with
the Institute of Archaeology of the Armenian Academy of Sciences of
and the Ministry of Culture of Armenia.

Nairit: Chemical plant administration stands by back wages repayment
pledge

Workers of Nairit, a giant chemical plant in Armenia known worldwide
for its chloroprene rubber production, staged several protests near
government offices in Yerevan in recent days demanding their back
wages as well as more clarity over the fate of the enterprise.

Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan received a delegation of the
protesters to hear their complaints on Tuesday and promised to hold
another meeting later this week to learn more about the problems of
the mostly idling plant. At the same time, it was announced that the
workers will be paid their wages for one month by the end of the year.

Nairit, which was built on the outskirts of Yerevan in the 1930s,
supplied up to 30 types of chemical products during the Soviet times.

But the plant was closed in 1989 for environmental reasons. It was
partly resumed in 1992 after Armenia gained independence. Nairit
is the only plant in the post-Soviet space to have the capacity to
produce chloroprene rubber. It is one of the largest enterprises in
Armenia employing a staff of around 3,000. But for years most of the
workers have been furloughed as the plant has either idled or worked
at fraction of its capacity. The plant dogged by financial problems
owes wages for up to 18 months to its workers. The total debt at
present is estimated at some $15 million.

In 2006 Rhinoville Property Limited Company, a 90-percent stakeholder
at Nairit, took a loan from the CIS Interstate Bank mortgaging the
plant. It later failed to repay the loan and in January 2014 the
Moscow Arbitration Court obliged the offshore-registered company to
pay to the CIS Interstate Bank a sum of $107.95 million on account
of outstanding loan commitments.

On Tuesday, the plant’s management assured its employees that it is
committed to clearing the wage arrears. Many workers fear the plant
may soon be declared bankrupt and its obligations on accumulated
wages debts will remain on paper at best.

The statement issued by the Nairit administration says that the
company will sign new contracts with nearly 500 employees, which
actually confirms that more than 1,000 workers will be eventually
laid off in February.

Nairit’s former director Karen Israyelyan believes that the kind
of approach to a giant industrial plant is depriving Armenia of its
major asset.

“If a country like China turns to Armenia for cooperation in the
chemical industry, it means that even there they understand the
value of the enterprise. But we are driving this enterprise towards
bankruptcy, shutting it down, this is absurd,” he told ArmeniaNow,
referring to cooperation projects carried out with China since 2002.

The specialist stresses that Nairit won’t survive another closure
which will also prove a major blow to the country’s chemical industry.

“When the chemical industry was developing on the basis of this plant
we had students, a faculty that trained specialists who later were
hired by the enterprise, but the closure of the plant will spell an
end for the industry in which Armenia used to be a powerhouse during
the Soviet times,” says Israyelyan.

The former Nairit director says that by working at its full capacity
today the plant can employ 2,100 people. He claims that the extra
personnel that were hired in addition to that number in recent years
were rather a liability. Those highly paid people, Israyelyan argues,
“were bloodsuckers who did not provide work worth a penny.”

Israyelyan is surprised that workers at present demand not the
resumption of the plant, but the repayment of the wages. “I think it
is wrong to demand this money, they [the furloughed workers] did not
do any good. Who are we demanding this money from, the state? What
is the state’s obligation on repaying these debts?” he queries.

Azerbaidjan : Le Role De La Russie Dans La Destruction D’un Helicopt

AZERBAIDJAN : LE ROLE DE LA RUSSIE DANS LA DESTRUCTION D’UN HELICOPTERE ARMENIEN

AZERBAIDJAN

a declare Arastun Orujlu.

> a declare Orujlu.

En fin de compte, peu importe ce qui se passe a Moscou, l’Azerbaïdjan
est prete a toute eventualite, a declare Shahinoglu. > a declare Shahinoglu.

About Armenian Heritage Park on the Greenway

Armenian Heritage Park is a gift to the City of Boston and the
Commonwealth from Armenian-Americans. Together, we welcome all to
celebrate the immigrant experience.

Our Park graces the public space with design features for all ages:

Abstract Sculpture, a split dodecahedron, commemorates the immigrant
experience.

Annually, the Sculpture is reconfigured, symbolic of all who were
pulled apart from their country of origin and came to these
Massachusetts shores, establishing themselves in new and different
ways. The Sculpture sits atop a Reflecting Pool; its waters wash over
its sides and re-emerge as a single jet of water at the Labyrinth’s
center. The Sculpture is dedicated to lives lost during the Armenian
Genocide of 1915-1923 and all genocides that have followed.

Labyrinth, a circular winding path paved in grass and inlaid stone,
celebrates life’s journey. A single jet of water marks its center,
representing hope and rebirth. Art, Service, Science and Commerce are
etched around its circle in tribute to contributions made to American
life and culture. This is the only Labyrinth on public land in the
Northeast. Armenian Heritage Park and its Abstract Sculpture and
Labyrinth are recognized as Public Art.

The Park on the Greenway is between Faneuil Hall Marketplace and
Christopher Columbus Park at the intersection of Cross Street and
Atlantic Avenue.

Armenian Heritage Park and its endowed funds to support the annual
reconfiguration of the Sculpture, the Park’s ongoing care and
maintenance, and public programs including the annual Najarian Lecture
on Human Rights at Faneuil Hall have been funded by generous
individuals, foundations and organizations.

BAKU: Ways Of Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Settlement Discussed In Brus

WAYS OF NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT SETTLEMENT DISCUSSED IN BRUSSELS

Trend, Azerbaijan
Dec 9 2014

9 December 2014, 16:33 (GMT+04:00)

By Elena Kosolapova – Trend:

The conflicts in the post-Soviet area, including the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict, were discussed during the Forum of Young Leaders organized
by the European Parliament in Brussels as part of the EU program
“Eastern Partnership”.

The forum participants, including young journalists, political
analysts, researchers in the field of international relations and
social sciences from the Eastern Partnership and the EU countries
were informed about the nature of the conflict, the negotiations for
its settlement and the current situation.

The discussion was held under the chairmanship of the well-known expert
in the field of conflict transformation and peace building Natalya
Mirimanova. She expressed regret that the EU is making insufficient
efforts to resolve this problem.

She said that the EU must more actively participate in resolving the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“The longer any conflict remains unresolved, the more difficult is
to solve it,” she said.

The conflicts in the breakaway regions of Georgia, Transnistria,
the situation in Crimea and eastern regions of Ukraine were also
discussed during the forum.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied
20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and
seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs
of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently
holding peace negotiations.

ANKARA: Former Istanbul Deputy Governor Testifies As Suspect In Dink

FORMER ISTANBUL DEPUTY GOVERNOR TESTIFIES AS SUSPECT IN DINK TRIAL

Thousands of protesters gather around a banner thar reads ” We are

December 09, 2014, Tuesday/ 14:03:07/ TODAY’S ZAMAN / ISTANBUL

Former İstanbul Vice Governor Ergun Gungör testified to an
İstanbul court on Tuesday as a suspect in the murder trial of late
Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink.

According to media reports, the court heard Gungör, who was in office
at the time of the 2007 murder, for two-and-a-half hours. He was later
released pending trial. In recent years there have been claims in the
media that Gungör and a National Intelligence Organization (MİT)
member invited Dink to the İstanbul Governor’s Office to warn him of
“possible dangers if he continues making controversial statements.”

Charges against state officials who might have been held accountable
in the Dink trial had earlier been dropped by a prosecutor. However,
in early June of this year, the Bakırköy 8th High Criminal Court
annulled the prosecutor’s decision, paving the way for the prosecution
of nine officials, including Gungör and former İstanbul Police
Chief Celalettin Cerrah, who are believed to either have intentionally
tried to kill Dink or been negligent in preventing his death.

Dink was shot dead on Jan. 19, 2007, by 17-year-old hitman Ogun
Samast. Dink was leaving the building of the Agos weekly, of which
he was the editor-in-chief, in Å~^iÅ~_li, İstanbul, when he was
shot. Samast was apprehended and tried by a juvenile court, as
he was 17 at the time of the crime, and was sentenced to 22 years
in prison. Dink became the 62nd journalist in Turkey to have been
assassinated since 1909.

MY FATHER’S DESTINY : THE GOLGOTHA OF ARMENIA MINOR

By MassisPost
Updated: December 9, 2014

Transl. by Diran Meghreblian with an introduction by Yves Ternon 176
pp, illust., ISBN 9781909382152. pb. US$24.00 / UK£16.00

Every destiny is unique, but that of a survivor stands out because
it wasn’t interrupted when the multitude were destroyed. He is like
a piece of wreckage that is thrown by the waves onto a beach after
a storm to reveal the scale of the disaster and cerry with it – its
echo reverberating from generation to generation – the last scream
of the dead: ‘Do not forget us’ -Yves Ternon (from introduction to
My Father’s Destiny)

My Father’s Destiny is one of few English language accounts of the
Armenian Genocide in Sivas, the province with the largest Armenian
population in the Ottoman Empire. It work is composed of a translation
of Aram Gureghian’s memoirs written at the age of 16 shortly after the
Armenian Genocide; the Gureghian family’s subsequent fate in France
and Soviet Armenia; and a specific account of the Armenian Genocide
in Sivas – the ancestral homeland of the Gureghian family. This
highly readable work was originally published in French (1999),
then in Turkish (2004), and is now available in English.

Our Non-Ally In Ankara

OUR NON-ALLY IN ANKARA

Review & Outlook

Turkey bugs out of the anti-ISIS coalition. Why not a base in
Kurdistan?

Updated Sept. 15, 2014 8:28 a.m. ET

Was it only a week ago that Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel listed a
“core coalition” of 10 countries willing to join the U.S. effort to
destroy the Islamic State? Since then Britain has categorically ruled
out military strikes in Syria, while Germany has ruled out any use
of force. Now Turkey is bugging out.

The Turkish abdication goes a step further than the Brits or Germans.

Not only will Ankara take no military action, it will also forbid the
U.S. from using the U.S. air base in Incirlik–located fewer than
100 miles from the Syrian border–to conduct air strikes against
the terrorists. That will complicate the Pentagon’s logistical and
reconnaissance challenges, especially for a campaign that’s supposed
to take years.

The U.S. military will no doubt find work-arounds for its air campaign,
just as it did in 2003 when Turkey also refused requests to let the
U.S. launch attacks on Iraq from its soil in order to depose Saddam
Hussein. Turkey shares a 750-mile border with Syria and Iraq, meaning
it could have made a more-than-symbolic contribution to a campaign
against ISIS. So much for that.

Harder to get around is the reality of a Turkish government that
is a member of NATO but long ago stopped acting like an ally of
the U.S. or a friend of the West. Former U.S. Ambassador to Turkey
Francis Ricciardone declared this week that the Turkish government
“frankly worked” with the al-Nusrah Front–the al Qaeda affiliate
in Syria–along with other terrorist groups. Ankara also looked the
other way as foreign jihadis used Turkey as a transit point on their
way to Syria and Iraq. Mr. Ricciardone came close to being declared
persona non grata by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government
last December.

This history–along with the Erdogan government’s long record of
support for Hamas in Gaza and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt–explains
why the excuses now being made for Turkey’s nonfeasance ring hollow.

ISIS has taken Turkish diplomats and their family members hostage in
Mosul inside Iraq, but Turkey is not the only country whose citizens
have been taken hostage. Ankara also fears that arms sent to ISIS
opponents may wind up in the hands of the PKK, the Kurdish terrorist
group. But that doesn’t justify shutting down Incirlik for a U.S.

operation.

The unavoidable conclusion is that the U.S. needs to find a better
regional ally to fight ISIS. True to type, Arab states such as Saudi
Arabia are proving to be reluctant partners, at least in public, and
it’s unclear how much the new government in Baghdad can contribute
before its army regroups.

The better bet is with the Kurds, who have the most on the line and
are willing to provide the boots on the ground that others can’t or
won’t. Incirlik has been a home for U.S. forces for nearly 60 years,
but perhaps it’s time to consider replacing it with a new U.S. air
base in Kurdish territory in northern Iraq. America may no longer
have friends in Ankara, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have options
in the Middle East.
