New Pipeline May Be Called "Turkish Stream" – Erdogan

NEW PIPELINE MAY BE CALLED “TURKISH STREAM” – ERDOGAN

YEREVAN, December 11. /ARKA/. The new gas pipeline to be laid down
via Turkey to replace the scrapped “South Stream” may be called
“Turkish Stream”, Turkey’s president Tayiip Erdogan said yesterday,
as cited by RIA Novosti.

“We decided that the new “South Stream” can be called “Turkish Stream”
as proposed by president Putin”, Erdogan said at an oil and gas sector
workshop in Ankara.

The new undersea pipeline will be laid through Turkey to the border
with Greece. Turkey and Europe will be taking as much gas as they need,
this means Turkey will serve an energy hub for the entire region,
according to Erdogan.

Russia’s Gazprom natural gas giant signed a memorandum of understanding
with Turkey’s Botas on December 1 on constructing an offshore gas
pipeline across the Black Sea towards Turkey. The memorandum was signed
in the presence of the Russian and the Turkish presidents. The new
gas pipeline will have a capacity of 63 billion cubic metres, with 14
billion cubic metres slated for Turkish consumers (identical amount
is being delivered via the Balkan Corridor) and nearly 50 billion
cubic meters conveyed to the border between Turkey and Greece, where
a delivery point will be arranged, TASS reported. -0–

Armenian Memorial Faces More Obstacles In Geneva

ARMENIAN MEMORIAL FACES MORE OBSTACLES IN GENEVA

SwissInfo, Switzerland
Dec 10 2014

The Swiss foreign ministry has recommended not erecting an Armenian
genocide memorial in Geneva as originally planned in another setback
for the project, according to Swiss public radio.

The RTS reported on Tuesday that a letter from Foreign Minister – and
serving Swiss President – Didier Burkhalter addressed to the canton
of Geneva recommended turning down the construction of a memorial
“Les Reverbères de la Memoire” in the city’s Ariana Park, which is
near the United Nations.

This is the latest twist in the long-running saga over the monument,
which started in 2008. Originally designed to be located in the
Geneva Old Town, the memorial was due to be moved to the park. But
this could again be subject to change, the RTS has learned.

Following a meeting between Geneva cantonal ministers Francois
Longchamp and Antonio Hodgers and Burkhalter two weeks ago in Bern, a
letter was addressed to Geneva recommending that the relevant cantonal
authority “refuses to grant a building permit in the planned location”.

This is in order to “preserve an impartial and peaceful setting
allowing the United Nations and other international organisations to
carry out their functions in the best possible working conditions”,
according to the text seen by RTS.

New location?

However, the Geneva city authorities still want to erect the
eight-metre bronze memorial, by French artist Melik Ohanian, in the
Ariana Park but say other locations will be considered if they are
refused a permit by the canton. Beaulieu and Cropettes parks are also
under consideration.

Supporters of the memorial have criticised the latest development.

Ueli Leuenberger, one of the co-presidents of Swiss parliamentary
group Switzerland-Armenia, told RTS that he felt that Switzerland
had given in to pressure from the Turkish authorities.

The Armenians say Ottoman Turks slaughtered up to 1.8 million Armenians
in a planned genocide between 1915 and 1918. Turkey denies the mass
killings were genocide, saying the death toll is inflated.

The Swiss House of Representatives recognised the Armenian massacre
as genocide in 2003, but neither the Senate nor the cabinet has
officially done so.

(K. Jakubiak)

WARSAW, POLAND–Krzysztof Jakubiak of the University of Warsaw
unearthed evidence of the destruction and capture of the ancient
city of Metsamor in Armenia. “In the entire area of research we found
layers of burning and ash. The city was probably captured by the army
of Argishti I, the ruler of Urartu,” he told Science & Scholarship
in Poland. A woman’s skeleton missing its head, and another set of
remains with an injured skull, are thought to represent victims of the
attack. Their bodies had not been buried, but were found among the
town’s buildings. Smashed pottery was also found on stone platforms
in one of the city’s seven shrines.

Tip Top Is The French Crime/Sex Police Dramedy You Didn’t Know You W

TIP TOP IS THE FRENCH CRIME/SEX POLICE DRAMEDY YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU WANTED

The Village Voice
Dec 10 2014

By Alan Scherstuhl

Serge Bozon’s smart, surprising, marvelously realized French
crime-and-sex police drama/comedy distinguishes itself with trenchant
plotting, inspired framing, and performances that honor true human
feeling even as they lunge into the screwball.

The leads, both cops investigating murder and possible police
corruption, are flawed and fascinating women played with sharp-elbowed
wit by Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Kiberlain. The case is complex
and satisfying, involving a police snitch in a small town’s Armenian
community, and Bozon is biting — and a bit heartsick — on the topic
of the cops’ relationship with local Muslims.

But what stings and pleases most, here, is the odd-couple lead: brisk,
brusque Huppert, commanding and pitiless, not caring how accidentally
rude she is to her new partner (Kiberlain), a shy, sly Peeping Tom
very excited to go undercover as a very available woman.

A barbed friendship develops, especially when the two discover each
other’s taste for kink: Huppert’s alpha likes getting roughed up in
the sack, Kiberlain’s beta is eager to try it — and, in the meantime,
she ogles the ludicrously hunky chap who washes dishes shirtless in
a kitchen window across from her hotel room, the vision a hilarious
gender-flip on those scenes of Susan Sarandon citrusing herself
in Atlantic City. Bozon’s first feature in seven years showcases a
once-promising director now in full flourish, crafting singular work.

Armenian War Veteran Attacked By 4 Masked Men

ARMENIAN WAR VETERAN ATTACKED BY 4 MASKED MEN

12.10.2014 17:24 epress.am

Today, at around 10am, four masked men attacked and beat veteran
and Union of Veterans’ board member Suren Sargsyan, writes Azatutyun
Radio. Sargsyan is currently at the Erebuni medical center.

The medical center informed Azatutyun that the veteran received a
craniocerebral injury, is in stable condition and that his life is
not in danger.

In an interview with the radio station Suren Sargsyan said he
considered the incident as a way to keep veterans silent and stressed
that they are not scared and are not going to give up.

Yesterday, the media reported that two Karabakh war veterans and
Union of Veterans’ members, Aparan squad commander Razmik Petrosyan
and Arabo squad commander Manvel Yeghiazaryan were also beaten.

After the latter incidents the Union released a statement noting
that the attack was directed against the union’s activities and
intends to silence the veterans, who fight against unlawfulness,
through terrorist acts.

Suren Sargsyan told Aravot.am (ARM) that during the attack, the four
men asked him “do you even know who Mher of Tokhmakh is that you speak
about him?” The veteran, however, thought that the attackers were part
of Serzh Sargsyan’s gang, and not Republican Party MP Mher Sedrakyan’s
(aka Tokhmakhi Mher) sent men. According to him, the attackers gave
those questions in order to distract him. The veteran noted that he
was preparing to publish the veterans’ statement regarding MP Mher
Sedrakyan’s statement about Armenia’s membership into the EEU.

Earlier, Sedrakyan had stated that Armenia is used to living under
occupation.

Armenia’s Membership In Eurasian Economic Union To Strengthen Its So

ARMENIA’S MEMBERSHIP IN EURASIAN ECONOMIC UNION TO STRENGTHEN ITS SOVEREIGNTY AND SPUR ITS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

YEREVAN, December 10. /ARKA/. Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian
Economic Union will strengthen its sovereignty and spur its economic
development, Hayk Babukhanyan, an MP from the Republican Party of
Armenia, told journalists on Wednesday. On December 4, the Armenian
National Assembly ratified the agreement on Armenia’s accession to the
Eurasian Economic Union. It means Armenia, along with Russia, Belarus
and Kazakhstan, becomes a full member of the union. The agreement
takes force on January 1, 2015. Babukhanyan said. In his opinion, Armenia’s membership in
the union gives the country additional opportunities for developing
its economy and strengthening its sovereignty, and Armenia should
manage to take advantage of them. Contrary to many people’s opinion,
he said, Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union enhances
its sovereignty by increasing its defense, including economic defense.

Babukhanyan pointed out that unlike European Union member countries,
new partners and associate members, all the members of the Eurasian
Economic Union will enjoy equal rights. Besides, the Eurasian Economic
Union member countries are closer to Armenia in terms of mentality
and values, including Christian values. As for some discord among
the union countries, Babukhanyan said this is natural in unions of
various countries. he said. —-0—

It’s Possible To Work In A Toxic Environment For 14 Hours, But There

IT’S POSSIBLE TO WORK IN A TOXIC ENVIRONMENT FOR 14 HOURS, BUT THERE’S NO PAY

12.10.2014 16:41 epress.am

The rubber and latex producing Nairit Factory employees’ mission has
turned into an endless struggle to obtain their salaries of 18 months.

The Chloroprene production shift manager, 43-year old Ruben noted
that they received their salary for June of 2013 only recently, and
are currently trying to figure out how to cover their debts with this
small sum.

The Nairit Factory CSJC, where the government holds 10 percent shares,
has violated their workers’ rights multiple times in the last years.

According to Ruben, they initially paid every 40 days, then every
45 days, and when they did, they paid only one month’s salary, and
that’s how the debt slowly accrued. Then the 1,200 idle workers and
1,000 workers would receive their salaries only after organizing a
protest in front of the government building or presidential palace.

The shift manager who works at the highly toxic factory told us that
they increased the employees salaries by 50% in 2009 after an accident
at the production unit, the initial salary they received was about
120,000 AMD ($270+/-), now it is 175,000 AMD ($390+/-).

Other production units were promised a salary increase but it never
happened and the salaries are still low. At the factory, employees
receive 80 – 100,000 AMD ($180 – $230), while shift managers receive
10% more.

Before the situation with the idle workers the factory worked
in 2 shifts of 10 and 14 hours, certain production units had 12
hour shifts. To the question whether it is possible to work for 14
continuous hours in a toxic environment, Ruben responded positively,
“Believe it, it was possible and we’ve done it. It is difficult
sometimes when you don’t have time to wipe your nose, but we’ve done
it.” They work a total of 14 days in a month, about 144 hours, which
is in the limist of what the labor code permits. The long shifts allow
for people to come to the factory less often. That is important for
the staff because they pay less for transport costs.

Another employee, Hayk, who has been working for more than 30 years
at the factory, agreed to the benefits of the shifts. He stated from
his experience that the factory, in contrast to when it was under
Soviet control, does not provide a bus for workers, despite the fact,
that public transport near the factory does not work at late hours,
and coming to work or going home before or after night shifts is a
real issue.

According to Ruben, he has never heard employees raise the issue of
short shifts or demand transportation, it has never bothered anyone.

Currently, since the factory is not producing, the shift is 24 hours
because there is not the same work intensity, said Ruben. Today,
the most important issue for Nairit employees is to receive their 18
month salaries, while the President and government are not promising
much to the workers.

GALUST SAHAKYAN: PEOPLE ARE NOT READY TO FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION (VIDEO)

13:13 | December 10,2014 | Social

Armenia has shown considerable progress in the fight against
corruption. Transparency International Anti-corruption Centre says
the situation has not deteriorated, but it is too early to speak
about its betterment.

The studies conducted by the Centre show that the e judiciary, health,
police and education sectors are the most corrupt institutions.

International experience has shown that social acceptability and
tolerance for corruption promote the spread of the phenomenon. Though
our citizens admit that corruption is one of the key concerns in
Armenia, they do not admit their guilt.
