regard, the Turkish Foreign Ministry is carrying out broad and
large-scale measures. In 2015, the ministry and other relevant
authorities will work in a coordinated manner. I’m confident that they
will be able to overcome baseless claims”.

Uruguay’s Foreign Ministry calls for recognition of Nagorno Karabakh

Uruguay’s Foreign Ministry calls for recognition of Nagorno Karabakh

23:45, 05 Jan 2015

The Uruguayan Foreign Ministry asked for the international recognition
of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh and the right of its people to
self-determinationon Sunday January 4, after a meeting with Armenian
representatives, Prensa Armenia agency reports.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay Luis Almagro met with
members of the Armenian National Committee of Uruguay and Mario
Nalpatian, member of the International Armenian National Committee, to
discuss the situation in the South Caucasus and the continuing
violations of the ceasefire by Azerbaijan, which merited a strong
condemnation from the Minister.

Almagro stressed the `need for a peaceful settlement of Nagorno
Karabakh taking particular account of the right to self-determination
of the Armenian people and the principle of territorial integrity of
the Republic of Armenia under its borders as an independent country
between May 1918 and December 1920³.
`In September 2011 the Minister of Foreign Affairs made public that
Uruguay had begun to analyze the case of Nagorno Karabakh in order to
take a State decision about it,’ said the representatives of Armenian
National Committee of Uruguay. `Since then there have been meetings of
the Chancellor and senior officials of the Uruguayan government with
the Foreign Ministers of the Republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan and
with the respective ambassadors in Uruguay’.

`On the legislative front, dozens of legislators had the opportunity
to meet the President of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh during his
visit to the Uruguayan Parliament in December 2011. In turn, a
parliamentary delegation led by President of the Chamber of
representatives Jorge Orrico and legislators of all parliamentary
parties visited the Republic in November 2012, where they met with
officials of the executive and legislative branches, as well as with
civil society of Nagorno Karabakh. The subject has also been present
on the visits by legislators and political leaders of all parties to
Azerbaijan from 2011 to date. More recently, the issue was addressed
in a joint declaration signed by Presidents Jose Mujica and Serzh
Sargsyan in July 2014, on the occasion of the official visit of the
president of the Republic of Armenia to Uruguay. Both presidents
stressed the need for a peaceful solution to the Nagorno Karabakh
conflict and supported the mediation of the Minsk Group of the OSCE,’
added the Armenian National Committee of Uruguay in a statement.

The official text is posted on the website of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of Uruguay.

BAKU: So-called Armenian genocide threatening regional peace

So-called Armenian genocide threatening regional peace

5 January 2015, 17:55 (GMT+04:00)
By Sara Rajabova

Turkish official said the so-called Armenian genocide is a threat to
peace in the region.

Mazhar Bagli, a board member of Turkey’s ruling Justice and
Development Party told Trend Agency that Turkey rejects as baseless
Armenian claim that the events of 1915 amount to “Armenian genocide”.

“Turkey has repeatedly expressed readiness to open its archives to
investigate the events of 1915 and the country has opened all its
archives,” Bagli said.

Armenia and the Armenian lobby claim that Turkey’s predecessor, the
Ottoman Empire has allegedly carried out “genocide” against Armenians
living in Anatolia in 1915.

The Armenians are going to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the myth
in 2015. Armenia commemorates the alleged genocide on April 24 each
year.

Bagli said Armenians’ claims regarding the “genocide” will eventually
lose its meaning thanks the development of relations with brotherly
Azerbaijan and other brotherly nations.

Turkey will easily be able to cope with this issue with its increasing
power, he said.

Strengthening the efforts to promote the so-called “genocide” in the
world, Armenians have achieved a recognition for its empty claim by
the parliaments of some countries.

Turkey supports the creation of a joint historical commission to
investigate the events of 1915, but Armenia is unwilling to disclose
its archives as it fears revealing what the archives may hold.

Bagli also noted that the double standards with respect to Azerbaijan
are unacceptable, noting that as always, Turkey will support
Azerbaijan’s position in the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict.

“Unfortunately, today the international community is indifferent to
Azerbaijan’s problems related to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” said
Bagli.

He added that the mass murder of Azerbaijanis in Nagorno-Karabakh and
other occupied territories is marked in Turkey.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally
recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent
regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus
neighbor that caused a brutal war in the early 1990s. Long-standing
efforts by U.S, Russian and French mediators have been largely
fruitless so far.

As a result of the military aggression of Armenia, over 20,000
Azerbaijanis were killed, 4,866 are reported missing and almost
100,000 were injured, and 50,000 were disabled.

The UN Security Council has passed four resolutions on Armenian
withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been
enforced to this day.

U.S. Denies Turkey Leftover Warships

U.S. Denies Turkey Leftover Warships

January 5, 2015 – 11:14am
by Joshua Kucera

The U.S. Congress has approved the handover of some leftover naval
vessels to allies, pointedly excluding Turkey from the list of
recipients.

In late December, the U.S. finally approved the long-delayed handover
of six naval frigates to Mexico and Taiwan. But the bill passed
Congress only after Turkey (along with Pakistan and Thailand) were
eliminated as potential recipients, for a variety of political
reasons.

In the 2012 version of the “Naval Transfer Act,” Turkey was to receive
two Oliver Hazard Perry class guided missile frigates, the USS
Halyburton and the USS Thach, which are being decommissioned by the
U.S. Navy.

But the inclusion of Turkey proved controversial, as members of
Congress pointed out Turkey’s increasingly hostile stance toward
Israel and its threats against natural gas exploration by American
companies near Cyprus. “I believe we should hold off on sending
powerful warships to Turkey and encourage the government in Ankara to
take a less belligerent approach to their neighbors,” said
Representative Eliot Engel during that debate.

That bill was ultimately defeated, and an alliance of Greek, Jewish,
and Armenian lobbying groups took credit. But the defeat was only a
symbolic one, says Can Devrim Yaylali, a Turkish naval blogger, who
notes that the frigates in question were significantly more poorly
equipped than the ships Turkey currently operates (including those of
the same class) and could only have been cannibalized for spare parts.

“The lack of these frigates will not have any effect on the Turkish
Navy at all from a technical point of view,” Yaylali tells The Bug
Pit. “If the US lawmakers tried to give some kind of a signal to the
Turkish government by not adding Turkey to the list of the nations
that may get a frigate is beyond my understanding. But if they did;
the message was not delivered as the medium is not the correct one.”
