Red carpet has stars in revolt

Red carpet has stars in revolt

by ANNA BYRNE, STYLIST AND FASHIONISTA

UNLESS you were living under a rock during the Australian Open, you’d
have heard about Channel Seven sports commentator Ian Cohen descending
into embarrassing post-match territory by asking Eugenie Bouchard to
“do a twirl”. Sure it was an amazing outfit but a male player would
have never been subjected to such casual sexism.

Then Amal Clooney, on her way to the European Court of Human Rights in
Strasbourg to prosecute a Turkish politician accused of denying the
1915 Armenian genocide, was asked by a reporter if she was wearing
Versace. Quick off the mark, Clooney replied that she was wearing Ede
& Ravenscroft, referring to the makers of legal robes in England since
1689.

Like any half-sentient human being – I am a feminist. I also write
about fashion. I also occasionally write about what women wear. And
while I don’t see these things as necessarily contradictory, my heart
is aflutter with the thought that at Monday’s Oscars, actresses might
finally be storming the metaphorical barricades in their spangled
haute couture.

At this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, Julianne Moore, Reese
Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston made headlines by taking the
revolutionary step of refusing to stick their paws in E!’s Mani Cam (a
gimmicky box that proves there is not an ounce of skin that will go
unjudged, honing in on nail colours and finger bling.) Then enter Amy
Poehler’s organisation Smart Girls, which is continuing the pageantry
revolt by insisting women shouldn’t be subjected to inane questioning
about their shoes, diamonds, bag and frock that their male
counterparts are not.

I agree. And I understand that these women are given the glamorous
gowns for free by designers in lieu of promotion on the red carpet,
but thanks to the rise of social media, surely designers and actresses
can plug their sartorial perks on Twitter and Instagram. Because I can
see that Angelina is wearing a black frock that I assume I cannot
afford but I don’t know what directors have inspired her. I can see
that Dame Helen Mirren is swathed in a silk shawl but I don’t know
what advice she would give to her 20-year-old self about the world of
acting. And I can see that Emma Stone is wearing earrings, but I would
much rather know what literary character would be her dream role.

And if Amal Clooney is there, rather than ask what she is wearing, ask
why on earth she would come back to this hysterical, surreal,
curiously hostile place.

Armenian artists stage duet in Tehran

Two Armenian musicians, Arpineh Israyelian and Astghik Vardanyan,
staged a duet featuring piano and violin at Roudaki Hall on February
19.

The performance received a very enthusiastic welcome from the Iranian
audience, ISNA reported.

The duet was performed during the closing ceremonies of the 30th Fajr
International Music Festival making the night memorable for the
audience.

In the first part of the performance, the two artists staged works
composed by two German musicians and composers, Johann Sebastian Bach
and Ludwig van Beethoven. In the second part Israyelian played a solo.

Their performance also featured pieces from French and Iranian
composers, Achille-Claude Debussy and Rafi Khachatourian, and Spanish
violinist Pablo de Sarasate.

Welcomed by standing ovation of the audience, the Armenian musicians
performed two other extra pieces.

Born in Yerevan in 1971, Israyelian grew up in a musician family. He
began learning the piano in Tchaikovsky music school in 1977 and
graduated from the school in 1989. He succeeded to pass the entrance
examination of the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory in the same year
and pursued his higher educations in the same field.

He received his M.A. in piano studies from the Conservatory.

Vardanyan was born in 1983 in Armenia. When she was only 13, she
staged her first performance as a member of the Armenian Philharmonic
Orchestra.

In 2005, she began teaching violin at London College of Music.

Shirinyan: Opposition political field in Armenia is paralyzed

Shirinyan: Opposition political field in Armenia is paralyzed

A compromise was reached between Armenia’s authorities and opposition,
but it is not clear how long internal political stability will last,
political scientist Levon Shirinyan told reporters today when speaking
about the relationship between Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) and
Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK).

“One can only say now that the sides reached a compromise and
regardless of what decision they took, it will be of importance to
further progress of Armenia,” Shirinyan said.

“Our public thinks that all problems can be solved in a day and during
a rally, but the reality is different,” the political scientist added.
In his words, HHK immediately launched a sharp attack and at first the
impression was that the ruling party decided to destroy businessmen
members of BHK, but HHK has currently retreated.

The opposition political field of Armenia is now paralyzed, but one
should not make hasty statements and analyses, Shirinyan said.

Armenians of Bulgaria welcomed the withdrawal of the Armenian Parlia

Armenians of Bulgaria welcomed the withdrawal of the Armenian
Parliament standardization protocols of Armenian-Turkish relations

February 20, 2015

football diplomacy is over

The Association of Armenians in Bulgaria, welcomes the decision of
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to remove from Parliament the issue
of protocols signed in Zurich in 2009 between Turkey and Armenia
allegedly aimed at normalizing bilateral relations. “The Turkish
authorities have once again demonstrated to the world that in refusing
the desire for peace of Armenia are the direct heirs of those who
committed the genocide of the Armenians. The gesture of the President
of Armenia is fair and justified because Turkey not only regret the
crimes of its past, but strengthens its anti-Armenian policy and its
denial of genocide “wrote in a statement the Association of Armenians
in Bulgaria. It also says that instead of respecting the memory of the
victims of the Armenian Genocide on April 24, Ankara moves cynically
that day celebrations of the victory of the Battle of Gallipoli.
“Almost every day, the Turkish officials use various opportunity to
distort history and deny the existence of the Armenian genocide and
denying any responsibility for these crimes,” the statement continues
by saying that Turkey supports the Azerbaijani government in the
conflict opposes in Karabakh “what is foolish in these circumstances

UC Berkeley Student Govt. Passes Resolution Calling For Divestment F

UC BERKELEY STUDENT GOVT. PASSES RESOLUTION CALLING FOR DIVESTMENT FROM TURKEY

[ Part 2.2: “Attached Text” ]

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

A scene from Wednesday’s meeting of UC Berkeley Student government

BERKELEY, Calif.- The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley)
undergraduate student body Senate unanimously voted on Wednesday night
to divest $72.6 million dollars worth of University of California
bonds and investments in the Republic of Turkey for their crimes in
and the continued denial of the Armenian Genocide.

The resolution titled “A Bill in Support of Divestment from
the Republic of Turkey” passed at 11:00 pm at Anna Head Alumnae
Hall at UC Berkeley.

The resolution is part of a larger initiative (#DivestTurkey)
spearheaded by the Armenian Youth Federation Western United States
(AYF), calling on institutions to divest from the Republic of Turkey,

“With the support of not only our Armenian community here at
Cal, but also with the Berkeley community at large, we are so proud
to have been a part of history tonight with the passing of this bill
at UC Berkeley” said Sareen Habeshian, a UC Berkeley student
and Armenian Student Association member.

Raffi Margossian, UC Berkeley sophomore and ASA executive member
stated, “I’m proud to see the ASUC take measures to hold
our Regents accountable. I think it’s outrageous that our
tuition money is invested without student input. This bill sends
a larger message that calls for the need for student voice in UC
investments”

The bill’s passage comes a few weeks after the UCLA student
body government unanimously passed a similar resolution, and just two
weeks after a University of California Student Association (UCSA)
bill that was passed in Los Angeles also demanding divestment from
the government of Turkey.

“I, like so many others, have grown up surrounded by
conversations about ‘Hye Tad’ but it was always so
abstract. What could someone like me do to raise the Armenian Cause,
to move it forward, to fight for it? I am 100 years removed from
the Genocide, I don’t live in the Homeland, I didn’t go
to an Armenian school growing up, yet there has always been a pull
towards something bigger than myself. We, as UC students, were given
the chance to finally raise the Armenian Cause and fight for what
is right and what is just. The Cause doesn’t belong in places
only filled with Armenians. It should permeate every aspect of our
life – our homes, our work place and especially our school – which
is exactly what we did tonight by calling for the divestment of our
tuition from the Republic of Turkey.” said Christina Mehranbod,
UC Berkeley senior and AYF member.

Russia Is Planning Safarov 2

RUSSIA IS PLANNING SAFAROV 2

Hakob Badalyan, Political Commentator
Comments – 20 February 2015, 15:09

Alexander Lukashevich, the official representative of the Russian
foreign minister, told the Azerbaijani AP News Agency that Russia
will discuss with its Armenian partners handing of the Azerbaijani
saboteur Dilham Askerov to Azerbaijan.

A few days ago the U.S. Assistant Secretary Victoria Nuland announced
first in Baku, then in Yerevan that if Yerevan makes a humanitarian
step and hand the saboteurs. Nuland noted that they committed a
horrible crime.

After Nuland’s statement a real official-expert campaign started in
Armenia and Artsakh that it is not the United States’ business and
the United States is promoting the interests of Azerbaijan and so on.

Interestingly, at the same time Azerbaijan was highly dissatisfied
with the U.S. policy in Artsakh. In other words, some officials and
experts in Armenia are equally dissatisfied with the U.S. policy.

Meanwhile, after Lavrov’s statement, which was a few months ago, nobody
in Azerbaijan and Armenia complained though it seemed that Armenia and
Artsakh should have treated Lavrov the way they later treated Nuland.

Moreover, there are stronger reasons to treat Lavrov more toughly.

Unlike the United States, Russia has signed a document on strategic
partnership with Armenia, has commitments to Armenia, namely prevention
of its citizens from sabotages against Armenia.

However, if Russia does not hesitate to take under its aegis Permyakov
who killed 7 people, Askerov’s crime should be just a misunderstanding
to them and, Moscow thinks, Armenia and Artsakh have absolutely no
reason to hold him.

So now the official representative of the MFA says that Lavrov’s
statement is valid, and the issue will be discussed with the Armenian
side. And there is no word from Armenia or Artsakh. Well, Lavrov
is neither from the United States, nor Europe. He is from Moscow so
no word.

Moreover, it is not ruled out that the Russians have even started
discussing the issue with the Armenian side and therefore there was an
attack on Nuland because the United States could actually hinder the
process of the Armenian-Russian negotiations on handing the saboteur.

And it is not ruled out that Nuland’s statements were made in Yerevan
and Baku to thwart these negotiations, to publicize the issue and
bring it to public focus, in order to prevent another Safarov case
when Russia, Azerbaijan and Hungary got through Safarov’s extradition
and glorification and only then did official Yerevan wake up and start
throwing eggs at some embassy in Yerevan than had some relationship to
Hungary, demonstrating to the society that they were given a surprise
and were angered but what else could they do aside from throwing eggs?

Now the United States is trying to wake up the society of Armenia and
Artsakh to make sure that the public does not wake up one beautiful
morning and watch how the Azerbaijani saboteur handed to Russia is
holding an interview with some Russian Life News.
