On

Assyrian Christians Claim ISIS Assaults Tantamount to Genocide of 1915,
Ask ‘Civilized World’ to React Swiftly, Decisively

By Isaiah Narciso

Relatives of Egyptian Coptic men killed in Libya mourn at their house
in al-Our village, in Minya governorate, south of Cairo February 16,
2015. Thousands of traumatized mourners gathered on Monday at the
Coptic church in al-Our village south of Cairo, struggling to come to
terms with the fate of compatriots who paid a gruesome price for
simply seeking work in Libya. Thirteen of 21 Egyptians beheaded by
Islamic State came from the impoverished dirt lanes of al-Our,
violence that prompted the Egyptian military to launch an air strike
on Islamic State militant targets in Libya. REUTERS/Asmaa Waguih

The Islamic terror group known as ISIS continued its march across Iraq
and Syria this week, tearing down artifacts and persecuting religious
minorities. However, they have directed much of their wrath against
Assyrian Christians and their ancient culture.

According to Peter BetBasoo of Assyrian International News Agency,
ISIS has carried out atrocities against Assyrian Christians in both
Syria and Iraq. These actions included murders, kidnappings of
hundreds of men, women, and children, and teardowns of cultural
resources, including burning down churches and priceless artifacts as
shown in a YouTube video.

Like Us on Facebook

“This is genocide — there is no other word for it,” BetBasso wrote.
“This is the erasure of a nation from the land which it has inhabited
for 6764 years.”

BetBasoo noted the irony surrounding the timing of the ISIS attacks,
noting that it is currently taking place on the 100th anniversary of
the Armenian Genocide.

“It is ironic that the ISIS attacks on Assyrians in Syria is occurring
in 2015, the centennial anniversary of the 1915 Turkish genocide of
Assyrians, Greeks and Armenians, in which 750,000 Assyrians were
killed (75 percent), 500,000 Pontic Greeks and 1.5 million Armenians,”
BetBasoo wrote.

BetBasoo contended that ISIS knew what it was doing when the terror
group carried out their attacks on important historical dates for
Assyrian Christians.

“ISIS is pretty savvy and is historically informed,” BetBasoo wrote.
“When ISIS pushed into the Nineveh Plain in Iraq last year, forcing
200,000 Assyrians to flee their homes, they began their invasion on
Aug. 7, which is the official Assyrian Martyrs Day, a day on which
each year Assyrians remember their fallen.”

BetBasoo argued that ISIS was sending a message through its
persecution of Assyrian Christians that it plans to destroy “the very
foundations of world civilization.”

“It is in Mesopotamia where civilization as we know it began,”
BetBasoo wrote. “Destroying Assyrian artifacts is ISIS’s message to
the world that it aims to eradicate the very basis of its civilization
because it is not Islamic.”

According to Sean Savage of JNS.org, ISIS has attacked 35 Assyrian
villages along the Khabur River in Hasaka, a city in northeastern
Syria. Jeff Gardner, a spokesman for Restore Nineveh Now Initiative,
spoke about ISIS actions against Assyrian Christians.

“We are absolutely appalled, but not surprised, by the actions of
[ISIS],” Gardner said. “They continue to do what they do – terrorize,
murder and pillage.”

Savage reported that local Arab tribal leaders in Syria have attempted
to act as intermediaries between ISIS and the Assyrian Christian
community. The leaders wanted both sides to do a prisoner swap and
urged ISIS to release civilian Assyrian Christians caught in the
crossfire.

“Immediately for Syria, we’re calling for much broader international
intervention,” Gardner said. “We are calling on the public to support
our relief efforts. Both governments and people need to respond to
this crisis.”

According to Savage, the video showed ISIS fighters supposedly
destroying priceless artifacts related to the Assyrian Empire and
other ancient civilizations inside the Mosul Museum in Iraq. ISIS
justified its destruction by claiming that they were forms of idolatry
under its radical interpretation of Islam.

“The Prophet Mohammed took down idols with his bare hands when he went
into Mecca,” an ISIS fighter said. “We were ordered by our prophet to
take down idols and destroy them, and the companions of the prophet
did this after this time, when they conquered countries.”

BetBasoo warned that the international community must react to ISIS
soon or there will be dire consequences for the entire world.

“The civilized world must find the courage to accept the force of its
moral superiority and act on it,” BetBasoo wrote. “If it does not, the
world will fall into shadow.”

Gardner told JNS.org that would take more than mere words and air
strikes from the international community to take out ISIS and protect
minority groups in the region.

“We need to move past just airstrikes and either mobilize
international forces or continue to train indigenous forces like the
Assyrians,” Gardner said.

Shake your sillies out with Raffi

He’s been called the most popular children’s singer in the
English-speaking world (theWashington Post), and deservedly so. He’s
also a songwriter, music producer, author, ecology advocate, lecturer,
and tireless advocate for children.

Named after the Armenian poet, Raffi has a string of gold and
platinum-selling recordings in North America including his classic
song, “Baby Beluga.” Other popular songs by Raffi are Shake My Sillies
Out, Brush Your Teeth, Bananaphone, Day-O and Down by the Bay.

Raffi believes that children should not be directly marketed to. He
has refused offers for commercial television shows and other
commercial endorsements. He also turned down a Hollywood offer to make
a film based on “Baby Beluga” since it would involve direct
advertising to children. His commitment to treating his young fans
with respect changed society’s outlook on music made for children.
He’s been referred to as “Canada’s all time children’s champion” and
is a recipient of the Order of Canada as well as the United Nations’
Earth Achievement Award. Raffifounded the Centre for Child Honouring
(childhonouring.org) which views early childhood as the gateway to
humane being.

Detroit Public TV To Present Two Armenian Documentaries On March 16

DETROIT PUBLIC TV TO PRESENT TWO ARMENIAN DOCUMENTARIES ON MARCH 16

18:07, 02 Mar 2015
Siranush Ghazanchyan

Detroit Public TV will present a special Armenian Heritage Night
on Monday, March 16, 2015, featuring the broadcast of two important
documentaries starting at 8:00 p.m. that will commemorate the Armenian
Genocide and celebrate the music legacy of its survivors.

LIVE Armenian music will be performed throughout the evening by Ara
Topouzian on kanun and Jerry Gerjekian on percussion.

Guardians of Music: A History of Armenian Music in Detroit

This one-hour film documentary, produced and narrated by Detroit
Armenian musician and 2012 Kresge Artist Fellow Ara Topouzian,
chronicles the history of generations of local Armenian music masters.

Traditional Armenian folk music ranges from ballads that describe
centuries of village life to upbeat dance songs performed at weddings,
community dances, and picnics. These traditions have been handed down
by generations of musicians, as well as survivors of the Armenian
Genocide of 1915. The film features visits to metro Detroit locations
where Armenian music was once prominent, as well as rare interviews
with musicians and nightclub patrons of that era.

The Armenian Genocide

The Armenian Genocide is the story of the more than one million
Armenians who died at the hands of the Ottoman Turks in World War I.

Produced by Emmy Award-winner Andrew Goldberg, the program is narrated
by Julianna Margulies, Ed Harris, Natalie Portman, Laura Linney,
Orlando Bloom and others. It includes interviews with Pulitzer
Prize-winning author (and current US Ambassador to the UN) Samantha
Power, as well as never-before-seen historical footage.

The Recognition And Condemnation Of The Genocide Is The Issue Of All

THE RECOGNITION AND CONDEMNATION OF THE GENOCIDE IS THE ISSUE OF ALL MANKIND

Friday, 27 February 2015 09:06

Prominent Jewish specialist on Genocide issues Yair Auron is in
Artsakh. After a meeting with President Bako Sahakian, he answered
the journalists’ questions.

On the eve of the centenary of the first Genocide in the 20th century,
the prominent specialist on Genocides noted with regret that the
100-year works were not enough for its recognition and condemnation.

The Jewish scientist believes that much is to be done here not only by
Armenians, but also by the international community. “I think that the
recognition of the Armenian Genocide isn’t the issue of Armenians. It
is the issue of all mankind. It is a global issue. It is the issue
of each of us – me, my friend, my relative, and all of us. And it is
shameful that only 23 states have recognized the Genocide. Yes, the
Parliaments of some states have also recognized it. But, state-level
recognition is needed. The Genocide denial paves the way for further
Genocides”, said the scientist. He considers the Holocaust a bright
example of this. The Jewish Genocide scientist recalled the well-known
phrase of Hilter before the Holocaust, “Who remembers the Armenian
Genocide now?” In spite of this, Israel has not only failed to
recognize the Armenian Genocide, but also supports those who deny it.

“Meanwhile, Israel should be the first in the list of countries,
which have recognized the Genocide”, said Mr. Auron. But, political
interests are prevailing today. But, with the adoption of the term
‘Genocide’ the levers of struggle against the crime haven’t increased.

Even the contrary.

An occasion for new debates is created, when thousands of people are
exterminated. And it isn’t in the historical past, but nowadays. Yair
Auron recalled the Rwandan Genocide, .

How real was the risk of Genocide for the Armenians of Artsakh? The
scientist assumed fairly that he didn’t research the issue and couldn’t
give any assessment. But, he highlighted that the Armenians of Artsakh
had started their struggle, and despite all the difficulties, they
had won it, thus removing all the threats. ,
said the scientist, making the parallels.

Recalling the lessons of the past and assessing the present
developments, the scientist is mostly concerned about the future
of Artsakh. He doesn’t hide that Israel’s stance isn’t pro-Armenian
either in the issue of the Armenian Genocide or in that of Artsakh.

Georgian Expert Offers To Involve Armenia In Regional Projects

GEORGIAN EXPERT OFFERS TO INVOLVE ARMENIA IN REGIONAL PROJECTS

March 2, 2015 15:06

Photo:

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Irakli Gogava, Georgian international relations
expert and former advisor to ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko,
stated that Armenia needs to be involved in regional projects.

Mediamax’s own correspondent reports that commenting on the possibility
of Georgian government’s selling of 25% of Georgian Railway shares,
Irakli Gogava said in his interview to “Kviris Palitra” newspaper:

“In the market economy, it doesn’t matter whether Russia or Swaziland
will buy the 25%. What is most important is that the government will
retain the control over the railway or at least over 51% shares. I’m
welcoming it if it’s linked to the resumption of the Abkhazian sector.

It’s time for the Georgian politicians to grab calculators and make
all the decision taking into account economic benefits”.

“The opening of railway through Abkhazia will bring at least USD300mln
annual revenue to Georgia”, stated Irakly Gogava.

“Of course, Russia-Armenia link through the railway won’t be received
by Azerbaijan with great ovations, which is why Georgia shouldn’t
let transportation of Russian military cargoes through this road”,
he added.

The expert thinks that besides the Abkhazian sector,
“Iran-Armenia-Georgia-Russia and Adler-Tbilisi-Yerevan-Tabriz railway
axis were also interesting projects”.

“If rationally tackled, it will attract Turkmenistan, Pakistan, India
and Iraq to transport cargoes to Europe and backwards and will also
enhance Russia’s interest in stability in the region”, said Gogava.

Jostle Ahead Of PAP’s Return

JOSTLE AHEAD OF PAP’S RETURN

Haikazn Ghahriyan, Editor-in-Chief
Comments – 02 March 2015, 13:26

As expected, after the developments relating to the PAP, the problem
of the opposition is spotlighted. The PAP looks like a giant barrier.

Yesterday the Armenian National Congress called a rally to announce
that they are the only opposition. In his speech Levon Ter-Petrosyan
even teased the others: the Founding Parliament, Nikol Pashinyan,
attempts to form a “united opposition”. He said the ANC will not
call rallies by April 24 and will “give” this time to the others to
observe how they succeed with change of government.

One of Nikol Pashinyan’s brothers-in-arms had announced prior to
the rally that the Civil Agreement and Nikol Pashinyan are the only
opposition.

The Founding Parliament noted for its part that they are the only
opposition, and the others are rotating around the government. Many
other forces contending for opposition think so.

The government announces that they will try to form a constructive,
serious opposition. PAP will most probable returned to the opposition
after formatting.

In fact, a serious jostle is taking place in the empty field of the
opposition, in which everyone is participating. There is no doubt that
it will become stronger on the eve of formation of government. And
the problem is not the ideological and political disagreement but the
vicious practice established within two decades which has established
in the Armenian politics the phenomenon of “usurpation” and ignoring
of constitutional mechanisms.

The Armenian opposition has not been able to step outside of this
phenomenon, which indicates dependence on the economic and political
system and a primitive methodology of the “political race”.

The Armenian National Congress is a vivid example. After the
developments of 2008 this party entered into deals with different
segments of the system, ensuring a presence in the National Assembly.

Now the behavior of the ANC prompts that in the new situation it is
trying to enter into new deals with the system, offering in return for
this the status of “the only opposition” and the role that emanates
from this status.

This explains Ter-Petrosyan’s sarcastic speech on the other forces.

Perhaps it is impossible to imagine a force that is in a more
ridiculous situation than the ANC. However, it is possible that the
other forces which proclaim themselves “the only real opposition”
have such motivation.

So far there is no opposition in Armenia as long as the political
forces are within the frames of the “usurpation scheme”. The purpose
of this scheme is to establish one’s irreplaceable role in the
field, entering into a deal with the system and reserving presence
in the government bodies. Since the constitutional norms on forming
government are not exercised, the only opportunity is the deal (the
other opportunity is the coup).

It seems clear that one has to work towards establishing constitutional
order to change the situation. This is a complicated thing,
considering the objective and subjective aspects of the current
Armenian reality. On the other hand, as long as the Constitution is
not exercised, the alternative is deals or attempts at a coup. Here
is a vicious circle and, on the other hand, an endless field for
activities. The problem of the Armenian opposition is in this field.

But who would go there?

For the time being, the jostle will continue and grow tougher,
especially that PAP may be returned to the “opposition field” with
new quotas.

Property Deprivation Reason For Genocide

PROPERTY DEPRIVATION REASON FOR GENOCIDE

Anahit Astoyan, “Hayern Aysor”, 6 February 2015

“Õ~HO~BÕ¶Õ¥Õ¦O~@Õ¯Õ¸O~BÕ´…” Õ°Õ¡ÕµÕ¥O~@Õ§Õ¶ Õ¿Õ¡O~@Õ¢Õ¥O~@Õ¡Õ¯Õ¨ Õ¨Õ¶Õ©Õ¥O~@O~AÕ¥Õ¬ Õ¡ÕµÕ½Õ¿Õ¥Õ²

In 2013, senior scientific worker of the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of
Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran) Anahit Astoyan released her book
“Robbery of the Century: Deprivation of Properties of Armenians in
the Ottoman Empire in 1914-19”.

According to the author, the fact that the government planned the
appropriation of Armenians’ individual and collective properties is
stated in the reports of survivors and foreign diplomats having served
in the Ottoman Empire, as well as in the Turkish archives in which
it is confirmed that the deprivation of the properties of Armenians
was a major factor in the plan for annihilation of the Armenian nation.

For that purpose, on June 1, 1915, the Young Turks promulgated the
Law on Deportations by which 1.5 million Armenians were forcefully
deported and annihilated.

Later, the overt robbery and appropriation of all mobile and real
estate properties and all the wealth of Armenians were legitimized,
and this is what Anahit Astoyan has touched upon in her book.

“Hayern Aysor”: What made you publish this book?

Anahit Astoyan: Scholar Levon Vardan, author of the book “1915 and
the Derelict Properties of the Armenians”, was the first to conduct
research on this topic. The scholar also urged to continue research.

No matter how strange it may sound, over the past years, Turkish
historians have especially started touching upon this topic. Over
the past five to six years, Taner Akcam, Ungur Umit, Sait Cetioglu,
Nevzat Onara and Ayshe Hyuri have published books devoted to the topic.

The Turkish authors find that the issue of the return of Armenians’
properties lies at the core of Turkey’s denial. If the Turks recognize
the Armenian Genocide, they will be forced to come to grips with
the reality that they are obliged to repair the material losses that
the Armenians suffered. That’s why they prefer to deny the Armenian
Genocide.

I have conducted studies on the economic activity of Armenians in
the Ottoman Empire and have revealed many interesting facts.

Armenians were the “owners” of Turkey’s economy. This was a matter
of great concern for the Turks, especially the Young Turks who were
worried that the Armenians would soon take over the empire as well.

Armenians were the leaders in music, architecture and other spheres
across the Ottoman Empire, and 80 percent of schools in the Ottoman
Empire were Armenian schools.

Many historians, political scientists and foreign diplomats say
deprivation of the Armenians’ properties was one of the motives behind
the Armenian Genocide. U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Henry Morgenthau
clearly states that the main purpose of the deportations was robbery.

Turkish historians say the same.

Deprivation of properties was truly one of the major goals because the
government already had a lot of debts. Besides, the Young Turks had a
plan to Turkify the country, and they implemented their economic policy
by Turkifying the properties belonging to the Armenians and the Greeks.

“Hayern Aysor”: What research have you done to write this book?

A. A.: The orders of the Ministry of Interior Affairs of the
Ottoman government on seizing Armenians’ properties and related to
the committees on derelict properties of Kesaria are kept at the
Matenadaran.

After the deportations of the Armenians, the process of depriving
Armenians of their properties was legitimized. The orders on managing
the Armenians’ derelict properties, comprised of 34 articles, were
promulgated on June 10, 1915, and the Law on Derelict Properties was
promulgated in September 1915. The Ottoman Parliament legitimized
the appropriation and confiscation of Armenians’ properties, which
were already being appropriated and seized across the country.

Later, a statue was drawn up for enforcement of this law. Committees
were set up for the derelict properties on the basis of legal acts,
and those committees organized the confiscation of Armenians’
properties. These documents are kept at the Matenadaran.

The records of the committees on derelict properties are very important
documents and can give one the real picture of what Armenians lost.

There are many sources in the book.

After the ceasefire declared in Mudrus on October 30, 1918, the
newspapers of Constantinople were full of articles that were mainly
reprints from Turkish newspapers. The defeated Turks were starting
to confess.

During my interviews, I always say that just the newspapers of
Constantinople were enough to write a book.

The foreign diplomatic documents and the opinions of foreign
diplomats also serve as sources. Materials related to the deprivation
of Armenians’ properties can be found in any book devoted to the
Armenian Genocide.

The recent works by Turkish historians also helped me a lot.

“Hayern Aysor”: If the deprivation of the Armenians’ properties was
legitimate, does this mean that we can’t demand the return of those
properties?

A. A.: The laws on derelict properties, which were annulled under
pressure from countries of the Entente in 1920, were restored by the
Kemals and were in effect until 1988.

The points in the Lausanne Covenant concerning Armenians properties
can serve as a legal document for us. Republican Turkey expressed
commitment to return the Armenians’ properties, but in September 1923,
Kemal Turkey passed laws with the purpose of ruling out the application
of the Articles in the Lausanne Covenant and the intervention of the
League of Nations on the basis of those Articles in 1923 and 1927. With
those laws, the Turks deprived the Armenians of their right to return
to the homeland. A seal prohibiting return to Turkey was placed in the
passports of the deportees or those who had voluntarily migrated. Thus,
Turkey claimed the properties that the Armenians had left behind.

The massacres and the confiscation of Armenians’ properties continued
more brutally during the years of the Kemal movement. The driving
force for the Kemal movement was the Armenians’ properties. Kemal would
tell everyone that people had to help him, adding that If they didn’t,
then the Armenians would return and stand up for their properties.

Notable Muslim Turks and Kurds would provide funding for the Kemal
movement, the victory of which led to the establishment of the Republic
of Turkey in 1923.

“Hayern Aysor”: Can we estimate our material losses?

A. A.: The human brain is incapable of that. In one of the chapters
of my book, I have noted an approximate estimate with facts converted
into figures.

There are also different committees that have done calculations.

Besides the demands that the Unified National Delegation presented to
the Paris Conference in 1919, which were drawn up by foreign experts,
it is impossible to make correct calculations.

Let me bring up an example. After this book was published, a woman
came to the Matenadaran. Her grandfather was from Van. She had brought
the booklet from the branch of the Ottoman Bank in Van for which she
had deposited 7,000 pieces of molten gold. If an average person could
deposit that much gold in the bank, what about the others? How much
money could rich and famous people have in banks?

There is a tremendous amount of material losses that are the wealth
that was accumulated through centuries and millennia of hard work.

In the orders on derelict properties there was a specific point that
concerned the theft of Armenian Church properties and cultural assets,
which is immeasurable.

Based on Turkey’s data, prior to 1914, the Armenians in Turkey had
2,538 churches, 451 monasteries and 2,000 schools. The wealth kept in
these institutions was also appropriated, robbed and destroyed. This
is a severe loss not only for Armenian culture, but world culture
as well. I have estimated the losses. Based on the data, there were
30,000 pix and 600,000 objects for rituals.

The Turks are getting rich off us to this day. The majority of
Armenians were certain that the displacement was temporary. They all
kept their riches somewhere “safe”. For 100 years, the Turks have had a
“gold fever” as they destroy even the foundations of Armenian churches,
homes and cemeteries. They have been conducting searches with special
devices to this day.

The Turks didn’t just Turkify the economy at the expense of Armenians’
properties. Armenian properties make up 32-35% of Turkey’s national
capital, according to Turkish historians. The Turks paid a large
portion of foreign debts and filled the government’s empty treasury.

There are facts stating how the government’s budget was increasing
during the years of war when it should have been the opposite.

They organized the Kemal movement, the victory of which led to
the establishment of modern-day Turkey. The Republic of Turkey was
established on the basis of the Armenian Genocide, as well as material,
military and political gains.

The Armenians have mourned so much for the loss of fellow Armenians
that they haven’t attached importance to material losses, which goes
to show once again the morality of the Armenian nation.

“Hayern Aysor”: Did other countries help deprive the Armenians of
their properties?

A. A.: It’s very strange. Before 1914, the newspapers of Constantinople
and Zmurnia were filled with advertisements of foreign insurance
companies. Starting from the mid-19th century, the country saw
an increase in the number of foreign insurance companies that had
Armenian customers. The 63 foreign insurance companies based in Turkey
had Armenian customers, and they received the sums for insurance in
gold. The insurance companies had branches in all major cities. They
also appropriated our properties. New York Life Insurance was the
only company that returned small amounts of money.

There were also banks in Turkey. As I mentioned, the major part
of Turkey’s economy was in the hands of Armenians, and Armenian
merchants and manufacturers were working with banks. The banks also
appropriated the Armenians’ sums. There are facts stating how German
banks appropriated the derelict properties of Armenians as well.

“Hayern Aysor”: Which facts had a greater impact on you while you
were writing the book?

A. A.: I have come across very hard facts, and it’s always hard for
me to remember them. It’s the most horrible ransom. Those riding the
caravans of Armenians would pay a ransom to cross a street, bridge or
travel from one village to the next and would constantly distribute
gold. A gendarmerie commander once confessed that he had received 40
boxes (containing 20 liters) of gold from an Armenian caravan.

People would give ransoms to become Islamized. Famous wealthy
Ibranosyan gave a building equivalent to 15,000 Turkish lira to
convert to Islam, and we still have to find out how many Islamized
Armenians there are.

It is known that 63,000 children, 250,000 Armenian women and ladies
remained in Turkey and, according to Morgenthau, most of them were
in the harems. Only 10,000 of them could be brought back through the
efforts of employees of the American Relief.

People were spending huge amounts of money to be executed, just for
that one bullet.

You are aware that there was a special organization for criminals
during the Armenian Genocide. The Young Turks would collaborate with
special organizations of criminals from prisons under the condition
that the Young Turks would be relieved of criminal persecution,
if they shared the loot of the Armenians.

Based on data from the U.S., there were 300,000 and I have estimated
that each of them received 15,000 pieces of gold. If we multiply
that number, then just the special organization received 70 billion
Turkish gold…

The facts say it all. The only thing left for me to do is to hope
many will touch upon this topic. Although I have tried to give the
whole picture of the deprivation of the Armenians’ properties, but
this is just a small part.

The English version of the book will soon be released at the initiative
of the Matenadaran and by state order.

the Armenian Cause….
