Armenian Ambassador to Italy Ruben Karapatyan visited the country’s
most important sea port – the western town of Civitavecchia (Lazio
region) – on Wednesday.

According to a press release by the Foreign Ministry, the diplomat
met with the students of Antonio De Curtis school, which is the only
school in the region declared as a UNESCO world heritage site. Earlier
this year, it was also declared a sister school with Yerevan’s Marie
Izmiryan Orphanage.

The students had prepared a special musical program for the
ambassador. A former member of the European Parliament, Alessandro
Battilocchio, presented a film about their visit to Yerevan this
summer.

Karapetyan conveyed to the students the greetings of their friends in
Yerevan and promised to organize mutual visits in future to establish
a closer friendship between them. He further informed them about the
Armenian Government’s recent move to make chess studies a mandatory
subject in secondary schools. The ambassador also donated to the
school a chess set with figures made of Armenian stones.

He later met with the governor of Lazio region, Luigi Landi to discuss
possibilities of developing decentralized collaboration. Both parties
stressed the importance of such format of partnership, considering
it a groundwork for the development and deepening of bilateral ties.

NKR OFFICIAL LABELS AZERBAIJAN’S ‘PROTECTIVE WALL’ AS ‘GREAT WALL OF ILHAM’

PanARMENIAN.Net – Chairman of the Nagorno Karabakh standing
parliamentary committee on external relations has labeled the
‘protective wall’ Azerbaijan is building at the Karabakh border as
‘Great Wall of Ilham’.

“This construction is another propaganda move by Baku and should not
be taken seriously,” Vahram Atanesyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

“What is the meaning of this wall? Let’s have a real look. If we
wanted we could easily hamper the construction of the wall allegedly
meant to protect civilians. If Armenians wanted to kill civilians
they would have shot dead the builders,” Atanesyan said.

Asked whether the wall can change the balance of forces at the
contact line, he said: “This wall will not safeguard Azerbaijanis from
retaliatory measures we will take in case of ceasefire violations. The
NKR army possesses equipment capable to destroy any construction.”

Azerbaijan is constructing a ‘protective wall’ at the line of
contact with NKR. According to Azeri media, a wall, 700 meters long
and 3 meters tall, was already built near the village of Chyragly,
bordering with Martakert province.

Azerbaijan has been considering construction of a wall “to protect
itself from Armenian snipers” since 2006

French PM: Europe Moving Towards Eurozone Economic Government

FRENCH PM: EUROPE MOVING TOWARDS EUROZONE ECONOMIC GOVERNMENT

PanARMENIAN.Net
October 21, 2011 – 13:23 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Europe is moving towards an economic government for
the 17-nation eurozone, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said
Friday, October 21, ahead of what he called a “decisive” summit on
the bloc’s debt crisis.

“Europe is moving resolutely towards an economic government of the
eurozone,” he told South Korean business chiefs at a seminar in Seoul.

Sunday’s European Union summit would be a “decisive meeting”, he
said, although another summit is already planned for Wednesday as
the eurozone battles to prevent Greece’s problems from spilling over
more widely.

Fillon said the crisis had exposed the “oversights” in the continent’s
monetary union, and that the world economy and governance was
approaching a “moment of truth”.

But he stressed: “Today Europe is faced with a new challenge. As she
has always done in the past, she will overcome the tests and emerge
strengthened.

“I encourage you to have confidence in Europe,” Fillon told members
of the French-Korean chamber of commerce and other Korean business
leaders, ahead of a weekend visit to Japan.

EU ministers were to begin pre-summit talks Friday, amid hopes the
leaders will agree to strengthen Europe’s financial rescue facility
and to recapitalize banks.

But rifts over how to solve the eurozone debt crisis which threatens
the world economy have forced the 17-nation zone to call a fresh
summit next Wednesday, AFP reported.

The historical Armenian Surp Giragos Church in the southeastern
province of Diyarbakır will open its doors for a Divine Liturgy on
Sunday Oct. 23 for the first time in decades following the completion
of two years of restorations.

The church will be blessed toward evening on Oct. 22 in accordance
with the traditions of the Apostolic Armenian Church; the Divine
Liturgy is set to take place the day after.

The restoration of the church was funded by donations from Armenians
in Istanbul and abroad through an initiative spearheaded by Vartkes
Ergun Ayık, a businessman of Armenian origin whose roots lie in
Diyarbakır, and Raffi Bedrosyan, an ex-resident of Istanbul who now
lives in Canada.

The Sur District Governor’s Office in Diyarbakır lent its support to
the project as well, while the Bakırköy District Governor’s Office
in Istanbul allocated two buses free of charge for Bakırköy residents
who would like to attend the event, as it did during the opening of the
Surp Krikor Lusavorich Church (Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator)
in the Central Anatolian province of Kayseri a few years ago.

Some 1,500 people from Istanbul, Armenia and the United States,
as well as from countries across Europe and the Middle East, are
expected to attend the historic mass.

No vacancies are reported to be left in hotels across Diyarbakır,
as rooms were reserved months in advance. The people of Diyarbakır
are therefore readying to host visitors in their own homes, as they
did two years ago when the historical Surp Hac Church (Church of
the Holy Cross) on Akdamar Island in the eastern province of Van was
opened for mass.

Regarded by art historians as the biggest church in the Middle
East, the Surp Giragos Church covers 3,200 square meters and has a
capacity of 3,000 people. Used as a command center for German officers
during World War I, the church was then used as an apparel depot by
state-owned Sumerbank until 1950.

AZERBAIJANI ENVOY PRAISES RUSSIA’S ROLE ON KARABAKH

Baku’s envoy in Moscow has welcomed the role of Russia as a Karabakh
mediator at an event to mark the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s
independence.

The event, held at the Azerbaijani embassy in Russia, was attended
by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigoriy Karasin, ambassadors, the
Moscow representative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, representatives
of the All-Russian Congress of Azerbaijanis and public figures.

Addressing the event, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Russia, Polad
Bulbuloglu, said that the country had developed rapidly during the
20 years of independence. He stressed that the main problem facing
the country was the liberation of Azerbaijani territories occupied
by Armenia.

The ambassador said that the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan
and Russia had become a guarantor of stability in the region. He
praised the efforts of Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev to settle
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict:

“We do not lose hope for a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh
problem, and we can see Russia’s active work in tackling the problem
within the framework of international law. We believe that the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be solved with the help of Russia.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigoriy Karasin told the event that
cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia was rapidly developing in
a number of fields.

According to Karasin, Russia sees Azerbaijan as a reliable partner,
able to conduct a broad constructive dialogue:

“The mutual trust and respect existing between Presidents Ilham Aliyev
and Dmitriy Medvedev stands at the basis of the cooperation between our
countries. Our links provide a basis for strengthening the strategic
partnership of neighbourliness and cooperation, and act as a factor
of stability and security in the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea.

And this meets the interests of our states and the desire of both
peoples.”

All Eyes On Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian At Markham Show

ALL EYES ON SOPRANO AT MARKHAM SHOW

If you are lucky enough to hear Isabel Bayrakdarian at Markham Theatre
Friday night, better rest up before you arrive.

The famed Canadian-Armenian soprano may just be watching and making
eye-contact with you.

“I’m communicating with the audience, so obviously I’m not going to
be making eye-contact with the wall,” Ms Bayrakdarian said.

But the downside of looking at her audience in an intimate venue like
the Markham Theatre is she might catch someone dozing off while she
sings, the Juno-winning singer admitted.

“I take that as a personal insult,” Ms Bayrakdarian said, laughing.

“I’m thinking, ‘Am I not….'”

In a much-anticipated exclusive GTA solo recital with husband, pianist
Serouj Kradjian, Ms Bayrakdarian has planned a special program with
“spice and variety”.

>>From rarely heard repertoires to more well-known songs, Ms
Bayrakdarian will take the audience through a journey that includes
Hungarian, French, Italian, Armenian and Spanish music and folk songs.

“It’s like strolling through a park you’ve never been,” she said.

“It’s an exploratory experience for them.”

Ms Bayrakdarian – the voice behind the Grammy-winning soundtrack of
The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers – burst onto the international
opera scene after winning first prize in the 2000 Operalia competition,
founded by Placido Domingo.

She has always sung in churches, but music was no more than a hobby
for the longest time.

Ms Bayrakdarian was studying medical engineering at the University
of Toronto when she won the competition in 2000.

She was also taking music lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music
at the time.

“When I started winning competitions, I had to make a difficult
decision,” she said, adding she won the competition because she had
the right attitude and desire to show her best without comparing
herself to others.

“It was a gradual thing, but when it comes to passion for music, a
lot of us have hobbies,” she said. “In singing, the more you practise,
the better you sound. Then you are bitten by the bug. It’s this poison
of love for music you get obsessed with.”

Having sung professionally for about 15 years and performed in the
world’s major opera halls, Ms Bayrakdarian said singing still never
feels like work to her.

“If you love something, you should run with it,” she said. “Getting a
paycheque after a performance is a shock. We are not on salaries, so
you have to be very comfortable that you are a contractor in a sense.”

Asked what it’s like working with her husband, Ms Bayrakdarian said
because both of them are soloists and have very specific and individual
ideas about the music, “The process of putting it all together between
two stubborn Tauruses – you can let your imagination run on how the
discussions run”, she said.

However, “Because he’s my husband, during the performance, blindly,
I know he’ll be there for me.”

Ms Bayrakdarian’s recital opens Markham Theatre’s classical music
series.
