LOS ANGELES-For the first time in its history, the Armenian Bone
Marrow Donor Registry held a Walk of Life event in Fresno, California,
in addition to its annual walkathon in Los Angeles.

Walk of Life 2011, which took place on October 15 and 22 in Fresno and
Glendale, California, respectively, was attended by large numbers of
supporters from throughout the Armenian community as well as several
elected officials. Both events received extensive media coverage.

In an interview with We Are Fresno co-host Stephanie Booroojian (seen
on NBC Fresno affiliate KSEE 24), ABMDR president Dr. Frieda Jordan
commented on the significance of the registry’s first-ever Fresno
walkathon. “I think it’s extremely important for Fresno’s community
at large to be aware of the registry’s work,” she said.

“Fresno is among areas in California which may face higher-than-normal
health risks due to industrial pollution, particularly in terms of
the use of pesticides,” Dr. Jordan continued. “These risk factors can
be responsible for a prevalence of life-threatening diseases such as
leukemia, which has already claimed the lives of many Armenians in
Fresno. By registering as potential bone marrow stem cell donors,
our supporters can actually save the life of a fellow Armenian who
might need a bone marrow transplant.”

A first for Fresno Walk of Life 2011 kicked off on the morning
of October 15 at Fresno’s Eaton Plaza Amphitheater, as teams of
supporters from various local organizations gathered to take part
in the event. The teams represented the AGBU Fresno Chapter (led
by chairperson Zaroohi Der Mugrdechian), the ANC of Fresno (led by
chairperson Hygo Ohanessian), the ARS Fresno Mayr Chapter (led by
chairperson Angele Ohanessian), the AYF Fresno Kevork Chavoush Chapter
(led by chairperson Rita Costanian), and the Fresno State Armenian
Students Association (led by Vartush Mesropyan).

Following Dr. Jordan’s welcome remarks and the invocation by Fr. Vahan
Gosdanian of the Western Prelacy, the participants walked to the
historic Statue of David of Sassoon at the Courthouse Park and on
to the landmark Saroyan Theater. Subsequently they returned to the
Eaton Plaza Amphitheater to enjoy a day-long celebration featuring
music and food. Participants also had the opportunity to join the
ranks of ABMDR by inquiring at information and recruitment booths
set up throughout the venue.

“What a profoundly rewarding experience this has been!” said Dr.
Karoline Rostamiani of the ABMDR Board of Advisors, who co-chaired
the Fresno and Los Angeles Walk of Life 2011 events with fellow
Board member Dr. Stella Baghdasarian. “We applaud the Fresno Armenian
community, and especially the wonderful young generation, for taking
part in the maiden ABMDR walkathon of their city, for organizing
at the grass roots and spreading the word, and for making generous
donations,” Dr. Rostamiani stated. “Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone
who got involved.”

On her part, Dr. Stella Baghdasarian, who had an instrumental role
in organizing volunteers and overseeing the logistics of Walk of Life
2011, expressed her “profound admiration for all those who participated
in the walkathon, particularly youth groups.”

In Los Angeles: a powerful expression of solidarity A week later,
on the morning of October 22, the Armenian community of Los Angeles
in turn rallied in support of Walk of Life 2011. Hundreds gathered
outside Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, where the
event’s opening ceremony was held.

In her remarks, Dr. Jordan said, “Our sixth annual walkathon is
dedicated especially to our patients. This is a walk of solidarity
with them, and an ongoing, impassioned effort to help give them the
gift of life.”

Dignitaries whose presence Dr. Jordan acknowledged included US
congressman and longtime ABMDR supporter Adam Schiff, California
State senator Carol Liu, Glendale mayor Laura Friedman, Burbank mayor
Jess Talamantes, Glendale Unified School District Board of Education
president Greg Krikorian, and Glendale Community Development Department
director Hassan Haghani.

After she thanked the walkathon’s two main corporate sponsors,
Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center (an ABMDR Partner for
Life) and Karoun Dairies, Inc., Dr. Jordan also acknowledged the many
teams participating in the event, particularly youth teams from area
universities, Armenian schools, Glendale Unified District schools,
and various community organizations.

Next to take the podium was Congressman Adam Schiff, who stated,
“You can imagine the trauma of a family whose child’s life depends
on a bone marrow transplant. The Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry
brings hope to such families, by matching potential stem cell donors
to patients suffering from life-threatening diseases.”

On her part, Mayor Laura Friedman, a cancer survivor, praised the work
of the registry and thanked all participants for their unflinching
support of its mission.

The walk started following the invocation, which was delivered jointly
by Fr. Vazken Atmajian of the Western Prelacy, Archpriest Fr.

Hovhannes Maroukian of the Western Diocese, and Rev. Joseph Matossian
of the Armenian Evangelical Union of North America.

Passing through central Glendale, the almost four-mile walkathon
concluded in Verdugo Park, where the success of the event was
celebrated well into the afternoon, in a festive community atmosphere
featuring food, live music as well as several donor-recruitment and
health-information booths.

Following congratulatory remarks delivered by Senator Carol Liu,
who is a longtime advocate of breast-cancer awareness, Dr. Karoline
Rostamiani thanked all participating schools and Armenian Student
Associations for their enthusiastic involvement. She also conveyed
special gratitude to the US Army Armenian Veterans for taking part
in the walkathon.

In addition to Senator Liu, dignitaries attending the festivities
included Grigor Hovhannisyan, consul general of Armenia in Los Angeles.

With each passing year, the number of elected officials who recognize
ABMDR and lend it their moral support continues to grow. As it was
announced during the festivities at Verdugo Park, the registry received
a Certificate of Achievement from the office of Mike Gatto, a member
of the California State Assembly who represents the 43rd District.

Commenting on the growing Armenian-youth presence within the ranks of
ABMDR, Dr. Vergine Madelian, the registry’s outreach officer, stated,
“Over two-thirds of our donors are below 35 years old and 27 percent
are under 25. The younger the donors, the longer they stay active
in the registry, and the higher their chances of matching a patient
somewhere down the line. This is youth power in the best possible
sense.”

The festivities at Verdugo Park were made all the more thrilling thanks
to musical performances by a number of volunteer artists. They included
Nersig Ispiryan, Joseph Krikorian, Karen Boksian, Hratch Bogharian,
Ara Shahbazian, and Vatche Demirjian.

Toward the end of the celebration, raffle drawings were held and
trophies were bestowed on the most active walkathon teams and
individual volunteers. The Boston Team, headed by ABMDR Board of
Directors members Dr. Evelyn Baghdasraian and Alvart Badalian, was
awarded for having raised the most funds; the Chamlian School Team
was awarded for having the highest number of participants; and Amy
Boyadjian received a trophy for having raised the most funds as an
individual volunteer.

About the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry: Established in 1999,
ABMDR, a nonprofit organization, helps Armenians worldwide survive
life-threatening blood-related illnesses by recruiting and matching
donors to those requiring bone marrow stem cell transplants. To date,
the registry has recruited over 21,554 donors in 13 countries across
three continents, identified 2,135 patients, found 1,753 potential
matches, and facilitated 13 bone marrow transplants.

His resignation was “confidential” until the moment when his name
on the official site of the National Assembly appeared among former
members of parliament.

Member of Parliament Naira Zohrabyan confirmed this information. “As
far as I know, he is going to take on another job. I think Mr.

Melikyan will inform later about his new job,” he said.

We have learned that Academician Armen Melikyan, surgeon, has received
an offer from a foreign clinic. However, it is notable that last
week Armen Melikyan attended the meeting of parliament and wanted
to meet with some members of parliament to discuss some legislative
initiatives. And he handed in his resignation only yesterday.

Moscow Warns Of Retaliatory Measures On NATO Missile Defence

MOSCOW WARNS OF RETALIATORY MEASURES ON NATO MISSILE DEFENCE

PanARMENIAN.Net
November 1, 2011 – 19:36 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Moscow reiterated its warning on Tuesday, Nov
1 that it would have to take “retaliatory measures” if the United
States and NATO continue to ignore its position on a missile defense
system in Europe.

“We are ready to continue the missile defense dialogue with the United
States and NATO,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an
interview with Serbian newspaper Vecernje Novosti.

“However, if our partners continue to ignore our position, we will
have to ensure our own security interests using other methods.”

“Forced retaliatory military-technical measures may be needed,”
Lavrov said.

Moscow has been irked by U.S. plans to deploy missile defense elements
in Europe.

Russia proposed a joint missile defense system, an idea that many
experts both at home and abroad dismiss as unviable and unrealistic.

Then it demanded “legally binding guarantees” that U.S./NATO missiles
would not be targeted at Russia.

Since Moscow’s proposal received a lukewarm response in the West,
it has been warning of unspecified low-cost “asymmetric measures”
to counter the future Western missile defense system, RIA Novosti
reported.

LAWMAKER: ARMENIAN AUTHORITIES’ ECONOMIC ACTIVITY AND PROGRAMS DESTRUCTIVE

/ARKA/
October 31, 2011
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, October 31. /ARKA/. Armenian authorities’ economic activity
and programs are destructive, Vahan Hovhanisyan, head of Armenian
Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutiun’s faction in the National
Assembly, said at a news conference on Monday.

“A new tax package has been presented,” he said. “We didn’t look
through it completely, but know that quite positive provisions will be
included in it. However, we ask why our government obliges the State
Revenue Committee to put so heavy pressure on small and mid-scale
businesses.”

On September 29, Armenian government approved the 2012 draft budget.

The budget revenue is projected at AMD 910 billion, spending AMD
1042.5 billion and deficit 132.5 billion here.

In this draft budget, tax revenue is planned to be enlarged by AMD
101 billion.

Hovhanisyan said that the authorities, understanding very well that
they are unable to put heavier tax burden on large economic entities,
decided to suck small and mid-scale businesses dry.

“The whole weight of the tax burden will be borne by those who are
in need of support to breathe, develop their businesses and get rich
to send more money to the budget,” he said.

The lawmaker is convinced that GDP growth, new jobs and development
of businesses, not administrative levers, can intensify tax flows
into the government budget.

He said that some provisions based on his party’s proposals would be
included in the package as well.

“However, it is not clear yet what components will enlarge the budget
and which sectors will show obvious growth,” he said.

Hovhannisyan said that his remarks were preliminary, not final.

Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said that the
government had come up with legislative initiatives to ease small
and medium entrepreneurs’ tax burden and tighten grip on large-income
businesses. ($1 = AMD 378.58).

NKR Official Advises To Prepare For Slowdown In Karabakh Settlement

NKR OFFICIAL ADVISES TO PREPARE FOR SLOWDOWN IN KARABAKH SETTLEMENT

PanARMENIAN.Net
November 1, 2011 – 09:12 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Azerbaijan will take every effort to transfer talks
on Nagorno Karabakh conflict to the UN floor, head of the central
information department at the office of Artsakh President said.

“However, such attempts are doomed to fail. Baku’s main goal in the UN
Security Council will be creation of a new direction in Karabakh talks
with involvement of Turkey and other Muslim states in it. And I do
not think the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs will favor this undertaking,”
David Babayan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

He noted that more slowdown of the Karabakh process is expected.

On October 24 Azerbaijan secured a seat on the UN Security Council
in 2012-2013 after Slovenia withdrew from the race following 16
inconclusive rounds of voting.

Azerbaijan’s victory was confirmed when it received 155 votes in the
193-nation UN General Assembly, ensuring that it joins Pakistan,
Morocco, Guatemala and Togo as temporary members of the 15-nation
council in January.

In a race for the fifth Security Council seat, Azerbaijan and Slovenia
went 10 rounds of voting with no decision. Azerbaijan built some
momentum but was 14 votes short of qualifying for the seat.

Countries are voted onto the Security Council by all 193 UN member
nations. Leaving the council are Brazil, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria.

Tsarukian Still Vague On Armenian Presidential Election

TSARUKIAN STILL VAGUE ON ARMENIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Armenialiberty.org
Oct 31 2011

Gagik Tsarukian, the leader of Armenia’s second most important
governing party, on Monday again refrained from explicitly reaffirming
support former President Serzh Sarkisian’s reelection.

In an interview with the News.am online journal, Tsarukian rejected as
untrue media speculation about mounting tensions between his Prosperous
Armenia Party (BHK) and Sarkisian’s Republican Party of Armenia (HHK).

The tycoon himself fuelled that speculation about a month ago when
he pointedly declined to state, in another interview, whom the BHK
will support in the next presidential election due in early 2013. He
spoke just days after former President Robert Kocharian, his longtime
political patron, indicated his desire to return to active politics.

Tsarukian committed himself to campaigning for Sarkisian’s reelection
in a February declaration signed with the president and Artur
Baghdasarian of Orinats Yerkir, the third party represented in
Armenia’s government.

Media reports this month have claimed that the BHK leader has come
under strong pressure from the presidential administration and the HHK
to restate that commitment or risk ouster from the ruling coalition.

Tsarukian blasted those reports, accusing “certain media outlets”
of spreading lies. “I think that our politicians, media and society
in general have long been able to tell real processes from made-up
campaigns,” he said.

Tsarukian cited the February declaration, saying that the BHK and the
HHK remain bound by “joint goals.” “We announced our joint goals …

with the memorandum signed in February, stating that with our active
steps we will enhance the ruling coalition’s role in our country and,
as a result of the [2012] parliamentary elections, we will earn our
parties greater representation in the National Assembly,” he said.

Yet significantly, Tsarukian again made no mention of the declaration’s
references to the 2013 presidential ballot.

Talk of the government pressure on the BHK intensified last week after
Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian said that political forces failing
to cooperate with the presidential HHK would “end up empty-handed.”

Although he did not name those forces, the remarks were construed by
many local commentators as a stern warning to Tsarukian.

The prime minister insisted over the weekend, however, that he did
not refer to the BHK.
