BAKU: Turkish Opposition Against Business Relations With Armenia

TURKISH OPPOSITION AGAINST BUSINESS RELATIONS WITH ARMENIA

Faruk Logoglu: “Such steps must be made after the withdrawal of
Armenian troops from the occupied territories and solution of
the Nagorno Karabakh conflict within the territorial integrity of
Azerbaijan”

Ankara. Mayis Alizadeh – APA. Turkish opposition leaders made comments
on some forces’ plans to establish business relations between Turkey
and Armenia. Member of the parliament from the Nationalist Movement
Party (MHP), Professor Ozcan Yenicari told APA that these projects
aimed to damage the Turkish-Azerbaijani brotherhood. “Such projects
have always existed. Turkey faced with capitulating Sevres treaty.

Then they tried to give all Cyprus to Greeks. Now some non-governmental
organizations supported by the West are continuing old games using
the unstable foreign policy of the government. Those, who signed a
memorandum for the development of trade relations between Turkey and
Armenia, have no relation to Turkey. They are financed by the foreign
Armenian organizations. Their main goal is to create discords between
Azerbaijan and Turkey. Look back to the state of relations between
the two fraternal countries after the signing of Zurich protocols in
October, 2009. Unfortunately Turkish flags were lowered in Azerbaijan
and Azerbaijani flags were lowered in Turkey.

Armenians aim to make Azerbaijan dissatisfied with Turkey and to
create confrontation between the two fraternal countries and to make
them to forget the occupation of Karabakh”.

Yenicari considers that Azerbaijan should establish strong lobby
in Turkey against so-called non-governmental organizations,
which try to create confrontation. “We have to establish joint
non-governmental organizations in the fields of politics, culture and
economy. Armenia supported by the OSCE Minsk Group members tries to
prolong the occupation of Karabakh as far as it can. I always said
that the way of liberation of Karabakh from the occupation passes
through Ankara. We have to establish strong Azerbaijani lobby in
Turkey to struggle against these non-governmental organizations,
which are supported by the foreign Armenian organizations and don’t
think about the interests of Turkey”.

Deputy chairman of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), MP from
Adana, former Turkish ambassador to Azerbaijan Faruk Logoglu said any
steps and initiatives should meet requirements of the relations with
Azerbaijan and this is main condition for the establishment of any
relation between Turkey and Armenia. “Why Turkish-Armenian relations
are in this state? This is because of Nagorno Karabakh problem. While
this problem is not being solved, any step between Turkey and Armenia
will damage the Turkish-Azerbaijani relations. The non-governmental
organizations are attempting to do something independently, but
sometimes it is impossible to control their activity. Such contacts
should have common framework that is the withdrawal of Armenian troops
from the occupied territories and solution of the Nagorno Karabakh
problem within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. Only after
that the process can be easy”.

Armenian Growth Decelerates Sharply In October

ARMENIAN GROWTH DECELERATES SHARPLY IN OCTOBER
Venla Sipila

Global Insight
December 1, 2011

According to the latest indicator of economic activity published by
the Armenian National Statistical Service, as reported by ARKA News,
the economy expanded by 2.6% year-on-year (y/y) in October. This
marked a considerabe deceleration from the September rate of 9.0% y/y.

Moreover, activity compared to September contracted by 17.9%. The
latest developments resulted in growth of 5.9% y/y in the
January-October period. More detailed data testify to a contraction of
25% y/y in construction activity in October, while industrial output
increased by 14.3% y/y. Agricultural output increased by 7.7% y/y,
while its seasonal fall of some 36% from September seems to explain
a large part of the overall m/m contraction of the economy.

In addition, it was reported that both exports and imports in October
increased by around 21% y/y, while exports plunged by 21% from
September, as imports rose by 2.3% m/m. The resulting trade deficit
for October measured some USD278 million. These results compared
to respective export and import growth rates of 33.5% y/y and 12%
y/y in January-September, while the trade gap for the first three
quarters of the year came in at some USD2.0 billion.

Significance:Deceleration in Armenian growth well fits IHS Global
Insight’s expectations. The reasonably resilient growth to date this
year should still secure annual GDP growth close to the government’s
official forecast of 4.6%. The Armenian economy, including its export
sector, has benefited from high global commodity prices this year
which have supported the mining industry. In addition, the recovery of
agricultural production following the dismal performance last year has
played a key role, also benefiting the external balances by suppressing
food product imports. The outlook for economic performance in the next
quarters is decidedly weakening, and risks regarding both GDP and
external balances are high and rising. This is because the outlook
for global and European economic performance is severely clouded at
present, not least due to the deep Eurozone sovereign debt crisis. The
impact from deterioration in the external economic environment would
be felt in lower inflows of very important remittances.

Bayrakdarian’s Brahms Bound To Be Brilliant

BAYRAKDARIAN’S BRAHMS BOUND TO BE BRILLIANT

auditorium) Tickets: Various prices at van-couversymphony.ca or

The last time soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian performed Brahms’
career-changing “Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem)” was back
in the days where words like “captivating,” “charming” and “new”
were used to describe her already astonishing, but as yet not fully
under-stood, talents. When the singer meets the work this weekend
with the VSO under Maestro Bramwell Tovey and guests baritone Hugh
Russell and the Vancouver Bach Choir, it will be as the “incomparable,”
“defining” and “glob-al” star she has become.

“I was a light, lyric and inexperienced [singer] last time I performed
it, over 13 years ago,” says Bayrakdar-ian. “So it was as a notch in my
belt more than coming into the challenge of this piece’s vocal parts,
which soar and joyfully exalt the spirit even in sadness.

“Where requiems are usually some-thing more of a downer, this work
is full of hope at the end of the struggle and rejoining those who
are deceased at the end of your life and, ultimately, it is hopeful.”

First performed in Leipzig in 1869, Brahms began work on the requiem
some 10 years earlier working through ideas for both a first symphony
and parts did indeed become the first Piano Concerto.

However, with the death of his creative mentor Robert Schumann and
then his mother in 1865, he went fully into crafting a requiem in
German using Martin Luther’s German Bible as opposed to the far more
common classical Catholic Mass used in most requiems. This instantly
meant that the piece was imbued with the humanist views gaining favour
at the time.

Brahms was 35 at the time of the piece’s premiere and, after a
less-than-favourable first run-through, it truly established him as
a heavy-weight.

Some music historians have noted the various ways voices are used as
key to the work’s enduring appeal. Bayrakdarian disagrees with the
sometimes stated “non-aria” qualities of the piece. She says that
it is more how the words of the scripture are like a proclamation
echoed by the chorus as a voice of angels than a more traditional
call-and-response prayer. Somewhat different, but not completely
different.

“The chorus comes in to give credibility, sonority and validity to
arias in a non-secular piece of say, a Rossini opera. And there are
moments with the baritone where the chorus does, in fact, almost become
as equals in the work. But I would call my two main pieces arias.”

She’s the singer, so the wise ears defer to her interpretation. After
all, this is an artist who has worked and recorded everything from
the best-known Mozart operas to the classical folksong adaptations of
Armenian composer Vartabed Gomidas working with her husband, pianist
Serouj Kradjian. Bayrakdarian is certainly not afraid of the modern
or put-ting her voice into different settings. Her recent concert
series with cellist Stephan Isserlis at Wigmore Hall in London is a
prime example.

“I cannot compare that venue to anywhere else in the world, it
magnifies the warmth in the voice to the point you are asking if it
is really you. It was a great experience with Stephen, too because
he chose such incredible new works for cello and voice, particularly
Russian composers, that just worked so well.”

There may be a recording of the recital, but after the Brahms this
weekend comes a production of Zem-linsky’s Der Zwerg at the Gran
Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona.

“Barcelona in the winter sounded like a pretty good plan don’t
you think?”

Discussion Of Armenian Genocide Recognition In Israel’s Knesset Post

DISCUSSION OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RECOGNITION IN ISRAEL’S KNESSET POSTPONED AND WILL BE HELD AFTER DECEMBER 20

Yerevan/Mediamax/. The Education Committee of the Israeli Knesset
postponed the discussion of the issue on the recognition of the
Armenian Genocide and will discuss it after December 20.

The head of the Armenian National Committee of Jerusalem, Georgette
Avagyan, said this in the interview to Mediamax. She noted that the
discussion was postponed because the speaker of the Knesset was out of
the country. The issue was earlier expected to be discussed this week.

This August, Deputy Foreign Minister of Israel Danny Ayalon said in
the exclusive interview to Mediamax:

” It is no secret that the mass murder of the Armenian people during
the First World War is a most sensitive matter and as a people that
also suffered from persecution and murder we are especially sensitive
to that. However, since the subject, most regrettably, has become
political, it needs to be handled with great care. Israel has never
denied the Armenian tragedy, but we do not wish to become party to
the confrontation between Turkey and Armenian on this important issue.”

Yerevan Jur To Seek Fresh Loans To Upgrade Obsolete Water Distributi

YEREVAN JUR TO SEEK FRESH LOANS TO UPGRADE OBSOLETE WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

/ARKA/
December 2, 2011
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, December 2. /ARKA/. The French-run Yerevan Jur company
managing Armenian capital city’s water distribution network will seek
fresh loans to modernize the system, René Paul, chairman of Yerevan
Jur board said today. Mr. Paul also oversees Veolia~Rs projects in
Turkey, Russia and some other former Soviet republics.

Veolia has received large-scale loans from the World Bank ($18 million)
and the French government (25 million euros) to upgrade the Armenian
capital~Rs obsolete water and sewerage networks. Most of its drinking
water still leaks out of eroding Soviet-era pipes before reaching
consumers.

~QOur ultimate and ambitious goal is to ensure 24 hour water
supplies,~R Paul said but declined to specify how much it will seek
to attract this time.

According to him, the duration of water supply depends largely on
seasons making 21 hours a day at some periods and worsening in summer.

He said this is partly due also to various tricks used by some
consumers to tap illegally on pipes To resolve this problem, the
company is closely cooperating with local authorities. Rene Paul
said also the priority task at this moment is rehabilitating water
purification stations.

Yerevan Jur (Yerevan Water) is run by French Veolia Generale des Eaux
that won an international tender announced by World Bank to take up
a long-term management of the Yerevan network in 2006. It pledged
to upgrade the obsolete network and ensure 24-hour water supplies to
households The company manages also drinking and waste water removal
systems in Ararat, Aragatsotn and Kotayk provinces. Yerevan Jur has
339,370 customers. The company produces 370 million cubic meters of
drinking water a year and manages 2,120 km of water pipelines.
