PanARMENIAN.Net – A Boston-based dance company that tells the story
of Armenia’s past will stop in Glendale on Jan 15 as part of its
national tour.

The Sayat Nova dance company will perform, “Journey Through Time,”
which is a new production for the company, which is entering its
25th year.

With over 20 dancers, the performance begins by paying homage to St.

Krikor Lousavorich and Armenia’s conversion to Christianity. Followed
by a meditation on the Battle of Avarayr, the dance also tells the
story of the 1915 Armenian Genocide and how it particularly affected
Armenian composer Komitas, who died several years after the genocide
in a psychiatric clinic. It is said he never recovered from what he
witnessed during the genocide, Glendale News-Press reported.

Imprisoned Dink Murder Suspect Says His Life Is In Danger

IMPRISONED DINK MURDER SUSPECT SAYS HIS LIFE IS IN DANGER

epress.am

During the 24th hearing of the Hrant Dink case, suspect Yasin Hayal
claimed he was being threatened by prison guards and requested they
be interrogated, the Hurriyet Daily News reports.

“I have been used by the Turkish Republic, and now they want to
eliminate me. My life is in danger and the state will be responsible
if anything happens to me,” suspect Hayal said in court.

Hayal further alleged that many figures ranging from Erhan Tuncel to
Ramazan Akyurek had taken advantage of him and exploited his poverty.

“Tuncel persuaded me that our lives would be much better,” he said.

“I never knew Tuncel was a state agent. I respected him because he
was the head of Alperen Ocakları [an extreme right-wing group]. I met
him in 2002 and he introduced me to a lot of figures, including police
officers. I do not recall any names, however. I was involved directly
with Tuncel, and you ought to ask him about the names,” Hayal said.

Hayal also indicated they had a meeting in the Black Sea province of
Trabzon with some people who had arrived from Istanbul, and it was
here that Ogun Samast was selected as the triggerman.

Meanwhile, the phone records provided to the court by Turkey’s
Telecommunications Directorate (TİB) included the numbers of certain
individuals who have been in contact with case suspects, said one
of the defendant’s lawyers in the case of murdered Turkish-Armenian
journalist Hrant Dink.

“It is not true that there was no one connected to the suspects
being tried in your court in the records sent by the TİB, containing
some 6,235 interviews and 9,300 numbers. The existence of a direct
connection between case suspects and certain phone numbers in the
records has been established,” said Fethiye Cetin, one of the Dink
family’s lawyers, during the trial yesterday.

Five persons bearing a connection to the suspects and who were present
at the crime scene have been identified through examining the records,
Cetin said, adding that the connection between case suspects and
another 14 persons who were missing from the crime scene but were
called from there had also been determined.

Tuncel’s lawyer, Erdogan Soruklu, also agreed with the Dink lawyers
and said some of the phone records were deleted.

The prosecutor’s office has accepted the lawyers’ demand to examine
the phone records of individuals allegedly connected to the case
suspects in detail and subsequently ruled to request the relevant
information from the TİB. Still, prosecutor Hikmet Usta denied the
lawyers’ claims and said they previously directed all the records to
counterterrorism police and all records were analyzed.

Usta further claimed Dink was not killed due to his Armenian identity;
the prosecutor said his murder was part of a political murder tradition
related to a terror organization within the state.

YEREVAN.- Iran’s threats and warnings can be considered as a response
to the sanctions, expert in Oriental studies Mher Baghdasaryan told
journalists on Thursday.

He recalled that the world community has no proofs that Iran possesses
nuclear weapons. Baghdasaryan stressed that military confrontation
will lead to catastrophic consequences for the entire region which
is advantageous neither to U.S., nor Europe, Russia or China.

“We cannot rule out such developments as the region is really
unpredictable. However, I think that there are not many chances that
a military conflict will break out,” he said.

Pentagon Chief Leon Panetta recently named the limiting line, after
which Washington would be prepared to use force against Tehran.

Panetta said U.S. would not allow closing of the Strait of Hormuz
by Iran.

Turquie : Un Procureur Reclame La Prison A Vie Pour Des Putschistes

TURQUIE : UN PROCUREUR RECLAME LA PRISON A VIE POUR DES PUTSCHISTES DE 1980
Stephane

jeudi 12 janvier 2012

passe chasse trois gouvernements.

Genocide Armenien: Paris S’Expose A De Nouvelles Sanctions, Selon An

GENOCIDE ARMENIEN: PARIS S’EXPOSE A DE NOUVELLES SANCTIONS, SELON ANKARA

L’Express

11 janv 2012

Good; Not Good Enough: Pension Increase Lags Behind Cost Of Living S

GOOD; NOT GOOD ENOUGH: PENSION INCREASE LAGS BEHIND COST OF LIVING SURGE

Pensioners are not as enthusiastic about benefit increases as the
Government, which raised aid allotments beginning this year.

Across the board, pensions will be raised by 10 percent. (The minimum
pension, for example, will grow from about $27 to about $34.)

There are approximately 522,000 pensioners in Armenia (about 16
percent of the population), and many of them view the 10 percent
raise in contrast to the 14 percent hike in food staples.

While authorities believe that raising pensions means assistance to
a solid share of the population, pensioners and experts point to the
4.7 percent inflation and the perpetually increasing cost of living
to conclude that the raise will not bring any positive change in the
living standard of the socially vulnerable strata of society.

“Over the past years, price hikes in Armenia have been so rampant that
these raises [pensions, salaries] are absolutely not proportionate to
that inflation and will not bring relief to pensioner’s poor living
conditions. This is just a campaign step prior to the fortcoming
elections in order to attract the attention of that social class,”
member of Heritage parliamentary faction Armen Martirosyan told
ArmeniaNow.

According to data posted by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, in the
neighboring Georgia minimum service pension is 110 lari (some $66;
25,500 AMD), in Azerbaijan it’s 85 manat (around $108; 41,800 AMD). In
Armenia the average pension is 25,000 drams (around $64.50), when,
by official data, the minimum consumer basket per month in 2011 was
62,600 drams (around $170).

“The added amount won’t even buy a kilo of beef, given that it costs
3,000 drams ($8). If they were going to give a raise they’d better
have given a proper raise to people with low pensions first, so that
it could make a difference. The way they have done isn’t of help to
us,” says pensioner Roza Balayan, 77.

Many pensioners are living alone without families and their only
source of income is their pension; they economize it trying to make
it last, along with attempts to spend less. Almost all pensioners
need medications and medical adssistance, but have neither medical
insurance nor state assistance.

“I worked for 55 years but only 35 is counted and after this recent
raise my pension has become 31,300 (around $81). But I live alone and
can hardly make both ends meet. I am trying to spend with extreme
caution, counting every penny. I am not even heating my place, but
it still does not suffice,” says 75-year-old Arusyak Soghomonyan,
adding that her utility expenses are 7,000-9,000 drams ($18-23) for
her one-bedroom apartment, plus additional payments for property tax,
garbage disposal, medicines and food.

Economist Andranik Tevanayna told ArmeniaNow that the rate of the price
hike is much higher than the raise in pensions, which, he believes,
“nullifies the government efforts”.

“In order to be able to raise pensions, the government raises taxes,
whereas our economy has to be developed and one of the most important
steps in trying to develop it is to relieve the tax burden, and not
add pressure. Our government is collecting taxes, which leads to
inflation,” says Tevanyan.
