V. VOSKANYAN: PAKISTANI RESOLUTION OF KHOJALY EVENTS NOT SERIOUS

Pakistan’s Senate Foreign Affairs Committee passed a resolution on
February 1 recognizing Khojaly events in 1992 as genocide.

Pakistan is an artificially created state having serious ethnic
problems, and its Senate Foreign Affairs Committee resolution on
Khojaly is at least not serious.

At least two nations inhabiting in Pakistan accuse of the local
government for exercising policy of genocide against them. They are
Pakistani Balujs and Pashtuns.

A month ago Victoria Nuland, US state department spokeswoman, was
asked in Twitter to remark on genocide carried out against Baluj
people in Pakistan, although Mrs. Nuland didn’t use the word genocide,
she expressed the deepest concerns over the issue. Hence, that was
the first time the US has referred to the genocide of Baluj people
in Pakistan.

Thus, instead of focusing on Khojaly, which is terra incognita for
an average Pakistani, the authorities are highly recommended to stop
massacre against Baluj people, expert said.

Besides, Pakistan is a state having the most corrupted state system.

Indexes released by “Transparency International” are evidences, thus
the resolution might have been influenced by Azerbaijani oil dollars.

Baluj people live in south-eastern province of Balujistan, Pakistan.

Armenian Deli Remains All About Family

ARMENIAN DELI REMAINS ALL ABOUT FAMILY

Alla’s Armenian Restaurant & Deli is run by just two people: Alla
Sargsyan and her son, Arthur.

Fans of the former Bedrosian’s Armenian Deli in the same location,
3051 E. Ashlan Ave., will recognize Alla. She worked as a cook under
owner Johnnie Bedrosian for 14 years.

Sargsyan and Bedrosian parted ways a little over a year ago and
Bedrosian’s closed shortly after. But in late November, Alla and her
son decided to open their own restaurant in the same space.

Now they spend 12 to 14 hours a day, six days a week, making hummus
and yalanchi — grape leaves stuffed with rice, onion and tomatoes —
from scratch.

Alla cooks while Arthur waits tables. During busy lunch hours, he
runs back and forth from the dining room, down a long hallway he calls
his highway, to a Weber grill out the back of the restaurant. There,
he tends to the chicken, beef, lamb and pork kebabs they added to
the menu.

They know they need to hire another person, but right now they don’t
have the money.

The little restaurant at the northwest corner of First Street and
Ashlan Avenue is still getting a makeover. There’s a new paint job,
ceiling and floor, but the alcoves that line the dining room are empty,
waiting for business to pick up before money is spent on filling them
with sculptures.

Alla is cooking much of the same menu as the old place. She built up
quite a following when the restaurant was Bedrosian’s.

“I like them. They like me, like a family,” Alla says.

And family is important to the Sargsyans, in part because they don’t
have very much of it.

Alla and a 9-year-old Arthur, an only child, moved from Armenia to
Fresno in 1995 to be closer to Alla’s husband’s family. The couple
divorced, but Alla stayed, despite not having a single blood relative
in the country.

So those relationships they have with customers are all the more
important, they say. When people get to know them and greet them with
a hug like they’re family, it makes the hard work worth it, Arthur says

“When we go home after 12 hours, we’re not as tired,” he says.

Can we talk about desserts for a minute?

Every time I write about special holiday meals at restaurants, I end
up salivating over the desserts.

Like the blackberry, peach and pistachio crumble topped with a
pistachio butter topping that Elaine’s Table at Tres Bien in Visalia
had for Valentine’s Day. How can you not want to indulge in something
sweet after reading that description?

So I want to find out where you get your favorite dessert. Drop me a
line at [email protected] telling me where you go and what sweet
something you order. Describe it for me and maybe I’ll include it in
a future column.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit opened Feb. 10 at 73 N. Main St. in Porterville.

It’s the first Dickey’s for the central San Joaquin Valley and
franchisee Ed Phillips tells me that the ribs are selling so well
they can’t cook them fast enough.

Gelbakhiani Surrenders At Armenian Border

GELBAKHIANI SURRENDERS AT ARMENIAN BORDER

On Monday, wanted Georgian opposition figure Valeri Gelbakhiani
surrendered to law enforcement at the Georgia-Armenia border, after a
four-year search. Gelbakhiani, who was tried for treason in absentia,
has been wanted by police since February 4, 2008.

Gelbakhiani was charged with plotting to overthrow the constitutional
order. He previously served as the chief of staff for the late Georgian
presidential candidate Badri Patarkatsishvili.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Gelbakhiani and former
judge Marina Gabunia conspired to violently overthrow the government
through protests and riots across Georgia. Their plot also included
bribing government officials to gain access to, and detain, the
Minister of Internal Affairs.

The plan was allegedly agreed upon with the consent of
Patarkatsishvili.

Gelbakhiani’s decision to return to Georgia and turn himself in
was influenced by his mother’s poor health. According to his son,
Irakli, who was with his father at the border, Gelbakhiani is currently
being held in Gldani prison #8. “He hopes that political parties, the
diplomatic corps, and society reacts to his detention and assists him.

He also hopes that sees his mother either alive or dead,” the younger
man remarked, noting that his grandmother is resting in a Sachkhere
hospital.

Government representatives commented that this issue is the domain
of law enforcement. “I can only say that all issues related to
Gelbakhiani’s detention… are the competence of the prosecutor’s
office and the court, thus making any comment by me would be
[inappropriate],” majority member of Parliament, Pavle Kublashvili,
said.

Leader of the Christian Democratic Movement, MP Giorgi Targamadze,
demanded the immediate release of Gelbakhiani, saying that his party is
ready to post bail. He called the arrest “a political pursuit carried
out by the current regime and not a legal action”. Targamadze also
noted that any Georgian would return home, regardless of criminal
charges, if their mother’s health was at stake.

MP Jondi Baghaturia also believes that Gelbakhiani and Patarkatsishvili
are innocent, but criticized the Christian-Democrats for failing to
support his earlier calls for investigation.

Opposition movement The Whites have also come out in support of
Gelbakhiani, saying that the government’s allegations are groundless
and that the authorities regularly threaten their opponents with
similar actions.

Movement Georgian Dream, also expressed interest regarding the issue
and mentioned that its lawyers would observe the process.

RUSSIAN BORDER GUARDS IN ARMENIA TAKE PART IN ADVANCE VOTING FOR PRESIDENT

Russia

Advance voting for the next President of Russia has begun at remote
outposts of the Russian border-guard troops located under the terms of
Armenian-Russian interstate agreements on the border between Armenia
and Turkey.

The enable the Russian citizens doing tours of military duty at
the border posts to use their constitutional right and elect a new
President of their homeland, the secretary and a member of the district
electoral commission had to use army cars and, on top of that, the
Bars /Snow Leopard/ snowmobiles.

The latter vehicles are especially needed to reach the outposts in
the Ibish section of the Gyumri Border Troops Detachment’s zone of
responsibility where the snow banks lying on the ground are as tall
as an average man. The section is located at the junction of state
borders of Armenia, Georgia and Turkey.

Officials from the Russian electoral commission will visit all the
outposts where Russian border guards and their families are stationed,
even though the total number of people having the right to participate
in advance voting there is not very big – slightly more than fifty.

Early voting is held in line with Russia’s federal law that specifies
the terms of voting in remote areas with a complicated terrain and
weather conditions.

Armenia took over the system of guarding its borders with Turkey
/total length 330 km/ and Iran /45 km/ from the former Soviet Union.

Armenian government believes that the deployment of Russian border
guards and the presence of a Russian military base on its terrritory
constitutes an important element of national security.

Russian border guards are stationed in the country under the provisions
of a September 30, 1992, interstate agreement on the status of Russia’s
border forces the Republic of Armenia.

The department of Russian border troops in Armenia has four detachments
– in Gyumri, Armavir, Artashat, and Megri, as well as a separate
checkpoint at Yerevan’s international Zvartnots airport.

The costs of the deployment in Armenia of about 4,500 Russian borders
force men and officers are shared by the two countries’ governments
in approximately even amounts.

The tasks set forth to the Russian border troops in Armenia “at the
section entrusted to them are fulfilled a hundred percent,” says
Lieutenant-General Viktor Vlassov, the commander of the border forces
on this country’s territory.

Yerevan, 20 February: Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan received
the delegation of US congressmen on 19 February who paid a visit to
Armenian on their way to Afghanistan.

During the dinner in honour of the congressmen, Serzh Sargsyan said:
“I would like to express gratitude for the financial, humanitarian and
technical assistance to Armenia. This year marks the 20th anniversary
of establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and the USA,
and I am glad that we celebrate that anniversary on a perfect level
of development of our bilateral relations.”

Armenian National Assembly chairman Samvel Nikoyan also received the
delegation headed by Congressman David Dreier. During the meeting,
it was stressed that the USA is fully involved in the resolution of
vital problems related to Armenia’s foreign policy, particularly to
Karabakh peace talks.

“As an MP I would like the USA to take the same stance on Karabakh as
on Kosovo. But we are content with the USA’s current position so far,”
said Samvel Nikoyan.

The head of parliament also welcomed the US assistance to the process
of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations. He noted that despite
the fact that Turkey again speaks the language of preconditions,
nevertheless the issue of ratification of the protocols [on the
normalization of relations] is still on the agenda of Armenian
parliament.

“This way we show our respect to the international community,” Samvel
Nikoyan stressed. He expressed the hope that “Turkey will realize
one day that the peaceful existence with the neighbours is better
than a tough stance”.

TURCOLOGIS: ARMENIA IS READY TO ESTABLISH RELATIONS WITH TURKEY, BUT TURKEY IS NOT

Armenia is ready establish relations with Turkey, but the same cannot
be said about Turkey, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies
of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, turcologist Rouben
Safrastyan said at today’s debates on the Armenian-Turkish relations
and the perspectives for the next 5 years. The representatives of
the Association of Young Politicians attended the debates.

“Our diplomacy has demonstrated that Armenia is ready to establish
relations with Turkey, but Turkey is not. Ankara is trying to
use these factors, which actually have nothing to do with the
Armenian-Turkish interstate relations”, Safrastyan said. As a result
of the Armenian-Turkish process, Armenia has managed to raise its
diplomatic image as a country, which was loyal to the bilateral
protocols, unlike Turkey.

“As regards the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide
and the Armenian Cause in general, we can state that the process with
Turkey has not done any harm to the Armenian people”, he said.

Safrastyan pointed out with content that the contemporary youth
representatives take an active part in debates on this topic.
